00:00 Corduroy Introduction
Associated with Old Money, the sporting life laid back elegant outfits. Corduroys are an extremely popular casual wear fabric especially associated with trousers. But do you have to pay a king’s ransom to get quality corduroy?
00:36 What is Corduroy?
The fabric is traditionally made from twisted fabric woven with parallel cords called wales. It has a distinct ribbed appearance and is known for being soft yet durable.

In terms of softness, I personally prefer a really soft feel. I would rank them as the Polo is the stiffest, followed by the LL Bean, and then Cordings and Fort Belvedere are at similar levels and are the softest.
When it comes to details, there’s typically a clear difference between cheaper trousers and more high-end trousers.

I know this isn't your target demographic, but you've got a huge following from younger people such as students who don't have a large budget. I think if you could keep a few of the features but use a cheaper fabric to cut the price roughly in half, these could be huge.
The fabric you use on these pants is heavier than my bathroom towels and that's really impressive.
That would be against their mission to make the very best. Yes it would be nice but it is antithetical to why they made their own line
I know you don't want to hear this but the materials matter. There is a cost to the cheaper fabrics. You can make a lot out of plastic polymers but you're going to get something that will not hold up and need to be thrown away. Filling our planet with thrown away plastic clothes is a huge issue. A big part of classic menswear is not about chasing fads but embracing timelessness. Moving away from accumulation and moving toward selection. There are a lot of ways you can get quality stuff on a budget including thifting and ignoring designer names and learning about the construction and quality. Price and quality aren't always the same thing.
@@HeritageAttCo I perfectly understand that plastic clothes are garbage.
But please don't tell me that it isn't possible to make a somewhat decent _cotton_ fabric and make pants out of it for under 200€.
@@masterkamen371 Well, the first one is decent and its under 200 euros. The higher end one has the cost justified for what it will provide.
this entire channel, video, and all replies went completely over @@masterkamen371 's head
I wore cordoroy when I was younger. They are practical in the Midwest. I like wide wale, high rise, pleated and cuffed. I have not owned any for a very long time. Wool dress pants and chinos are what I wear now. Very interesting video
Earlier this year, I was in a moped accident at 60kph where I slid across the motorway in my RL cords. My knees were shredded underneath, yet the trousers remain perfectly intact - even on very close inspection!
That's impressive. We have had several different RL corduroys over the year. They definitely change up their fabrics.
I'm happy you're safe with knees a little worse for wear. At least you don't have to buy new pants.
hahahaha best cord story ever told
Thanks for the informative article! I've always wanted to know all this about corduroy trousers. One of your best videos!
I have two pairs from Corneliani and I love them so much, and the colors are so vivid
I just ordered some burgundy colored corduroy pants for $100 USD. Before watching this video. I just checked and they are 8 wale, 100% cotton. At least that is good news. I plan to pair them with a light green tweed jacket. Burgundy and light Green. I call that the professorial look.
$75.00 is cheap?!?
Edit: I see that point was addressed, I retract my statement. Lol😂
It all depends on what you want. The cost of the fabric is we per pants is more than $75. So obviously, one could never have them retail for $75. If you want $50 cords, that's fine, just understand what you are compromising on.
You need to watch their cost per wear video! Those 75.00 corduroy pants are more expensive in the long run
@@jacobwebb2544They are if you buy only one. But if you have a $300 budget, you can get four different colors or four different pairs, so if you swap them out at regular intervals, they'll last four times longer. Tbf that'll probably still last less than a single pair of the expensive pants, plus it's questionable if you can even get them in four different colors.
I'm going to throw a spanner in the works... Spencer's trousers based in Yorkshire, hand cut made to measure trousers for £155. You can customize them to your liking and even send them measurements of your favorite trousers (or send them your favourite pair) to be copied. They use Brisbane moss corduroy which wears like iron.
I have many pairs or these (and Moleskin) and I cannot wear them out! - Sorry CG, but being in the UK I don't think they are a direct rival.
They are great value for money and trousers can be hard to get right in terms of comfort so the made to measure service is excellent. @@NCpe9st
Thanks for the heads up. Just been on the site will be ordering from them soon.
