    Ryan confusing Tschüß with cheese reminds me of a Scottish friend of the family who was invited to my Great-Grandmas 100th birthday. Most of the old people there couldn't speak any English, and he doesn't speak any German, but they absolutely adored him. So when the birthday ended they all went to say farewell to him with "Tschüß" to which he responded with "Cheers" with a slightly confused "raising your glass hand motion" until we explained what it really means

    The Bratkartoffeln recipe was really weird to me. I mean she used all the right ingredients as far as I know, but you don't have to spread the potatoes out and flip them while frying. I know Bratkartoffeln as frying onions and bacon and then chucking your leftover portatoes in the pan (usually way more than 4 big potatoes). So its not wrong, its just weird to watch it being made with so much effort

    • @vsmash2
      @vsmash2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Methinks its a bit like people making egg fried rice form scratch for videos on the internet. It is not wrong but it feels wrong. Bratkartoffeln (/ Restepfanne) and egg fried rice are dishes to use up leftovers.

    • @stef987
      @stef987 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      My mother apparently makes them from raw potatoes and in the same exact way as in the video. I usually make them from raw potatoes myself, but turn them over repeatedly in the process. I used to dislike onions mixed under the potatoes (I used to put them on the plate separately, maybe as a pile on top of the potatoes), but recently I noticed that I do like them now mixed with the potatoes. I really doubt that there is a right or wrong way to make them. It's probably a question of how people had made them in their childhood and/or how they learned to make them the best way when they started to cook themselves. There are probably several ways.

    • @Zach2003
      @Zach2003 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@stef987 yes, that's what I also thought while writing this comment. I often hear people get angry that a recipe of the internet is not their version of the dish they like, and I didn't want my comment to sound that way. It's just ironic to see a dish I know as something thrown together (from leftovers) being cooked in such a "fancy" way (I mean it's not really fancy, just made with more effort than how I know it)

    • @stef987
      @stef987 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zach2003 ah, I understand and you're right. Actually while I was typing, I thought about how it's "traditionally" probably a dish made of leftovers and as that of course the potatoes would be boiled in most cases and everything just kind of tossed together.😅
      Well, I guess it's one of these dishes people started to love so much that they don't necessarily use leftovers anymore. But I know what you mean, it really is a bit ironic to make it in a relatively fancy fashion.

    I am German and if I've got a sore throat I immediately put a scarf around my neck, also at night. I also put some cotton wool in my ears in order to keep the throat and the head warm. If it stays warm, the throat doesn't dry out. If it dries out, the surface can finely tear and crack and any bacteria or pathogens can enter into the body much more easily!
    So for me, it helps me a lot and it doesn't harm the body! 👍

So there is no need to establish a system of inherited guilt.

    It's not cheese, but tschüss, which is derivated from Walloon "adjuus" which either derivated from French "adieu" or "à dieu" or from Spanish "adiós". Other derivates with same meaning are adjüs, adjes, tjüs. Those variations are mostly used in the northern and western regions, while southern Germans prefer the older "ade", derivated from the Northern French variation "adé". And Bavarians say "Pfüat di", abbreviating the phrase "Behüt dich Gott" (Be guarded by god), which has similar origins in Christianity.

    Austrians don't like German "Piefkes" which is their term for German tourists from the more northern regions (which they often perceive as somewhat snotty), while Bavarians call those people "Saupreissn" (which means lit. sow Prussians - sow used here like bitch in English). The enmity between Prussians and Austrians goes back to the War of the Austrian Succession (which Prussia lost in the end, but still won Silesia. Some historians count it as the first World War, since France, Sweden and Naples sided with Spain, Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony, while the UK, Russia and the United Netherlands sided with House Habsburg-Lorraine), but it became hot with the German War of 1866, as Prussia allied with Italy to attack the Austrian-led German Federation. Also some Germans tend to be a bit snotty about the small "Alps republic" and it's allegedly hillbilly inhabitants.

    OMG kinda of 50 years ago here in Italy a lot of fish vendor used this sticky tape, many apllied this tape on the four wings of a fan. but was so disgusting to see all creepy fly and mosquito and bug captured, nobody used anymore. However, in the city insects are very few while in the countryside you usually get used to them. There are a thousand systems on sale such as electrified screens with blue neon behind them, or small ultrasound emitters that work attached directly to the sockets, or even insect deterrent perfume dispensers. Almost all of these are somewhat effective but not too much. Some natural remedies such as citronella candles or coils are more effective but they are inconvenient because you have to light them and place them, they stay on for a while then you also have to clean them, they are usually used sporadically like in the evening if you want to dine in the garden. The remedies that I find most effective in my opinion are very natural, such as planting pyrethrum plants in the ground or in pots near the windows.

    A scarf, onions and potatoes are typical cheap aids for me, against mild cold symptoms.
    The scarf warms and protects against further draughts. In addition, the warmth can relieve some of the pain. Onion juice (chop the onion, put sugar on it. Let it steep a little so that the juice comes out, then take a teaspoon of the juice) helps against sore throats. Since onions contain essential oils that act against bacteria and germs, it is a good remedy for a cold. You only smell a bit strong maybe. ;) And hot potatoes wrapped in a cloth are the best hot water bottle of all.

So you can use the rest of the salty cooked potatoes from yesterday and make a totally new dish for today out of it. The real secret is the right amount of salt, garlic is important you also can use rosmary or nutmeg🤓😉

    Only thing I really need to say is that you can make Bratkartoffeln in many different ways. You don’t need the bacon, you can make it with sausage or eggs and MOST IMPORTANTLY: boil the potatoes a day before making Bratkartoffeln, it has been proven to taste better that way (Don’t quote me on that, though) and you can just use leftover potatoes from a different meal, which is really practical and you don’t have to worry about making too many potatoes either.

    Austrians and germans were historicly "the same" country and people from around 500 BC all the way to the 1700s when Napoleon split it. However austrians and germans still viewd themselves as one people living in 2 nations all the way up to the 1950s when the wall was errected and tensions grew.
    Ever since thy try hard to show their differences. Which is kinda funny cause "germans" are split into many regional subcultures that differ more from each other than germany as a whole would from austria as a whole. Bavarians and austrians are the same people geneticly hailing from the same germanic tribe of the bajuvari, who speak a similiar dialect with similiar accent and share most of their culture and traditions.

And boy we could tell the difference between all 3, not just a little language difference, but their style, attitudes and social quirks. Austrians were farmers, a lil racist, and very much rule followers. Swiss were just rich, and kept to themselves. Germans were very friendly and travelled a lil more, knew more english etc. These are just my personal observations. But the one thing they all had in common, their love of bread, beer and pommes.

      As a German living in Austria, I totally resonate with this description. In Austria, there's a different word for almost everything. Germans do understand these words, and Austrians understand the German word, but they give you a funny look when I speak the German words. As for the farmers, instead of "Mülleimer" (garbage bin) Austrians say "Mistkübel", which reminds me of an old wooden dirty bucket with pig manure in it. Instead of Treppe (stairs) they say Stiege, which reminds me more of a ladder leading upstairs in a barn. As time passed, I started to really dislike many Austrian expressions, like saying manure instead of garbage for example. I'm definitely not snooty, I'm just German and I don't have manure in my kitchen.

      Statistics usually show that we Austrians speak better English than Germans. I think a lot of it depends on what region of Germany we are talking about. I have family in Saxony, and when I compare Austrians to Saxons, it is the opposite to what you described. Likee the level of racism and the rudeness I experienced in Saxony is not something I know here in Austria. And a lot of people barely learned English there, I think in the GDR they often learned Russian.
