Bill, I can only imagine the pressure you put on yourself to be successful. It can add a lot of anxiety this time of year when it seems it will never happen! I know my comment is not going to change how you feel but I wanted to reassure you and hopefully give you some encouragement. I sure hope you get that Jordan buck!
I have been in this situation a time or two. I try not to put on the pressure and make this into a bigger deal than it is. I am sure my sponsors would love to have a photo of me with a nice buck using their products, but I am OK if I end up without shooting one. My guess is that we will get that buck next year when he is 6 years old, if he survives. I know a lot more about him now after thinking through all the would haves and should haves. If he is still around next year I will approach the season a lot differently. Have a great day and thanks for the comment.
I feel a little guilty, when I first started watching you I said you were boring, now I realize I was wrong.. What you are is real! I am really enjoying the content and look forward to the daily updates.
Bill. Been watching your videos regularly for few weeks now. You have been spot on with your takes on what the deer are doing daily. I live southeast of Louisville ky and I am seeing the same activities happening here. This morning a fawn in estrus drew two mature bucks out. I haven’t hunted this season due to a shoulder surgery but able to watch my fields from home so living thru your honest videos. Keep ‘‘em coming and to Bryan z2m - there is a world of great hunting outside of Iowa properties. Bill has all the ingredients he needs in this property.
Just never fails to amaze me how short my favorite time of yr is. Seems like opening day of bow happens then I go to bed that eve and wake up and it's almost over😂. Whitetail deer season create better memories than anything else i can think of. God bless and happy hunting. I believe Bill will get the Jordan buck b4 the close! 🤞
We sure appreciate the information and experience and the footage to demonstrate it. I am glad you saw a good buck and a # of doe. It can certainly be frustrating going out and not at least seeing deer this time of year. Happy hunting.
Hey Bill, when I raised whitetails, my fawns would usually come into heat in February and March. Had to cull a fawns once during that time and it was a very precarious situation getting her out of the pen with my main breeder buck guarding her. I think I had to use my 4 wheeler for a shield! Good luck the rest of season.
Really enjoyed the episode and discussion of follow up estrous cycles when some others say it's not real. From what I've read when fawns hit a weight range (recalling 70lbs) they can conceive; I have seen sporadic chasing in mid December and some intense fighting in my short experience hunting late into the season trying to learn the ropes! Stay warm and have fun!
Thanks Alex. I just go by what I have read from studies and papers by the experts. My guess is that it is regional. The experts I have paid attention to say that up to 40% of the doe fawns will breed their first year in "good ranges". To me that implies lots of food and super healthy deer. Good luck.
I have to agree that the second rut can be a great time to be in the woods. Right around this time of year I have seen a decent amount of movement with bucks chasing does or a fawn. Hopefully you guys can get a shot at a solid buck ! Keep up the great work !
Keep it up Bill. You have been a huge inspiration for me to keep going. Thanks for the content. My 9 year old son has got 2 does and a buck this year and now my daughter wants to shoot her first deer. Im trying to get her on her first deer then try to shoot a decent buck yet this year in Ohio and it's so pressured right where im at. We have until Feb so we shall see haha.
I am really enjoying your videos. I am right now trying to figure this third hunting season of my new property. Thanks for your knowledge and struggles this year! Good luck to you all.
Interesting year we’ve had so far Bill, I hunted our ranch in NE Oklahoma this morning and saw a buck I know rutting with a hot doe. This same nice 8 pointer with tall brows was filmed locked down with a doe about 28 days ago when our rut typically kicks in. I’m still trying to get a 7 year old buck I’ve been after with my recurve the last couple of years, passing everything else, so hang in there for the Jordan buck. You’ll get your opportunity at him eventually. I’m seeing similar patterns where his range is tighter this season. Good luck!
awesome to see second rut action I'm trying to get a gameplan together planning a couple days was out yesterday saw one 8 pt moving in my backyard I'm in Wisconsin I like December 10th i know that doesn't work for you hope you get a couple more hunts in thanks for the encouragement!
I got a cell camera out in MO and it's blowing up with bucks opening scrapes and chasing yearlings right now. Headed up Friday to take advantage of it.
