The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Is A Uniquely Rugged Compact SUV

  • Between the #SubaruForester and Outback, the #ForesterWilderness is the most capable and rugged version of the #Forester family and at the same time, for 2022 it gets a mid-cycle refresh to keep the line fresh. Just like the #OutbackWilderness, the #Wilderness version of the Forester gets all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, unique gearing in the transmission, and updated styling. It's a genuine alternative to a Jeep Cherokee or Toyota RAV4 Adventure and should help Subaru keep this model as the brand's best-seller.

    Happy Friday everyone! Between the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, and Subaru Forester Wilderness, which off-roady compact SUV would you choose? We would like to thrown in the Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition, but nobody had driven that trim yet and its not on sale either.

      I purchased a 2022 forester wilderness over the other options. The Jeep doesn’t have the best reliability or fuel economy and the Rav 4 TRD off road doesn’t really offer much over a regular rav4.
      I really wanted a 4Runner TRD off-road but it was $20,000 more and poor fuel mileage. I’ll wait for a plug in or hybrid 4Runner lol.

    The honesty and simplicity of the current Forester is refreshing. It's definitely a "get in it and go" type of vehicle. I'm glad they haven't stuck Subaru's new laggy infotainment in it. This head unit is basic but it has a lot of features and it is easy to use.

      Listen my friend you hit the nail right on the head. I have a 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx XT with the large infotainment system. This is the worst piece of tech I have ever used. It literally reboots in the middle of driving, sometime even with the safety system. It seems like it's gotten worse after their latest firmware update. My phone won't stay connected to Apple CarPlay. I love the vehicle but I can't stand the electronics. I am truly thinking of just defaulting to a Toyota next time but Toyota prices you out with basic options.

    I love my Forester Wilderness. It is very capable and could easily have more ground clearance than the Outback Wilderness if you upgrade the tires to the 65 series rather than the 60 series. (I understand that the only reason Subaru put 60's on this car was because of height limitation of their assembly line). Function wins out over form for most of us who enjoy this car and it easily out-performs the Outback Wilderness off-road. I did tons of research before buying this car and it works very well for me!

      Hey there thanks for the reply. I'm doing a ton of research on this vehicle as well and I think I'm ready to order one. I'll be doing a lot of BLM camping so the full-size spare is essential, along with the added weight capacity of the roof rails and the waterproof seats. In other words, I'll be using the vehicle for its intended purpose. My only hesitation is the mileage, so I was wondering if you've measured your actual mileage? Thanks, and glad to hear you're enjoying the car! And also do you know off-hand how much the ground clearance would be increased with the 65 tires vs the 60 that come on the vehicle? Thanks again.

    I've got one of these, and love it. Came from a '19 forester sport that I had lifted with a long travel suspension kit, and larger tires, so I had to give the same treatment to the wilderness.
    I'm completely fine with no turbo, it's got enough get up and go, and the transmissions they pair with the turbo models (the tr690) are less capable off road than the transmission in the foresters (the tr580), not to mention after monitoring things on my scangauge during a day of trail riding, you really don't need that much HP. The most my engine ever generated was about 50hp, and that included muddy steep climbs, and a 2100 foot climb in about 18 miles on pavement.
    Another thing I really like is the additional transmission cooler, compared to my old '19, which would be 200+ degrees during my day to day city driving and could get up to 240+ degrees out on the trails. my wilderness, with its cooler, and gearing and ratio changes, stays around 180 during several hours of city driving in a hot, humid city, and when offroading, never got close to the same temps my '19 would experience in day to day driving.

    Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. HAPPY TRAILS

For me, without a cooled seat option, I think I would just prefer decent, breathable cloth seats for our triple digit summers. Not sure I would pick either the Rav4 or Cherokee over this as it is a nice sweet spot of capability and usability (function over form), however I am interested to see if Honda makes an off-road trim for the next CRV (with ground clearance, decent tires and full size spare please)

    I'm actually trying to decide between the Wilderness and Touring trims. They obviously have a slightly different missions, but they are both capable vehicles and are close in price. I was surprised they were so close at first, but it actually makes sense if you look at the exclusive features each trim has. I was looking at the Sport trim at first, but immediately realized I wanted more features. I don't really need the added capability of the Wilderness, but more is always better. However, I've never owned a vehicle that was loaded with creature comforts, like the Touring, and it still has most of the capability of the Wilderness. Plus it gets 2-5 mpg better fuel mileage, which is major to me since I commute 90 miles a day. I keep going back and forth between the two and I really need to make a decision so I can get it ordered.

