    12. English Foxhound
The English foxhound is an old breed that was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1909. In 1995, there were only 35 foxhounds registered with the AKC. Bred as hunting dogs, they were used in large packs for foxhunting. Known for their loyalty and gentleness, the English foxhound is today considered a good companion for an active household.
The foxhound is a small dog that can weigh between 55-75 pounds. At one time, British hunters put down their dogs at the age of seven, because it was believed the dogs lost their effectiveness as a hunter. Today, foxhounds are retired at the age of seven and are often put up for adoption. Another interesting fact about these dogs involves their fur. If you have a dog allergy, this may be the dog for you: they are light shedders. Rubbing the dogs down with a damp cloth minimizes the shedding even more.
    11. Harrier
The AKC first recognized the harrier in 1885. This old hunting breed hails from England. They were bred to hunt in packs for rabbits and hare, hence their name, “harrier”. The harrier’s appearance is so similar to beagles and foxhounds that some people mistake the dog for one of those breeds.
Like with foxhounds, a weekly wipe down with a damp cloth minimizes shedding. Harriers are outgoing and friendly dogs who like an active lifestyle. And they’re known for having a sense of humor and for being the “class clown”. Because of their independence and breeding, they need lots of training and exercise.
It sounds strange that such a fun-loving breed would be considered rare. But when England outlawed hunting hares by chasing them, the demand for the dog dropped. Some enthusiasts are concerned the breed will go extinct in ten to fifteen years.
    10. Norwegian Lundehund
Lundehund is Norwegian for “puffin dog”. This breed comes from the remote Lofoten Islands off the coast of Norway. They were bred to hunt puffins on steep vertical cliffs and have six toes on each foot and elongated rear footpads. Like many hunting breeds, they are smart, energetic dogs.
A good Lundehund could catch 30 puffins a night. Puffins nest in caves and these dogs developed the flexibility to be able to go in there and get them. Their heads can bend straight backwards until they touch their spines.
By the 1900s, nets were being used to catch puffins instead, and need for the dogs declined. As with the harrier, when the need declined, so did the breed. There are very few Lundehunds left in existence.
    9. American Foxhound
The American foxhound is leaner than its English cousin. It was bred in the United States to hunt foxes and other game. Like the English counterpart, they are bred to hunt in packs and can run for hours while giving chase.
The breed was created by crossing French and English hounds in the 17th and 18th centuries. George Washington, in fact, owned American foxhounds and bred them. As foxhunting in a group declined, so did the breed, making them rare despite all of their good traits. If you have one, it could be related to George Washington’s dogs!
    8. Otterhound
The large, stocky otterhound, which is slightly longer than it is tall, hails from Great Britain. It’s body shape allows it to trot at a slow pace for long distances. It has a rough outer coat and an oily inner coat that protects it both from brambles and cold water. This strong, athletic breed was bred to hunt otters, (again, ergo the name), and they even sport webbed feet. The otterhound’s sense of smell allows the breed to track otters through running water and over all sorts of terrain.
The otterhound’s strong prey instinct gives it a single-minded intensity when on the hunt. Its temperament, though, is amiable and affectionate, making it a good family pet. But its ability to think on its feet and hunt alone makes for a rather stubborn dog. Not traditionally kept as a pet, the otterhound breed retains a lot of the qualities originally bred into it.
Otter hunting reached its peak of popularity in the years preceding World War I. However, in 1978 England banned otter hunting because water pollution had already hurt the otter population. Two years later, Scotland also banned otter hunting. The packs were broken up and the dogs sent to private owners or mink hunting packs.

Vizsla’s seem kind of rare as well. I don’t see them very often (besides the one I have) the diminished in population until they were brought to the US but I have seen about 2 since I got mine. They are very loyal, energetic, and sweet dogs. Very lean and muscular and one of the fastest dogs on the planet. Short coat which means they don’t shed a lot, and they are naturally very clean. Sometimes they act like cats so this dog would be perfect for cat lovers. They are between 45-60 lbs usually but they love to act like lap dogs and cuddle up with you. They don’t bark much which is great and they aren’t too hard to train because they love pleasing humans. They are great with kids. If you want them for hunting they are perfect. Don’t get scared by loud noises too often and they are great pointers and are silent on their feet. They have soft mouths so they can retrieve your birds as well. Just beautiful dogs as well with soft fur. IMO Vizslas are an amazing but rare breed.