Looks just like the 8 i been hunting and it looked like 2 different mature bucks were all over that area and it looked like they was after a fawn! My buddy said the rut was dead and i said i thought so too but my cameras seem to be saying different! I jave a couple of the 360 pro cameras and they are game changers on a new property were you don't really know were they come and go from! Good luck brother! My deer daylighted at 720 am for the first time and i was working, wush me luck
It never ceases to amaze me how many “experienced” hunters who think fawns don’t get bred their first fall will tell you they saw a yearling doe with their fawn. Maybe math isn’t their forte.
@@bill-winke I watched a doe fawn visit a scrape during the peak of the rut this season. She hung out there for about 4 minutes, rubbing the over hanging branch smelling the scrape and then peed in it.
Dude.... "nothing huge "? ... i'd mount that all the way to his hooves and put him in my foyer!. Glad you saw a couple at least and that buck gets the hackles going for sure!! I'm mucking it out right along with you guys. Good luck. Hunt safe. Respect the game. Honor the tradition.
Bill, I learned a lot about my property this season. One, I can't continue to rely on whether or not we get fall rains for my food plots. Two, I definitely have to come up with some way to keep water in my water holes without relying on fall rains. Three, with failed food plots because of no rain and extremely warm temperatures this fall, I see the immense value in regeneration pockets. It is where all the activity was this fall. Being a totally wooded property with thousands of acres just like it surrounding my 98 acres, it finally came to me that the only fool proof habitat improvement is regeneration pockets and bedding pockets. That's my one and only focus this off season. I'll definitely plant my food plots if and only if it seems likely we will get fall rains, but I won't ever be caught flat-footed again, not having a fall back plan. Man, my chainsaw is going to get a workout the next few months!!
@@bill-winke Burning is too risky here, and the local fire departments and forestry department really frown on it. That's something I will have to research on how to keep it regenerating over time.
@@jordan.couch_wtp Allegheny Front in WV. I asked the fire department and forest department about burning a small food plot a couple years ago, and I was told absolutely not. The terrain and the high possibility of satellite fires starting from embers was their reason. If that happened, there would be no way for equipment to access the area to fight the fire. I was told not to even have a campfire. You don't know steep until you you've seen the terrain along the Front.

Keep it inexpensive at first until you are certain it is for you. It is not as much "fun" as you might think. So, with that in mind, look for a basic 4k camera such as the Sony AX100 with an external mic like the Sony ECMXYST1M. Add a Varizoom lens controller, a couple of adapters to make the Varizoom work with that camera, a cheap fluid head and basic camera arm setup and you can film most of what happens. We have had good success with this setup with minimal cost (compared to the true professional setups). You can spend a lot more so be careful. What you get by spending more is usually better audio capability and better low light performance, but this simple set up will get you started. You can always upgrade if you decide you like it. Good luck.
Bill, will you or Jordan rifle hunt at all? We just wrapped up the 9 day rifle season here in Wisconsin, and your description of the secondary rut explains the amount of chasing and rutting behavior I saw. By the way, I just got my Bowhunting Whitetails sweatshirt and it is the most comfortable one I've ever worn!
That is awesome Aiden. I appreciate that. Jordan gets the credit for that. I have shot does with my muzzleloader in the past and Jordan has shot a number of deer with the muzzleloader. They have been eating it, but not as heavily as they are corn nearby, so I may have to revise my plans for next year. But, I am not going to judge just yet. I want to see what role the sorghum plays in the late season. Have a great day and thanks for the comment.

Usually they are smaller. In good areas (plenty of food) a good number of the spike bucks you see at 1 1/2 years old were born to does that were bred as fawns. According to the experts, those bucks eventually catch up in body and antler size.
I understand that you are big on plots and food. I was wondering if you had many small creeks, stream's or ponds to hunt near by? Jason, there was a grove of apple trees in the area where the buck I was hunting was spending a lot of his time, but it is super hard to get in there without being seen so I am going to hunt it early season next year before all the corn comes out. Another thing I learned about that buck this year that I can possibly use next year if he survives. Thanks for watching.
I can, but then we have to come in across that open field and back out that way. That is where the deer were at dark. It was a roll of the dice, like I mentioned. Plus, with the NW wind it would have blown our scent to a lot of deer on the way in had we come in from the north.
