Orlando is pretty far from the coast tho. I lived in the coast (Melbourne beach) and my power definitely went off. Other than that it was definitely a minor cane. Not much damage, just a bunch of tree debris which is typical.
I live in Miami Florida, and every time a hurricane comes through it puts me into the deepest sleeps I ever get. Something about the wind and pelting rain that relaxes me.
9:48 Jake, I don't think you realized it, but it looks like you got the power flash from an 'eye wall eddie', or brief tornado. You can see the towering funnel cloud in several of the flashes
Was on one of the last flights out of Orlando when Irma hit, so seeing this video when you originally posted it was personally really interesting as these were places I had been walking around only a few hours prior.
It's a good idea to book a room in a Disney hotel during a hurricane! They are on some of the most solid ground in Orlando and they are all built to a VERY high structural standard! I have heard a lot of people put up elderly in rooms there if they are worried during a storm because they have food and water that (usually) lasts.... Glad you're safe!

I know in my hotel, we have a minimum charge rate that it defaults to on low occupancy. It can be overridden, however they honestly didn't think someone would book right before a hurricane.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. That is still a ridiculous markup. From what I have seen of that hotel, it would maybe be worth 39 Dollars per night, on a good day, without hurricane.

Irma only sustained in the 40’s in that region, might have gusted 70’s. You will know 90 -100 plus. That roar when you reach Triple digits is Creepy as “F” you will definitely know and hear when it’s coming. Thankfully lots of areas have improved underground utilities. But Disney resorts are the best places to stay during a hurricane, they are actually built very well. A lot of people in florida still have “I believe it was 2004” when the state got nailed by 3 hurricanes on the minds. People were without power for a month even in the Orlando area.! That was a crazy time.
I’ve been in several hurricanes when I was on vacation in Florida. They really aren’t that bad if you are in a hotel. I should go back when a hurricane is coming because I love watching stuff like this.
The real dangers of a hurricane are: loss of utilities, airborne debris and the storm surge in coastal areas. I’ve been in a category 5 (Katrina) and the actual storm isn’t a big deal. It’s what the storm picks up and the lack of power and water that kills people.
Your Hurricane Irma video is a masterpiece, IMHO. Not only demonstrates the power of even a Cat 1 or 2 hurricane but the resiliency of Disney properties. Sure, the Contemporary (in the 1970s) is a bit worse for wear but didn't lose windows or power. I'm sorry it was a sad time for you, but you did a good job documenting the storm.
I was there during Hurricane Irma. Was staying at the Best Western at Disney Springs. Ended up extending my stay for 3 days. Luckily, no power loss and I downloaded lots of movies to watch the day before Irma hit. We did loose internet some time over the night and didn't return until the evening the following day. Also, was able to stock up with food from the restaurant there that I kept in my fridge, and was lucky enough to be able to order water from Amazon and delivered to the front desk days before the hurricane hit. You can see some of the hurricane footage from my room on my WDW 2017 video. I think the only thing was the extra day it took for places to reopen after the hurricane.

I have lived in Fort Myers since I was born (97) and have gone through roughly 7 or 8 hurricanes. Irma will always be the most memorable for me because it was my first time going through the eye of the storm. Let me tell you, that is the eeriest feeling ever. For about an hour inside the eye wall, all hell was literally breaking loose outside (was a cat 4 at the time). My wood framed house was swaying in the wind, it literally felt like I was on a boat. Then, out of the blue, over a course of maybe 5 minutes, we were in the eye. It was calm with a light sprinkle and very low winds. It ended up staying like that because there was no southern side of the storm thank God. Definitely the weirdest thing I have ever experienced in my life.
The most entertaining thing I've been to in the Disney complex in Orlando is the secret "junk shop".You need to know a employee to get you into it. It is a surprisingly large shop where everything from old merch, to burnt out landscaping equipment to dining wear all ends up.
we stayed at the arts of animation during irma and it was crazy, it was me, my parents, my grandma, her caretaker, and our two small dogs at the time. i really liked how they handed out like little breakfast packs every morning too
Irma sent both coasts of Florida into a panic as it initially was headed for the east coast, so they began evacuating, but it then took a turn for the west coast and they scrambled to get gas and hotels to evacuate. The eye went right over our neighborhood in Naples. We are still waiting for roof to be replaced (lower priority damage). Very interesting video footage.
I was sheltering in place with my family during Irma in Fort Myers, Florida, about 3-4 hours from Orlando, and further south, along the coast. We lost power for about 2 weeks (rural area), and had to stay at my grandparents' home, which, amazingly enough, never lost power during the storm.
