Let’s Build A 5.11 Tactical Man Purse

  • Not sure how this happened, but my new EDC bag is basically a man purse, but tactical 😜
    The 5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery bag is compact, low profile and fits perfect for everyday carry. I just have one BIG problem.
    I need to add a layer of 24hr survival gear, but it's not looking easy. Still missing big-ticket items like a survival shelter and a quality stainless steel canteen. Adding more gear will be tough since the bag is only 12L is total capacity. BUT I think it can be done!

    After having watched a number of “what’s in my bag” videos from women who show what they carry around on a regular basis, I think it would be smart for men to start carrying “purses” once again.
    There was a time, back a ways historically, where men always carried purses. I’m not really sure why that stopped. I mean, I realize men’s garments began increasing the number of pockets, but bulgy pockets all over a guy really looks awkward and kinda tacky.
    But today, I begin seeing men carrying a number of bags other than the standard backpack (a leftover from school days!) or the briefcase bag, and actually starting to care a little about style and function. That’s so refreshing!
    Of course, I come from a European family, where men are more likely to carry bags, and my father has carried a “man purse” for as long as I can remember, not caring in the least what anyone thought, and I have actually never heard any negative comments, although there are the occasional envious ones!
    I think it’s really smart to carry what you need with you, depending on the distance.
    I personally have a few purses available, in various sizes. I will take the bag that best suits the distance I’m going. If it’s less than 5 miles, it’s going to be a small bag, with a small water bottle. But greater distances require additional items to be prepared for whatever may happen, so the bag size increases.
    We all generally have an EDC, and can add on from that.
    I’m really glad to see guys like you being unafraid to go beyond the backpack and really looking into what’s available, and making use of it.
    Also, that bag is AWESOME!!!!!! Um.....does it come in blush pink?

      Couldn't agree more. Don't be the guy with the cargo pants bulging to capacity. The man "purse" probably became a fashion faux pas at some time. Now that I have this, it makes a lot more sense than toting a backpack around.
      Sounds like you got it locked in regarding your bag selection based on activity. Good to go.
      Thanks for the comment!

    for a container, a 27 oz klean kanteen bottle would serve very wel, and give you the ability to boil. I would also throw in a Hydroblu personal water filter. it is 3 stage, and does filter chemical as well as bio, for shelter, I would put in 2 large black garbage bags, and a 5X7 silnylon tarp . they are thin, light weight . and pack down very small. I would also add a paracord doughnut. for urban environments, you can use the 325 lb smaller stuff, and using a pop can as the center starter, you can still get 100+ feet in a very small doughnut. you can pass the back end of your shoulder strap through it and just carry it on the outside, you already have a lighter to singe the ends. and with the doughnut, you never have to worry about tangles, and it is very quick to deploy. also a small item you might add is a silcock key. they are cheap ( about $5.00) and can access water from commercial buildings in an emergency. this is a link to the filter I keep in my urban bag. I have a better one for the woods, but city water is usually not THAT bad. www.amazon.com/HydroBlu-Sidekick-Backpacking-Emergency-Preparedness/dp/B06ZZ839JY/ref=sr_1_50?crid=2DHGN3W7K3U2C&keywords=personal+water+filter+under+%2420&qid=1566558467&s=gateway&sprefix=personal+wa&sr=8-50 also, if you have never made a cordage doughnut, I have a video on my channel to teach you how.

    I use the largest 5.11 messenger bag for a computer bag. I also put the computer in a Vertx computer sleeve for extra protection. I carry a lot of gear with it. When traveling I use it as a carry on bag. You can load up a lot of crap in the XL bag including a change of clothes as long as its light travel type. For shelter carry a few of the body bag sized thick trash bags. They can serve as a bivvy, poncho, or tarp. And if you’re going to carry spare mags for that Glock 19, carry the 33 rounders.

    I would lose the Red Cross patch, you know where the aid kit is but if you are in an Urban environment trying to get home the Red Cross could scream medications to some people. Just me trying to draw as little attention to my kit. Good video, well thought out kit.

I’m a CDL Licensed driver for a towing & recovery company and as such often we a required to drive many different trucks from day to day. You can use velcro cable wraps to mount your tourniquet. They're used to organize TV cables and I got mine at Walmart. They come in black and grey. I got a 24oz single wall stainless bottle at Walmart online, it's thermos brand. Someone else had already mentioned the large survival tarp. Mine is SOL, orange on one side silver in the other. Got it at Academy. I'd also add an emergency crank radio, gloves, n95 mask and eye protection.