Please read my long comment about Bedlington Terriers above, then, if you believe it, read on below.
Once, when I was walking my new pup, Boris, in a local beauty spot: Plessey Woods, Bedlington, Northumberland, GB, I met a Hungarian couple who had with them a beautiful red coated pup with them. We got talking, as dog owners do, and I asked him if it was indeed a Vizsla, which the man, in pretty good English, confirmed it was. Then he called the dog by name: Bela. "After the famous Hungarian actor, Bela Lugosi - Dracula etc?" I asked.
"Yes," he confirmed bluntly, as if I was mocking him. (He was bigger than me, so I wouldn't anyway.) So I told him the origin of my dog's name: Boris, after the famous Hollywood actor, Boris Karloff - Frankenstein etc. "Who would believe it," I said. "Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, reincarnated as dogs and meeting in the woods like this!"
Unfortunately though, the couple stared at me like I was mad and walked away muttering.
      Stunning dogs though!

We had a dog that was part Catahoula and he was a problem from the beginning. He was unusually large 100 + lbs. but had the fierce loyalness of the Catahoula. He would attack anyone he thought might be a threat but protected all children and even teens completely. I was the only one that could handle him because my husband actually feared him. We use to foster children and had problems with some of the fathers. They could be very threatening and the Children Services would have to call us and warn us to please be careful because they thought he was dangerous. We laughed and said they didn't remember our dog and with that, they had no problems leaving the children with us. I would never get another dog like him because of the extreme work he created, I had to watch him all of the time to make sure he would not attack anyone he thought was getting too close BUT the love we had for each other was truly amazing.

I have an English Foxhound here in Maine & they are actually large dogs. Mine weighs about 100 lbs (won’t stay on the scales) & stands about 5’ 4” (he looks me in the eye when he stands up). His height is mostly in his body length. Very muscular & heavy, especially when he sits on you. A rowdy, hyper, smart, sneaky, loveable hound that was rescued as a puppy from Canada. He’s very very fast & strong. He started having seizures in December, not often but long ones. Very heartbreaking. Probably from them inbreeding for hunting. I love my Foxhound. He’s very unique & special - my big baby. His name is Rodney - he’s 4. He loves playing with kittens.

I have a rare dog called a Presa Canario. As you can tell by it’s name, they originate from the Canary Islands. They are related to mastiffs resulting in a big head and slim body. They make wonderful guard dogs. I decided to train him as an attack dog. He is six years old now and still a great fighter let alone companion. His name is Jefé which means “Boss” in Spanish. Have a nice day!

    • @claudiad7957

Jefe in Spanish carries the accent on the first e, not the second. Therefore the "tilde" or accent mark is incorrect. That being said, you do own a magnificent breed, and I do like the sound of his name with the accent at the end. Congratulations.

My 9 year old Tibetan Mastiff will go look at herself in the mirror after I comb her mane. She also plays tricks on me and we have a game of hide and seek. Very arrogant and foolish to think dogs can not have emotions.

Awe, I have a Catahoula. She's super smart with such a beautiful, unique coat that looks camouflaged. That's what drew me to her in the first place. She was a year old when I rescued her so I didnt know her heritage nor had I known there was such a breed. When I seen her the first time I felt so lucky as If I had won a puppy (dog) lottery, as I thought her coat was so rare/unique it was equated to having found a special rare/unique pokemon. Hahaha. Then I educated myself and came back to reality lol. I did end up winning the puppy lottery, however. She turned out to be just as amazing, unique and the rare perfect fit to our eclectic family, which is so much more special than her (still) stunning, eye-catching coat. :)