@@moorshound3243 They offer a top quality service with a very fast turnaround, I always get my trousers in under three weeks! So if I can help them in any way I do. Enjoy the trousers
$300 is a lot, but Pomella trousers are $400-500 and The armoury corduroys are $550. Its a lot but you wear corduroys only 3-4 months of the year so they will probably last 5-10 years. I just got 3-4 pairs almost new from thrift or outlet for $20-30 from RL and similar and don't mind the lack of details or the fewer color options, but if I was making 6 digit income these would be a pretty good deal.
We have had many RL cords over the year. The fabric wore out quickly. Once you touch it, you can feel the difference immediately, but if you got them for $20-$30 you will still get to wear them a few times before they wear out.
Hopefully Fort Belvedere will make a version that comes with suspender buttons and side adjusters instead of beltloops. I don't wear pants with a belt due to comfort issues.
I believe they were going for a more casual look so there's no provisions for suspenders. Are there not suspenders that clip onto the fabric?
Suspender buttons can be added in a pinch at your alterations tailor, same for removing the belt loops if you desire 🙂
@@masterkamen371 Wearing clip on suspenders is the same as wearing a clip on tie.
They look fantastic Raphael! Great and thoughtful work has clearly gone in to these exquisite corduroy pants!
Now, if we could only have access to them in women's sizes!
Lisa
Thank you, Lisa! We've designed these pants for plenty of alteration possibilities, so you could get these fitted for you!
Excellent video, thank you!
informative and (given the obvious financial interest) surprisingly not an annoying advertisement for fort belvedere. probably the best way to make a video that incorporates your own line.
Imagine Rafael inspecting 20 different cord fabrics trying to find his source. Then, he goes and makes a 30 minute video all about it!!! Truly a man building his home on Mr. Vesuvius. Homie is out of control!!!!
never knew there was so much to know about corduroy fabric, or velours `floer` or ribfluweel (rib velvet) as we say in...ehm belgium and france I suppose
So glad you uploaded another vid on your pants! Im saving up to buy em, and like to know everything I can!!!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Which color are you considering? 🤔
@@gentlemansgazette one of the browns or the racing green! Midnight blue is gorgeous as well :)
Corduroy is difficult as the cheap stuff wears quick and the good stuff wears like iron. You definitely get what you pay for fabric wise. Also the thigh rub show fast on the lesser fabric.
Absolutely, as someone with big thighs, I can attest to that.
Your B roll is some of the funniest stuff on youtube hahaha.
Joy! I am finishing a winter outfit that requires cords. I could not find gsm above 350, yours is 900! And I need thigh room. And I need it in olive. I also enjoy turnups. I require the bestpair a man can buy, and you just designed them. Thank you from a clothing lover
While ordinarily the channel is very impartial and without hidden agenda, It’s hard not see this video as having an ulterior motive of singing the praises of their own product launch. The video espouses the virtues of corduroy weight, double rub durability rating, and large wale size as being markers for quality. However, it neglects to consider hand feel and drape. Some of us actually prefer a smaller, more subtle wale and lighter wearing fabric that is more supple to the touch and hugs the body better than something very robust and heavy as the Fort Belvedere product is.
Quality != durability or weight alone.
Agreed + it neglected the shine and the dying depth effect
Didn’t complete the video as well
Hi there, Raphael touches on things like the nap and drape at a few points in the video, as well as discussing softness. Absolutely, these pants are very robust when you first get them, but after washing and wearing they'll soften very nicely. Of course, if you prefer a smaller wale then there are many pants out there that I'm sure you'll enjoy - after two years of testing, we found this combination was the best for something that wasn't simply a copy of what others are doing on the market.
If you want some modern lightweight slim fit "stretch fabric" junk... suit yourself.
I never thought there could be different kinds of corduroys out there. Nice to know.
As someone who owned cords in all price point there is a difference.
Thank you for reassuring me I made the right choice with L L Bean
Thanks for the video. Would you consider a made-to-measure program?
