Why Study the Pre-Nicene Christian Writings

  • Why should today's Christians study the writings of the Christians from the Pre-Nicene period (AD 75-325)?
    If you would like to subscribe to this channel via email, send your request to postapostolicchurch@gmail.com.
    Quotations from ancient writings might be paraphrased because many of them were translated in the 1800s. I have done my best to keep this to a bare minimum.

    I am 59 years old and for the 1st time in nearly 40 years I am finally so overwhelmingly hungry to study what took place after the apostles went to heaven. Now I can finally discover exactly how living simply in my faith based on the truth really benefits my life and how it will allow me to share truth with the common man. I spent an entire generation deeply steeped in the Southern Baptist ways and the starch has slowly been washed out out of my mind and heart but not without great pain and suffering. Not only am I born again but my mind is being transformed and it feels wonderful to finally understand the truth of God's word the way it was originally intended. I will indeed continue to watch for all of your videos so God-bless you and keep up this good work for truth!

      @@1963wheelerTouched by your testimony. I am from Southern India where the legend is that St Thomas the Apostle came here to evangelize the Jews who were already living here as a part of the diaspora. He established 7 churches here by converting the high class hindu Brahmin families etc etc. In the 7 & 8th centuries Syrian orthodox bishops came here and the church grew bigger . No gospel !only Syriac chanting and Mary worship . that was the Christianity here. I believe the Thomas legend is the gnostic Thomas who is supposed to have come to India. First time the christians here who were under the Syrian orthodox patriarchate heard the Gospel was when British missionaries came here and translated Bible into local language. There was a reformation after understanding the Gospel . The reformed faction is known as Mar thoma Church after the name st Thomas. Not long after a methodist missionary came Dr E. Stanley Jones. He spoke in our annual convention for 50 years continuously. He integrated hinduism into our church . The leaders have become hindus . Evangelism is suppressed. Church is become Ecumenical. A slow take over by the enemy. Thousands of people left . Wherever there is true Church satan sends his envoy and destroys it.

      @@vindicatednews9169 Christ did say "when you fast" not "if you fast" and Paul spoke as if he assumed everyone he spoke with in the church had been baptized. The Didache does allow for pouring if need be and baptism is probably the easiest of all commands we were given so I can't imagine why people wouldn't do it.
      The Didache isn't scripture, but it does show what very early Christians seemed to believe. Since I already felt the Bible was pretty strong on baptism I have no issue with seeing that it was considered essential. Jesus said "why do you call me Lord but do not do what I commanded?"
      I get what you mean though. I've never fasted and the idea is hard for me because I eat a lot. But I'm taking that as a sign that I need to fast. I wish to be ruled only by Christ.

      @Read Father Seraphim Rose I do read John Chrysostom and I appreciate his profound commentaries. He is in tune with Pre-Nicene beliefs. However, I do not subscribe to Post-Nicene "new" doctrines which the Pre-Nicene fathers were explicitly and adamantly against, e.g., icons, images and prayers with the dead or for the dead, veneration of theotokos, etc. Hence, I am very Ante-Nicene and primarily Wesleyan. But I do believe we have true brothers in these other denominations.

    • @crossculturecommunity6593
      @crossculturecommunity6593 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Read Father Seraphim Rose Thank you Father Rose, I have the complete set by Philip Schaff of the ante-Nicene, Nicen and post-Nicen Fathers. I do get material from John Chrysostom. However, I aim to digest the ante-Nicene writings first before I get into the others. I know Wesleyans read the Cappadocian "fathers" but, like I said, pre-Nicene first. The more famous ante-Nicene bishops did quite clearly condemn images and icons for whatever reason. 2 Esdras 7 of the Clemetine Apocrypha seems to confirm Luke 16 where the rich man in Hades could not talk with Lazarus in paradise, neither can anyone living talk to departed believers.

