The more I use this delay, the more I like it! Yes, I know - I am a sucker for a delay, however, there are some nice features to this unit. Also, sorry about the missing label for the 12th delay model demo. That's the "SFX" model. Let me know what you think!!
+Chords Of Orion I agree! It's a very addicting pedal with a seemingly endless list of possibilities. The more I learn how to use it, the more I like it!
+Chords of Orion Great overview! Just switched to this pedal a couple days ago and sweet Jesus, this is such a dramatic improvement over the DD-20. I don't know how long it'll take me to explore everything this piece is capable of...in the meantime, fellow atmospheric guitarists, perhaps we ought to play a show together? :) michaelgarfield.net/p/musician.html
First day with this pedal, its a beast! The wave modulation options open up vast amounts of sonic exploration. Using it with synths and various mic’d acoustic instruments. If your into lfo’s and creating your own textures, highly recommended. I hate menu diving, but I think boss did a great job here, rather intuitive and quite a smooth operation once you getthe hang of it. Thx for your work👍🏼
It's a real testiment to how good this is.....sitting in my house in 2020 and waiting delivery of mine, can't waith to hook it up to my syths...........and yes, I had to pay £25 for a power supply!
Great review - just ordered one partially on the strength of this video. BTW the groove you got going at 9:30 was really nice - I'm gonna borrow that if you don't mind. Cheers.
Hey Bill, how the heck do you get 10 seconds of tape delay on the DD-500? The manual is sorely lacking and I can only get 5 seconds with the time/value knob.. Thanks!
Hey Ed! I plugged in my DD-500 last night and sure enough I can now only get 5 seconds out of the delay types that used to provide 10 seconds of delay time. I did the version 2 update several months ago and never thought to check. I have a support email into BOSS asking about this, and if I do not hear back soon, will reach out to my BOSS contact. Will write back here when I get more information.
Well here's a situation where I can give back...my Sweetwater rep told me that after the update it's the "mix" parameter that you change from "A/B" (as opposed to A+B) that now gives you the extra 5 seconds (even he had to contact Roland!). Crazy huh? Hope that helps. It's either under system or patch but I got it working last night. I double check what heading it's under when I fire it up today. Great unit though. Super helpful channel Bill! Cheers!
+Joel Mora The tap rate depends on the patch and also the delay sub-division when something like a dotted eighth pattern is used. So as I switched patches for the different delay types, the tap rate changed. At least, that is what I think you are seeing.
Dear Bill, I need a easy to use and easy to program delay pedal, just to have 2290 type of clean , digital delay, with a easy to see visual display, with ability to access and program 1, Delay Time 2. Tone 3. Feedback and 4. Mix ( level) into each preset. I want minimum of 4 presets, and i need to be able to access the presets easily in a live context, via the delay pedal's footswitch preferably. Have you got a recommendation for me please ? I have done my best to find one myself that isn't really deep and complicated. For the desired use i only need to program in the 1. delay time of each preset in Milliseconds, from 0- 3,000 milliseconds, 2. The Tone of the delay ( from bright to dark ) 3. Feedback ( the amount of repeats from 1-10 ) and 4. Mix ( or delay level ). Fairly simple requirements , but all i need for live use. I need theses 4 parameters, and i need to be able to easily access the presets via the pedals footswitch, or at worst, via a single midi switch ( for scrolling through the presets only ). Thanks for your help, I've been going nuts trying to find something , thought the Boss DD-500 might do the trick, so here i am. The others, I've found, but seem too deep and complicated and have features i don't need are the Timeline, and the FT-2Y . I believe the DD-500 has a SDE-3000 delay sound available, that is much like the 2290, a clean digital delay. thankyou for your help, cheers
I enjoyed this demo video to the point where I've just gone and bought one ! One request though ; would you consider doing a 'part 2' exploring the 'Mode' knob and any other interesting hidden gems ?