I think corduroys look great on women too. I have several pair of pants and a couple of jackets that I love to wear. During end -of-season winter sales it’s easy to find mid-range quality cheaper for about $40. Your video is very informative. I enjoyed it very much ❤
What brand for women is equivalent to the beautiful Fort Belvedere brand? Id love to know
I recently saw these new additions in your store and was very impressed by the quality and thought that went into them. Could we get a dark hunter green variant as well?
We already have 14 colors. Our British racing green is pretty close to a hunter green, so we have no plans at present to add even more colors.
@@gentlemansgazette sounds good - We need more jazz covers from Preston, we really like them!
Awesome video again. I just invest in Brooks Brothers curdoroy pants. I just watch sales.
Now TH-cam is reading my mind. Have been thinking the last few days of getting a couple of pair. Never said it out loud.
no but i wish we had more corduroy in women's fashion in the UK. I guess I can see how in America it's associated with old money. In the UK, I guess it's sometimes featured on hunting jackets and peopel who go shooting will use it. I think amongst 'regular' people it's associated with 90s pop culture. It was big in the 90s (because it was bit in the 60s and 70s, which the 90s ultimately stole from). We even had an indie band called corduroy.
Years ago I bought a pair of midnight blue eight wale Cordings corduroy trousers on eBay for under $100. It’s some of the best money I have ever spent.
Of course the Fort Belvedere corduroys were going to come out on top. Not a surprise at all.
Beautiful pants.
Corduroy pants work well for Minnesota. Kind of difficult to lay your hands on a pair of corduroys in the south.
Your cords look beautiful. My problem is that I need a slim cut with a low rise. I have a short rise, short inseam , small waist and slim build. Even the slim cuts with inferior retailers with poor fabrics like J. Crew are baggy in the rear and upper thighs with their slim cut cords. Other than going bespoke, am I out of luck? Are there any made to measure houses that use high quality corduroy fabrics?
I love wearing corduroy pants!
I wear cords in Fall & Winter in place of twills in Spring and Summer as a casual pant ( I do not wear denim). I for one am not going to pay neary $300 for a pair of casual pants. Sven is striving to justfy a very expensive product he has invested.
Each to his own - these corduroys have been created over time by a team of classic style enthusiasts, which is why we're proud of them. If you've found a solution that works for you, that's great too.
Where do you buy your corduroys and summer cotton twills?
I had the same issue with my Polo Ralph Lauren corduroys with the fabric breaking down in the croatch area just after one season of wearing them. I would love to purchase a pair of Fort Belvedere cords, but the dutes, taxes and shipment of them to the UE cost like a half of its original price :(
Im happy with my new uniqlo courudoy, in 3 colors for less than 75$
When was this filmed? Minnesota feels like a Tundra right now!
Minnesota weather, right?! 🥶
I m a fan of flannel wool pant
Would love to be able to order these from the EU without getting hit by VAT and other import taxes, is that currently possible?
Check places like www.myus.com to see what options they have. Even if we sold them in the UK we would still have to apply local taxes...
Why use Acetate as a lining, when there are more environmentally friendly fabrics out there?
Would you guys consider pricing and production transparency for your products like this one
Pricing changes all the time. The cost for corduroy went up 5 times in a year. Manufacturing had 4 prices increases in 9 months. So by the time the video would air it is already wrong and outdated information. So no, it makes no sense to do that
@@gentlemansgazette Quite dismissive! He mentioned videos on the production as well. It would make perfect sense to produce videos like this on why your products are better. The story behind the fabrics chosen and the craftsmanship that goes into them. Which is what this video focuses on.
@@TheTubaEmporer Production transparency is possible, but we do employ some craftspeople who are more traditional and don't want their secrets being shared. Hopefully, you understand we're not being dismissive, just realistic 😉
I am 5' 7" and about 150 lbs. I can wear a 34" waist but I find your measurements at the hip, thigh and knee much bigger than other corduroys I have.
Im portuguese. I buy made in Portugal clothing only. Its amazing because most of the stuff is of high quality and its still around the 100 euro range (thats expensive for us native Portuguese) but then again, if you think on the kong term… its cheap
We need some Fort Belvedere shirts (with West Indian Sea Island Cotton)!
What makes you go for Sea island Cotton? ack on the team has a few from Turnbull & Asser and he's definitely not fond of ironing them!
