  • This video showcases the physical limitations of our upper control arm ball joints and explains the most common reason for failure: The vehicle is too low.
Ball joint failure has been a common topic in the community with regards to our upper control arm kits for the Honda/Acura platform. When the vehicle is too low, a significant amount of travel is removed from the upper ball joint. Unfortunately, ball joints do have their limitations in range of motion and this is going to be common in any upper control arm that still harnesses a ball joint.

Sooo let me get this right. You make a part to correct camber do to a car being lowered but your part won’t last on a lowered car... my understanding this right?

And when the redesign replacement ball joints came out, they would not offer any discount on the replacements. J'd2.

Umm ball joints should not move that easy. We are not stupid your cheap non performance ball joints are. Mine went out in a month and my car is on stock suspension. JUNK2

I believe they are commenting on EXCESSIVE lowering... if you go a couple of inches I am pretty sure those will work just fine. If you are going 4-5 inches then yes you are reaching the limit of the overall construction AND DESIGN of the suspension and will probably need to build a custom setup.

That's what I keep trying to tell these fools.

So performance ball joints have only lasted me a year of daily driving on a lowered car where you can stick 2 fingers in the tire gap but the factory oem honda control arms on the same ride height last 10+ years. Either you guys need to offer some kind of longer warranty or make a better ball joint. I love Skunk2 parts except these upper front ball joints are wearing out way to fast.

This is exactly why I will not be purchasing any aftermarket front/rear upper control arms. OEM Honda quality control arms are exceptional. I'd rather spend my money on something reliable that is going to last me for years. You also don't need a camber kit to correct negative camber, you just need to adjust the toe setting with a proper alignment.

Fyi for those curious, the only way to correct this and want to keep the car at its lowest height is to modify your spindles shorter. That way, you relieve the ball joint from bottoming out like that and your ball joints will last a lot longer.

On my third pair of ball joints and my alignment shop confirmed I am well within safe specs. Customer service emailed me no more than two sentences in reply to my concerns. Supposedly they've re-designed the ball joints. Still so very disappointed......

Skunk2, is this REALLY your response? As a premium level component manufacturer, I would have expected a more professional and technically detailed description of operational conditions. Also, if a market exists for increased articulation, then respond by engineering a suitable component to accommodate it. If the customer wishes for the chassis to contact the ground before the LCA binds, then design around their requests accordingly. But most of all, avoid responding in a video like this.
    Best wishes.

Very sorry the response was not more professional or technically detailed; not everything needs to be full blow production! The video did its job... it addresses why cars that are too low see ball-joint failures. As for the "market" that exists and engineering a suitable component... we have a department that decides where R&D efforts are focused and until they see something that makes business sense, consumers should use the product as it was intended to be used or EXPECT the product to live a short life.

Why not make better ball joints or a better camber kit that reduces ball joint stress

or maybe just deal with it if you are going to slam your car to the ground. its not skunk2 or any other companys fault. its the user itself.

cowdoodles lol U must drive a bicycle or something there's worse shit than slamming your car like driving with too much camber but it's all a style....u might not like it but other ppl do! I don't drive slammed or cambered my shit is for track use n fully functional...but as a car guy I understand every one has there own style
