      @@TheBullsGarden I talked to my Pastor about doing a Church Garden and he said they tried it before but the city charges so much for water because they charge a "commercial fee". He said with watering the grass 3 days a week for 8 mins at a time his bills have been extremely high. I have enough property that I am going to try to get some trees removed for more sunlight and then I can have a Church Garden at my pace for those who would like to help. That way it will be on my watering bill and land but with help from the Church. I haven't run that by him yet. Because I have to do the leg work first to prep everything but if we can get started by 2 springs from now or next spring if we get moving fast enough. That will help our team that feeds the poor in Tacoma.

    Hi Bull,
    It is only the third day of summer and the heat index has reached 104F here in Sylacauga, Al. To keep the garden going, I am having to increase my watering to daily with the exception of my GreenStalk towers, and tomato plants. The towers hold enough water to go a couple days, even in the summer heat, and the tomato roots are deep enough to get to water.
    I don’t like the growth habits of the Beit Alpha and Katrina cucumber vines. They are ground huggers. I miss the shade the cucumbers provided by covering my trellis tunnel, so I’ll probably go back to growing International Pickling cucumbers next year. The red noodle beans are productive enough, but I still prefer the Blue Lake or Rattlesnake pole beans, so I’ll be going back to growing them next year too. I still have plenty of beans left from last year, so the red noodle beans are just an experiment this year.
    Overall, the garden is still going strong, and I am harvesting pole beans, cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes most days. The little chicks are starting their third week; their wings are fully feathered, and they have tail feathers. They are fluttering about inside their pen, perching on a branch that I cut for a practice roost, and doing a lot of scratching and digging in the pine shavings. They don’t need the heat from the heating pad any longer, so it is now unplugged. Time to start getting them used to the temperature, so they are acclimatized for their new home.
    The chicken coop, which has a small run is assembled. I am lining the perimeter with stepping stones, to make it as predator proof as I can. A larger chicken run is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Once assembled, it will be a cage within a cage with it surrounding the hen house. Together it will give my five hens 125 square feet of living space, enough room for a dozen chickens. The chicken run is not predator proof. It is enough to keep my cats out, them safe from hawks, and keep them inside. It is also a deterrent from neighbors who might think of them as a free meal. The run will have a lock on it, not enough security for anyone determined to get to them, but between the lock and the motion sensor alarm, enough to make them think twice before I confront them.
    How is your weightloss coming along? I've lost 34lbs so far, and I am using a lot less insulin, about 1/3 the amount. I've eliminated bread from my diet, unless it is homemade. Getting away from processed, or worse, ultra-processed foods has gone a long way towards improving my health. Improving health is bad news for my doctor. Soon, I'll be one less patient on his sick list. Oh, my legs have healed enough to start riding my ebike again, but right now, it is too damn hot. It may have to wait for cooler weather.

    • @TheBullsGarden
      @TheBullsGarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I been watering twice daily to keep my plants alive this heat is ridiculous. That’s the beauty of gardening, we keep mental notes of what works and what needs to be tweaked for the following season. So nice to hear about the baby chicks and the coop development, the last bunch of chicks I picked up are now happily living in the big girls coop and part of their folk. I’m so fortunate, we have plenty of cats in the neighboring homes but don’t come around messing with my chickens 🙏. Ever since I took that trip to Puerto Rico, I been slipping and regained 10 of the 22, I lost but I’m back to my regime this week. I’m glad you’re healing and back on the saddle riding your bike. Have an amazing week and I’ll talk to you soon

    So you have private garden AND a church garden?😮
    I’m totes jelly. 😂
    I have a garden in my apartment and have been trying to start a church garden for 3 years. It hasn’t worked yet. Gardening for food isn’t big in my neighborhood despite living in an impoverished neighborhood that almost qualifies as a good dessert. Or maybe it’s BECAUSE of that. 🤨
    Either way it feels like a sign to re-prioritize.
    Maybe next year will work better. I’ve decided to go with the flow and concentrate on my own garden this year and finishing my book on gardening myths and my journey of turning the disadvantages of poor health, lack of money and gardening in a studio apartment, into an ADVANTAGE.
    However I still need a place to distribute my extra seedlings. I refuse to waste them. Hopefully I’ll be able to start off small with a plant giveaway at church or organization and clear out space for the plants I’m keeping.
    One day I want to have what you have. A personal garden with more space and an outdoor garden I can help with or start. The little experience I have planting outdoors in the ground was enough to get me hooked.
    You are an inspiration. God bless you.

    • @TheBullsGarden
      @TheBullsGarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Amen to all you spoke my friend. You have the right mindset, keep striving forward, God, will make a way.
      I think bringing seedlings to giveaway at church may light the fire and get people talking about gardening and growing their own food. After, the giveaway put together your plan with space and dimensions and for the harvest distribution.
      Find yourself a few dedicated individuals to get the garden going and set rules about the harvest
      Strive hard to get your own property in the near future, there’s nothing like coming outside to your own grocery store
      Peace and blessings your brother Bull

      @@TheBullsGarden Oh my, Gold Medal may be one for you to try next year if you like trying new varieties (and comparing). I haven't been a fresh tomato eater for most of my life...but then I started growing them and my tastebuds were finally on-board with those beauties. I still don't buy them from the grocery store, though. Gold Medal is very sweet, low acid, and I think they taste like perfection...as do Mortgage Lifter and Aunt Ruby's German Green (I have 3 favorite slicers). I hope you get to try them!

    The garden is looking beautiful brother. The pickle worms destroyed the cucumbers this year and the strange thing is I've never had them before. I'm now wondering if they came in some soil I bought. I like growing organic but if they come for the fall crop I might have to get something harsher. BT works after they have already ruined the cukes, I'd like to deter them before they gnaw into the cukes.