    • @crossculturecommunity6593
      @crossculturecommunity6593 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Read Father Seraphim Rose I agree with you mostly. However, it is more logical for me to think that post-Nicene teachings are the ones that contain distortions of the "original" ante- Nicene Apostolic teachings, not the other way around. I would put more weight on the generations close to the Apostles teaching rather than centuries after introducing the distortions of time. language and context to the interpretations and succeeding doctrinal "inventions"

      I would contend that that scriptures were compiled and authorized by the Apostles, specifically Peter before the death of the Apostles.. They alone were ordained by Jesus and under the Spirits inspiration while they were alive. No other generation of Church Fathers had that personal witness, of Christ and His Resurrection, and the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit reminding them of what they saw and learned.
      God did use the Church to preserve the scriptures but it is not the post Apostolic Church that had the authority to declare what was New Testament scripture and what wasn’t.

    I just found your channel, and I'm very excited to learn the scriptures more deeply from learning about what the early Christians understood.
    I don't want to appear as though I am "majoring on minors", but I am a stickler for not asserting unproven claims as true (or untrue), just because they SOUND reasonable, or because "they are likely to be true". One example is when people state that none of the original writings by Paul, Peter, or any other New Testament writers exist today. That might be true, and it might not. We don't know, as there are literally thousands of extant manuscripts and partials. It would be more reasonable to state that "it is unlikely that any of the original writings remain". Although this particular claim doesn't have any risky applications, the principle itself is a good one to follow to keep one from making more risky errors.
    Thanks again for this labor you've undertaken. It is a great blessing for those of us who want a greater understanding of God's word!

      Blaise, thank you for commenting. I agree. Since making this channel, it is surprising how many Christians are teaching that observing the Sabbath is required. Perhaps making a video on what the early Christians believed about the Sabbath is more important than I originally thought. It still may be a while before that video is released, but it is certainly in the works... eventually. God bless!

      Don't you think it is quite clear what the scripture teaches on that?
      For example start by reading what the apostles said was the ONLY laws required by non Jews to follow.
      Then look at the patterns laid down by Paul and the apostles in all the letters.
      Then notice that in every occasion they gathered on the first day of the week to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
      Also note how the book of Hebrews demonstrates that the Sabbath like many other old testament feasts were there to point us to Christ.

    • @Blessed_by_Yeshua
      @Blessed_by_Yeshua 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Sabbath is something Jesus/Yeshua adhered to-traditionally passed down from the Beginning. A day of rest, and a day to reflect on the phenomenal works of our Creator, YHWH. I like that you see the first day of the week as Resurrection Day, and a celebration thereof.
      I believe many Christians whose eyes are beginning to really open don’t want to celebrate “Sunday” as the day of dedication to and worship of our Father since Constantine was a pagan and Constantine gave early Christians one day to worship and he wanted the day they worshipped to be when they (the pagans) worshipped their sun god.
      I can see how Christians don’t want to worship on Sun(god)day.
      But when put in proper context, it would be better if we didn’t call it Sunday worship, but Resurrection Day worship.

      Constantine introduced no ideas. He grew up separated from his Christian mother. She was perfectly orthodox and had been held under years of house arrest for JESUS. When Constantine freed Christians of the Roman empire from legalized persecution, he was informed of things of which he was ignorant in part by his own mother. All those Bishops at the Council of Nicea merely confirmed all that they had always previously suffered to preserve.
      Paphnutios the Bishop of the Upper Thebaid of Upper Egypt had an eye missing from the great persecution. Many Bishops were mamed. A Bishop of Armenia had had all sorts of appendages removed from his face and body, and Constantine wept to see him. These weren't compromisers. Most today are inferior to those at the Nicene Council.

