    What a wonderful discussion - I always love seeing you two talk about my favorite series. I agree with much of what was said, and found myself when reading this feeling like this was a big introduction to a larger conclusion. When combined with the final book, I would give this book a 10/5 score, but reading this book on it's own left me feeling like I was missing that cohesive "beginning/middle/end" that is there for all other MBOTF books outside of this one.

    • @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy

      Thanks, Matt! Dust of Dreams is definitely best engaged with, I think, as half of the story that is completed in The Crippled God. Or, as part 9 of 10! But, it’s less of a self-contained story than the other Malazan books.

    I am actually surprised here that neither of you saw the theme of "justice" in this book as I thought it was called out many times quite plainly. Justice for the extinct animals, the planet, the short tails, tool, the crippled god even. Also this is the first book where Ericson explicitly refered back to the names of specific previous books in the text which I thought was very interesting and wonder if he was refering back to the themes of those books.

  • @MacScarfield
    @MacScarfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The term I feel was on AP’s tongue when talking about spoilers, was “dramatic irony”: If were not a little kid, you knew in Ancient Athens how “The Iliad” or “Oedipus Rex” would end. It was the execution of the play and the acting, plus being «in on the joke (or rather tragedy)” before Characters in story. Essentially my experience of “Top Gun: Maverick”, with a big grin on my face all the way through!
    Speaking of images, in a more literal sense I am reminded of Victor Hugo’s point on the importance of images/reliefs and architecture before mass literary, essentially “The Notre Dame” is the main character of “The Hunchback”, and the book a big pamphlet for restoring the then neglected Cathedral after several revolutions and wars.

    • @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy
      @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s exactly right, MacScarfield. As you know, for most of human history, stories have been communal property, and since everyone knew most of those shared tales, the enjoyment was in the telling. All the best!

    Great discussion. Glad you're back!
    Interesting take on "that scene." You've given the argument probably most favorable to the author - what do you think is the argument that is most critical (but still fair) to the author?

    • @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy
      @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Richard! My interpretation of the inclusion of the scene in question is in line with what we articulated - that one of the jobs of literature is to deal with the difficulties and suffering of human existence, and that an author should explore such things as responsibly as possible by following up on the repercussions (not fixating on the specific incident in a way that’s voyeuristic and then dropping the matter). I feel strongly that Erikson consistently meets those criteria admirably.
