Hi midpackrider! I just wanted to ask what you meant by dipping the frame. Is it a proccess for removing paint or like adding a certain finish to it?
@@NeronAzemi Eyup! Yes it was an alloy wheel refurbishment shop I went to and they dipped the frame to strip all the paint off, very quick and easy process to save loads of time scraping the paint off myself
The best upgrade on my hardtail was installing the PNW Coast dropper. It is the ONLY dropper with 40mm of air suspension. It saved my lower back.

Pro tip: Always end at the valve when installing a tire, and start at the valve when removing. That way the tire bead doesn't get hung on the valve making it too tight and can rest in the rim's center channel where it belongs.

i do the opposite, works for me just fine.
@@midpackrider I work from the valve as well when installing a new tyre but I also make sure that I have a small bucket with warm soapy water and a paint brush handy just to ease the whole process.
Push the valve out of the rim very slightly and up into the tyre, this will allow the tyre bead to set in the channel.
Jesus I'm still in the 90s. Modern bikes are great. That's a tremendous finish BTW.
Re building a bike is easy peazy. Just takes a lot of time and effort, and a lot of love. But when you put that baby all together she is special!

@@midpackrider I built up an old steel konna. Weeks off polishing it bac ..to the steel. Top tip. When you have done all the polishing, wipe down with degrees. Even finger print will destroy your paint work. Then two coats at least of under coat before you start to spry then lightly spry your couler twice. If it looks really good you can give it several coats of clear gloss.
Now you see this is a labrator of love ❤
@@midpackrider two days off rubbin down (don't forget the corners) make sure you wipe with surgical spirit ,or the like. Finger print will stop paint sticking. 3 under coat, two colour. 3 clear top coat.

Cheers man! The forks are for plus size 27.5 wheels which are essentially a wider tyre but they work for 29er clearance very well, never had an issue and bike still going.. thanks 👍🏻

Your bike is really badass...I run a very similar setup. Even run a 29 up front and 26 in rear...I ran it like yours but the added turn in quickness has me sold on the 69er.

My all time fav bike was a schwinn Cimmaron MTB .
No rear OR front , suspension . chrome Moly frame , rim brakes , crappy wheels , etc, but fun as hell . the only upgrade i made to the bike was specialized Ground Control tires which were radical at the time . i never worried when i crashed it because it was bomb proof .

It came out very nice looking indeed, a really pleasant revival of a previously dull looking Mtb bike 🚲.I'm a downhiller from the heart,I got both a 💯% DH bike and a dirt jump/hard tail bike. I've been riding on the dirt jump bike pretty much on a daily basis here in Portugal at the moment, even going down DH trails with it.The frame is from a Dutch brand called B1 and I also built it from the ground up.I just went through the hassle of recently ordering a few multi-colored titanium bolts in order not to see rusty screws ever again 🙂.It's a polished aluminum stock finish frame and it's been doing a good job for all this long, I've been jumping all sorts of jumps in urban areas and on trails for more than 10 years so I've been keeping a close eye on the frame's welds 👀 too just in case and so far so good👌🏻. I got both a 100mm Marzocchi DJ2 and a 140mm Pike 409 cuz it's great to have a spare fork for when I need to get either one serviced, that way I can keep on riding. They've been discontinued but I got a pair of white Avid Elixr1 which still work great. Also this hardtaill has a single speed set up with a light c⚙️g ratio that allows me to pedal all the uphill roads I come across in the area where I live while it also allows me to save some weight while having no worries when it comes to causing damage to the derrailleur.All this to say that I've been finding that hardtails are pretty capable as long as they are properly reinforced like most dirt jump bikes are.HT's are also lighter thus becoming more agile on trails (even more when it's a 26' wheel bike like mine) you just got to have strong key parts like the wheels,cranks,stem and bars,a good physical condition along with some previously acquired DH skills,good brakes and proper tires always help in every kind of terrain and you should be more than fine.Wish you fun moments with your revived and revised hardtail there from a fellow biker all the way from PortugaL🇵🇹 👍🏻🙋🏻♂️.

I bought a GT Avalanche Sport for $400. Guy had made it a 1x and had tapered headtube. Replaced the fork, stem, bars, cranks, grips (same grips, just different color to give a predominantly black bike some more color and match the trim/pedals), pedals, wheels and tires. In it now for $1k and it's got better components than if I bought a bike for $1k.
It's definitely a much better bike. Eventually I'll probably throw a 130mm fork, MAYBE 140mm. Add a dropper and I'll be all set. As is, it's fun to throw around a bit and now exceeds my beginner skills. 😉

Recently bought a Carrera Sulcata 3.1 it was £575 I plan on putting a rockshox yari on it, maxxis minion dhf and dhr tan wall tires, hunt 30mm trail wide rims, and make them tubeless to make it somewhat trail worthy.

