Something I failed to mention - It took me 1 Hour to create the Expensive side, while it took me over 2 hours to complete the Cheap side. Are you surprised by that?
The only good thing about those felt pens is that you can use the ink as watercolor. When I was little I’d break them on purpose and make a mess with them doing hand paintings and such. 😂 Now I’m tempted to get them again to make water color inks.
some things I learned about cheap felt tip pens: you can use them on a mixing palette with water to create something akin to watercolor. And you can even mix different colors together to create skin tones. And of course, using the watered down ink with a brush doesn't damage the paper as much as the felt tip directly. And some bristol papers or even paper with hemp can work a bit better with them. Still no reason to buy better products if given the choice, but still usable if someone has them around the house and doesn't want to throw them away or just wants to color some sketches or thumbnails. Every supply has potential, even the one on the bottom of the barrel
I love your work and art, great challenge!! I'm really surprised at how well the cheap side looks, I half expected the paper to be ripped to shreds by the end 😂 Just a word of warning for anyone using a lightpad - make sure you have your papers the correct way round and don't draw directly over top of your sketch - not coming from experience at all :D
I gotta admit I miss the longer videos. My daughter and I love watching you work. She’s 3 and in this particular video she said “His art is so beautiful! I want to hang it on my wall.” Which is the highest compliment I’ve ever heard her give. ❤
Looks awesome, really worth the upgrade for more control and variety. Not surprised the cheap ones took longer. Harder to figure out how to approach the drawing with such a limited pallet to choose from. Keep up the awesome drawing and videos. Really relaxing and easy to learn from you😃😃
But....But there was already a movie in the 80s! Can't completely discount Bob Hoskins Mario! Also great job with those felts, I heard and felt the coloring through the screen.
This was the most stark comparison I've seen yet. I came across a younger artist the other day who didn't know about alcohol markers. He was using markers like the cheap in this video. He didn't know his life was gonna change as I simp for alcohol markers.
I had some other cheap felt tip pens in a bucket as a kid, and they were actually good. They had one light skin tone in it, and some of them lasted years. But the ones with those exact caps used here, you were lucky when they weren't dried up when you bought them.
I've Missed this Segment a Lot and I gotta say, this one is more worthy to choose wisely.. But I've Choose the Expensive side, due to the texture and Smooth Blending.. More of this and Please make a 10 Style Swap again. From: Philippines
Watercolor markers I love is the tombow, I don't only use them as a marker, but also colour down on a plastic lid and use it with a brush and water🤩 108 different colors (I have only a few times missed some colours, but usually I can then blend two together on a plastic lid, or colour one above the other on paper)🥰 Maybe you can try those??😊
There are some things you said that made me go "Hol up" like.. Mario has been your favourite game?... Which one? They finally make a movie? There are actually 2 mario movies that had been made already.. And the one life action film is quite notorious to say the least. (Even tho I rewatched the Super Mario Movie with a friend not to long ago (Some fan cut edition with added deleted scenes) and I gotta say.. I kinda think the movie was really good.. Or at least one of the most enjoyable things ive seen over the year)
Admittedly, it is isn’t one Euro a marker, but you can get the 48 Brushmarker set for $100 in the US. The 120 Ohuhu set for the same $100 (I actually got the 72 set and 48 pastel set for $76 a while ago). And 36 Copic Sketch for $100 (I got the 72 marker Ciao set for $135, but it’s gonna drag getting here from Japan). So, yeah, you can find good deals on all sorts of good alcohol markers.
The fact that, you were able to actually make are with the felt pens is mind blowing to me and is a testament to your art skill. I know you don’t see yourself as the best artist. But my mind was blown by what you did with the felt pens.
The use of cross hatching to add shading also creates detail and you can tell it takes time to make compared to the right side that looks more smooth like a computer graphic. The cross hatching also makes Mario look more rugged, perhaps like he's lived a harder life with all those gumbas and fireballs he has to deal with on a regular basis.
I almost bought that box set around blackfriday. Not the cheapest set. Instead of buying the box, just went and got 12 additions to ones I allready had. Money well saved?? Also so happy for you to make this comparison. Almost makes me want to make a comparison with those and felt markers we have for kids at work. Doub my art would look as good as urs though 🤣🤣🤣
The inexpensive side has drawing/sketchy side to them. Shows more of the artists hand. Alla the impressionists, which is something that i really like. the other side is simply awesome
A while ago I got my 9 year old a set of Ohuhu water based markers, which she loves, mainly because I didn't want her having alcohol based markers. It would be fascinating to see a direct comparison between the two. Also, I loved this video! I always hated felt tips so I think you were being ENTIRELY fair. So hard to use.
