Geophagus Sveni | Care Guide & Species Profile

- Today's video is a care guide and species profile on the Geophagus sveni. Geophagus sveni are beautiful cichlids with grey, red and blue colors that really stand out in a tank, and they are a South American cichlid. As with other Geophagus species, they are "earth eaters", meaning they sift through the sandy bottom of their environment looking for leftover food.
Due to their temperament, coloration, and behavior, they are compatible tank mates with some American cichlids. Tank mate options that will usually work well are Severums, Electric Blue Acaras, Angelfish, other Geophagus, and larger barbs or tetras.

The big guy sure does have a great setup👌🏻 some quality footage too! Your big dude has some brilliant color too👍🏻 Awesome fish
Thanks man, appreciate it!
I've never seen this strain of Geo's anywhere before, they look stunning!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the Sveni. I have a group of 10 in a 125 that I have grown out. It has been an incredibly awarding fish to keep. I really enjoy all of your content. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, Stephen! Sounds like a great tank
What size are your sveni now?
Thank you for the shout out Brother🙏🏻💪🏼
Your guys are looking amazing😍 They really are such rewarding Fish, so glad we can enjoy watching these beauties grow up🤩
Thanks again, Sean! 👊🏻👊🏻
😢3
Your guide is the best
Thanks!
Troy, you have some incredible fish, not the least of which the Sveni!
Thank you!
Love the Geo Sveni´s. as well, they are gorgeous! I finally found a group of 7 Geo Tapajos Red Top for my 150 gal tank and I am so happy, Geophagus are really beautiful fish and show very interesting behaviors and colors. I keep them with my Red hook and regular Silver Dollar group and they get along perfect, they even shoal together.
Sounds like a great setup 👏🏼
I'm getting some of these next week can't wait
Awesome, best of luck!
I have mine with blue acara and I agree they're great tankmates!
It’s a great combo!
Love your videos. Thanks for another idea for our tanks!
Love my sveni easily the most stunning geophagus
Awesome tank beautiful fish thanks for sharing you always give me some great video's to help me with tank to to hidden spots for my sevrums cichlids 👍👍
Awesome Troy. Just got 5 columbian tetras for the my 75 gallon South American cichlids tank. Next, the cichlids.
Beautiful 😍 should get my group of ten tommorow
Best of luck with yours
Love your vids guys
Thanks for watching!
Pretty good care guide. Thanks.
My Sveni grew a lot faster than my red head tapajos. I grew them to 8 inches in pH 8.2, very hard water which originally was a concern. You can see them on my channel.
Setting up a new 75 gallon, how topojas and sveni would you recommend?
If you're doing both, I'd recommend 2-3 of each
Are they good in community aquarium?
Geo Sveni is my current favorite fish, period.
It’s in my top 3. climbed the ranks fast!
I bought one today and I put in it with my severums,2 hours later it was dead, the severums killed,I don't know what I did wrong.
Are you using the african cichlid sand in your geo tank?
Many thumbs up to Geos !
👍🏻👍🏻
Great video
How low you keep nitrates for the Sveni?
Looks like they're a smaller species. Very cool!
Takes awhile to get big. They’re 8 inches maybe 9 now
I wonna start up a 99g tank with sveni. What would you recomend? Population group count of sveni and posible mix?
amazing geo
Thanks and very informative. I notice you have white and black sand mixed. Do you see any issues with having 100% black sand for Albino Threadfin Acaras?
Thank for good info
Good specie's
Hi! Thanks for the video. Would it be possible to keep a pair in a 55 gallon tank? Thanks!
Yep, should be fine for a breeding pair with no other tank mates
have a 75 gallon . how many would you recommend / not to be over stock
I love these geophagus! What size will your upgraded tank be?
Thank you! More to come on that soon
5 geo sveni in a 4ft tank (4 by 2 by 2.5 feet) i dont know gallons with 6 severums or is that overstocking?
How long did you have your geo’s be in the 75 gal?
About a year
I have a geophagus surinamensis and looks pretty similar, are they the same species?
What type of Svenis are they? I have the Rio Parana i know there is a rio aruguia not sure on differences
Do you think they would go well with german blue ram?
Might be tough since rams like higher temps
Do synadontis catfish do well with Sveni Geophagus?
Yep, they’d do fine together
Hello !!! (I'm a french si excuse me for m'y english 😅)
I have a tank of (240L\53 gallons)
I only have Cardinals Tetra (19) in my tank and a lot of dragon stone (i also have plants like:
-Pogostemon helferi,
-Limnophila
-and Java mousse )
I want to have a lovely peaceful school of colored fish to complete my tank
Do you have any idea about cichlides i can put in ?
