Graham mentioned how these bellows-blown pipes can use dry air. But there's another very obvious advantage that was not mentioned: because your mouth is never used when playing, you could sing while playing at the same time! :))) I bet there are recordings of people doing this. I've managed to find some TH-cam videos of people using other bellows-blown bagpipes (doesn't have to specifically be the Uilleann pipes, because there are other forms of bagpipe that are bellows-blown) and they play while singing. The fact I could hear Graham talking while inflating the bag near the end of the video further proves this :).
OK, maybe I don't need to mention this, because it's just too obvious. Still, I felt like mentioning it :). Of course, you'd just have to have the mental capacity to be able to sing while playing; you have to use one arm to squeeze the bag and maintain the air pressure going to the pipes, while also using the other arm to squeeze the bellows to supply more air to the bag, plus fingering the notes on the chanter... that's a lot to be doing at once. A further complication is that the squeezing of the bellows rarely, if at all, happens in time or in rhythm to the music. Try adding singing or even talking to that... probably not that easy for everyone; that's pretty intense multitasking. So if you can successfully add singing to all of that, then I'd say you're a really great multitasker! The folks who do manage to add singing to that are impressive.
