    What if you don’t match into any specialty? (No backup). Do you re-apply to the same ones in the next cycle?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Starting April 13 (the day after match day) all of the open residency spots from around the country will be posted on a list on CaRMS - these are programs that either didn't have enough people apply OR for whatever reason chose not to fill all their spots with the applicants that did apply. This is the starting point for the 2nd iteration of the CaRMS match. At that point you can either pick a specialty from the new list and apply again or just apply again next year (often taking the 1 year to do more electives in medical school and make you more competitive) 🤙

    Holly smokes that seems to be so complex. Ok so u apply for family medicine. What would a subspecialty be?? I think u would make a awesome family Doctor!

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tell me about it lol 🥲 A subspecialty for family medicine would be emergency medicine / OB/GYN / Anesthesia / or even surgery in some cases! This might need to be a topic for another video but in some rural parts of the country, you can do 2 years of family medicine, do a plus 1 year training program in surgery and then work as a surgeon. From what I've heard, this tends to be more common in places without surgeons who did the 5-7 year specialty training.
      Thanks Sherry :D

    Since Canadian residencies select candidates BEFORE MCCQE 1, what academic grades do they use to assess residents? Med school grades? That is a problem because some schools have pas/ fail grading system.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most schools in Canada use a pass/fail system (I actually think its all of them at this point, but can't confirm). Grades are not used in the selection process beyond raising red flags about applicants if you've failed. The selection system relies on ECs, publications, letters of recommendation and your various assessments from your clerkship electives - you can see my full residency application for more info

    A simple question. Can I apply for matching as an IMG without being a Canadian citizen or if to have a permanent license? This what IMG stands for.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you need to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. IMG simply means that you graduated from a non - Canadian school. There are many Canadian citizens that could not get into a Canadian school and travel elsewhere for medical school. They are still considered IMGs

      Sorry Roberto, that's a pretty niche topic - especially since I'm not an internal medicine applicant. Your best bet would be to look it up on the website so that I don't get anything wrong :) Good luck!

    I know in the US students applying for residency that year have a student created forum on reddit or discord where they discuss all things residency applications. there are even specialty specific excel spreadsheets with user contribution information. is there something like this created for med students in Canada?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately for Canadian students... the online community for medical students / residents is significantly smaller in size than for our American counterparts. There was a forum created this year, but to my knowledge, much of it was relevant to IMGs trying to match into Canada. I definitely think we'll have more forums and student shared resources in the near future though :)

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In what sense? The applications are mostly similar with some key differences from what I've seen. IMG vs CMG is also a crucial part - if you're a CMG applying to the states for residency, you need your USMLE exams as well. Familiarize yourself with both applications for your applicant category and good luck :)