At last, I can offer something to the discussion; I've researched the origin of Bedlington Terriers for years!
Fifteen years ago, when I bought and renovated an two hundred year old property in Bedlington (a small town in rural Northumberland), I was thinking of buying a dog, so decided to find out what the renowned local Bedlington Terrier was properly about.
I found an old Victorian reference book in the tiny library there. In it was a copperplate print of the vicar of Bedlington, pictured out walking with his dogs: tri-corn hat, claw-hammer coat, et al, who'd bred it from what he called a 'Greyhound' and a now 'extinct' dog called a Gypsy Terrier. It was because of their unbelievable reflexes that they were originally ratters - a cruel sport - hence its bizarre competition cut. They were also quickly taken hunting by local miners too, as said. They are indeed also related to the Dandy-Dinmont and the Rothbury Terrier. (But therein lies another involved tale.)
Now, this is the odd part that really caught my imagination. The vet's surgery next door to my property used to be a tiny pub, and it's owner apparently used to be THE champion breeder of Bedlington Terriers in the world! As I finished painting the front door of my almost finished property, two ancient locals stopped to chat to me, or rather behind my back. One asked the other who the famous film stars were that used to come over from America to buy dogs there. After a while, the other tried to remember - "I don't know, but they were from Hollywood, weren't they?"
    "Yeah, right," I said; I can recognise a wind-up. I continued painting.
By complete coincidence, when the carpet fitter arrived a few days later, he told me that his irascible grandfather used to live next door. He ran a small, no-nonsense pub, and bred Bedlington Terriers. So after a while, I felt I just had to ask: "So... did your grandfather ever sell dogs to anyone... well... famous?" He scratched his chin and and replied reticently. "No, not really... But there was one time when I was little. I remember a huge black car pulling up and a couple of VIPs getting out. Granddad told me to stay in the parlour while he spoke to them."
"Any idea who they were?" I pushed.
"Well, no-one believed me when I told them at school, but one was Boris Karloff - the Mummy - Frankenstein - and one was Stan Laurel."
Apparently, perfectly true! It turns out that Boris Karloff, who was actually British, (accompanied by Stan Laurel, who was raised thirty miles from Bedlington) used to buy from him. Karloff took them back to Hollywood and bred them there, and for a while, they were very popular with the stars - even a notable fashion accessory. Groucho Marx, Victor Mature, and many others had these little lambs, supposedly to keep rats out of their mansions, if you believe that? And apparently they're still 'big' in California, Canada, Russia and Australia, though not so much in England any more. But I still have one.
So, as I sit here writing this in bed, he's is curled up on my feet, keeping me warm, two old boys together!
    "Aren't we Boy?"
    "Ruff!"
    "Boris says yes."
Well, what else could I call him after all?

xXRockStarTiger2_YT Study spelling! They herded stock so they are "shepherd" and all black shepherd can be foind as well as all white dog. Do your research ! German shepherds , as are most dogs , are born with drop ears and they eventually become erect in some breeds. A German shepherd
With drip ears when full grown are considered a fault and no one wants that ! Are you certain the dog is purebred?A shepherd without erect ears cannot be shown at a dog show. Erect ears are a breed requirement for the German shepherd dog!

Vastgotaspets or Vasgotenspitzen is an alternative name, "gotties" as our affectionate nickname for our little pack. We have a small group of breeders in Australia and New Zealand.

They did say so in the video and I think the text rendering "Väst-Götas-pets" was a very cute mistake. :)

Len ny She did what the title said...Which is different dog's breed that are rare and she clearly showed some. As in for the thumbnail that was just an example of what a "Rare breed dog." Might look like.

0SuperEnder Kevin0 Wrong, the thumbnail was supposed to draw people in by having them think the thumbnail was a dog featured in the video.
Out of curiosity, if I post a video called “making my own airplane,” where I make a paper plane, can I put a picture of a fighter jet in the thumbnail as an “example of what a plane might look like”?

Adding sand loosens soil and allows good drainage for pots and beds and allows roots to easily grow through the soil. It also allows for even moisture through out the pot or bed. It reduces the impact of compaction in late season vegetable plants in your garden.
Question: "Is A perched water table caused by adding sand? (A perched water table is an accumulation of groundwater located above a water table in an unsaturated zone.)"
Answer: NO! that is a myth! If you till or mix your soil up every year in your outdoor garden, you break up any possible compaction that could occur. The only possible way this could happen is if you lay down a 2"+ bed of sand on top of the dirt below then put your top soil above. in about 10 years of no-tilling the sand can clog and heavily reduce drainage.
