    Mopar Performance used to sell a kit through the dealerships to convert these G-Bodies to small-block LA (318/340/360, etc) power... it's the way that Chrysler should have built them in the first place to fight the 5.0 Mustang and IROC-Z competition.

      That's the first thing I thought of, was that car from that movie when I saw one of these back when I was a kid back in 1992. Should have been rear-wheel-drive at the bare minimum at least should have had like a tiny V8 like something from they're 2.2 or 2.4 L turbo series engines, at least it would have that sound or maybe even that engine they were using out of the duster, the 305. With barely 3000 lb to move you're not going to need more than maybe 200 horsepower to make this thing scoot.

    Cool car! My brother had an '87 Daytona that'd been modified...I think it was a Shelby model to start with but it'd had the head redone and a different turbo....about 224 hp I think it dyno'd. It was a little beast. Dodge had the unequal length half shafts so one would wind up more than the other and try to torque steer you into the weeds. I drove it a few times and it was really fast. Just like my buddy's GLHS Omni was...you could spin the front tires up to about 45-50mph. My brother wrapped the Daytona around a tree. This one would be a complete monster. I'd like to build one! I'm working on putting a Redeye into a '70 Charger.... Cool video dudes!

    I built an 85' Daytona turbo Z out of a bunch of old worn-out rusty Daytonas and Lasers (about 5 total) that I collected back in the mid 90's, and it's original 2.2 turbo was no slouch by any means. But what I really wanted to do with it was to convert it to RWD and then do a 360 magnum twin turbo V8 swap with a 727. A "727", so that there's no down time in between gear shifts for the turbos to "un"-spool.
    But ya know, life happens....

    Always liked these cars, and I always thought they should have come with a V8 instead of a front-wheel drive like the k-series chassis had. If I ever build something like this, I'll go V8 but I'm probably going to go something a little bit smaller. 500 horsepower is a bit much. This is what these cars should of had from the factory. V-8 rear wheel drive. There'd be more of them still running around if they did.

    The unfortunate problem with putting a longitudinal engine and transmission into a front wheel drive car is that the engine is mounted forward of the front wheels which teeter totters the weight off of the rear wheels. The only way to get it to hook up would be to tub it out with big monster slicks. It is a much overlooked fact that rear wheel drive cars are actually mid-engined...just a front-mid as opposed to a rear-mid.
    But its still a fun project and cool, clean setup.

    • @paulstandaert5709
      @paulstandaert5709 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I will challenge you to study stuff under the hood of rear wheel drive cars. Note the relation of the strut towers to the engine position. Note the overhang of the front facia of a front drive car to a rear wheel drive car. You can use google images to do all of this and you *will* notice a pattern. Then, any of us who played on a teeter totter on the playground as a kid should be able to understand the physics involved. Post a link here to an image of an originally rear wheel drive car where the strut towers are not much more forward of the bulk of the engine. Unless the car has something stupid like 60 degrees of caster, what I say about the engine position relative to the front wheels is true.

    • @paulstandaert5709
      @paulstandaert5709 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look, and find proof of me being wrong as opposed to just assuming about something you never paid attention to before. A crown vic, lexus gs, mustang, BMW, Charger/challenger, rear drive based Jeeps, etc. They all have much steeper approach angles with the front wheels moved farther forward relative to the engine position.

    • @ZackandWyatt
      @ZackandWyatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of nope, for a car to be “mid engined” the engine has to be 100% between the wheels. Corvettes, S2000s, some Mercedes, and a hand full of other cars are front mid engined. You flat out said “it is a much overlooked fact that rear wheel drive cars are actually mid-engined..” Thats the statement I was the mind numbingly stupid one.

    • @ZackandWyatt
      @ZackandWyatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now, as to the engine of this car being too far forward because it used to be FWD. Nope. The engine is in a pretty good place for such a huge engine to fit in a relatively small engine bay. It is definitely not 100% hanging off of the front axel, and it has enough weight in the rear. The problem is OVER 500 HP and 225 tires in a lightweight car.....

    They would have had to have been on another platform, as they were K-car based. But yeah, they would have been total badasses if Iacocca came up with a rear wheel drive idea for them.
