Hi Billy, thank you for watching. I really care about those of us who still buy and cherish physical media. I want to support the bands and labels that still release CDs and vinyl but I have to be honest and truthful and this release falls short of what music fans are looking for, especially at this price. Phil
Great review. I agree with all said - a bit of a missed opportunity by the record company responsible. However, the music? Slade could easily hold their own with any other live band of the day. The musicianship is second to none, and of course - the songs. They could rock in a blues style like Zepplin (shorter songs and less self-indulgent), they had the hooks and tunes of classic pop/rock (thinking the Stones here) but also the raucousness of pub rock, and the daft, over the top glam elements, and in Holder and Lee, two great songwriters. Saw them only once, in 1983, and having been a fan for ten years, it really was my Proustian moment. Since then, I have got the cd's with the bonus tracks and I listen to them regularly, and believe me, their albums sound great and highlight just how good they were beyond the 45 format. Are they overlooked - yes! The singles that charted maybe not, but the classic studio albums from 1972 - 1977 and beyond especially.
Hi Tony, thank you for watching and sharing your memories about Slade. As you say the music is beyond reproach and still sounds as exciting now as it ever did! Phil :)
Good morning Phil Greetings from Western Australia Slade need a HUGE box set containing the hits and all the live concerts and a thick lp sized hard back book. I would live on beans to afford that.
If you were or are a Slade fanatic you will know the dates, the best live band to ever walk on a stage, and i have seen every big band since the late 60s, no band comes close to the mighty Slade Live.
This will be the THIRD issue of Slade Alive in less that 12 months from BMG, Slade Alive Splatter Vinyl, Slade Alive CD 'Mediabook' and now this one. BMG are using Slade fans as Cash Cows. The majority of hard core Slade fans have already got the New Vic Concert (BBC) which is freely available, if you know where to look elsewhere, they've already got Slade Alive umpteen times, they've got at least 3 copies of Slade On Stage. The Reading (BBC) set is also freely available on BBC Sounds. As for the Hucknall set, the original track listing press release stated it was the June 1980 gig recorded by Radio Trent, when in fact it is the December 1980 gig also recorded by Radio Trent. The Hucknall set was only included to entice people into buying this box set. If you think this release is pathetic, wait until you see what else is in the pipeline, more splatter vinyl, more of the same old same old. What Slade fans want and have been crying out for years for, is a fully comprehensive career defining DVD of the promos, the best of the TV performances and more importantly their 'live' action that was caught on film all over the world. The last DVD issued in 2007 (the very best of Slade) only sold due to the inclusion of the Granada TV 1972 Set of Six show. 10 years ago I put together Slade night for BBC FOUR, Slade at the BBC has been watched by an estimated 5 million viewers over 8 showings. There has been no fan involvement/consultation in this rubbish box set, it has been done soley to collect a load of profit for BMG from already hard pressed Slade fans. Even the BMG official Slade Social Media pages are being run by (well it seems) by inexperienced people, who can't even spell Coz & Noize correctly (Noddy Holders spelling) Their official Slade TH-cam Channel th-cam.com/users/SladeOfficialBandvideos is also a load of old cobblers, there is actually no footage of Slade on it, it's full of Graphic Equalizers, log fires and bleedin Christmas Trees FFS. We Slade fans are over 60 years old, not 6, yet they had somebody do a cartoon version of the band for Merry Xmas Everybody, which frankly the local Junior School could have done better th-cam.com/video/PTslBTBl1X8/w-d-xo.html I've been a Slade nut since 1970, 52 years ago, before they were even chart stars, but I haven't bought anything for years because I refuse to be ripped off. Like the reviewer says Demon & Cherry Red 'know their onions' and so did Union Square Music/Salvo when they began releasing stuff from the Slade Back Catalogue.
Hi thank you for watching and for your very informative and useful comment. It is very important to me that I am open and honest in my reviews. I was so looking forward to this but the physical presentation is just as important to fans and collectors otherwise we would be all streaming! This is such a wasted opportunity and the price suggests you get way more than you do. Phil
I think you have done an excellent review and the main point is that the music is great. Your comments about things like the quality of packaging are valid as are things like the missing Slade Alive Vol 2. Some good.tracks found on there. Finally, turning to the Hucknall and Linby Miner's Welfare, I was there! The venue had a reputation for booking quality rock bands. I don't know the capacity of the venue but the stage had plenty of space and the hall was full. It was a respectable gig and the music was good. Some photos of the crowd and the band would have been nice though.
