    Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England are the 4 nations that have won a rugby world cup. France have been runners up 3 times, then you have Ireland, Wales, Scotland in the next tier followed by Italy, Argentina, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Japan, Canada and the USA which amazingly has quite a lot of clubs and players registered. Also remember that Australia, New Zealand and England also have a significant Rugby League base and both codes have poached from each other.

    The US is ranked 17th in the world. They lost this weekend to Uruguay which dropped them from 16th. It was also a pretty important match as it was a World Cup qualifying match. Now the US is in a pretty precarious position and has to beat Chile to qualify for the World Cup in 2023. Also, the history of the American Football name actually derives from Rugby/Football(Soccer). Not because kicking was more integral earlier in the history of the game. Football was used in the UK as a generic term for a number of similar games played across the country in the 17 and 1800's. However, in the mid 1800's, as industrialization began and travel became easier, teams from across the UK began playing each other. When the did, they found that they all had slightly different rules for the same game and would have to agree on the rules before they played. This caused issues and created the drive to codify and create the first official rule book to the game. The game of FOOTBALL. During this period in the mid 1800's, the game was now rapidly changing to ensure that the rules were consistent across the country. However, some rules were very popular among large groups and in certain areas and when the FA (Football Association, the UK governing body of the sport you may know as soccer) sought to remove these rules, they objected and began the formation of their own governing body that would keep the rules of their style of Football. These rules followed the Rugby Football style of the game. They decided to form the RFU (Rugby Football Union). This also is how American Football got the name Football. Football was Football, Rugby Football was the Rugby style of Football and American Football was the American style of Football. The only difference between Rugby and American Football is that Rugby was directly competing against Soccer, this meant that the local population needed a way to differentiate the 2 sports. They couldn't both be Football. Soccer was/is more popular than Rugby in the UK and over time the naming shifted to just calling Football, football and Rugby Football, Rugby. Rugby has also over time looked to distance itself from the Football name. The international governing body (Think like FIFA) used to be called IRFB (International Rugby Football Board). Over time they renamed themselves the IRB (International Rugby Board) and now they are called World Rugby in order to distance themselves from the Football name. In the US however, American Football didn't have this competition so American Football just became Football. Anyway, long history essay over... The more you know.

    • @callumscott953
      @callumscott953 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a side note: Rugby will still sometimes be called Football or Footy by older people or in countries where Rugby is more popular than soccer like New Zealand, the pacific islands or Australia (In Australia its often used interchangeably between Rugby Union, Rugby League and Aussie Rules Football. Though Rugby normally means Rugby Union, League normally means Rugby League and Football/Footy normally means Aussie Rules Football).

  • @williamcharleson1994

    The primary reason rugby and soccer haven't taken off like their American rivals is is due to the fact it isn't as commercially viable. NFL and NBL are almost designed around maximising sponsorship appeal and revenue, whereas with 40 minutes of near nonstop play in rugby just... doesn't have the space for a metric tonne of ads. It's a shame, but unfortunately a deciding factor.

    All forms of football (including soccer) are called football because they are played on foot, as opposed to horseback. Not because, like most people think, you kick the ball with your feet. It was in fact an English class divide - upper class sports were played on horseback, working class sports were played on foot.

    • @chuckyboy6977
      @chuckyboy6977 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then why was Association football first played by gentlemen first, it was a game for the upper classes first then the common man started to play. The game was 100% amateur at first, then the common man players were allowed to be paid as the upper class players didn’t have to work in a mill for 12 hours then practice or go on and play a full 90min game.

    • @RichardGadsden
      @RichardGadsden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chuckyboy6977 Association football was organised by gentlemen first, but it had been played by the common man without a formal organisation long before the gentlemen started organising it.
      The common man in 1800 or whatever was still playing the local variety of football - what we'd now call village football or Shrovetide football.
      Public schools each organised their own ball game (Eton still plays the Eton Wall Game and the Eton Field Game rather than association or rugby football, others play according to FA or RFU rules today); the original football rules were the Cambridge rules, drawn up by students at the University of Cambridge as a compromise set so that teams of former students from each school could play against each other - which is why teams like "Old Harrovians" were some of the leading teams of association football in the very early days.
      Later on, the post-university clubs got together to form the Football Association (1863). Old Rugbeians, though, found that the Cambridge Rules, which became the FA Rules, were too far from the game they played at school - the key difference at the time not being handling (early FA rules allowed handling the ball), but running forward with the ball in hand, which was not allowed under the FA (after catching the ball, you had to stand still, like making a mark in rugby). They founded the Rugby Football Union in 1870 - several teams had declined to join the FA from the start and they were founder members of the RFU.
      Both games quickly became popular with the working class in the newly-industrial towns of the north (the old village football games had not carried well into urbanisation) and those teams started unofficially paying players, resulting in a huge confrontation between several successful near-professional clubs and the FA which still had amateurism rules. The FA eventually gave way in 1885 and allowed professionalism. Within three years, there's a professional Football League in the north, and within four more there's a second division.
      In rugby, the RFU also had strict amateurism rules, and similarly had northern clubs paying players under the table. After watching what had happened in association football, they resisted much more firmly, and the northern teams left the RFU to operate a professional league modelled after the Football League - this evolved into the separate sport of rugby league. The RFU and then IRFB/IRB applied the same strict amateurism rules for many years - until making the game "open" in 1995.

Either way, most football codes (rugby, league, gridiron, Gaelic, etc) are still called football because, despite their evolution and growth from what they might have looked like originally, they all still grew from football.

