I’m doing a 64 frame off build on my channel right now that has the same rust on the firewall, please include on your future video how you make those repairs. Thank you! Love the channel.

Im doing the same. I used a 4 door for parts. Chopped and patched the areas that had rust. I found a gentleman on eBay who sells pre fabbed shaved firewalls but they don’t look stock obviously. Once I welded all the pieces in I seam sealed then Epoxy primered the entire firewall. Looks pretty good I’m happy with the results. This is my first “real” frame off build. Always learning and looking for advice.

X2 on the DP primer. 30 years ago i blasted my 65 GTO (that was covered with surface rust) then coated with PPG DP primer, almost no bubble back in that amount of time. Stuff works great .

Its funny I just found this video and im at the same stage of my 1964 impala restoration. Ive had that car for 23 years since I was 17. I did some driveway restoration and painted it a couple times over the years, but I'm finally in a position to do a full frame off. I just finished the body cleaning. I did it all with a DA and wire brushes, sanded the whole underside laying on my back with the body on blocks. That sucked lol. Anyway it's just interesting seeing all the same rust holes on your car that I had on mine. Mine had the infamous rotted driver side rear body mount, and the crack in the quarter panel right at the back of the rear window. I replaced the body mount and still need to fix the crack. Ive welded it up before but it always cracked again due to the paper thin rusted body mount. I think Ill weld a plate in behind the crack this time just to be sure. Nice video, very informative and good to see I'm doing things the right way.

I’ve watched all your videos multiple times so I apologize if I keep asking questions bro. I was thinking…those holes in the roof. How the hell does moisture/water even get up in and under there? How would those be fixed as media blasting will only clean the outside of the roofs sheet metal I would assume that under the roof right there in that particular you wouldn’t be able to clean the underside because the roof to rear wheelhouse bracket/headliner tabs are there. How does this get fixed bro? Thanks man.

In my opinion chemical dipping and stripping would be a better way to prep the body, all rust and caulking undercoating would be removed and you would avoid the blasting material hidden in every nook and cranny.

@@guzzifabrication3448 I am flattered that you answered my comment. I have been in the autobody repair business since 1962 and have owned my own shop since 1967. My son is my partner, and I am still in business. I worked on many of the cars you are restoring when they were new! I have never tackled a restoration as extensive as you are doing. I agree with everything you are doing and your methods. Your attention to detail is an important part of any collision repair or restoration. I love to do restoration but it is a specialty business and I found doing collision repair the most profitable considering my circumstances. I know of no chemical stripper near you but I feel by your answer that you agree with me. There are none near me as well, I am in Long Island NY. There are few chemical strippers, probably because of environmental laws. The few I see on TH-cam do a good job and the result is a great way to start a restoration. You are a true craftsman. Please keep up the great videos, I watch and learn from every one of them.

The best finish on metal is when the media blast is done with aluminum oxide another advantage is aluminum oxide leaves a barrier over the metal to prevent rust for lengthy time I've head part sitting in my garage for over a year and not rust

I have a question, I’m about to get the front clip of my car blasted. So from the doors forward and underneath. As far as epoxy primer goes do I have to prep the metal before shooting like scotch brite or 80 grit everything or can I just shoot epoxy after blasting
Of course getting all & much as the media out as possible before hand.