    Overall, good video IMHO. Highly recommend reading a super early writing that came to be titled "The Didache" for more insights into the Early Church.
    14:00 um, just to clarify, there had already been a church council before Nicea. The Council of Jerusalem, recorded in scripture--included the topic of circumcision for gentiles. See Acts 15 and Gal 2
    The term "catholic" was first recorded around 80 AD (secular writings, if memory serves). Later it was capitalized as the official title of the religion. The first titles for Jesus's followers included names like: Nazareans and Followers of The Way. At first it was (mis)understood that Christians were just another sect of Judaism.
    The first internal division was Judas--whom Jesus personally chose, probably in part to show the weeds would always be in with the wheat. Deal with it. Then came the sheep who were lead astray to form non-Christian sects (Gnostics, Pelagians, etc.).
    These sects, of course, like modern-day "Christianesque" sects of JWs and LDS, self- identified as true Christians.
    Unfortunately the persecutions and turmoil during those first 300 years made calling an ecumenical (worldwide) council "problematic."
    The creedal councils of the early church were convened to clearly draw out the beliefs neccesary to be called a Christian. Us vs. Them, if you will. The confusion being wreaked within The Church by these heretical sects was awful--at the time Arius was sewing heresy that was spreading like wildfire (not unlike the Prosperity Gospel nowadays).
    16:53 It is not enough to simply read the scriptures and live them out simply. That is evident by appearance of tens of thousands of Christian denominations in the world today. The writings of the early church help modern readers to better understand how to interpret what they are reading (Acts 8 30-31). There needs to be an authority, a consensus.
    There was one church for the first 1500 years(1000 if you count the schism, but that wasn't a break in doctrine). In just 500 since The Reformation the lamentable disunity among Christians has been expotential as everyone interprets the clear meaning of scripture.
    Atheists now use our division as a stick to beat us with and as evidence against God. "There is no God/truth. You people can't even agree. Why should we take you seriously?"
    Let's return to creedal Christanity and stop telling each other we're going to Hell because we don't worship the same way. If someone adheres to the Christian creed of Nicea, they're with us. They are a Christian. Period. Save the debating for non-Christians who still need to hear The Good News.
    Let's keep praying for and pursuing Christian unity.

    • @susans3411
      @susans3411 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Gruenders good question, but no, because niether of those two issues would, in and of themselves, exclude a soul from Heaven.
      A person could have a wrong belief about the papacy (for or against, first among equals or leader) and not lose their salvation. Now, how they live out their beliefs/ opinions, how they treat those of a different view, that could impact their destination. It's all about the love.
      Back in those tumultuous days (turn of the first millenium), however, it would have been much more difficult to come to my conclusion. Jesus repeatedly prayed in the Garden that we would be ONE. Well, we screwed that up through personal sin (including myself here). After all the divisions in Christianity, we need to begin with the unity we all share‐-the creeds.
      The Eastern Church and the Western Church are in schism, not division, and, as time progresses, there is ever more hope of a full communion again. Rome has never not recognized the validity of "Constantinople." And, vice versa. Christianity needs both lungs. This is true of the Protestant denominations as well. We need each other.
      There is so much love of Christ expressed in all denominations. We can learn from and share our spiritualities. If we'll stop vilifying each other for worshiping differently. That's where unity starts. We will never be able to understsnd and work through our differences until we love each other.
      When contemplating this topic, I consider Mark 9:38-41 & Luke 9:50. How can Jesus pray so hard for unity AND allow splintering at the same time? We are all for Christ. Let's stop being against each other. (Doesn't mean there is no true church, just that we need to do our best to be as unified as we can and let God sort out the rest, either in this life or the next. Like the Sabbath, the church was made for the people, not the people for the church. ) IMHO

    I enjoy the part that you explain they dealt with the same problems as today. To me, it seems as though this new idea of "don't bring religion into this" leaves humans to think they have power to decide rationalize and fix these things themselves without guidance from the Bible. This idea is pushed into schools sure for religious freedom but ultimately to tell us to let those who are higher in authority decide for us rather than using our God given rationality to see what is right and wrong. I believe God is within us all, and the Holy Spirit makes it so that we can do kind things and continue to do right by others. There is a lot of political and business interest to gain when children are taught at a young age don't use the Bible for guidance. Those who own businesses rather its medical advice, therapy, drugs, people coping with alcoholism turning to their friends/peers for advice is all wrong. The truth is the Bible is here to guide us and help us solve all the same problems, but we have been brain washed to believe Religion and Beliefs are meant to be hushed and kept quiet... why because this only benefits the devil. You cannot do what God has intended for you to do when you're consumed with drugs, addicted to sex, pornography and ultimately its a waste of your time. We know time is very valuable and each person should use their time to do right by others and live by God's will. Using ones time to continue to sin doesn't progress any individual. Ultimately this causes insecurity within, self loathing which is what the devil wants so someone continues to believe they are stuck where they are or cant succeed and they become a selfish, materialistic person who is unable to do right by others. If we stopped worshipping the God's of this world, we'd have way more time to do right by others. Love and Light thats God and Christ I believe in the Holy Trinity God bless.

