Thank you! I am so happy to find content specific to Alberta/Canada! We hunt in the bitter cold, and I am always looking for more tips on staying warm and quiet while bowhunting.
I’m a whitetail bow hunter here in Manitoba, sticking it out until the end of season with a bow. Crazy how similar my cold weather strategy is to Jim’s. When the temps get that cold there just isn’t many ways around it. That being said I still picked up a couple things from this vid, love the content guys👍
Wisconsin here. We're approaching the last few days of our annual gun season and this coming weekend is going to be a low of 10s and high 20s. I know its no where near canada's cold, but i am really looking forward to it, i just got myself the Fanatic set. Looking forward to it, Sitka is the best!!
You spend time with Jim and you learn a lot. You learn to choose every piece of clothing and gear wisely to take into the woods. You learn how important it is to be prepared and organized for the hunt. Might make you become obsessed with chasing the sound of silence.
We hunt all the way up in northern NY state close to Canada. I already incorporate a lot of these techniques Jim has very valuable cold-weather hunting tricks that just work.
I definitely want to see more of jims tips and strategies. Very valuable information. I like the oil and toilet paper trick. As for cold weather hunting, sitka gear is the first step in staying warm. I use the fanatic system and its the most thought out hunting gear for the bow hunter in mind. Anyone who has ever used sitka gear knows how good it is!
Perfect timing....and made me laugh 😂. I'm going out for my last hunt tomorrow in Alberta, Canada. Tomorrow morning it's going to be about -25c (-13f) in the morning. I'm still wearing my Gore Tex Merrell trail shoes, $65 rain pants from Cabela's over down long underweart, a down jacket from a hiking store, camo shell jacket from eBay to cover the down jacket. leather work gloves from Amazon and a toque. And I'll warm and cozy. When you work and play in this weather everyday it's not that bad. -40 is a little brisk so, you just add an extra layer.
I live and hunt in Alberta as well and now use Steger mukluks to keep my feet warm. I highly recommend them in 1 or 2 sizes larger (plus the wides) than your normal shoe size for sock layering as explained here.
I’m in Alberta also - which model of those mukluks have you found to work well? I currently am using a pair of the Cabela’s predator pac boots but they’re older now. The felt liners aren’t the greatest and have developed some holes along the stitching, so I’ve been debating whether to replace the liners or get new cold weather boots.
great video and interesting informations. Nice choice of gear. I noticed that too tight socks can also lead to cold feet/bad circulation. Darn Tough Socks work very good for me. best Julius
This was some excellent info. I’m also in Alberta and love to bow hunt late season whitetail, and you’re certainly right that your gear choice can make or break your hunt. I am currently still wearing my Sitka incinerator jacket and bibs that I picked up years ago - still in the old “forest” pattern. Good as new still after years of use. I find though that even with layering and using a hand muff and proper head gear that my feet and mainly my back starts to get cold in those long sits. My jacket and bibs still feel very lofty but isn’t maybe time to upgrade? Maybe it’s just my tolerance for the cold has dropped as I’ve gotten older. I’ve been thinking of picking up one of those body suits to wear over top for next season.
Stoked you found value in the video, Aubrey. Reach out to customer service and they can assist better on your gear and potentially upgrading. We appreciate the support.
Im in Ontario & saddle hunt till December 15th, i cant hunt with my ear's covered either & that brutal cold on the ears hits home hahah if your compound bow hunting in late season canada, your guna have a long cold sit without a system like this
I have a pair of US army mickey mouse boots. White ones. I have yet to find a reasonable sock system. Feet are still getting cold. I can spend entire day ice fishing and no issue. But if im in a tree stand sitting still, I am getting cold.
Silk sock liners, 1 or 2 pair. Then mountaineering socks. Socks needs to be a little loose. Scandinavians will put waterproof non breathable garbage bags on their feet then socks over top. Warm swamp feet but socks are dry. Either of these 2 might work. Research what socks are popular for Mt Everest.
I don't go hunting when the temperature is less than- 20 degrees and at -40 I generally try not to go outside once again and sit somewhere in such a cold-this is utopia. I need downy clothes At this temperature, it is better to stay at home near the stove. For hunting, a comfortable temperature is needed for hounds, it is -15 otherwise they do not pick up the trail As for archery, you need to be able to shoot with gloves, and for this you need a special release. Generally speaking, we always need gloves, even in summer, even in winter, because there are mosquitoes in summer and it's cold in winter, so you need to practice shooting with gloves.
What type of wicking socks do you or anybody use that is watching this. This is something that I have always had trouble with to keep my feet warm. Great information and happy Thanksgiving to all.
IMO the best of both worlds would be taking a thin piece of fleece outer just like the fanatic and stitching that on the back of an incinerator jacket. Basically an incinerator jacket without noise from the tree. The back doesn’t collect water anyway.
Dawg getting dressed is like 4 hrs worth of work. Heated socks, heated base layer and a good mid to outer layer. Would love to see this guy try and shoot his bow with all that on haha
Clearly you’ve never worn Sitka gear @Briguy933. Their clothing pieces are designed to be layered and specifically made for bowhunters. Meaning the elbow portions of jackets are thinner so material doesn’t bunch up, etc. I wear just as many layers as he does and I’m able to draw my bow just fine.
Drop a 1/2-1” off your draw length and 5-10lbs off your draw weight. This is exactly where preseason prep is essential. Practicing in all your layers and having your equipment set properly for it. All his hunters shoot in their gear before hunting each day.

Dude you have your shit together that’s for sure! This is excellent thank you
I wish you would make the incinerator hat in blaze orange. Many of us have blaze orange requirements for late muzzleloader seasons.
Go buy a Stormy Kromer. Warmest hat I’ve ever owned.
@ great idea, thanks.
Sitka should offer the blaze orange option in all hunting hats and beanies.
We hunt all the way up in northern NY state close to Canada.
I already incorporate a lot of these techniques

Love my Sitka gear , best warranty in the hunt clothing space

Stoked the gear is performing for you, Steve. Thanks for tuning in!
Great video. Learned some tips, as I’ve been going through the cold weather adjustment with the AB temps dropping last few days. Appreciate it!
Glad you found the video helpful.

I have always wrapped my stands in paracord. Takes forever but it works really well for insulation and sound dampening
What weave did you do? Cobra?
I've used felt which also works very well and you can wrap it up quick enough.
Awesome content.

At 12:00 what is that hook used to secure the stand to your belt?
I wish the Fanatic system was in a blaze orange, black branch camo
Enjoy the heck out of his videos!!! Kill is a killer
Stoked you enjoyed the video, Aaron.

Put charcoal, or gel on coffee can, light and hang under stand, put a blanket on you. Toasty
Tell me about your work gloves ? What brand, waterproof etc.? Thanks, Les
Bring back the cloud burst rain jacket!!!
Sgt deer hunting. I want to hunt with this guy.
Can you make something for muskox hunts 🤣 Alberta is warm compared to what I hunt in
blizzard aerolite
Will Sitka sell me just one incinerator mitt? lol
Am I wrong or does PAM have butter “flavor”
They do. I use it for case lube during reloading. Makes the press smell good.
Dawg getting dressed is like 4 hrs worth of work. Heated socks, heated base layer and a good mid to outer layer. Would love to see this guy try and shoot his bow with all that on haha
Guy kills giants man!
@ for one to kill giants one needs to live where the giants are. Not about what you wear. To a point

@ I am currently sitting in my stand wearing the stratus so yes I exclusively wear Sitka. Esw system to the fanatic.
