    I remember him with the lounge lizards in 81 opening the newly reformed king crimson* performance in London. The band played 5 songs and he broke a guitar string in each song. When only one string was left, he picked up a saxophone and played a short octave apart duet with the saxophonist which concluded the show.
    *In this very first live event, the Fripp-Belew-Levin-Bruford King Crimson line-up, played under the name ''Discipline''.

      Goofmuffin Skittelicious actually a majority of the no wave scene was people seeing other bands like the Ramones and all that and wanting to play music but didn't have the experience to play.
      Arlo actually bought his guitar one month before starting DNA. Lydia lunch was also fairly new to music when she first started. Less of a response to new wave sucking and more of a response to people just watching bands play and basically learning by watching.
      But also for Arlo to learn to play the way he did it really created this brand new weird sound that wasn't heard at the time and still isn't all that much even in noise rock. His next band the lounge lizards was some of the most revolutionary avante garde jazz out there I think

    • @francoismarchand5461
      @francoismarchand5461 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "response" was actually pre-existent to DNA and vastly superior:
      it's called POSTPUNK and was created by XTC, Talking Heads, B-52's,
      Wire, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke. All these bands have made fantastic albums before the 80's. DNA were NOT precursors. They were hacks.

    • @piemakerproductions
      @piemakerproductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Lydia Lunch put it nicely. No wave is personal insanity elevated to the stage. I love No Wave because it's teaming with anxiety. With all the noise and yelps. It's cathartic.

    • @francoismarchand5461
      @francoismarchand5461 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That would be right if these people sounded genuinely "insane". But to me they don't. To me their insanity sounds fake, just a gimmick. Contrived. It's not haunted: it's merely Halloween. In the late 70s and early 80s there was far more genuine anxiety and insanity in more "disciplined" bands like the Talking Heads, King Crimson, B-52's, Sonic Youth, Adam and the Ants, Killing Joke, and above all Siouxsie & the Banshees. "No wave" was a mere novelty relying on a single-note trick (pun intended) "check us out we're unlistenable-to extremely disturbed and very special kids, we're so out there". Not different from juiceless, hypocritical punk (Sex Pistols). The fact that no wave didn't survive at all as a musical genre (unlike postpunk that still resonates today) says a lot about its merits. Want anxiety and insanity? Rather check the Residents, Current 93, Coil. Now you'd be talking. Want cathartic? Check out Dog Faced Hermans. Oh and the Banshee's "The Lord's Prayer".

    anyone can give me the tuning?

      I always assumed that Arto started off in standard and never really gradually just let everything get detuned. Now that I think about it though, he may have tuned to something specifically. Tell me if you ever find out, best answer I have is from this Night Music video where he shows it but it’s probably different from this song:
      It’s at 4:49