The place is a shit hole. I'm trying to convince my parents to move the hell out of that terrible state. I don't know what they were thinking. "Oh lower cost of living!" Also comes with a significantly lower quality of life.
I was there also for Irma we were staying at Disney's Pop Century. We never lost power so we just stayed in the room and watched tv and played games for 2 days. We had the dining plan so the day before we stocked up on snacks, soda, pizza and sandwiches. A lot of people were at our hotel from Southern Florida who came up and inland to escape the hurricane. There was a few trees down at the resort but it fared pretty well.
Jake, we've had quite the experience that same year with Hurricane Maria, which came exactly 2 weeks later to Puerto Rico (Hurricane Irma was a Cat 5 storm when it almost hit the Island as it veered NW just in time) and it sliced the Island from SE (Yabucoa) to almost NW (just east of Arecibo). Since the wind meters were broken at 100mph / 160kph (!) I estimate my house (Bayamon in Metro San Juan in the Inner N) got 120mph / 190kph sustained winds with 150mph / 240kph gusts (at Yabucoa it was 160mph / 255kph and 190mph / 300kph respectively). To shorten the tale, I didn't had power since Irma (10/6/2017, didn't got it restored for Maria) through 2/15/2018 and Internet on 3/1/2018. Can you imagine Christmas with just the sounds of the generators in the neighborhood? (Holiday music only though battery-powered radios tuned to most stations that were already up from the hurricane). At least we didn't get the massive destruction our compatriots in the SE and the mountain range got.... Maybe someone will put what people in the Bahamas suffered through Dorian in 2019 (Cat 5+ stuck for 2 days in place), which is EVEN WORSE.
During hurricane Irma I lived in Tampa, FL. I worked in a office complex right off interstate 75. Management had us start working from home two days before the storm hit due to the fact that everyone from Key West and Naples were evacuating and heading north on that interstate. It was literally miles of cars heading north less than a day later. Most buildings can't withstand a Cat 5 hurricane.
I remember being at pop century during Irma. It didn’t seem to be that bad, but our room was on the lee side, so we didn’t get as much of the wind. We never lost power, but the WiFi was particularly slow because everyone was on it. I saw the devastation the next day, however. It was my first WDW trip, and we were a little spoiled by the lighter crowds. Compared to this last January when the lines were so long.
Lived in Florida from 2004 and 2008 had my far share of hurricanes they are so beautiful and destructive and something about sitting in the bathroom with my mom and brother with flashlights listening to the emergency broadcast and news from a little radio was the best moments of my life will never understand why I felt that way
12:46 That's insanely surprising... I live in Cape Coral, FL, which is a lot closer to where Irma first made landfall, and we had power back the next morning and internet back within 24 hours of the storm passing.
It's NOT panic to prepare & not do really stupid shit like going to the beach or driving around risking the lives of others who will have to help you if things go south, which they can, & fast. You're so much smarter ;o)
You were there with my boss. She refused to cancel her vacation and drove into Orlando the day before the storm hit. Ended up angrily stuck inside her hotel room with her kids because the park was closed. I thought it was pretty selfish of her to expect the park workers to be out in a cat5 hurricane operating rides for her and her family.
@@dergluckliche4973 Shes such a Disney 'fanatic' that she and her husband often go and leave the kids at home with the grandparents, so i really had no sympathy for her when she pulled this.
I agree I live in Miami, been here all my life and everyone just starts to panic and freak out when as a Floridian you should be prepared before it hits we get hurricanes all the time Im used to it lol but Miami got lucky the eye was supposed to hit us but went left, it decreased in strength too so the only damage to my house was a tree fell on my fence. The worst is probably after the storm, I was one of those people 2 weeks with no power and in Florida heat it is hell.
that whole state is amazing, I finally got to go there and drive around 2018. Flying from 15 below and a deicing in bangor.. snowing. we wondered if it would delay. Towards south florida, I drove by a mobile home park built in the 60s.. the cheap tin huts are so low to the ground, the fence surrounding their little ghetto saves them every freakin' time. I was amazed. anyway, you want to survive a hurricane with power on, you really can...don't even need a billion dollars. i still think one wet 38 inch snow storm in maine is more drama.
During this time my mom and brother and I went to stay at a Holiday Inn. I live streamed the Hurricane at its worse, which was incredibly underwhelming. The entire week after we came home there was no power. If you looked at the state from space, the light that was their made the state look like North Korea from space. My school took off another entire week from when we were supposed to go back. Thus making first period of school for the next month and a half the "quiet" class.
