      Never got taught how to turn a radiator off so I'm thankful through this video I now know how to turn a radiator off, previously painted my radiator to make it look like brand new but didn't want the heating to effect it since I needed to dry a few tea towels anywho it successfully worked and the radiator is completely off so thankyou so much.

  • @ensigner5619
    @ensigner5619 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to explain even simple things! - In terms of the different valves, I figured out that all my radiators have at the bottom on one side a simple (non-thermostatic) manual valve and on the other side a Lockshield valve, and on the top one bleeding valve. Now, when draining the central heating system, do I need to fully open all manual and Lockshield valves right from the start, and after a while also open all bleeding valves? - Referring to Lockshield valves, What is their function? Do they simply control how much water exits the radiator? When do they need to be fully closed? If I close them, would then the next radiator down the line not get any hot water? Your answers would help me a great deal, including to figuring out how the three radiators upstairs and the three downstairs in my home are connected to one another.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you drain the central heating make sure the valves are fully open and after draining for about 10 minutes go around all the radiators and open the bleed valves. Lockshield valves are used to govern down radiators so that you can balance your heating system, so that each radiator gets an even amount of heat. If you close a lockshield valve down then that radiator will not get hot, but of course there would be more heat for the other radiators . Generally the upstairs radiators are just one turn on the lockshields, and fully open downstairs, as the upstairs radiators always steal the most heat from the boiler.

    PRAISE THE LORD, I'm not a religious person but think you've been sent from heaven. Literally could have saved my life and my pets and plants with this thankyou!!
    The first two I've always been use to and understand how to use them, but the last one I kept turning then when I took it off was worried I'd bleed it or something. Will go and buy some pliers, after it being freezing here and sleeping with the heat on and two sets of blankets we've suddenly been hit by a heatwave, windows open, air conditioning, fan and still feeling like may pass out as the heating is on timers in my tiny flat and comes on in 4 hour blocks.
    Just wondering if anyone happens to read this and know...if I shut it off will it effect the other people's flats in my building, the ground floor people have the gas boiler for all of us. We don't have thermostats or anything we all share the same heating in the entire building (it's an old building) also if I have to turn it off entirely as the dial is just a cap...will it start up okay again when it gets colder? If it suddenly gets cold in April again it's fine to put it back on?
    I'm worried about getting air in it or bubbles and disrupting the heating in the rest of the building. Thankyou and godbless you for this video!!

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dont worry Scarlet you can turn the valves on and off as much as you like to suit the outside temp, you will not effect any one else and you will not get air bubbles or any thing like that. If it gets colder just turn the valve back on and it will heat up again, if it gets hot just turn it off again.

    Sorry Sir, I just have another question and I couldn't find the answer in the videos. In my house the radiators have two valves (one on each side) exactly the same as the last one you are showing there were you need to remove the cap, but there's no difference between them so I don't know if I should open both of them and how I can balance the central heating with the two. Thank you so much in advance!

    Hi Al, can you give me some advice? I have a radiator with an ordinary turn valve (not thermostatic) and a lock shield valve at the other end. Since I moved into my house I have been unable to turn it off, the turn valve turns all the way off as marked on the top but the radiator stays just as hot. Its in my kitchen so I dont really need it on a lot of the time. Can you suggest what I can do to solve it. Many thanks for the vids.

      Try turning the other valve off the locksheild one, as it does not matter which end you turn off.

    Hi, can the ordinary manual turn valves be set to a lower temperature if they are partially turned down? Or do they have to be fully on or fully off? Thanks

      No either full on or off.

    Ok so it's clockwise to turn OFF but which value do you turn? The one on the left or the one on the right or both?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not matter which one they will both turn the rad off. Just use either the thumbwheel valve or the thermostatic valve if you have one.

  • @SherlockSparrow
    @SherlockSparrow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question! The numbered end of my rad is broken and is on what I assume is full. The other end has a basic turn valve with no numbers. If I turn it half way will it turn the radiator down or is it just a simple on or off situation now? If I turn it off fully will it not upset any other radiator in the house? Thanks!

      No they are just different plastic tops. Turn ones or plastic domes. You just need to buy a plastic top.

    Sir, I have a question regarding the radiator valve, it looks like the second one in the video and after turning it off as you suggested, it still seems to be on. Could I possibly contact you for information about it with pictures of the valve.

It wouldn't turn at all which suggested it was fully on. I tried turning anti clockwise and it turned. Why isnt the heating getting hot then?at most it gets lukewarm at the top of it.. 😳

    • @dereton33

      If you want to turn the lock shield one on, then lift away the cap and use a pair of pliers twisting anticlockwise until it stops. If it is the rad valve then just turn it anticlockwise.

    Have only seen the valves with numbers on before this, so was admittedly thrown by current radiator, especially as said valve was incredibly stiff - just knowing which way to turn it made all the difference!!

    You might also mention that once warm weather returns and the heating system is turned off for the season, you should open the valves back up half way so the washer inside the valve doesn't get stuck in the off position during the off season, and so the valve will work properly again next year.

    Hi, thank you for this video! I have the first type of valve in the video but mine are on the top left corner of the radiator. They are on in funky ways so the numbers don't align! I'm wondering: Does clockwise always = off? I noticed if I turn clockwise the whole valve/the screw underneath it lowers, versus if I turn it counterclockwise the valve/screw rise. I presume this is is on / off somehow? Need to figure out which is which!

    Thank you! Out of several video's, you are the first one to just say clockwise off - counter clockwise on. I have ones that can't be seen where the off is located. It appears it stops on 1 and 8. Other's have a little square thingy on the bottom with no numbers. I'm either freezing or have steam pissssing out of them.