Oh I wasn't asking for a video comparison but if you want to that would be cool! :) I was thinking more of just your overall opinion of this versus the Strymon. I'm interested in their differences and similarities.
+Brian Bowersox Ah. Gotcha. Here are a few observations about the 2 units: 1. Both are great, and either delay could serve as a primary delay, given the delay types and flexibility of settings. 2. The Timeline has a more "pristine" sound to the delays, the DD-500 a "warmer" sound. I suspect that the Timeline tends to emphasize the tone a little more in the 5-8K range. the upshot is that the Strymon has a Strymon sound and the Boss, a Boss sound. 3. The Timeline is more intrinsically stereo. There are some models in the DD-500 that are strictly mono. 4. The Timeline has a "smear" control on many of the delay types, which softens the attacks of the delay repeats. The DD-500 does not. 5. The DD-500 has a better reverse and in some ways a more usable swell delay type than the Timeline. 6. The DD-500 Tera-echo is pretty awesome! 7. Love the DD-500 freeze function. 8. The DD-500 is $150 USD cheaper!
Thanks! That's great. I have been tempted by the Boss because of the price difference. I could use the extra money from selling my Timeline to put towards a Pitchfork. ha
+GNeuman Ya know, that's true. I changed presets while creating the video by using the bank switch feature, which does not change the mode knob. Good catch and worth mentioning for clarification.
thank you for your reply. I cannot choose only one among "dig", "DD-500", and "delay llama supreme". If you have chance to play delay llama supreme, could you also play it please on this channel?
+hana tavi Making decisions is difficult sometimes! If I do get a chance to play the Llama Supreme, I will try to do a video of it. Thanks for commenting!
While you explain a lot other things, there's only shown 'Bank 6' on the display. Apart from that it's a very good review. Could you please say something regarding maximal delay times of the all the different modes. Can't find anything about that in the manual or elsewhere. Thanks a lot.
Hi Bill, very informative review. I’m actually a keyboardist rather than a guitarist and I want to explore Frippertronics. I’m debating whether to buy a Boss DD500 or a Ditto x4 and I’ve seen you using both in that context. I’m struggling to decide which way to go. I already using a Timeline and a Big Sky as well as some outboard gear. Do you have any advice about the relative merits of the two units? Thanks
Since you have a Timeline already, I would probably suggest the Ditto X4 for loop/Frippertronics types of effects unless you are really interested in the tape delay effect. In that case I: would suggest the Strymon El Capitan as it can do 20 seconds "tape loops".
Chords Of Orion Hi Bill, Thanks for getting back to me. One question, offhand do you know if the decay mode on the Ditto x4 works when the loop is in play mode? Or does it only function in record and overdub? It’s a bit of a dealbreaker for me. Thanks again.
@@rtl8972 The decay mode on the Ditto x4 only works when you are overdubbing. If you switch to playback only, the volume will remain constant at whatever it last was.
+Daniel Tomlinson I have not tried it as of this writing, but a quick look into the user manual would seem to indicate that you could do this. In particular, I would look at the Pattern delay mode, which gives you 16 delays that stack on each other, or the Dual mode, which gives you 2 independent delays that can be combined in series or in parallel.
Great review. Your videos are inspiring me to get back into Frippertronics. You've had the dd-500 for a while now, how do you like it compared to your other top delay pedals at this point?
+pythonflying I still like it quite a bit. For me, it is better as a specialty delay, something I don't use all the time. I think that the my 2 Strymon pedals are better for that, in particular, the DIG. But the DD-500 does some things that the others do not, such as the TeraEcho, and those are the types of things that I tend to focus on. Also, I really like the freeze function, which neither the Timeline or the Triple Delay have. And then there's the 10 seconds of delay... :-)
@@chordsoforion 10 seconds of delay seems good enough for frippertronics/soundscapes. But can you take off your foot from the footswitch while freezing it? Or does it just freeze when holding it down? If you connect a vol pedal or expression pedal to it, it sure can be routed so that when the exp pedal is down/toe position, the DD-500 will think or be fooled into that you're holding the foot still on the switch... or no?