Well, actually the personnel was responsive and accomodating, not in any way timid. I do remember that video - and they did what they needed to do. For gusts of wind you need to visit Northern Polar Circle for being less beware and scared... You'll get used to that. edit - 60mph gusts are normal in February, you just hold up to the external rails of the bus. Respect to the Disney personnel, really!
Avery the Cuban-American , querido Avery... It sounds to me that will be extended at least until just after Easter (4/10/20) or maybe deeper into April. Hope that La Gran Manzana doesn't get too closed in the next month or so and you can live "some kind of normalcy"....
People were panicking about Irma because of how bad Hurricane Harvey was, even though it didn't seem like it would be that bad. Irma happened like a week or two later so you can imagine with people seeing a huge portion of Texas getting flooding that was once in a millenia flooding (right after Texas had already gotten once in a Millenia flooding from a previous weather event), that they would be on edge.
we don’t have hurricanes, but we do get some big storms . Some have been bad enough to uproot large trees. A house near me was crushed when a big tree fell right on it. The diameter of this tree was about 18 inches. Anyway, I am glad you made through and out of there relatively unscathed. The only place I have seen on the east coast is the western part of North Carolina, so I love the videos because I get an idea of what places look like. Curious though, were the flights as bad as you anticipated? The anxiety is worse than the actual experience in most situations; at least that has been my experience. Stay busy and I am looking forward to your next posts.
I was there staying at Saratoga Springs. I changed my flight to get in the day before so that my trip wasn’t delayed. I stayed awake trying to see some of it, but slept pretty much right through it. Couldn’t even hear it in our room.
Amazing footage 👍 Totally empathy regarding losing a gf - myself I went to Australia. Greets from Calgary, where the weather is whatever it damn well pleases 😎
Irma wasn't any fun but far less damaging than Charley in 2004. I can tell you from decades of experience that unless a door or window has a full seal water driven by 70mph plus winds will find a way in regardless of the age of the building. There would also be no practical way for them to have put up temporary walls around the walkways that could safely withstand hurricane force winds.
Myself, husband and 4 kids were in Florida at the time of Irma from the Uk for cancer treatment for one of the kids. Being total hurricane virgins...seeing the state of panic everyone was in, not having a clue if we were in a flood zone or if our apartment would hold out if it hit hard or where to go if there were any problems..we packed up some stuff and headed north. There was literally nowhere to stay tho and we ended up in Birmingham Alabama in the end, after spending a night at a questionable truck stop. Was absolute mayhem tho and no stores or gas stations were letting people use the bathrooms so people were just pooping and peeing everywhere. We were supposed to be at Disney at the same time as you funnily, but ended up going there the following month.

The most entertaining thing I've been to in the Disney complex in Orlando is the secret "junk shop".You need to know a employee to get you into it. It is a surprisingly large shop where everything from old merch, to burnt out landscaping equipment to dining wear all ends up.
I live around NW Florida, and the original was actually the very first video I ever saw from you, been watching since. Was a crazy storm
This was a pretty cool format you did. Hope to see more of these.
I remember watching this video. I have not realized how long it has been since Irma.
Really like "the last word" video style. Also cant wait for my closed for storm poster. Its for sure being framed!!!
we stayed at the arts of animation during irma and it was crazy, it was me, my parents, my grandma, her caretaker, and our two small dogs at the time. i really liked how they handed out like little breakfast packs every morning too
Irma sent both coasts of Florida into a panic as it initially was headed for the east coast, so they began evacuating, but it then took a turn for the west coast and they scrambled to get gas and hotels to evacuate.
I lived in Florida for 6 years. Worst 6 years of my life. Will never go back.
Looking forward to your documentary, Jake.
The place is a shit hole. I'm trying to convince my parents to move the hell out of that terrible state. I don't know what they were thinking. "Oh lower cost of living!" Also comes with a significantly lower quality of life.
This video is what brought me to your channel
Glad you stayed!
Bright Sun Films So am I! You have amazing content!
We love all your videos
I remember being at pop century during Irma. It didn’t seem to be that bad, but our room was on the lee side, so we didn’t get as much of the wind. We never lost power, but the WiFi was particularly slow because everyone was on it. I saw the devastation the next day, however. It was my first WDW trip, and we were a little spoiled by the lighter crowds. Compared to this last January when the lines were so long.