Hi Neil, thank you for watching. I wanted to try and get the balance right with this review as I know Slade fans will simply want it regardless. The music is great, the execution by BMG could have been better. Phil
Nice video Phil, like yourself I really like Slade and feel/share your pain when a release like this falls a little short. I would have considered purchasing if there was an informative booklet with interviews with the band and of course everything dated correctly but as it is I won`t. But...and it`s a big but, for anyone who doesn`t have any Slade live material the content is first class (I have three fifths of these live recordings on earlier releases)as Slade sound even more bombastic live than they do in the studio!
Hi Phil thanks for the review. Surprised you didn't mention the fact that there was the Slade live double cd. Which did include Slade alive vol. 2. Will have to wait on box set to drop in price to justify 2 live CDs. Recently bought 3 out of 4 splatter discs as they dropped big time in price. Thanks again for all your great videos.
Lots I could say,but just like to (possibly) answer people’s astonishment at Slade Alive Vol 2 being omitted. My guess(educated guess nonetheless) is that Vol2 is a somewhat “laidback “ effort in comparison to these gigs. They all have one thing in common and that is gutsy, screaming, rowdy, raucous & unbelievably atmospheric, regardless of year, whilst(and I know some still think V2 is great) I’ve never really felt the same excitement throughout the whole of vol 2! I get this sensation that the recording in V2 is taken from a quite disadvantaged point, neither catching the wild musical elements nor Holder’s worldly famous cutthroat vocals! Some diehards say it’s not even a real gig & that it’s tarted up,edited & put together! I can’t go there, but I hope you see my point, these 5 discs stand out as absolute blasters , go figure! Nice review Phil, cheers pal.
Hi Mark, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. The Box Set seems to be selling well and the music is timeless and as you say captures Slade in their element! Phil
Noddy Holder was very much an inspiration for many British punk/new wave bands in the late 1970s. His band Slade was loved immensely in Britain and Europe, especially between 1972 to 1976. But sadly ,in Malaysia there wasn't a big following here. I still love Far,Far Away greatly until today. Many American 1980s glam metal bands too cite them as an influence. This box set is really cool.
As soon as this was released I got my copy in the mail and couldn’t stop playing it, even though I’ve already got plenty of copies of Slade Alive and On Stage it was good to hear them again, they sound as fresh as ever, then I put on The New Vic Theatre and it is just fantastic, it’s great to hear the songs from Slade In Flame, and The Bangin’ Man, Just A Little Bit and Thanks For The Memory are fantastic and then Raining In My Champagne with all the middle bit is just brilliant. The Reading show is just Legendary (Luv it). And the real surprise for me was Hucknall as I had never hear this before, not even on bootleg. It was odd though hearing Nod say Buck Ya instead of Fuck Ya at the start of Dizzy Mamma, but never the less the whole show is brilliant, Night Starvation, Let Me Love Into Ya just to mention a few are amazing, I hope this C.D. paves the way for more like this, it would be great to have a proper copy of the Apollo Theatre Glasgow show in 1982.
Hi Phil, thank you for watching and sharing your love of Slade and giving such an enthusiastic review of this box set. I also hope it does well enough so there is a possible follow up! Phil
Hi Phil, really great review, is there any chance BMG can be made aware of all the faults with this Box Set so they can retract it before it's released and fix the problems, also replace Slade On Stage with "Slade Live At The Glasgow Apollo 1982" and instead of Slade Alive, replace it with another historical "Live Slade Show" and then release it at an affordable price?
Hi Phil, thank you for watching. The problem with anything like this is the product has already been manufactured and distributed. I think the best thing to hope for is the price drops by about 50%. The music is great, the band fantastic but the execution in putting this together for the fans is poorly lacking. Phil
Yes another good review. As you say the live music on the CDs is worthy of such a release but unfortunately the record company here have scored a major home goal. Most Slade fans will already have a few of the CDs in this set anyway and won't consider this hike in the pre-order price that Amazon and other retailers have placed on this set. The booklet looks shoddy and there doesn't seem to be much thought put into the packaging. Recently this is becoming an alarming trend with these box sets. You don't mind if it's say an "Album Classics Series" of five albums in cardboard sleeves for say £12. You know for that price it's aimed at value for money access to many albums and not the luxury end of the market. Why do these record companies think they can treat music fans and fans of the physical product in such a shameful way? I appreciate branded goods like clothing etc sell for prices far and above their manufacturing costs. You are buying into the luxury aspect of the item. Here with this CD set the luxury aspect of it has clearly been forgotten hasn't it? When you buy these sets you want to feel as though you are going to own something to treasure for many years. BMG needs to repackage and reissue this set. Pay a musical journalist to put together some decent notes. And retailers stop treating us like cash cows and release it at a more reasonable price. And this includes fairer pre-ordering pricing policies. At the moment they can take a big hike governed by demand. And if you haven't immediately pre-ordered it you pay the elevated price.