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good call on the velcro ties. SOL is great quality, big fan of their prepackaged fire kits. Probably no room for the crank radio, but def could fit gloves, n95 and eye pro

      @@TheSurvivalOutpost I got a Midland crank radio from Academy that's got weather ban, emergency ban and regular am/FM. It's less than 2 inches thick by 3 inches tall by 5 inches long. I personally think the information it gives is worth it's size. I too live in the south near a military facility and nuclear power plant. Between hurricanes, tornadoes and general SHTF I need the Intel it will give me.

    First of all great channel and info!👍 What I put in my kits are smart water bottles and a mini sawyer. Works great together and in a 24hr kit is more than enough. Also I always carry SA fleece face shields which could work for filtering water and many other uses. As for shelter I always put heavy mil trash bags and duct tape in all my kits. One of the reasons is for shelter and staying warm. During the winter maybe throw in a tact bivy or extra emergency blanket.

    In any survival situation the best tools you can have are your will and wits, John Lofty Wiseman wrote some books.
    Lightweight shelter, construction/industrial plastic bags, Mylar blanket, ducktape, cordage/paracord. DIY emergency tarp, fill bags with leaves and or paper and use it as a sleeping mat. ducktape has EDC purposes, plastic bags can be used as a bag, can turn into boots with some elastics, can quick patch things, the shelther is easy cheap, easy to make, easy to fix, easy to replace, most things can be found in a DIY store if not you are in the wrong store. Most likely you won't be able to buy anything better than this.
    Small mag, should be light and versatile. Plastic cable ties, are useful as well.
    Racktool + bitset for leatherman are a great utility expansion and performance in EDC and craft.
    Sawyer squeeze water filter, filters more water than you can drink in a decade, and fits on a plastic bottle which is a resource in abundance
    Pure petroleum vasaline, ducktape will enable you to fix things that shouldn't be moving, vasaline will enable you to fix things that should be moving, can be used to clean and protect small wounds, start fire, etc, (just don't use it on your lips, as it is not good for that) This will add a lot of versatility for a small package.
    I'd add a rain poncho, an extra pair of merino wool socks (can function as organizer and hand warmers), an underlayer shirt and pants of merino wool(it is expensive, it is fragile, but nothing out preforms it in helping your body to regulate it's temperature) to be worn underneath jeans till it starts to freeze and will still be comfortable, the most important thing of survival is having good walking shoes, 20km should be comfortable or you need different shoes, if the shoes don't hurt after 20km then they won't hurt when you need to rely on them. Keeping your feet dry and your body warm is always the main priority, both short and long term. Good shoes, good socks, a good under layer and rain protection will instantly make any uncomfortable situation more comfortable. Just good layering of clothing and good shoes will get you through a rough 24h.
    I would remove the second foldable knife and replace it with a simple mora.
    Paracord check this site upgrade accordingly, shoe laces are interesting as well from this company, www.titansurvival.com/pages/101-easy-paracord-project-ideas

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent well written comment. I agree 100% with the details on socks and staying dry. Nothing worse than being in a crappy situation AND being wet and even cold. Super suck factor x 100

    I have the exact same bag in the same color. I use a different bag for my office-- but for "EDC" outside the office I use this. I have a lot of the stuff you mentioned in your thorough review. As far as the conceal carry part, I have my Sig P239 and extra mag in a Maxpedition holster. Thanks for the presentation. I'm contemplating getting a soft armor plate since some companies make one for this exact bag-- but not sure if I'm willing to spend the $150 - $200 or if I really want that to take up valuable space-- I still have not decided on that part yet. Great video. subscribed.

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the channel and thanks for the comment! Regarding soft armor for the bag, I'd go with wearable armor first and then if you still want armor in the bag, go for it. That's my 2 cents :) I'm saying this based on the recent footage of the man who was shot dead in Portland. If he had a vest on he probably would have survived.

    My suggestion:
    For medical, add in a small CPR kit and several pairs of medical gloves.
    Instead of a laptop, how about an iPad Pro or similar device with a detachable keyboard? It saves on size both for the device and the charger/charging cables.
    I’m personally considering two single-stack pistols - one in my man purse and one on me with plenty of magazines both on me and in the bag. The two single stacks I have are the XDS 3.3 and 4.0 in 9mm. The magazines are interchangeable.
    Others have mentioned a space blanket and cash and/or credit and debit cards for emergency shelters. I agree.
    How about a large, metal coffee mug for you water and whatnot?
    I also like to travel with some raw nuts to help keep hunger away.
    Lastly, I have the older version of the 5.11 bag you have that I’ve used around town. Nice product.

      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would love to get an iPad Pro, just too $$$ for me atm. I've heard good things about the XDS, whats your experience been like? Looking at a Pelican SS water bottle in 24oz. Mixed nuts are nice, I usually have those handy with some beef jerky.