      Post-Apostolic Church I wish you guys would really check out amazing story, that the Western christians have no idea of. It is so awesome material for a good, faith uplifting video to be made for all christrians to see. It's about Alexandr 1 tsar in 1812, who in the rising of Napoleon to power, became a real born again believer. He ordered for Western protestants come and create Bible Society in Russia. He gave order to translate Bible from old slavonic to common Russian- the Bible we have now, that is in incredibly beautiful poetic language, which by most part preserved. He strongly believed, that Napoleon will lose this war, though popes and his council surrounding counted him as mad man and asked not to dream, but to surrender before Napoleon took over Russia. Then real miracles started and God was for Russians, because Tsar believed God wholeheartedly. Napoleon troops were dying like flies and surrendering to peasants in droves. Then Russians moved to Europe, liberating Europe with English speaking allies. There is one word left(I'm not sure true or false) in Western vocabulary: BISTRO, - means :snack or small meal on the way. So this word is from Russian word -БЫСТРО. It came to be, when Russian troops were occupying France, they would go in taverns and shout at women waitresses : БЫСТРО,БЫСТРО! (BYISTRO) which means FASTER FASTER!, bring up food on to table,we are hungry!"So this word stuck to be for sliced meat and some gravy, with rice or potato, you know what I mean.
      But popes of Russian Orthodoxy were like sticks in the wheel of Alexandr, constantly messing with him and stood up against the translation, holding on to Post- Nicene fallacies, where mere man not allowed to read Bible on his own. They wanted to keep status quo with old slavonic language, that few understood. They, like Pharisees of Sanhedrin, took all the power in Russia and kept people in dark.
      Russian Tsars understood, that West was rising, because of Protestant Reformation. Consequently West started industrial revolution - the outcome of Protestant work ethic, when Russian Tsars didn't want to left behind technologically. And it's even before Alexandr, Peter The Great started cutting birds and dress up people in to western clothes. With Western influence, there came debauchery of life style and small cards of pictures with pornographic images from France. Alexandr felt his heart empty, after touching that garbage. He knew, that only dressing in to West clothes and chasing technology is not enough, some other things were making West great. But popes had legitimate NO-NOs to reformation in Russia, because they pointed out on to France, where King's head and his intelligentsia were chopped off and the whole political unstable mess with that came to be.
      There only 100 years would be left before horrible Red Revolution of 1917, - a small time to change things around in human hearts. Though in 1913 Russia was one of the prosperous country on Earth, devilish communist thinking prevailed. People, bypassing first 2 commandments of decalogue, broke another 2 commandments in it: DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT WISH YOUR NEIGHBOR POSSESSION envying him. (Find a Russian friend and watch incredible pre-Putin- right after collapse of USSR of 1992 doc, movie here on you-tube: "Россия, которую мы потеряли"- "Russia, that we lost"- debunking Russian communist and American Left agenda, that Russia was backward society before Red Revolution.
      American people mistakenly thinking, that it's all because of communists. But it's all because of Russian Orthodox Church, where they pushed back reformation in Russia, so that people would not have full access to Bible. Baptists and evangelicals were greatly persecuted: read it in book : "In the cauldron of Russia" I.S. Prochanov, and ecpecially in the book that looks like not translated yet: В.А. Попов "Стопы Благовестника. Жизнь и труды В.Г. Павлова"(V. A. Popov " Steps of the Evangelist. Life and works of V.G. Pavlov") In them Russian evangelicals testify, how popes horrifically persecuted Evangelical christians, that Western christians are not aware of. Popes would do things, that makes hair stand up on the back. They would sent evangelicals in to Siberia with worst criminals, like murders, take away kids in to government orphanage, prohibited to burry dead evangelicals on the public cemeteries, slap with enormous fines, close down houses of prayer, take away Bibles and chidren literature, even send killers and petty criminals to murder and beat down evangelicals. (All of it and worse communist will repeat, because popes and communists have one common father- Satan himself, like American lefties and muslims- have common father Satan) Popes created a very, very bad and famous book, that was a table book of Henry Ford and Hitler himself, according which he wrote his Mine Kapf. This famous Russian book -is the trigger of modern antisemitism in the world and responsible for millions of Jews "legitimately" slaughtered. It translated in to 28(+-) languages, it called "Protocol of Elders of Zion". This book brought horrific suffering in to Russia, that Churchill said: no nation on Earth suffered this much as Russians. Russia had millions of Jews in it, and Russia became great, because of them. But When they started pogrom, Russians lost their Russia and lost civil war with reds, because white forces started robbing and murdering Jews, while Jewish young men were fighting in White Army against Reds. Reds use this, and many Jews crossed to Reds. Russian Jew general Vrangel was one of the bravest, and he tried to stop luting and murder of Jews. But popes teachings in hearts of Russians prevailed. Popes will pay for it dearly, thousands of popes will die horrible death of the hands of satanic Reds. Numbers 24:9 “Blessed is he who blesses you,
      And cursed is he who curses you.” Russians and Russian Jews moved to West, escaping Red commies and created lots of positive things: first helicopter, first TV, first VCR(video magneto-phone), first "bull nose" of ship hull, and many many other things in second and third generation, like google and patent for hybrid car, which Toyota will exploit,closing the deal with Russian inventor right before court fightings.
      The name of the story (about Alexandr and first Bible translation in to Russian) is - Александр Руденко "История перевода Библии на русский язык" (Alexandr Rudenko "The history of translation of Bible on to Russian language") In many cases America steps in to the same darkness now, where lots of religious folk, but rarely who care about personal relationship with Christ. And let me tell you, in Russian evangelical churches, unfortunately, some kind of apathy settled in now with bunch of rules and regulations. They come for 2 hours on Sundays to listen some singing and preachings, chew each other backs of gossips, but they so neglect by most part personal study of Bible and close relationship with Christ. It's so sad. OK, brother, God bless you, thank you for video. (Is this your voice on the video, or somebody else's? Because it's familiar to me from radio broadcast preachings and from one of my subscription on UTube about book of Revelation)