Hi John, thank you for watching. Your thoughts and words are excellent and I think mirror what a lot of fans and fellow collectors must feel. I hope comments like yours and the this channel help record labels appreciate what music fans of physical music actually want. Phil
Hi Phil, at the end of the day the fan base are probably of a certain age where they realise when they are being offered a sub standard product for a price that beggars belief. BMG are not only taking the fans for granted by not taking time and care in this box set presentation they alert us to their future releases. At the time of writing this it's currently on pre-order only but your video has done us all a great service by alerting us. I hope the fans take heed and refuse to currently buy. However, I suspect traders will be selling these on for even higher prices over the next few months. I suppose its a good set for those fans that current don't have any of their live releases at all.
Slade Alive, Slade Alive 2, Reading plus extras was released on Salvo. Around £13.00 I think and would have included the details about the albums. This is too expensive and a missed opportunity.
The group has been split up since 1991. I would have to imagine that information regarding the group is spotty at best. and you can bet that most record companies. are not going to do the extra leg work that would be necessary for the box set to be more comprehensive. but if it were up to the group SLADE. Noddy Holder, Dave Hill, Jimmy Lea, and Don Powell, would have wanted it to be more comprehensive.
Well that title has been pinched off Rush. Apart from " Worlds " as opposed to "World is a". Compliment to Rush though. Two great bands although very different. I went to see Slade in 1972 at the FreeTrade Hall Manchester. The support band was Status Quo who then had just been released from their PYE Label contract to Vertigo and had released Piledriver the second of their albums. Slade were not my kind of band back then but I did have a little liking for them in a way. I really went for Quo as many did. Slade had their following there but it was the wrong support act as some Quo fans were not kind to them. All the teenies were at the front near the stage as they did back then. From memory Quo did about 1 1/2 hrs and Slade about one hour, I know their act was considerably shorter. Noddy shouted down that mic as loud as he could, very very loud. Slade did not do an encore that night.....but it was a concert I never forgot. I was 19 I am now almost 70.
Just to inform you that a Slade track from the album Nobody's Fools called All The World Is A Stage was released in March 1976. Rush album All The World's A Stage was released in September of 1976. So who copied who. They actually both took the quote from Shakespeare's play As You Like It.
Yet another missed opportunity by BMG, which has a track record of not doing the artist full justice with box set releases. We all remember the Uriah Heep debacle with albums sharing covers. Even the ELP Fanfare box, while generally excellent, falls short on replicating gatefold covers etc. It seems to me that this Slade box inflames the suggestion that BMG doesn’t really understand what motivates the collector. As you allude to Phil, the booklet is in dire need of a context-setting/timelined essay and a complete record of how, and when, the live recordings were executed. Cherry Red almost always gets it right and would have unquestionably handled this project with more care. BMG needs to think less about producing things to a price and setting up some kind of special projects division that honours the label’s legacy artists. The tragedy is that, within reason, collectors will be happy to pay top dollar for a no holds barred super deluxe box that enhances the value proposition. I wonder what Noddy and the boys think of all this.
Hi Chris, thank you for watching. As you say they cut corners on the ELP Fanfare set but the sheer size of it and the extras saved the day. The Uriah Heep 50 years box set was a disgrace for a band of that stature. This Slade set looked fabulous when announced but the execution and the price point makes them look like a label that does not understand its potential audience at all. Musically fantastic, agreeing to put this out, brilliant! Taking advantage of their fanbase, very poor. Phil
Good review... but I won't be buying it as it looks like it's been thrown together by people who don't understand what us mad Slade fans want. They need to up their game with thier box sets. Follow the Beatles example of how to do good box sets. ....& where is the vinyl box set?. they might be excellent recordings, but should have had original replica covers where possible... and spicific dates etc with a better book. Other than all that it's cool. 😎
Very odd that Alive 2 isn't in it - It's truly a dropped ball, My Bootlegs prove they could do better than this, still being the magnificent Slade...Well, I'll have to get it...But only when cheap As for in the studio Alive albums...Kiss say hello.

It's over £50 on amazon. Where did you get it for £35?
It was £35 until a few days ago then it suddenly shot up to £50!!

Hi Paul, thank you for watching. I am hoping to talk to Noddy or Don for the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast so I must do that! Phil :)
I have the double cd with Slade alive 1 & 2 plus Slade on Stage and Reading so I'm going to pass on this one
Hi Paul, thank you for watching. That’s how I feel. The music is timeless but the presentation is a real let down. Phil
Very odd that Alive 2 isn't in it - It's truly a dropped ball, My Bootlegs prove they could do better than this, still being the magnificent Slade...Well, I'll have to get it...But only when cheap
As for in the studio Alive albums...Kiss say hello.
Hi and thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts …. Kiss say hello LoL - Phil :)
It's a gimmick made for profit by people that aren't fans. Would not waste my money.