      @@TheSurvivalOutpost Mind you, I have the first generation XDS's. I found it easier to shoot the 4.0 more accurately than the 3.3. I eventually shot the 3.3 as accurately with lots of practice and getting used to the trigger. I prefer the first gens over the mod 2 versions because of the interchange back straps. The mod 2 doesn't quite fit my hands as well.

    Great vid, like your style of vids. Not a pretender or "expert" just working things out. Got a 17 oz stainless steel single wall canteen on amazon. Not the 24 oz you were looking for but holds water and you can boil in it. Add a few world pak water bags and your covered in water department. Add aquatab ' s just in case. As for shelter other have suggested sol emergency blankets can do two person for cover and one person for personal warmth. They take up little space. Or get a shower liner and put grommets in it. Or a drop cloth folded up. Heck I have a grabber blanket that I slide in with my laptop. Other suggestion would be to chance flashlight to a Wowtac A2 it is headlamp and flashlight or a olight that is a headlamp and flashlight. More veritable and leave your hands free to use the Glock or knife. Keep doing what your doing and thank you.

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I'm def not an expert, but always learning and increasing my skillsets. I have a world pak dry bag from a subscription box, I"ll check out their water bags. Lots of good suggestions for shelter, I dug around in the giant mounts of gear and found a small very compact poncho. Thinking I'll combine that with a 55 gallon trashbag and some type of emergency blanket.
      Headlamp is a good suggestion, I do have a small olight flashlight that can clip onto a hat brim. I might swap out to that.

    I try to pay close attention but I have several distractions today.. I'm going to make a few suggestions, please forgive me if you have these items covered and I missed it. Ibuprofen, lip balm, sunglasses, protein bars, coffee filters and a sawyer mini. I know you said 24 hours but I would kind of over prepare a little just in case it's longer. For your "cover" I suggest a shower curtain liner or a heavy duty trash bag or two. I'm pretty sure I saw cordage.. I like bank line myself. There are tons of other things but your bag will only hold so much. Thank you so much for this video! You are entertaining and informative. So yeah, keep the information flowing. 😎👍🏻 Oh, to carry your radio.. Is there a way you could carry it on your belt? You definitely need to carry it. Maybe take the antenna off and put that in the bag..

    I've found two good place to buy the Kershaw Shuffle is at Walmart or Smoky Mountain Knife Works. I have several and while I was afraid that the knife would be too small for my hands, with the finger choil cut into the blade it fits my hand perfectly. It's small, but feels as sturdy as most 4 inch folders.I recently presented my older brother with a brand new 5.11 PUSH pack and the book by Max Cooper on how to set it up, create a kit, etc., and he is really into it now. We both purchased a couple of their 6.10 pouches last night that were marked down from $30 to $20 each. They do a nice job on the stitching of the bags/pouches and the MOLLE webbing is perfect and tight.I considered buying a bag like the one you demonstrate, but felt that size is just too large for hitting the video game store or fast food places, etc., and may draw more attention than a PUSH pack, Rapdom T310, or the UTG bag. The flip side is that the messenger bags can actually hold a laptop or full size books and documents. Great video as always.

Titan extra thick bevy bag or SOL bivey bag packs small too. Bandanna as well as paper coffee filters will work for pre-filtering water. Lots of thin metal single wall water bottle options out there on Amazon. Not sure, Pathfinder might have one now. Maybe a metal cup for boiling? Nano candles are a good option for lighting and heat a micro environment. Rehydration powder in my area is always a must, no matter how much water you carry. i have this bag and love this bag but i had to make some real HD modifications to make it absolutely perfect -
    the two side pockets that expand are sloppy as shit so i sowed them shut so now they are simply two nice pockets that dont expand -
    the internal panels of the main internal pocket are just to much fabric and you cant load anything into it so i carefully and cosmetically removed them - creating one nice big pocket to carry compartmentalized organizers - it was a hard decision but it created the perfect messenger bag - any such modifications should only be done by qualified people - the bag is absolutely the perfect urban bag - the front admin pockets are very useful - and the velcro on the front flap is the best i have ever seen - i almost never have to lock it down because the velcro is so solid but its strong and loud so if you want to sneak and peak - you will make your presence known ( unless you cover the velcro with a velcro blank and just use the buckles - and the bag is super strong - its made of 1050 not 1000 ( which is military grade - 1050 is stronger than military - its a great bag - just dont overload it because it will carry any weight you put in - it will not break - but you will :-) it even has a luggage pass through so you can slip it over the suitcase handle

    for shelter, an SOL HD Heatsheet in od green w/shelter kit. i see you have a Camelbak, if you get the Eddy version you can mod it with a Sawyer Mini inside a camp mug. small nitpick, can you secure the front flap w/o the velcro? it's NOISY!!!-Scout

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is super noisy lol, I might just remove the velcro strip tbh. No other way to snap those buckles without the velcro coming into contact. I'll check out that SOL and good call on the Eddy version!

