      Quick steel is another good one I have used it to hold a sheered off top gearbox mount, I have also used it to repair a diesel tank that had been speared at the bottom.

    Hi Scott.. Re your taillight repairs, your best bet is probably to use the fact the material is a thermoplastic. Use a soldering iron that has a tip designed for plastics to literally melt the plastic together, and melt new plastic into the gaps. You could probably sink metal strips into the plastic using heat as well. The repair should last far far longer than glue. There should be many youtube videos to learn from, and I'm sure there is some similar scrap plastic around to practice on. This of course works best for plastic that will be hidden from view. E.g. I've fixed holes in lawn mower gas tanks with a zip tie (melted in), Now that I've learned how to do this, it is my first go to before glue...

      Yep. plastic can be welded, and much more plastic and mesh wire to reinforce. Also there is great materials, that are like liquid plastic and harden to similar specs as plastic.

      the part itself is breaking tho so adding more "part" to it makes sense vs. just attaching, it'll just break in another place. cold carbon wet dab skin the base of it and the stems tho too. or cut the base and 3d print a matching holder then.

    Great work Scott. Making some good progress. For the rear diffuser you can find a person that repairs carbon bikes. He can lay carbon cloth over the original component. The repair on the fin will be stronger than original. You get the carbon look diffuser. For only maybe 500 grams of weight. The bike frame guys do amazing fine work laying cloth.

Neither of which makes for the most entertaining episodes. Im guessing the P1 will take at least a year to rebuild. If not more. If he ever finishes it.

    Wonder if you could put some self adhesive foam under / above the tail lights to support them a bit. This way it doesn't have 6" of light vibrating around behind the mounts to stress them.
    At the moment it is probably behaving like a plastic ruler being twanged from a school desk!

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To reinforce the light fixings I've used Milliput 2-part epoxy putty. I just secured the broken pieces in the correct place with superglue and then moulded a pear-shaped blob round each plastic fixing, making them around 15-20 mm wide, basically double the thickness of the original. You have to run the reinforcements well into the body of the light so you don't just transfer the stress to another weak area. It's easy to shape, moulds like putty, is highly adhesive and sets like rock. No further problems for 15,000 miles now.

    I think a manual conversion of the Scud would generate a lot of interest and rid you of future F1 issues. To my knowledge, there are two options available, the less expensive $13000 USD. Samcrac has done this install on his 360.

    Scott -- I've had to fix lots of plastic tabs and such on motorcycles. My go to is to first superglue the broken piece in place then use several layers of fiberglass w/ epoxy to strengthen all around the repair area. Did the same on my Toyota Tacoma marker light tab a bit ago - broke in the similar way to your taillight. That one had a strange geometry, but the fiberglass conformed, no problem to reinforce the joint; worked 100%.

  • @titusm9837

    For rear lights use an aluminium pipe for the "tower" one.
    Dremmel out the extra plastic -- insert alu pipe and epoxy glue it in place.
    Maybe extra epoxi on base for larger cover area.
    At 400/piece is almost worth building one from the start and than use the molds for selling aftermarket.

    Just for your knowledge. That " F1 pump " is the same one that is used on a Alfa Romeo or Fiat. Actually the pump , which is a small square part underneath the elektromotor is also used in the DSG from VW.
    Not sure with Ferrari but on most Italian cars the pressure will go up to 50 bar and will go down to around 42 when you put it in gear. When the pressure is getting to low the elektromotor will pump it back up.
    So in the future i would check the carbon brushes on the motor and maybe check the little magneti marelli sensors for the gears ....they might have metal shavings....
    All the best!!

  • @joejung7401
    @joejung7401 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best fix for the rear tail lights on the 430s is to use plastifix to rebuild the plastic. This product is used to repair motorcycle fairings. Bolster the repair with E 6000 which is a rubber like material that prevents further cracking of the original plastic. You have to remedy the vibration by using Teflon felted washers in addition to the stock washers to help absorb the vibration from the flat plane V8. Which causes the taillights anchoring points to crack. Hope this helps. Awesome project.😂

    For pressure loss, It can also be the ediff solenoid other than the pump or accumulator (although it may still be the pump / acc). Constant pressure loss / repriming tends to be pressure loss at the solenoid element of the diff. There is a way you can channel off the different sections of the hydraulics to test each element.

    for brittle plastic breaks that need reinforcement i really recommend some superglue mixed with some baking soda, you then reinforce it with thread that you wrap around, lacing it with more superglue and baking soda - it doesn't look pretty but it is effing strong and the thread spreads future force over a much bigger area.

Body work and paint is expensive, unless you can perfectly match the panels that need to be repainted to help keep costs down. Can't wait for the F40 project to begin, but I have a feeling you're going to be fixing up and selling some of your current cars to help fund that as well, so it might be a bit longer wait.

    The only way you can repair the problem with the taillights, is that have them 3D printed out of material that dry rots slower than the plastic Ferrari chose to use. No matter how you repair it, that plastic has become brittle over time, due to the excess engine heat in the rear of the car, and will always continue breaking. At some point, they will just crumble into pieces, no matter how you reinforce them, they're going to keep breaking. Have them 3D scanned, and have them printed out of a material that is resistant to heat. Maybe even get a set made out of metal, and put a Glass lens in the back of them ...

    • @lasskinn474
      @lasskinn474 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      metal 3d printing a piece that takes a large volume like that tends to be expensive. resin printing would get clear enough.
      prob is of course that they'd be repros then affecting value. just for using the car though there's plenty of stuff made of glass that you could 3d print brackets for to hold them in the hole.
      as for fixing it, a 3d printed jig to hold it while doing the fixes would help quite a bit and instead of metal could wet lay some carbon on there.

    • @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg
      @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lasskinn474The thing about repros is that once everyone starts using them it ceases to be an issue. Sooner or later all these lights are going to disintegrate and the reproductions will be all that’s left.

      @lasskinn474 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg and the less there are the more expensive originals get so thats a bit of a catch 22. of course even then the best would be to just stick whatever lights on the car when you're using it and just stash the originals in some cool and dark storage.

    Issue with gluing metal as reinforcement for plastic is they can have different thermal expansion coefficients- metal changes quite a bit more than plastic typically IIRC- so over time, unless some plasticity is provided by the glue, the metal and glue/plastic will work themselves apart. However perhaps a very long time in the UK with a milder seasonality. Or maybe it's really just an issue with CRP

    What I thought you were going to do on the light repair was melt the metal tabs into the plastic. If you had cut some small slits in the light and the broken tab you could have put the metal into the slit and put in the glue. Your way worked too :-)....looking good.

    Nice fix Scott!!! I'd have gone with a two part panel bond as I reckon that'll outlast the Araldite. Still be interesting to see how long it holds up for 😉

    Love this car. It is turning out to be a very great deal that you found.. but I knew the BBi would be a journey for you just because of the year of the car. Then you have that F40 build coming, my definitely a couple of years of content mate!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

    for plastics like the tail lights rather than adhesive i usually will plastic weld the parts together with some metal reinforcement put into the plastic weld. Might be worth looking into for future. an old soldering iron can do alot of the welding but there are better things on the market that could work quite well in these situations. Just my 2 cents. nice job by the way.
