I got a question. I had cateraked (sorry I have autism and schizoaffective disorder) on both my eyes and they said I had the option to get artificial lenes put in both my eyes (I was legally blind) but now I can't see things close up without reading glasses and I don't like them can I get my old eyes back, please?
Oh. I have nystagmus too so I can't do a byfolcal
Or is there a special pair of glasses that can do both long and short version (with no bifocal)

Most optometrist shops never explain the differences between all these coatings, they just automatically recommend the most expensive coating, which make me suspect that they are just upselling but there is really no difference.

    • @Steel-Pinnings

Fortunately when I bought my first pair of glasses (at age 30) the seller ordered the anti reflective lenses without asking. Even before this video I didn't know there are more types of anti reflective lenses. Mine are the greenish ones (I guess they are cheaper) but I was never proposed another type. Thanks for the video, so much new information!

I previously heard you mention the Crizal Sapphire coatings. I spent a small fortune on them and they were the absolute worst coatings I ever had. After a few months, it looked like I had scratched the lenses with sandpaper. That was just the coating peeling off. My local optical shop honored the warranty except I had to pay $25 for shipped to and from and wait about 3 weeks. The same thing happened about 10 months later. No warranty for the second failure. Since then I have had great luck with standard coatings and lenses from Costco and from Zenni.

I've bee using prevencia coated lens for ages (at least 7-8 years)
I even wash it with soap or even use sanitizers. No issues here.
I think the issue is with the 'premium' sapphire coating rather than crizal itself.
But I've heard that Zeiss is actually better to avoid glare, so I am thinking of getting a spare with Duravision, but I can't make up my mind which one to go for, platinum (sapphire competitor) or Blueprotect (prevencia competitor).

      @kazielbonn ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yep, can't have that yellow tint if you are in a profession that decides what colours to use for a project. I had Prevencias many years ago; the yellow tint was something I could get used to as I wasn't doing professional graphic design but the purple reflex colour was so obnoxious I moved to the Crizal Forte when I got new frames. But as those have broken at the bridge, I am in the market for new ones and am seriously thinking of getting the Sapphire HR.

As an artist that does very detailed work, I always get Glass lenses because they offer clearer details than the plastic lenses and they are harder to scratch...unless things have changed and I'm not aware of any plastics that can compare to them. es, they are heavier, but these qualities matter more to me.

Very thorough as always, Doc. However, I must say I strongly believe it's time you dive properly into the available evidence regarding blue light and stop promoting it. I think it hurts your credibility.
I just recently wrote a systematic review as my bachelor's thesis about blue light in regards to digital eyestrain and sleep quality. After sifting through 250+ articles and rating the evidence of the final 4 articles we included with Gradepro software, we concluded that there's no evidence to suggest that blue light causes digital eyestrain, and that anti blue light coatings have no effect on the sleep wake cycle. If, however, you still want to reduce blue light before bedtime, using the night mode on your phone is far more effective at reducing blue light.
Also, studies showed that you're exposed to hundreds of times more blue light when outside on even a cloudy day compared to sitting in front of a computer. Finally, the few studies that claimed blue light was in fact harmful usually suffered from major bias, very low quality evidence and oftentimes massive conflicts of interests, like lens manufacturers sponsoring the studies/employing the authors or even paying them with shares and stocks in the company...