+hana tavi I think that the answer depends on what you want to do with a delay. If you are looking for an all round delay that can do a bit of everything then the DD-500 wins because the DIG does not have all the delay models and detailed parameters of the DD-500. If you want to focus more on U2-style patterned delays, and just want to turn a few knobs to get your sound, then the DIG wins, no question.
+Nathan Shafer (EchoEchoGuy) Not a ton of time, but there are 3 that I am working on right now: Slow Attack and Reverse patches for lead playing, and a "Frippertronics" patch using an 8-10 second delay.
hey man , I know im quite late in this vid, but now that the dd500 has the global tap tempoish HOLD TEMPO feature, it has become relevant, and I want to know what would you choose for a starter ambient setup? This, the Source Audio Nemesis or the Capistan/Dig ?
Tough call. The DD-500 can do much longer delays than the Nemesis/Capistan/DIG, so if that is something you are looking for, then the choice is clear. And it has a built in looper. If long delays and loopers are not so critical to you then I would probably favor the Nemesis for a starter ambient setup. Super easy to use, and it sounds great.
Hey , Thanks! I plan on pairing it with an Immerse and a Ditto X4 too (and your DIG / Immerse vids are amazing) but I might have to wait until I have them all in store and try them all out
Chords Of Orion HIhi obvious dry answer,You are a very gifted guy with a good sense of humor!Your uploads really blow my senses man, keep rocking the transits!
It does has some nice features, but I also find so many of these newer delays today have unwanted noise that just drives me nuts that I would not want in my songs. I guess I just like being able to control every note I play. I guess I would really have to sit down with this pedal myself in a room and test its sound on an amp to see for myself. Because I really like delays to fatten up my sound barely being noticable most of the time with minimal trails. That's just me. Nice demo though. I'm glad people do them before I rush out and spend money on something I might not like since I live 100 miles from the nearest city now.
How true! Initially, I was about to return the DD500 I had just bought. The user interface appears too awkward and entirely illogical to me. The menu structure comes in even worse than the one of Eventide H9 (you _know_ what I mean). The manual keeps scratching on the surface without giving any clue how the whole system actually works. There are lots of details which are revealed just weeks or months later some time - this applies e.g. for the use of both delays per bank simultaneously - even then, there is no hint about how to save the bank behaviour… etc. The user interface must have been designed by developers who had been fired at Microsoft because of lack of user-friendliness. :-P Or by drunken Linux freaks, which may be about the same. But hey, what a sound, what possibilities this Boss box offers! The longer I am using it, the more I enjoy it - although I am still highly dissatisfied by Boss' dull user interface and useless manual. For the record: I am using this "desktop pedal" usually with mono synths (Moog Mother 32, Moog DFAM, Subharmonicon), which instantly expands the sonic possibility of those little Moog beasts.
To keep it simple - if "smear" settings are critical for one's delays, the Timeline. If one must have 10 second delays, the DD-500. If neither of those aspects is critical, then check out the overall tone. There is a definite "Boss" sound, and a definite "Strymon" sound. A preference for one over the other will likely drive a decision between the 2 pedals. Also, the Boss is cheaper, which may be a factor too.
Loved your video. I got myself a DD500 but there seems to be one thing missing...The ping pong effect which to me is important to get a true stereo effect. Presets don't come in stereo and one has to set direct and effect manually left and right...which is a bummer. And again, that's not something that seems to suit me. The timeline does it pretty well I think.
+Velissaris Gautier You are correct in that the Timeline is waaay more stereo focused than the DD-500. I am tending to use the DD-500 for specific delays and then follow it with the Timeline or DIG to create the full stereo bed.

And of course in dual mode you can hard pan each delay, if I recall well.
