For real this is huge. My mimicking was WAY ahead of my singing when I started, leaning on that ability shamelessly is probably the thing that helped improve so much so quickly. And learning vocal technique has made my mimicking better, doing accents is no sweat when you learn vowels.
Greg, I appreciate you and your work so much. I was never a "real" singer in my 71 years of life even though I took lessons and sang with a good choral orchestra in my 40's. Then I just stopped. not even a note till I was 70. Your videos are so meaningful to me on so many levels. The most important for me is watching your process of "playing with" and training your voice. You are absolutely right in saying that we learn almost everything by mimicking. That's how we learn to talk, walk, do math, read etc.We copy and steal all the time. That is how the field of music or words or literature or work or life all work. Mimicking and then making it our own with our own twists. Thank you thank you thank you Greg. Keep growing and keep posting.
This is exactly How I discovered how to mix! I've heard the concepts and seen vocal teachers do it and tried to do it, but it just didn't sound right to me. Then I listened to my favorite singers, Steve Perry especially. Then I heard him utilizing some sort of mix. Then I was like, "Oh my, I've been doing it right all this time." So, you're absolutely right. Mimicry is the best way to learn (for me at least). However, it's not like you're taking everything from that singer. You're just practicing and using their techniques. I know this video didn't talk about mixed voice, but the way you talked about mimicry just reminded me of that time I discovered to mix properly! Thank you for the tip, nonetheless!
Literally just had the exact same revelation with mixed voice... I've spent weeks getting bogged down in where my head voice is supposed to be etc and trying to get it to come out with some oomph and not really grasping anything at all... I tried doing 'Kiss from a rose' by 'Seal' a while back, but it didn't go well... But this vid made me go listen to Seal.. And realising he has a lot of upper range going on, I tried mimicking it quietly, then kind of felt something different in my throat and now I'm like "Bayyybeee!! Iiiiii cann paint yoooo..."
Having tonal flexibility is where it's at, in my opinion. Mimicking is something I like to do with a wide variety of tonal styles.... Not to try to sound just like someone else's voice but to have the tonal flexibility to do all kinds of stuff like all kinds of artists, in a way that feels true in my own voice. Do basically what you said.... 😎
reminded me of when my brother and I put on this extra redneck country twang. being a red neck from the country myself. I dont normally talk like them, we'd goof around and what not. not until we ordered at mc Donald's and and sounded illterate.

Recently I’ve been trying to really mimic the voice of a song I’m trying to sing and that, along with your other videos, has really helped me be able to sing it!!

Real shit. I started out in choir, and made my most rapid singing progress ever by just mimicking the really good dude in my section the first year I made the top choir in high school. Worked perfectly in choir too since you're supposed to try to blend as well as possible with the others in your section anyway, lol. Then later on I learned to sing rock and pop vocals much better by just mimicking the music I listened to.
This is so interesting. I have always been good at mimicking and making voices. I am kinda new to singing, but when I started doing it I was confused why I was able to pick things up faster.... turns out I am just good at mimicking!

Greg, you are doing something unique here, very creative and interesting concept, cause when you learning instruments you do transcribe and copy the slides or bends, what if we do all of those, cause vowels are literally ranges.
Just to add to what you’re singing : Chino Moreno, the lead singer of the band deftones who’s this amazing and legendary metal singer learned to sing from doing exactly that. He didn’t learn from singing lessons.

For me, when I sing songs, I try to be as accurate as the original in terms of the pitch, but won't try hard to mimic. As long as the result is pretty good I am quite satisfied.

My tone is all over the place . Infact I sound best singing others songs , but when I do scales etc it’s a totally different tone and sound. When I write my own stuff it lacks the right tone. I feel like I have a handful of different voices and no consistency . This has also been one of my problems . I sometimes find my own self created tone comes from a quieter voice yet I have no issues emulating others songs. Makes no sense

try widening your mouth as you sing. you'll notice that your sound becomes brighter, compared to when you pout your lips. it's like literally smiling, grinning big as you sing. this is effective, because basically, you're unmuffling the source of your voice
I thought of Kobe/Jordan.... I'm fantastic at mimicry of tones, and enjoy analytics. I can pull off some killer Morgan Wallen, Cody Johnson, Riley Green, and several other genres/singers. I can hit sub-harmonics and whistle tones. Overall, I feel like I'm trash though so I don't sing. Lol.

It is okay to practice but better to rest. The folds are swollen which is why the pitch naturally drops. You want to rest your voice in order to recover from the swelling faster and using it will prolong the swelling period typically. Hope this helps! -Gregory
I can't find my falsetto! i feel like it doesn't come out naturally. most people do falsetto and feel it through their nose but i don't, it sounds more like through my throat. idk how to do it pls help 😭
Are you supposed to learn the whole song at the first instance to kinda get the lyrics and some details before starting to pay close attention to some overlooked details or is it best to start off with a completely new song you are now trying to learn?

Hi, your videos have really taught me a lot, I have a question involving belting. I am currently 15 years old and have been singing for about a year and a half yet I can't belt notes as high as other people can particularly adults. I find that even adults that generally have no singing experience can hit those notes comfortably but those notes are like an extreme belt for me. Does this have anything to do with my age? and will i be able to naturally belt higher as i age? thank you
i copied vibrato from an artist by mimicking the way they said words then applying the feeling i had in my mouth/voice to other words, now im pretty decent at vibrato
Can you please pull the background music? You don't need it and it just distracts from the lesson. It overpowers you at times too, but I just find it unnecessary and annoying. Apart from that, really enjoying your content. Thank you!
