I saw this band when they came to Tokyo in '89. They played at a small live house jam packed and standing room only. After playing the first song in tune, Arto Lindsay untuned his guitar like the one he is playing in this video. During the break between the songs, he saw we were all kind of quietly waiting for the next song (you know how the Japanese are) and he asked us "Don't you guys have any friends here?" It was funny.
not to mention dave sanborn, hiram bullock, george duke, habib faye..........so many great musicians we've lost, in hiram and habib's case reasonably young
I bought the LP back then and love it until now. Then I saw them, bringing their production to stage and what really blew my mind was, that they really could perform the unbelievable complexity of the rhythms with this highly professional attitude and give even more, adding this joy of play, this video is testify too. Couldn't find any other gem of this stunning unique and vital band, thanks so much for posting.
I saw them at the record release party at SOB’s in New York and it was one of the finest shows I’ve ever seen. The album doesn’t come close. Love those guys.
Tony and Melvin are just outrageous here. Killer rhythm section and a great production mix by this show.. the sound is awesome. Credit to Arto for his recruiting skills. I try to deny it, but I find these tunes mesmerizing and infectious. Uniquely trippy, free, and funky all at once. This is a seriously unique treat.
the dorky avant-garde frontman. the house band straight out of an 80s instructional yoga tape. the sinisterly intense spanish percussionist. this is something that is like a fever-dream. but its real and actually happened. this video, its like a peep into a hyper-reality where everything is a non-sequitur.
The space in Admit It is quite astonishing. There is so much going on but they've somehow created this incredible separation. I guess thats what great rhythm sections do.
Nossa, há anos não ouvia esse som (amava demais, tocava direto na 89). Foi quando reconheci o tamborim, e logo vim pesquisar aqui no YT uma performance ao vivo. Adorei saber q era um brazuca!!!
I was busking/downtown Chicago; and I play drums also, and Cyro was in town and happened to walk right by as we are playing and I stopped and yelled his name and really made his day
Saw this when it first aired and was the point of origin for me with Arto (even though I was aware of his participation on the first Lounge Lizards album). Probably his most accessible record, but his solo stuff all have their own charms.
great program Night Music!!!! I watched and taped this back in the day. plus was already an Arto Lindsay fan from his DNA days and still a fan. cheers y'all from the big hills of osage county
Good gawd again the very brave and naively unique tv show...oh my were we blessed...only place i could find such original music in the middle of Paula Abdul muzak😂
@@mat..n.7061 Well Adrian Belew is an amazing and highly original sounding guitarist. Arto Lindsay is not a guitarist in the true sense. He only uses the guitar as a percussion/noise instrument. And even if he knows how to really play it, we never see or hear him doing it.
Keep both hands where I can see them. In a gold convertible. Head me off at the pass. You shrug off my compliments before they can adorn you. You’re no exception to the laws of symmetry. Why is your bathrobe always hanging open. For a Brazilian this guy wrote pretty good lyrics.
I like The Ambitious Lovers, not a bad way... we were in the 80's... And exactly, it sounds like the Talking Heads The band is really good and Arto made excellent records with Peter Scherer, as "Pretty Ugly", more abstract... I can understand this desire of funky groove, a kind of Steely Dan finally with more punk spirit. Prince is in the house.
Maybe more Joe Jackson than Steely Dan, but the Belewisms are totally relevant to the Talking Heads vibe.. And Steely Dan were pretty fucking punk. I wonder what NYC bands would have sounded like if Arto had of made the transition to popular success that Sonic Youth managed. Cheers pal! I dig your analysis.
It’s interesting how in 1989 music was still instinctively 80s. This song has 80s all over it. It couldve came out 8 years earlier and I wouldnt be surprised. It would completely fit. But if we just go one year forward to 1990 then it would no longer fit.

ha great story
This is the high water mark of the 20th century.
ANN KLEIN ON GUITAR!
Night Music was a treasure trove. RIP Hal Wilner

I was really stoned when this first aired and I somehow never forgot it.
Epic, love and peace to you brother, this video is amazing for me I’m archiving it permanently cause I love it and need more lol

Melvin Gibbs on bass, damn
These guys and the Pixies on Night Music changed how I listened to music. Good times.

You have a yoga tape with Melvin Gibbs playing bass?
Brazilian percussionist, not spanish.
And while we're at it, why is it raining?
The space in Admit It is quite astonishing. There is so much going on but they've somehow created this incredible separation.

the great brazillian percusionist Cyro Baptista
Thanks for identifying Mr. Baptista. The guy has a great rhythmnic concept!