I appreciate your comment. Blue light filtration, while not entirely pointless, has become pretty gimmicky with a lot of misinformation out there. It is interesting that it is promoted to help with digital devices when, as you said, we get WAY more exposure from the sun than we get from any digital device out there.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Hey Christian! Thank you so much for calling this out. You are very right about the misinformation around blue light and It is frustrating the say the least. I have always tried to sort of...dance around blue light a little in videos in that there still seems to be some heavy debate about it within the industry and once again, the research is lacking.
From the research I have read (and perhaps I have not read all of the studies you have) the the most solid ground of any science is blue light affecting sleep cycles/mood, the challenge is by how much (time and intensity), what wavelength the ipRGC are most sensitive to (+ what wavelengths the lenses filter/block) and when you get exposed to it (time of day or night) are all the variables that I have had a hard time finding good scientific evidence to base a recommendation on. Perhaps it's too early to tell. (I usually recommend people to simply try to put screens away after sundown if they can or switch nightmode on) or if they want to try blue light glasses they can try them but that there is still not enough research out yet (I do trust some brands more than others though based on what we know about ipRGC and there wavelength sensitivity).
As you mentioned, many studies seem be lacking. Either by design, subject numbers or by conflict of interest.
When I first starting talking about blue light on the channel - I dug very deep into the studies and even attended extra lectures at national meetings on the subject (all which were free from corporate sponsorship and very skeptical about it as well), largely because I wanted to better understand it so I could give my best recommendations about it.
Blue light is a not a new concern to the eye care industry. The concern of blue light on retinal health has been theorized as contributing to possible retinal oxidative stress and possible disease, such as ARMD for example, has been around since the late 80s/90s. Sadly, many of the studies I have seen don't necessarily show much of a cause and effect. Or they were completed in extreme environments.
You are absolutely right about the sun causing more of an extreme source of blue light (which I have mentioned in several videos), yet the theory still stands that blue light from the sun could be more of a concern than other wavelengths ( UV light for example), because blue or violet light still penetrates through the crystalline lens to the retina better than other wavelengths. But...most epidemiological studies which suggest shorter wavelength light as a culprit are still...at best, just epidemiological studies largely done through questionnaires. (imagine asking an 80 year old man with macular degeneration how much he remembers wearing sunglasses as a kid...probably not the most useful info).
The short answer is that the human eye is very good at protecting itself from oxidative stress (to a point). Or at least until enough cholesterol and calcium build up in Bruchs membrane and the RPE begins to suffer, but either way we do know oxidative stress plays a roll in macular degeneration. The role blue light plays in retinal disease still needs more research.
One interesting study (which again is lacking in several things but raised my brow when I read it ((I also hate to cherry pick small studies, but again is interesting)) - had to do with blue light exposure contributing to uveal melanoma or at least the theory that it could raise the risk of uveal nevi converting to melanoma. Which most eye care professionals I speak to have never heard of such a concern. But then again, there is even debate in dermatology around blue light and it's effects on cutaneous nevi -
here is that article in case you had not seen it: jeccr.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1756-9966-28-48
The whole phenomena about blue light and eyestrain is highly doubted by myself and largely in the eye care industry. I can tell you clinically, a lot of people come in claiming it helps. Wether this is completely placebo effect, or just a slight photophobia reducing effect, if it helps people, it helps.
Most of the studies I haver ever come across on blue light glasses and eyestrain are very poorly designed. Including Dr Singh's research you sited. That study was so poorly designed I was shocked and somewhat embarrassed for the Journal of Ophthalmology that they published it.
-They selected their subjects based on a questionnaire about computer vision syndrome, which is not the same thing as eye strain - most of CVS is dry eye and the majority of the questions used that on questionnaire was about dry eyes (so how do you know you got true eyestrain subjects vs just dry eye subjects)
      - they tested Essilor Prevencia lenses, which have very little blue light filtering capabilities as it was designed at an early phase of the blue light craze and was meant to be an early response to concerns about retinal health risks to blue light and not eye strain or sleep cycles.
-They used CFF as an "objective measurement" of eyestrain which I have read about and while the theory sounds good, the results of research around that are also very mixed and in my opinion, doesn't make much sense.
-And of course, as with many of eyestrain studies, they for some odd reason decided a 2 hour long computer tasks was long enough to measure when people get eyestrain.
There are more things I could point out but that is all beside the point.
Other studies often lack in that they do near vision tasks for even less time or without standardizing for cycloplegic refractive power or screen for binocular vision issues beforehand.
I am not defending that blue light glasses help with computer eye strain, at this time, I personally doubt it really does (I feel refractive error, binocular vision, photophobia, dry eye, and ergonomics/lifestyle plays a much larger role in eye strain).
Overall, I am very happy you got to do your research on the topic and I would love to read it if you wouldn't mind sending me a copy. Happy to send you my notes/thoughts on it if you would like. If you are so inclined, please email to doctoreyehealth@gmail.com
Thanks again for watching and for commenting, it does mean a lot. Perhaps I can focus on making some "updated" blue light facts videos and can give you a shoutout for sharing your research/thesis/project with me.
      Wish you the best.
      -Joe

Very useful vid. Now, let's see you do one on the various tinted lenses from yellow, blue, green, violet, etc., as they all do serve specific purposes like yellow for sports field vision/dusk-driving, etc. *A lil secret... The blue or purple tinted ones seem to aid those with colorblindness, esp. red/green. [This as it is very hard to find red ones, esp. in polarised.] I have Rx pairs in yellow & blue, aside Transitions. (I dod suspect this is why most Enchroma Trivex lenses are more violet tinted as well.)
I have mild deutan, or green light wavelength weakness. Have taken both Ishihara & H.R.R. book tests to reveal same results each time as it is congenital w/ my grandfather & brother also having it to some degree. (My brother less than I.) I've also got mild visual snow/static syndrome to go along w/ it which also creates a consistent, low-pitched ear ringing or some sort of tinnitus. But, we're veering way off course here...

I am always close to the action and often above the stove and steam and heat...And at the end of the shooting day, my glasses are filled with ingredients. You can cook another meal from them. :) On camera lens I put clear filter to protect them. Now I have crizal sapphire but coating got all wrinkled that I see some strange halo and glow. I guess it is from the heat. Not sure if Rock would perform much better in those condition, but I will give them a shot. Here is one video I did.. It was alarming because this was the first time I experienced this. It was like beams in a disco or light show. I also have antiglare on my glasses. Can scratches on the lens cause this too?