    Good review, You didn't discuss the auto stop-go which many don't like, but at least the driver can cancel it. Everytime the engine is turned on the system goes to default and the button to cancel it needs to be pressed. Also, the controls on the steering wheel appear to have features that if the driver isn't careful enough they can be inadvertently turned off. I ordered a Wikderness same exact color, not to do offroading with, it but for the rugged looks and extra cladding. Will hopefully arrive at the dealership in August. It's a good value, but for those buying now, the dealer maynot outwardly charge you over MSRP but may tag it under "Administrative fees". A deceptive manuever, but they need to make a profit. My "Administrative fee" is $ 350. Not happy. .

Was monitoring transmission temps all day on my scangauge and it got up to 197 degrees for just a moment during that 2100 foot climb, and then rather quickly dropped down to 185.
      I'm guessing there's a thermostat that prevents the cooler from being used until temps get around 200 degrees. But I shudder to think of what my previous '19 would get to... it's day to day city driving temps were 200+ degrees.

    I’ve been trying so hard to decide between the sport and wilderness.. I love the seat material and copper trim of the wilderness, but giving up the mpg is a hard pill to swallow, especially on the highway. The exterior styling is close in my opinion but I think the sport comes out on top. I also have deep desire for Subaru to offer the 2.4 turbo in the forester. My wife and I just traded her 2021 outback with the 2.5 for a 2022 ascent with the 2.4 turbo and it’s such a better more impressive engine..

    • @shelbyc7285
      @shelbyc7285 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was torn between the two, just saw them both this weekend and I prefer the wilderness by far. I didn't like the orange colors in the Sport in person, and the seats in the wilderness are so soft. I also love the outside of the wilderness more, just looks more rugged. Going to be ordering one soon.

    • @d.s.5807
      @d.s.5807 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really wanted the Sport because of the Orange but the Wilderness has Copper which looks just as good.
      What really sold me to go with the Wilderness is: Dual Climate Control ( I like it cold and wife loves it hot), Geyser Blue ( Only model with it so there won't be a ton of cars looking like ours and I think it looks the Best by a country mile), Speed and Power (Subaru modified the CVT so even though your getting the same engine the gearing makes the Wilderness go faster which is why you lose the fuel mileage), We live in Wisconsin so the extra cladding which we love the look of is also way more practical, 800 LBS can go on the roof rack and it hauls 3,000 lbs! We are at the age of adventure and if we want to Kayak, ride bikes, and camp on top of our car plus haul our Quads then no problemo!
      We did add the Harmon Kardone package, dimming lights, and hitch.
      We just ordered it so now we wait, probably until March or April of 2023 which we're ok with because that gives us 6 months to save payments and put it towards the car plus provides a baseline for how it will effect our budget.

    • @maxolguin4505
      @maxolguin4505 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also had that dilemma: Wilderness or Sport...I got the Wilderness in January, and it has not disappointed. The front view camera comes really handy when parking, specifically in my garage. I had concerns about the mpg, but just following the speed limit in the Houston metro area, I've been averaging 33 mpg (mostly city); once I got it to yield 36 mpg using 3/4 of the gas tank. I don't floor the gas pedal to get to the next stop light, and so forth.
      So far, I have put on it close to 7K miles and no issues whatsoever. Either way, you can't go wrong with the Sport or Wilderness. I just feel better equipped with the Wilderness (it has a full size spare tire, identical to the other four, including the wheel).

    My family has had Subarus for years. Even before they killed off the Forrester XT. They ruined it by programming fake gear shifts into the CVT. That change wiped out one of the only redeeming features of a CVT, the ability to remain at peak power indefinitely.
    My 82 year old mother doesn't care, because she has owned naturally aspirated Forresters for years.
    I will never iwn another Subaru, because they make nothing which interests me and show signs of wanting to create something which interests me.
    If FCA Chrysler puts a 6.4 Hemi in a RAM 1500 or even better, a Jeep Gladiator, by the time I retire in October 2023, I will keep my 2019 RAM 1500 Limited forever and buy a 2023 GR Corolla for a daily driver.