Owning one 3rd of the stage in a 7 piece band! I love it!
I was busking/downtown Chicago; and I play drums also, and Cyro was in town and happened to walk right by as we are playing and I stopped and yelled his name and really made his day
How else likes Arto and the Ambitous Lovers so much ? Obviously so unknown , uncomparable !
What kind of king crimson is this? They are marvelous!
one of my favourite guitarists!
mine too
I must say when Jesus Quintana isn't bowling he tears it up on percussion. Interesting stuff. Thanks for uploading it.
My pleasure! Thanks for the note of appreciation, and glad you enjoyed the clip.
One of my influences here "Greed" was a sleeper cult classic..production/sounds/texture & "color"..this was too cool!
Big fan of these guys. Definitely influenced me during my musician days.
Never missed an episode, watching on a 13" b&w set I fished out of the trash by the Williamsburg Bridge. Those were the days...
Arto is a big big name in the music, as musician, producer and part of mythical bands like The golden palominos for example.
and, notably, the Lounge Lizards. This was back when irony was a thing, but not everything.
The Ambitous Lovers ! Guitar sounds , groove and lyrics were genius....
Also no wave band DNA
enjoyed every second of this
Me too. And, as somebody already noticed: absolutely goose bumps
One of the best live performances ive ever seen on television or in person...this is what today's music is missing...great job.
do agree...and every single word is absolutely true
Band is on fire! Damn.
My mind is blown away! I was born this year......and I most certainly appreciate.
two masterpieces
Goose bumps.
My god, man. Arto and band are totally on fire here. Too bad Jool's words didn't come true.
this is so amazing, this groove and Arto's guitar,,legendary
yep wow, what a great relic! dang...
Arto, , apenas! O norte americano/brasileiro que mais amo.
Thank you for uploading this masterpiece video!
You're welcome! Thanks for the note of appreciation, and glad to know you enjoyed it so much :)

My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed the clip, and took the time to say so. Much appreciated.
love this
Mix of everything good in mid-1980s New York
Demais, esse som!!!!
Amazing! I saw Melvin Gibbs last year at a tiny venue in New York-how is he not a household name?
This is a knockout!!
Good gawd again the very brave and naively unique tv show...oh my were we blessed...only place i could find such original music in the middle of Paula Abdul muzak😂
It's like David Byrne and Adrian Belew had a little brother....
Thing is Adrian knew how to play a guitar
@@mrbungle3310 arto is proof you dont need to know to be great

I liked it when he fisted the congo drum at 2:19
And judging by the sound it made, the act wasn't totally consensual.
Cuíca
that's a quica, a brazilian drum
This band was smoking hot. They were tight as hell. Brilliance wrapped in madness.
Steve Buscemi on guitar, John Turturro on percussion...
GLORY
Love it!!
This is so fucking brilliant
Is that the guy from DNA on guitar and vocal?
Yes
Hell yeah
Yes

You're Right !Listen to his Prince Cover Erotic City , so fucking great . It's a lot of erotic in his music ...
Astonihing , I listened to Steely Dan , before I was comin here !
There is a great movie with Fred Frith, inventing noise music, "Step across the border". For me this noise makes musical sense.
Nah. They sound nothing like Talking heads. This is way better than Talking headzzzz.
arigato(thanks)
Fodaaaaa!!!!!!❤❤❤
Come for the fashion, stay for the Bongo Fisting
genius vocalist
taeko ohnuki too
M. Gibbs is badass
❤
This is so hella awesome! #marcribot

Is this a roland jazz chorus I spot 🔍
リンゼイ先輩かっけーです
funky. weird but sort of endearing interviewer
I like him , kind of shy , but open and interested.
killer
Love to see a young and deranged Cyro Baptista on percussion.
Did he drop his pick at one point nice scoop
The evil Talking Heads
* Who’s the backup singer (?)
DK Dyson
めちゃくちゃ良い

so that's what christian bale was doing prior to all those movies, killing on the percussion

I know. That kind of thing fascinates me, how a sound can be totally a symbol of a time and just a couple of years later is out.
зайцев + 1 отжигает
どうやらチューニングが肝そう😮
drummer who?
Sounds like the talking heads
Didn't Arto actually produced a David Byrne album also?
Imagine how good it would be if Arto ever figured out how to play.
Watching videos like this really makes you realize how terminally boring and worthless most music is.
american standard
order & disorder
I loved Blonde Red Head - DNA - otherwise a John Zorn' hanger on' nothing more
grai poupon I thought that was Arto Lindsay. Glad to know I wasn’t mistaken.
not a good singer or guitar player, but he's doin it anyway!
That's what great musicians do!
why is the pervert from DNA trying to do a cringe version of Prefab Sprout
Is he a pervert? Not familiar with what he’s done outside of some of his music.
Holy shit that was the worst thing I've ever seen done to a guitar. Where is the rape whistle on this thing?
That dude was the dad in Alf.
Im good untill he plays the guitar