I don't want to sound harsh here... but I struggle to see the point of the comparison here. I mean, did *anyone* expect an even semi-decent result from the felt-pens? They're horrible. Anyone who has ever used some knows this. And call it "spending a bit more" for the quality markers, if you want, but there's no comparing the price... Usually you havd at least a few redeeming highlights for the cheap supplies, but there's nothing here. It doesn't even sell as a challenge. Don't get me wrong. I still liked the video (your personality is what sells it) - and I do like your Mario drawing! The actual markers look really good ( no surprise there, you're highly skilled), and I loved seing you colour in with them.
having all the Winsor Newton both pro and brush markers from the year 2019 yea I dont regret that 1000€+ purchase ever ^^ thx Adc for a yet a great video ^^
Interesting video, foremost part the felt marker side did resemble the coloring platform of those of us growing up in 70' & 80's lol. I do agree with your opinion that the alcohol markers do much better with blending and color saturation...feel if ppl are serious about their art maybe should invest in little more pricy products. Anyways gr8 video & review as always, keep the videos coming!!! Til next tyme...keep those cre8ive juices abrewing!!!
AMAZING!!! I love super Mario he was my childhood game since, 5 I love that you drew him, and you should try crayola super tips their amazing for cheap markers
I also heard that some people use the Crayola super tip markers as watercolours due to having water based ink. It is a creative way to use the pens, I recommend checking those out.
YES!!! YOU DID A SUPER MARIO DRAWING! 😍😍 (not that I'm against any of your other videos, just admitting a little excitement from my childhood here) I remember those cheap felt tips as a kid, hated them then, too 😂 since discovering your channel, I've treated myself to some nice pens. It's genuinely got me back into drawing which I spent most of my childhood doing. Love what you do, keep your videos coming, dude!! 🙌
I love your Mario drawing. I definitely would go with the alcohol markers. The felt markers did so much damage to the paper. Looking forward to seeing your next video.
I know it doesn't matter for just colouring, but I would like to know if cheaper water based markers keep their colour longer than alcohol markers, as these last are known to fade quickly, even when used in books.
It always amazes me what u can do with awful art supplies. You're so talented! 💜 I'd love to see you review Crayolas colors of the world markers. I just got the 36 set and I was really surprised on crayola stepping it up. Pls review them? Take care. Love from Kentucky! 🤗
I think the felt tip ones are better in my opinion. They look way more pigmented and despite the crumbs and lack of ink flow they go for a more Picasso look in your art. The other markers are more watery looking but would work well with realism portraits
Why not recommend a decent middle ground between the Poundland felt tips and Pro Markers... Where I live the pens can range between £1.50 to £3 depending on sales and the quantity of pens in the pack. (Larger bundles tend to world out cheaper) but I was able to find a pretty nice set of 60 brush tip markers for £25.
Mario! I love Mario My favorite Mario game is Mario Kart Wii Because of it's broken physics, me mechanics, glitches and more! "Mario! It's a me, Mario. But where's my circuit?"
We once bought those exact felt tip markers for our daughter. Intently regretting it. The crayola super tips and ikea mala felt tip pens are better. I don’t feel ready to buy my 6 y/o alcoholmakers 😅
I wonder if you could try a different style with the felt tip pens, more like how you did the finger shading on the glove? They're clearly not suited for fully filling in a large area
It's ridiculous how well you made the brim of the hat look compared to what I was expecting (first time at 3:50). My favorite part of the cheap vs expensive videos is almost always the first shot of something being at-least-mostly-done after having almost no expectations.
Have you ever considered scanning your line drawings and putting them up online so you can see what others can do with them? Either free, paid, or patreon or something like that? I see some of yours and would love to give them a try! On a side note, I found some alcohol makers at a warehouse store the other day that were $0.33/marker ($10 for 30)! I picked them up to try them out since I've wanted to after watching your videos. Not a great color selection, but it got me into alcohol markers and I love them! If you wanted to try them out for another cheap vs expensive lemme know!

Yes I am surprised
Wow! You are so dedicated and I loved your art work!
Anthony. I'm amazed at the cheap side so far. And recently I did a full artwork of your DBZ Mario! Loving the video. I hope you're well. 😁👍
👍🏻 nice
I love the expensive side! I loved the video.
Those felt pens made me CRINGE when they were being used and made me remember how much I HATE them! Alcohol markers win this one by far.
Omg me too!!! Brought back some PAINFUL childhood memories! Lol

The felt markers made Mario look like he was either on an og videogame cover, or trapped in a painting in Luigis Mansion
Your colouring skills are crazy. I got okay with colour but reverted back to pencil sketching and ballpoint pens with hatch shading.
I actually weirdly love the cheap side 😮
Glad I am not the only one.

The expensive is well worth it! Alcohol markers taught me that markers do not suck and they are actual great material to use for art.
Felt-tip pens side still looks pretty nice=) You've managed to do so much with them. Professional and talented artist=)Thank you for the video=3

Oh felt tip pens, nightmare of my childhood. As a kid I always thought it was lack of my abilities, but no, that's the way these are.
The expensive is very good because it is look like in the movie
When he was coloring with the felt pens, it made me VERY uncomfortable like Mario had kind of like pink skin. The alcohol colors are WAY better.