The bike turned out looking great. I love the raw look. The parts and new stickers made it look good too.
The smaller rear wheel probably makes the bike ride better, as its lower, and hea dangle slacker, jus tmove saddle forward and up a bit, and along iwth new cockpit you installed it should be quite nice i think.
The Dt Swiss 511 were probably a good choice.
My concerns:
The brakes, i has similar brakes if not the same, I had m396 the threads for bolt securing the cover failed so bolt came loose, and it leaked it was barely used. Also piston seals leaked, but so did the Deore m615 but that was in 8 months, 3 sets, the i got Deore m6000, all 4 sets leaked everywhere. But those have absurd lever mechanism Design as they have servoeave but no adjustment to counteract the weakening of power if you don't have the levers all the way out, but your brakes don't have that issue, so max power no matter the reach. Wears they still make these type flawed brakes, I am not a fan of plastic cover. But atleast kids and adults can use them.
Crank, I've seen those fail at threads for pedals, so pedals fall off.

Great video and unique bike. Aren’t you afraid of corrosion? And i believe you should first screw the crank with the plastic nob before fastening the 2 screws on the crank itself, right?
thanks, bike is running now and great to ride, Aliminium does not corrode as such but I use wd40 to rub it down after a wash to keep the shine. Didn’t realise I’d done crank bolts wrong way, first time Iv don’t this 👍🏻
I’ve mangled a crank in the past by incorrect installation. There was play and i noticed too late and as result the splines were worn. Lesson learned the hard way 😇
@@MB-ek1ub I forgot to put the black plastic cap on and ended up having my cranks repeatedly come loose and even had them fall out on one side mid ride. I kept on tightening and couldn't work out why. Then I realised the black cap was missing. Forgot to put it on when I refurbished the cranks. Bought a smart, new alloy one and its been no problem since 👍It just shows how a flimsy plastic part is so important, and can disable the bike
Looks sick, I'd be kinda scared to change the geometry though by going 29 in the front and why did you put the spacers over the stem opposed to under it? Still a sick build, congrats!

Slackening the head angle has made the bike more aggressive to help with steep downhill, the spacers above or below the head set were to try to try the bars at different heights until I was happy then trimmed down the forks, thanks man 🤘🏼
1:44 I did this once with a little bmx bike. It's worse than doing a 4000 pieces puzzle, I guess :). It's that kind of task that looks good and satisfactory in a clip, but it's not. Leave it to the pros or use some proper tools. I've heard sand blasting is the way to go

Did you put clear coat on the frame or anything? If so does normal clear coat works on raw alloy frame?
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
The frame is a medium, the geo if you require info would be a trek Roscoe 7 2018 if you need to search it

Beware that hair spray might make the bike stink for a long time. Depend son the spray, some stink. Also don't dry out fast. I just used hot water, pushed grips on, compressed the then pushed them, works on foam grips but should work on rubber grips too, but I am not a fan of grips like this, I prefer lockob grips. Super easy to install and remove.
Also the plastic bar end plugs are not a good choice. Get proper bar end plugs that can take a beating, so needs to be metal. There are plenty of good choices. Some grips come with them too. I used Hope Grip Doctor, but they are quite thick, I think its about 5mm for each plug giving you 1cm wider bike i use Revgrip now the thad flat style bar end plugs included. But custom brands exist too i forgot the name of those.

Could someone help me out how much space dose a 26inch frame need between the axle and the bottom bracket to fit a 27.5 wheel ..? New to custom mtb’ing 😅 I think I’ve got 31inch wheel gap will that be enough ?
Eyup Michael, if you mean the front wheel, the best way I found was to try a wheel in my forks to see what clearance I had, do you have a mate who has one you can try?

You didnt isntall properly your left crank arm and so the bb bearings may get loosely.

Eyup! No I just had it dipped and polished the Ali frame, still looks good, I wasn’t bothered about scratches as it’s a rough and ready hardtail now but just a rub down and polish would bring it back up instantly

Are the old pieces that you swapped out available for purchasing? I ride bikes since i was 11 and now i am 15,i am italian and i mainly wheelie with my bike but my fork is broken, i have V type brakes that are not working properly, my rear tire is very consumed and my handlebar is cheap and very small, my gears are working but i would like to purchase a lever gear because my shimano tourney is old and rusty, i also neel a new brake lever because mine is loose and cheap. My stem is not the best but i am okay with it. The main problems are brakes, back wheel and fork.😂

Curious why the plus sized tires are no good? I ride a plus sized tire bike as well as a full suspension with 2.3's, and always felt the plus sized is nice for the cushion on a hardtail. Just slower maybe? Very cool build!
Eyup! The tracks I rode it on felt a lot different than other bikes Iv had and based it on that tbh.. I’m sure plus have there place and a matter of preference, maybe but seems to skate over the mud in winter. Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it

Lucky to have the lads I ride with mate, for sure. But the ideas to create something decent out of the old bike still would be loads cheaper than a new one of this standard