    Hi Blake. The growth of modern day, professional Rugby in the USA will be "controlled" by the availability of MONEY. There have been two or three attempts to get a Professional League of Rugby established. Often by different bodies that want to control and "own" the game. Gate attendance alone doesn't generate enough funds to run a team. Ultimately it is the Media/TV Sporting channels that will provide the income and help generate corporate sponsorship that will back individual teams and the National Organisation. All this takes time and initial seed money to get established.
    One way interest has been used is to promote the Rugby 7's game. Now being an Olympic sport it gets certain funding. Plus, the "fun" aspects of the game for spectators is heavily promoted. Drinking, dressing up in costumes and having two or three days of games, all contribute to a sporting festival.
    Plus, women's involvement as players. The US Men's and Women's 7's teams have quickly developed a good reputation.
    Also, Rugby both 7's and 15's, is also an International game. Unlike American Football. So there are huge opportunities to represent your country in international competitions, tours and a World Cup. (Plus Olympics for 7's.) As sponsorship increases, the game will grow.
    More and more tournaments like Six Nations and Tri/Quad Nations (Southern Hemisphere) plus the European leagues and Super Rugby from down under are getting aired on the Sports channels in the USA.
    The USA has a massive amount of talent available. Only a very small percentage get to play in the top American Football teams. Huge numbers are still available for Rugby. Cheers mate.

    If Rugby becomes big in the states it will only be if there is a big change in the way they play the game. Commercial interests play a big part in how a game is played in the states. Tennis with its changeovers, and American football with its many breaks provide plenty of opportunities for advertisers. Basketball doesn't, so they introduced time outs, and it seems to me rugby would have to do the same thing as there are very few natural breaks to slip in ads. Even line outs would not naturally provide that opportunity as sometimes a quick line out can be taken and nobody would want to come back from a break to find that a try has been scored.
    The states could and should be a major player in a major international sport, but will they if for the first few years they'd have to settle for second best?

    But I would like to see more nations become competitive at the game and its audience to spread & grow, wether that nation is the USA or not.
    I will say: I don't believe that the USA would dominate at the sport if they got good at it because of "athleticism of African Americans" or whatever it was that I've seen American football fans have been saying online to me for over 20 years. England and France both have a fair % of its population now with West African & Caribbean heritage and they've hardly led them to dominate in Rugby. Rugby is more about tactics, technique & skills (that take years to master) and endurance than burst athleticism like how it seems in American football and basketball. And the USA doesn't exactly completely dominate Basketball internationally. Nor is the USA dominant in either Baseball nor Ice Hockey.
    I think the USA could definitely become among the top teams though.

    Want to tell you, South Africa and New Zealand are small countries and along with England, Wales and France all produce some fine Rugby teams. The USA has the people, the money and the motivation. With training and some marketing there is no reason as to why the USA should become world champs. No reason it should not happen. I lived in the USA while at varsity and although I watched football, Rugby is harder and faster, and much more exciting in my opinion. Rugby will take over the USA once they start winning more.

    US is going in the right directions, but please do not set your expectations on the US - NZ game. NZ are currently number 1 or 2 and especially against weaker teams (I would say more then 4 places below them in the ranking) could easily put 30-50 points against them.
    I think it will be a good game to watch especially to see NZ in action. They play beautiful rugby, and are probably the world most entertaining side to watch in terms of skill. Unfortunately that is not so nice sometimes to be on the receiving end of that. So I would see US ending with less then 20-30 points against NZ as a win for US.

    I have noticed recently that what you call a "touchdown" consists of a player walking across the opposition's back line and standing there until a quarterback throws the ball to him and the moment he catches it everyone goes crazy because the fact that one of his feet is over the line means that a "touchdown" has happened. No doubt this rule change was invented to make the game be played a little "faster"

    • @BlakeHC

It will energise the world game. If done properly it will attract internarional players which in turn will have their skills passed onto the US. @@bronzemen34 Again, no.... This is not the case at all. I explained this to Blake on another video, the reality is actually much more complicated (and more interesting).
      Rugby didn't evolve out of football/soccer, it WAS football. Or rather it was one kind of football. Rugby and soccer are both 'sister sports' that evolved, at the same time, out of a myriad of different football rules that were played at England's elite schools in the 19th century. The football played at Rugby School was one of these, but in addition there was Harrow football, Winchester football, the Eton field game and many many many more besides. They all had different rules about carrying the ball, methods of moving the ball, scoring and so on. Some resembled modern soccer a little bit more than others, though they were still a very very far cry from it...but others favoured a rougher, carrying based game (mainly Rugby School and it's followers). Yet they were all "football". These school games also had influence beyond that in the Sheffield Rules of 1858 (which, again, was not soccer).
      It was a desire to create compromise rules so that different schools could play each other, as well as ex-pupils of different schools wanting to play after they left school, that resulted in the development of Rugby Football and Association Football. This was the direct motivation for the formation of the Football Association. However, the original rules of the FA look nothing like modern soccer either.... There was a big debate between those clubs and individuals who favoured the more robust Rugby School rules, and those who favoured rules which limited carrying the ball (such as Eton). Among the founding members of the FA for instance was Blackheath, which would later become a famous Rugby club. The point is that this hard distinction only emerged later on.
      Only after the exponents of rugby style rules lost the debate did they decide to breakaway from the FA, eventually founding their own Rugby Football Union a few years later. It's not like - as many people mistakenly think - that there was "football" recognizable as modern soccer going back to the 19th century, and that Rugby then broke off from it. Rather all the modern codes evolved out of a sort of this "primordial soup" of different football games and this myriad of different rules. It was a long process for them to arrive at the modern sports today.
