  • What do you know about World War 1? Let's have a refresher together and learn what the veterans went through.
    It was particularly interesting to me to reflect on the role Irish People played in World War 1 with the British Army at a time when the Easter Rising occurred as a result of the Brits being otherwise occupied.
    I also enjoyed looking back on the past and reflecting on what happened that contributed to bringing us to where we are today with Russia and Ukraine.

    You have to do part 2. Also, it was really simplified to say that France wanted land back from Germany. France was also very much looking at expanding their overseas territories, and behind the scenes were arguably the country doing the most to push for war before it actually started.

    • @michaelsommers2356
      @michaelsommers2356 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, France did want Alsace-Lorraine back, but they didn't want to go to war to get it. In July, French newspapers were not filled with calls for war. Instead they were filled with a sensational murder trial (A politician's wife shot and killed an editor who had said nasty things about her husband. The husband had refused to fight a duel with the editor, so she took things into her own hands. Her lawyer argued successfully that since she was a woman who had been forced to take the role of a man, she was not guilty by reason of insanity (the first time that argument had been made in France.))

    • @shakya00
      @shakya00 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The French educational system cultivated A LOT the idea of taking back Alsace-Lorraine into young kids. So, it isn't true. People did want this land back and what do you mean by "and behind the scenes were arguably the country doing the most to push for war before it actually started." ? Because France isn't factually the country that started WW1 and had nothing to do with it so I don't see what you are referring to.

    • @Entiox
      @Entiox ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shakya00 I'm referring to the work of French diplomats in the month between the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and the declaration of war encouraging Russia to declare war on the Austro-Hungarian empire if it declared war on Serbia so that they could expand their empire in eastern Europe while France expanded it's empire in western Europe and German controlled areas of Africa. While Serbia and Russia were often close they were not allies, and in fact a month before the assassination there had been some tensions between them when Russia intervened to restore the government of Prime Minister Nikola Pašić that had been dissolved by King Peter I of Serbia in favor of a new government as Pašić's political views more closely aligned with those of Russia.

    • @alanbeaumont4848
      @alanbeaumont4848 ปีที่แล้ว

      French Colonial expansion was essentially complete by 1898, when confronted by the British at Fashoda in Africa. They then agreed boundaries and would go on to form the Entente Cordiale to counter Germany, which was the most powerful military force in Europe. France was keen to retake territories lost to Germany in 1870, but only in alliance with Russia and not willing to make the first move.

    Trench warfare happened because of advances in weapons, which made it possible to kill people faster and at a greater distance than before. The old tactics of armies marching towards each other across open ground would no longer work. The result was a sort of stalemate, where advancing on the enemy was so dangerous that both sides would dig in for long periods. The stalemate was eventually broken by the invention of the tank, which made it possible to move forward under fire without being killed.
    I'd like to see you do part 2 of this series. You never finished the Oversimplified series on the American Civil War, but I guess it's been too long for you to get back to that.
    One of the better movies about World War 1 was Paths of Glory by Stanley Kubrick. It's about a court martial in which soldiers were accused of cowardice for retreating after being ordered to make an impossible charge on opposing trenches. It's as much a political and courtroom drama as it is a war movie.

    • @michaelsommers2356
      @michaelsommers2356 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trench warfare was nothing new. Look at the siege of Sevastapol in the Crimean War, or the last stages of the American Civil War. Also the Russo-Japanese war. And many sieges over the centuries.

    • @Jeff_Lichtman
      @Jeff_Lichtman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelsommers2356 Siege warfare and trench warfare are two different things. A siege is when an army surrounds a fort, city, or other stronghold and bombards it while cutting off access to supplies, food, water, etc. Trench warfare is when opposing armies in the field dig in and remain below ground level, becoming immobilized in long opposing lines. In a trench war, neither side is surrounded or cut off from its supplies.

