I can relate to that feeling of overthinking and terror. It went away over time as I only told the people that mattered to me and "hiding it" eventually became more of a "I didn't have to tell you" or a "need to know basis" kind of thing. In other words, at least for me, it eventually becomes passive and doesn't bother me as much if at all anymore.
When i told my 2 best friends i was a furry they thought that it was a joke too. Now whenever they see something furry related like a character in a game they say "this is literaly made for you". Safe to say that they accepted me being a furry and now im ready to turn them into furries too >:3
It's gosh darn crazy how much people disrespect furries, I have first been a furry in 2020 but recently I rejoined the fandom when you made your "why furries hide being a furry" video and I have been the happiest I ever was since months to the point I have advanced in my personnal projects at a pace I never thought I would, and I also have never told anywone outside the internet that I am furry because I'm scared of people's opinions and reactions to it.

I have been a furry for almost two years, yet I’m still ‘closeted’. I’m more bothered by how annoying it would be to have to explain it to my family. Sure, my family may accept it but, it seems like too much effort for a low energy individual, I too eepy. Anxiety really prevents you from doing things that could make you happy.

I just don't use the word "furry", since it has some unfortunate negative associations. "Yeah I really like fluffy animal characters in media" "Oh that half-finishes animal costume? I saw these online and thought they looked neat, I wanted to make one" Everything I say about the hobby are things that are perfectly socially acceptable, and I'm not hiding anything either - nor am I using a word that could make people think I'm something that I'm not. Because while yes I am a furry, some people will hear "furry" and think "he thinks he's an animal", whereas nobody's gonna hear "yeah I picked up costume-making as a hobby" and think "that guy uses a litter box". It's unfortunate that a good number of people are ignorant on what "furry" means, but most people won't have a problem with what being a furry actually entails - so I'm totally open with what I do for fun. I just don't label it.
Gotta say that mentioning that you’re a furry to a close friend is a very good way to route out who is truly a good friend and who you might be in a toxic relationship with. From my experience most of my friend group was chill with it (on the account they were already furries or soon to be), but one person who I thought to be a close friend (and now relies I had nothing in common with) heard that I was a furry when trying to back up another who was being made fun of by him, he then tried to spread a rumour about me at our school at the time but fell short on the account that unlike him I actually had good reputation with most people, and in a funny twist of events most people ended up trusting him less than me. Although compared to what I’ve heard from other people’s experiences I got off pretty lite, it still gives me anxiety if new close friends (or god forbid family) find out I’m a furry.

I'm not a furry, but it's inevitable. I'll most likely become a furry by the end of this year, but will probably have to hide it in most places. Only one person knows I've been watching these types of videos, becuase I feel like most of my friends won't accept me as a furry, or even for just watching a few (hundred) videos like this. If (more like when) I become a furry, I'll probably keep it all online and won't tell anyone I know in real life about it, accept that one friend. Wait a few years and nobody will probably care, though - the same two friends that I made fun of furries with in high school know I'm a furry and they don't mind at all. I hid my interest for years, and I think that was the right call, but you don't have to hide it forever. All my friends and family know I'm making a fursuit, and all I've heard about it has been along the lines of "that's really cool, I would never be able to make something like that" any time they're visiting and see the WIP in the corner, because most adults are much better about not judging people for their hobbies.

Somehow even after i sent it to him he didnt notice, so i wore a furry outfit, not once but twice in Roblox, and he somehow didnt notice. So then i posted it on my twitter and he didnt notice, then i sent a 20 second vid of me saying im a protogen, he didnt notice, until out of nowhere he started teasing me about it, and i didnt even notice he knew until like a day later. He wasn’t mean about it, it was like a joke, so that’s good
tbh I hide being a furry because I would feel like a fraud telling anyone. I don't have a fursona yet and the only resources I have to draw anything is a pencil and a sketchbook. I want to draw but at the same time it's new to me and it turns into something I only do when I genuinely crave drawing something which doesn't happen a lot.
