  • In this reason 12 beginner's tutorial, we will break down step by step where to find drum hits and sounds, how to sequence those sounds, even recreate the drum pattern from Coi Leray's "Players". This will help you understand the correlation between what you hear in a song, to how it looks programmed into a drum sequencer.

How advanced did you get with your tutorial videos? On the hip hop side it seems like Dilla, Just Blaze, and other East Coast Hip Hop producers make the best drum patterns. Are you able to point me to any videos showcasing how to use Reason to make drum patterns like that?

I haven’t made a video for drums for that style yet. Just the beginner drum tutorial. I still consider myself a beginner TH-camr but have been making music for a long time, but I’ll make that my next video. It may take a little bit while trying to balance regular life with TH-cam. Thanks for checking out the vid though.

This is a good one. It’s about swing and shuffle. That’s the key to that style. It takes a while to get used to and figuring out what sounds to shift and where to get that laid back sound.

how do you get it to where you can change the octave within seq? ie- hi hat rolls

Easiest way would be to load a hi hat sound into a sampler instead. For samplers reason has a piano roll when you pull up the sequencer. For example pull up mimic creative sampler, make sure it’s empty with no loaded sounds. Load in a hi hat sample. Make sure mimic is selected in your sequencer, then hit edit. Should pull up a piano roll for easy access to the full board. If you wanted to stick with redrum or kong you could just load up more hi hats and pitch them individually in the settings as well. Would take more work though. Hopefully that helps. If not let me know.