Love this. Please do a video like this on Suit Fabrics...
Which suit fabrics should be focused on?
@@gentlemansgazetteWool or silk.
My god thoserickers Stowe are beautiful. I'm so sorry my pair just didn't fit me right
With corduroy pants I can get 6 pairs of Wrangler for 300 EUR and they are pretty good for what they are. Not really an item I would focus my budget on in the sense of getting a premium version. That extra budget imo is better spent on getting a better quality blazer or something like that.
Its beautiful cloth indeed but Im disappointed Gentleman's Gazette totally ignored the British Roots of Corduroy. It was pioneed in Manchester, UK during the British industrial revolution and it was prefect for the industrial worker to keep warm in. Hence why in Europe its known as "Manchester cloth" rather than Corduroy. I love that Barbour made its ironic Waxed Jackets with Corduroy collars, it feels great on my Barbour Int Duke Wax. My father loves his Corduroy trousers from M&S, I will admit as a youngster I thought it was old school cloth. However Im converted and Im looking to get a couple of pairs of Corduroy trousers this year in Khaki and Green colours.
Cordings of Piccadilly London have the finest Corduroy Trousers.
Everyone on our team got cordings. They only fit 2 out of 5 people. They have a low rise, tight thigh, and a button fly. If that's what you like then go with Cordings. If you prefer a higher rise, more room in the thighs for larger 34" and up and a zip fly with a ticket pocket and belts loops. Go with Fort Belvedere
@@gentlemansgazetteof course a zip fly is the more convenient choice. But the real advantage button flies have over zippers is that you get no warping after washing over time and wear. Worth the hassle in the long run to me.
@@gentlemansgazettewhat sizes have you tried? I wear size 38 and they sit above my belly button
Cheap clothes are a modern phenomenon, in truth cheap isn't cheap you spend as much in the long run and fill landfills up with last seasons rubbish
I have corduroys that I had made by a bespoke tailor, can I wash them?
I would think you should take them to a professional cleaner to better preserve the fabric! Btw you shouldn't wash them after every wear maybe after about five times or if there's a stain.
Ask your tailor! lol
Sven Raphael Schneider - nomen est omen (Schneider = tailor).
I like a double rub sometimes!
One thing I don’t think I have seen from your channel is anything about men’s evening robes, or bath robes
Here we go! www.gentlemansgazette.com/pajamas-dressing-gown-guide/?
Paid $100 from L.L.Bean in Canada and couldn't be happier.
Sometimes its a good idea to work with what you have until you get enough money for a better product
I thought the tag said 'Made in India'? @7:16
Right you are! Thanks for spotting an on-screen "typo" there 😅
Black Friday sale? lol
I haven’t tuned in for a while. Why’s the music in the intro gone? Quite sad since it was so iconic.
Our theme is still there for those who love it as much as we do! 😉
This an interesting video idea, but feels a lot ickier when it’s your own product.
I know you have previously addressed what I am about to say but it still begs repeating. You should include information for women's clothing as well. If we are talking classic styles, basic pieces, materials, wearability and workmanship then it should be very similar. I dare say most of your work could be done from your research on men's apparel which would only need additional tweaking to include women's clothing.
True, but this is _Gentleman's_ Gazette! lol. Although I have to say, cords look great on women who can carry off the high-waisted look.
I honestly don't know why I'm following this channel. The majority of people in the US are average people who are poor to middle class. Im one of those people and i can't afford the clothes he's talking about.
All the videos I've seen on this channel tells me that all my clothes are trash and i paid good money on my clothes.
This channel is only for the rich people and it took me awhile to realize that
3 dollars at walmart right now lol cant beat that
I’m not rich by any means. I use this channel to coordinate the clothes I have. Watching this channel I can shop at kohl’s and Macy’s for a fraction of the cost and get outfits that look about as good as what’s shown on these vids. Is the quality as good? No way but I get compliments all the time on my dress. Nobody ever asks me how much I pay for my clothes. A good tailor is a must, too.
$75 pants aren't cheap pants.
I like quality but who could afford cords at $295 with Biden Economics in play, please!
Only thrash wears corduroy.😂
Trash?