    Maybe carry a light weight hammock like an eno which balls up very small. Carry a Mylar bivy to wrap up in and lay in the eno. I added this option to my bag and it doesn’t take up much space either.

    • @Mountainman_co97
      @Mountainman_co97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only down side is you need to be in a place where you can tie off the hammock.

    Get a light colored umbrella. Now that you’re done laughing. I live in Arizona where it can reach up to 120. The sun will cook your ass and it’s portable shade.

      Tracking 100%. There are some areas in my general vicinity where there is no shade. Umbrella is not a bad idea. But hey about that Arizona heat, its not bad cause its a dry heat right :)

    I don't know if switching to single-stack mags is a good idea. After all, bags are supposed to help you carry the items you are most effective and efficient with. the bags should adapt to your system, not the other way around. If you're cool with double-stack mags, stick with them and get a larger bag. By the way, the bag shown in the video is the Mike, the smallest in the lineup. An Xray will give you some extra room.

    Kleen kanteen..22oz. I honestly think you have plenty of room for more trauma. You’ll use bandaids and gauze the most. Some otc medications like acetaminophen, anti inflammatory, Benadryl, gas x, etc are ez to add for EDC. Id build that kit LITERALLY around EDC. Stuff you’ll use everyday..

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great input TB. I have a Kleen Kanteen, but was disappointed at quality. Leaky. Agreed about building it around EDC. That's the idea as you can see from what I showed, its just the added gear for 24hrs that makes it a little challenging. For shelter, I dug through my storage bins again and found a small lightweight rugged emergency poncho....

      Great points. After I filmed this I stumbled on some ponchos left over from Emergency Zone. Turns out they are a perfect fit. Not ideal, but works for 24hrs. May not be a bad idea to toss in a trashbag to use as ground cover

      Question if I may .because of inspiration I just started a you channel but I have been sitting on two prototypes ( back pack and wallet ) I would like to give it a go and get them produced do you have any insight on this .

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warlantactical Get out and test the gear. Write a basic script high level bullet points of features you want to cover in the video.
      When you film, make eye contact w/ the camera, try to be loose and relaxed. Make sure you film from multiple angles. IE, you want to show off the cool organization features of the pack. Film half of it from a direct heads on shot, then the other half from a different angle.

    Sierra designs has an awesome poncho can be used as ground cloth or tarp . I would not use anything military or tacticle screams target person of interest to a civilian and police and would tell me he is probably armed plastic water bottle and filter good enough for city situation no need to boil pool water or toilet tank water and any water source should be good enough in the city for drinking with water filter get a 4 way water key forget Shemaghs for city screams terrorist or military use a sock to filter if you have too carry some paper coffee filters in that zip lock your talking a get home bag not a survival bag for wilderness dont over think it, stay light and mobile,add safety glasses, beanie,work gloves, moisture wicking tee (great water filter very lightweight drys fast and regulates heat and cold) your not going to be the only one on the street if shtf so blend in and hurry home get there fast and alive maybe get a city map too. Military and operatives think about being grey and mobile so should you.

      @@TheSurvivalOutpost here is the link for the sierra designs poncho www.moosejaw.com/product/sierra-designs-storm-poncho_10225292 I dont get paid to advertise for them but it serves me well I live in the mountains of new Mexico and have used this all year even in snow while on horse back . Good wind break and enough mobility and freedom to reach my side arm quickly . I also carry a large travel micro fiber quick dry beach towel packs small and works great even to keep warm like a shawl . Come in very handy while doing mountain rescue here for cold and wet stranded hikers . I have two ponchos in my saddle bags I have a Cold Steel recon tanto and it's a beast and great prybar if needed . Have used many times to break rusted door latches.

    I am confused what your objective is. You have a laptop along with get home stuff. Carrying all that any distance in a shoulder bag isn’t going to be very practical. Is it to carry anytime your away from your car or to leave in your car? If your carrying it away from the car, it looks too “tactical” which might make you stand out when you don’t want to.

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
      @TheSurvivalOutpost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is to add 24hr survival foundation to my EDC. I work in technology, therefore the laptop, charger, battery pack, cables, etc. Minus any patches it looks pretty much like any other messenger bag/laptop bag I see daily on the street. The difficulty is fitting Get Home in a bag that is already packed with work essential gear.

    • @bw162
      @bw162 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Survival Outpost That is a problem. I am trying to find a smaller man purse for CCW, mags, lite, knife, phone, first aid and leave most everything else in the get home bag in the car. Cargo pants just aren’t enough with wallet, keys, etc. But I don’t want to look like a dork either.

    • @TheSurvivalOutpost