    • @michaelsommers2356

    Several years ago I took a great class on the literature of WWI (both sides, in translation). One of the more disturbing aspects of trench warfare that doesn't get talked about enough is the term "blown up".
    Mortar shells do not explode on impact, they have a timer. The ground was so churned up that it was basically all mud. So what would happen is that a shell would land and sink into the ground several inches, then explode, pushing several tonnes of mud, stones, and debris straight up in the air. If anyone was in the vicinity, they'd go up too.
    It was unlikely the blast would kill you. You be knocked around, possibly concussed, fall 3-5 metres to a hard landing, then have several tonnes of mud land on you. If your friends couldn't dig you out quickly you'd suffocate. Best case scenario was broken bones.
    That's what being "blown up" means. Literally being thrown into the air by an explosive device below you.

    I know that Australia and New Zealand are allied with the motherland, but we were at the end of the earth, we could have turned a blind eye and could have lived in more or less in blissful isolation.
    However the ANZAC’s bravely answered the call and and the rest is bloody history!
    You do what you know is right.

    All of the crowned heads of Europe were related in 1914, which had a direct effect on the lead-up to the war. Also, there was a lot of posturing and bluffing going on in the lead-up phase with each side sure the other side would back down, then once the wheels were in motion, no one was sure how to stop it. Everything they though they knew was based on outdated assumptions and rules which no longer applied. There was a famous book (The Guns of August) written about how Europe blundered and miscalculated its way into WW1, and how tragically avoidable it was.
    Of course, after a 20 year break to rest, re-arm, and grow a new generation to slaughter, the so-called e "Great War" led directly to WW2, which led to the Cold War and various regional proxy wars, etc. And here we are today. One could argue that it's all been one big, 100+ year-long event, interspersed with hot and cold phases.
    Chewie is very wise with his "everyone loves snacks" approach to world peace. 🐶

    Definitely do a part 2, but I was also curious if you had seen "The King's Man"? It is the third movie in the series, but it is a prequel which centers around the events of WW1. I thought it was very well done and has some interesting information of its own not shared in this video like what the relationship between those world leaders was at the time. Although being European, you may already know.

    Regarding Germany's invasion of Belgium, the Germans made a strategic error in assuming the Russians were slow to mobilize. Within a few weeks of war, a Russian army (armies, there were many) marched into German East Prussia as well as Austro-Hungarian (AH) Galacia. The A-H had larger numbers in the East, but got curb stomped by Russia, leaving only Germany the sole task of stopping the millions of Russian troops. The Germans did stop them at Tannenberg, but they had to divert hundreds of thousands of men from the Western front in France and Belgium to do it. So the Germans didn't have the numerical advantage soldiers to fight Belgium, France and Britain (and France mobilized and Britain ferried it's troops). The larger number of Entente Forces stopped and pushed back Germany in the West until the result was stalemate. So, if Russia didn't mobilize as it did, Germany would have had more numbers and may have been able to Paris before Britain got it's army across. Plus, the larger numbers would have allowed them to surround and bypass strongpoints like fortresses rather then having highly costly assaults.

    An event similar to public opinion shift on soldiers in Easter Rising, but on lower scale, happened here in colonial India in this time as well.
    India had a gigantic army under British control in this era, which the British wanted to bring to Europe to fight the Germans. But it could not be easily mobilized or sent overseas without Indian public support. So the British promised Dominion status (i.e. partial independence, similar to what Ireland won a few years later) to India in exchange for support in WW1.
    This is something Gandhi and Indian nationalists had wanted for a long time. Supporting the British and getting autonomy in return was seen as a stepping stone to independence. And thus the Indians went and fought on Western Front, Middle East and Africa in huge numbers.
    ...Except the promise turned out to be a lie. British committed various atrocities in India near the end of the war to quash unrest, and had no intention of giving up any power or profits. So once the soldiers returned, they became very unpopular, and their stories and experience was mostly discarded and forgotten by the public over next decade.

    As an American, I would like to see part two. Both WW1 and WW2 were a complete mess. I do agree with you that the war in Urkraine might get bigger especially if Bulgaria gets involved. All it will take is one wrong step by Russia and Bulgaria for this to get other troops involved.