Yeah, it was right in the middle of our 2 week holiday, and the parks were SO quiet afterwards. It was kinda great!
I remember this video! It’s the reason I subbed in 2017, I remember seeing it because I live at Disney and was wondering what the effect was there.
This is like every September in North Carolina. You go to get a carton of milk and all you can find are tampons.
I think the original is the video that turned me on to BSF! I remember watching multiple times.
Lived in Florida from 2004 and 2008 had my far share of hurricanes they are so beautiful and destructive and something about sitting in the bathroom with my mom and brother with flashlights listening to the emergency broadcast and news from a little radio was the best moments of my life will never understand why I felt that way
Great video jake. Cant wait for your documentary!
12:46 That's insanely surprising... I live in Cape Coral, FL, which is a lot closer to where Irma first made landfall, and we had power back the next morning and internet back within 24 hours of the storm passing.
You must have felt your world ending in every way. Great video.
It's NOT panic to prepare & not do really stupid shit like going to the beach or driving around risking the lives of others who will have to help you if things go south, which they can, & fast. You're so much smarter ;o)
I look forward to any new video Jake dont worry you can upload anything and i will watch it.
i remember watching this video in 2017 plus i was staying at the disney resort in florida at the time of Irma
You did a great job on this Jake. This and Nevile are my favorites !
2017: People are so stupid hoarding toilet paper and water
2020 : Lets do it again! ....
loved this video. great job jake!!
God damn old videos after old videos this is making me feel weird but not bad
You were there with my boss. She refused to cancel her vacation and drove into Orlando the day before the storm hit. Ended up angrily stuck inside her hotel room with her kids because the park was closed. I thought it was pretty selfish of her to expect the park workers to be out in a cat5 hurricane operating rides for her and her family.
Sounds like your dumb boss got what she deserved.
@@dergluckliche4973 Shes such a Disney 'fanatic' that she and her husband often go and leave the kids at home with the grandparents, so i really had no sympathy for her when she pulled this.
She sounds like a Class-A pain in the arsenal.
Dr. Toastkrunch fake
@@louisbeerreviews8964 lets see your proof asswipe
Great story jake, thanks for sharing.
i remember also being in WDW at the same time!! i saw you in the parks too the night the parks closed! and then a week later i saw your video!
At this point im so use to hurricanes, but we don't evacuate till it's a category 3, or above. A 2 depending on how close you are to water.
that whole state is amazing, I finally got to go there and drive around 2018.
9:45 I remember watching a transformer blow up from my window. Lost power seconds later...
I live in Florida and this was definitely a crazy time. People in Florida love to horde essential supplies.
That transformer blowing up is awesome
During this time my mom and brother and I went to stay at a Holiday Inn. I live streamed the Hurricane at its worse, which was incredibly underwhelming. The entire week after we came home there was no power. If you looked at the state from space, the light that was their made the state look like North Korea from space. My school took off another entire week from when we were supposed to go back. Thus making first period of school for the next month and a half the "quiet" class.
You drop this the day every where went into lockdown
Well, actually the personnel was responsive and accomodating, not in any way timid. I do remember that video - and they did what they needed to do.
For gusts of wind you need to visit Northern Polar Circle for being less beware and scared... You'll get used to that.
edit - 60mph gusts are normal in February, you just hold up to the external rails of the bus.
Respect to the Disney personnel, really!
Omg I met a love of my life that exact time period
Closed for Irma, Dorian, and now it will be closed until the end of the month for the virus. Wow. Irma was an interesting time for the parks
Woooohooooo. I LOVE new videos!!! Thx BSF!!!
we don’t have hurricanes, but we do get some big storms .
I loved that Disney in Irma vid great
As a Floridian, I hereby recognize you as Floridian as well. Welcome to our yearly panic period lol.
I was there at the time, from AZ, I was the last flight out of Orlando international that Saturday.
Haven't been this early since I was born
0:30 damn, that looks like a city bus like we have here in Europe except those seats are huge.
I was in Miami during hurricane Irma. The entire city was a ghost town, it felt so eerie.
Durring Irma, in deltona, we lost power for two weeks. It was really hot inside and sleeping was difficult
I used to work at the contemporary and bay lake tower as a lifeguard and getting ready for storms and hurricanes is crazy. I have many insane stories 😂
Flying for the time is both a thrill and a terrifying experience at the same time.
Jake’s misfortune brought us a new video. Thank you for your sacrifice.
When you walked across that bridge walkway, I legit held on to my bed.
The Irma Facebook memes that we Floridians made were top notch