      Thanks for sharing. Christian persecution is so horrible. I believe that when Christians are persecuted, it is a sign that they are doing something good. They are doing something the world (Satan's kingdom) hates.
      Yes, I also see that Christianity is becoming comfortable. For many people, it just stays on the surface. They do not have a fire in their bones for God and His will. I predict that as more time passes, the difference between the deeply committed Christians and "skin-deep" Christians will grow more different. This can be a good thing because Christ's light can shine brighter in those who are His devoted followers.
      Yes, that is my voice. I certainly take what you said as a compliment. :) This is my only Christian-focused TH-cam channel.

    Tradition plays a major role in how we are to understand Christian doctrine. The early believers did not have Bibles on their shelves. Core Christian tenets were communicated to them by Bishops, who presided over them within geographic localities. Among these Bishops, who were learned and educated men, there was a somewhat common consensus on what the catholic faith consisted of, in both doctrine and practice. It must be remembered that the vast majority of Christians in the early centuries of the Church were illiterate, let alone having a Bible they could resort to for verification of truth. It was primarily the wealthy and privileged who had access to a proper education. Maverick theologies are a dime a dozen. Get ten individuals who say "only the Bible", and these same ten individuals will have ten conflicting interpretations. All this comes about by ignoring Church history and the importance of tradition. The greatest and ablest minds have already laid the ground-work of Christian truth for succeeding ages. The Church, through hard won battles with heresy, set forth her creedal formulas -the Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian creeds. Such documents should be traesured by every Christian as embodiments of what catholic (general, histoic, orthodox) truth entails, and I use these as examples to name a few. Every Christian should read "Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History" to get a grasp of just how important tradition is, as it has been passed down to us through the centuries. The heavy lifting has already been done. All we have to do is embrace this inheritance and cherish it. Great video.

      ...not so sure. Many people who followed Jesus in the early period were Jewish and Jews understood the value of education and both boys and girls were educated in reading, writing and history until they were 14.
      I think the broad sweep illiteracy argument can have other problems also as while the first and second century was very stable, the third was not.
      There are simple rules that apply right across all spectrums of society at all times.

      Valley's gardens the scriptures discussed in the New Testament (the ones Jesus and the apostles referred to) were the ones in the Old Testament. After Jesus died the gospels and letters began to be written. The books in the New Testament weren’t decided on (as “inspired by God”) until the late 4th century. Until then, there were numerous writings... some determined later to be God inspired, some not.