Thanks you for your answer 🙏👍
Not chiclids but roseline sharks and blue rams are very nice fish I've kept 2gther with tetras b4
@@gusc6785 thanks 👍🙏
What size group for a 4 foot 75 gallon aquarium?
3-5 long term
Hey Troy...have recently set up a 75 gal. So far have some electric blue acara and tetras in there. My plan was to add Geo Tapajos, either solo or 2. Can't find the Tapajos locally, LFS' s all telling me they been having trouble getting them lately. However one LFS has the Sveni. Which do you prefer and will the Sveni get quite a bit bigger? Trying to decide if I wait it out for Tapajos or go Sveni. Thanks.
The sveni will get slightly bigger but a small group should be okay in a 75. I might like the sveni most out of all geos!
Hi! what kind of substrate did you have them in? It looks like african cichlid substrate. Interested in doing the same, just worried about the ph levels
Originally I had them with the African cichlid mix. It doesn’t raise ph too much. I did upgrade their tank though and they are now on white sand
So, I have a 90g, would I be able some to put Geo. Sveni and Tapajo together in same tank? Along with Severums and Acaras.
Depends on how many of each, but if the numbers aren't too high, it should be fine
Do you think that if sveni or tapajos were in a group of 5-6, they could be in a community tank with more aggressive cichlids such as a Jack Dempsey, Green Terror/ Gold Saum, Oscar, Jaguar cichlid or maybe a Texas cichlid? For reference this would be at a minimum a 180 gallon, however most likely something like a 265.
It could possibly work in a tank that size. Chances would be best if the sveni were larger to start, since they’re slow growers. I’d have a back up plan though considering a few of those could get too aggressive
@@CichlidBros What are your thoughts on a Jaguar/ vieja in that setting? I love the idea of one of the two being the centerpiece of a large tank. However from what I understand, they are both quite aggressive and unpredictable cichlids. Maybe possibly a female in the hopes aggression is lower…. Or getting 5 dithering fish like bala/ silver dollar to take attention away…
How many could I put in a 55g? And between the Red Head Topos which get bigger? Thanks!
I wouldn’t recommend more than one or a pair. Best in a 75+ long term
is it safe to mix them with bolivian ram (Mikrogeophagus Altispinosa) ?
Yep, should be fine
How many sveni can you keep in a 75?
4-5, if the rest of the stocking in the tank is light
Hey Troy. Need some help. Petco currently has a pair of fish labeled earth eaters but they don’t know which ones they are. They’re only an inch. And I just can’t quite tel which ones they are but it’s just two left. Anyway to know when super little like that ?
It might be hard to tell if they are very small. Feel free to DM us a pic on Instagram or email a pic, and we'd be happy to help
@@CichlidBros I have an email forgive me I don’t have anything but an email. But definitely would email some pics to ya I really want them but there’s only 2 would the 2 be ok even if it’s just the 2
@@CichlidBros based off google snap view it’s sveni unfortunately id never have room to fit a tank big enough for even just one but thanks anyways.
Is there somewhere online you can buy these fish? Or would you not recommend buying fish online?
I got all of mine online. Imperial tropicals or tangled up in cichlids are great options
@@CichlidBros Thank you for the response!
I currently have 3 in a 75g...find them to be extremely aggressive with each other...Is it best to have more than 3? Also have 2 Electric Blue acara and a threadfin in same tank...They are all juniors around 3"
Yeah, I usually recommend either keeping 1, 2, or 5+. Avoids one being the odd man out and fighting the others
@@CichlidBros Thanks yeah I am going to add 2 more. Any recs on where to buy online. I usually order from Imperial Tropicals, but they are out at the moment.
Tangled up in cichlids or Global fish co
@@CichlidBros Thanks again, will check them out
@@CichlidBros So I ended up getting 2 more but they are on the smaller side around 2 inches. Have had them in another tank hoping they would add some more size. Should I wait for more size before I mix with the 3 4inch ones I currently have? Also in the tank are a couple of 3" electric blue acara.
Nice fishes
I am using aqua soil, is it okay"¿
They might stir it up some, but should be fine
I have a 60 gallon but I want one soooooo bad waahhhh 😔😭😭
set up a 125 with 7 sveni
Very nice!
Can you keep these with Oscar’s please ?
Same question here ...
It would probably work if the geos were large to start, and with a big tank
DamTroy you need to change your name to the Taliban Cichlid Bros
This fish is highly INVASIVE in several reservoirs located in southeastern Brazil!!!!
