  • Oh my gosh! George Carlin discusses the American Dream from Life Is Worth Losing - Dumb Americans - George Carlin
George Denis Patrick Carlin was an American comedian, actor, author, and social critic. Regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time, he was dubbed "the dean of counterculture comedians". He was known for his black comedy and reflections on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and taboo subjects. His "seven dirty words" routine was central to the 1978 United States Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5-4 decision affirmed the government's power to censor indecent material on public airwaves.
The first of Carlin's 14 stand-up comedy specials for HBO was filmed in 1977. From the late 1980s onwards, his routines focused on sociocultural criticism of American society. He often commented on American political issues and satirized American culture. He was a frequent performer and guest host on The Tonight Show during the three-decade Johnny Carson era and hosted the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975. His final comedy special, It's Bad for Ya, was filmed less than four months before his death from cardiac failure. In 2008, he was posthumously awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. In 2004, he placed second on Comedy Central's list of top 10 American comedians. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him second (behind Richard Pryor) on its list of the 50 best stand-up comedians of all time.

As a university professor, I can sadly confirm that many schools artificially inflate grades to make themselves look better. It just ends up hurting students, though.

    • @filrabat1965
      @filrabat1965 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Truer words are rarely spoken, if ever. All the "schooling" in one's life won't mean jack if you don't teach them how to question claims. But the education system doesn't want that because - to paraphrase a line from the last scene of Good Morning Vietnam (1987) "They don't want our children to say or do anything controversial". Whether it's the powers-that-be, parents, or PTAs (parent-teacher associations) are ignorant and the questioners uncovered it or if that questioning is a threat to their power over the community doesn't matter. This lack of critical thinking will keep individuals and society stagnant. Fortunately, the Internet does offer hope (as it's a source of info independent of the local community, new media, advertizers and the entertainment industry).

This was the first George Carlin clip I ever saw. I was a teenager and he had just died, and it was a complete shock to my system, having grown up in a bubble, pretty much buying into the American exceptionalism propaganda I was fed by school and the media. And nothing about it has lost relevance in the decade and a half or so since it was recorded.

I can attest to the lowering of passing grades just from 2005 to 2014. While I was wrapping up my high school diploma in 2005, the passing grade was a C average (76). While attending the local technical college in 2014, the passing grade was a C- (72). In eight years, the passing grades dropped four points. As for coming after our mandatory retirement funds called Social Security, they have been trying to for at least 20 years. My view is we are just pawns on the chessboard being moved around by the wealthiest people.

I find it depends on the country and it's different for each one, but I do find that the US is one of the worse for stripping away a lot of these things with others like the UK just behind them.
But what I find with a lot of countries, especially European ones in the EU is the resistance of the people to fight back, the UK did have that fight decades ago but it's lost its way, the lost it before that and I'm noticing that countries where the public are willing to stand up and hold their governments to account are in a better position for it, anytime you see riots, protest in European countries, that's a good thing because it means the public are not taking things lying down, whereas in the US and UK, people have been so subdued that governments have been stripping away things slowly over time by watering them down, hoping the public won't notices and it's no surprise why the US and UK are slipping in the quality of life index over the last 2 decades.
At the end of the day, you've got to blame the people for this, governments are a reflection of the people, the people are the ones with the real power, but if they don't use it, governments will walk all over them, which is happening in a lot of countries, but many European countries are doing far better on that scale, but more could be done.

When I was working on my BFA I thought I would take some education courses just in case I needed something to fall back on. Everyone I talked to from my professors to numerous people in the primary and secondary education systems threw up their hands in horror. Thank God I took their advice! When Texas began standardized testing the failure rate was tremendous so they so they made the test easier and when this didn't improve the situation significantly the teachers spent a month preparing their classes for the test. They would spend all day everyday taking practice tests and otherwise preparing for the test, with all other classes were neglected and of course this just served to make matters worse in the long run.
Give Chewie a hug for me, I love you and goodbye for now.

Man I miss him. I would love to hear what he has to say about everything that has happened from 2007-now. He always had a way of being over the edge but it was so poetic and on point. You always went "eh I wouldn't have said it that way but he's right." A modern-day Voltaire.

yyYYYYEEEESSSSSssss! More George Carlin please. This man was not just a Comedian, he was a Philosopher.
But I'll admit, in this one he does more ranting than... philisophisizing lol

It’s amazing how many people agree with what Carlin said yet we never see change. It’s very frustrating. Carlin is a legend who’s words will live on forever

I put it down to this.
Comedians help to draw attention to things we’d rather not hear. But asking for the comedian to also be the one the propose a solution is asking a comedian to be something other than a comedian.
Solutions need to happen after your eyes have been opened. And that’s a whole other step that is uncomfortable to take. Change is active. We can nod our heads and go “you know, he’s right” forever, but it’s the next stage where we say “and I’m not going to stand for it anymore” that gets people hesitant.

Some of my favorite George Carlin quotes:
If a man is alone in a forest and talking and a woman is not there to here him, is he still wrong?
One Tequila, two Tequila, three Tequilas, floor.
Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.
If a lawyer can be disbarred and a priest defrocked wouldn’t it stand to reason that a musician could be denoted or an electrician delighted?

He is spot on. When I was a kid a fat person was rare and then "diet" foods and drinks came out. So then people thought it was low calorie so they ate more and surprise, they got fat.
