  • How to transform a plain car into a vacation home with balcony at (almost) no cost. This is my do it yourself stealth camper adaptation of a 2013 Skoda Octavia Hatchback. Since February 2019 I've been using it with pleasure during weekends and vacation trips in Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany. Essential products for the conversion: Cool-Shades window screens, Climair deflectors, Therm-A-Rest sleeping pads, Cocoon pad covers, Exped sleeping bag, Rako box. And most of all: Bialetti moka pot for coffee on the road. See a few construction details on • Skoda Octavia Camper: ... .

    This is so cool! Me and my girlfriend are currently in the planning phase of this build. What do you/other people use to sleep on? It would seem to me that a simple camping mat would break your back for longer roadtrips. Any advice?

      Hi Arne. I use a 5cm x 50 x 190 self inflating mat. I have two. When I'm alone I stack them. Personnally I (we) find them comfortable enough for a week or two. There may be thicker versions, or inflatable beds. It's a matter of balancing comfort vs. room requirements.

    • @gottardop
      @gottardop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Keith. I'll gladly do. It's a 60/40 cm split in width. Section lengths are 70, 100, 25 (actually 20 on one side, but that's a mistake). However, if I did it again, I'd split 50/50, so the last part of both sides could rest on the armrest instead of making a slider necessary to support one side. Also, I'd do 70,95,30 sections in length, so to make storage in the rear seat legroom even more accessible. Also, later I shaved off the corners of the 70 cm section in order to better fit the trunk design. However, bear in mind that you have an Octavia II, while mine is III, so there may be differences. I have 100 cm width between wheel arches. The idea behind it all, as you see in the video, is that the whole thing snugly fits in the trunk, in my case a depth of 100 cm. Also, the boxes that support the whole thing must offset the step created by the folding seat, in my case that's about 15 cm. Feel free to ask back if not clear enough. I could do drawings if needed.

      @@gottardop Good afternoon. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond with such a detailed description. I've just gone to measure my car and the dimensions are almost identical. 1 meter width between wheel arches and 190 to the arm rest (195 with the front seats pushed forward. I'll take your advice and go with the 50/50 split with the 70/95/30 sections. Do the Rako boxes do enough to comfortably hold (and level) the board? Do you have anything between the board and the folded seats to reinforce or is it necessary?

    • @gottardop
      @gottardop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keithbrennan6563 Hi Keith ... well, there's downsides to everything ;-). The Rako-Box holds snugly in the 40/60 split when the middle section is folded. The 50/50 split is best if you want the last section of both boards to sit on the armrest, so you don't need to build a support (like seen in other setups). Just the small part on the armrest is enough for stability, after all you only have heads there. I solved the support question adding a slider lock underneth t he 40 section, so it locks to the 60 when in place, but it's not so elegant. I'd still go for the 50/50 and find a solution to hold the box tight, with rubbers or something Having easy access to the backseat segroom is essential. Hope this rambling is hints enough, else please write again.

      @@gottardop Thanks again for getting back to me. I suppose I'll get the ply, do the cuts and then see what's required afterwards for levelling and reinforcement. We've recently had a Decathlon open it's doors in Dublin so picking up camping supplies will have been made easier/cheaper :)

    • @gottardop
      @gottardop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith, did you succeed? It just occurred to me that 70,95,30 doesn't work as the 70,30 must fold over the 95. Thus it should be 70,100, 30 or 65, 90, 25 or similar.

    What are the dimensions of the Rako boxes and how many do you need?

    • @gottardop
      @gottardop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. for the main storage and support I've used 5 boxes sized 40 x 30 x 12 cm plus 1 30 x 20 cm. That leaves room on the opening side of the trunk for another 2 30 x 20 or some other boxes withouth support function. See minute 0:22 on this video th-cam.com/video/8NtLzLyVnq4/w-d-xo.html for an overview. The number doesn't have to be exact, it depends how much "non boxed" storage you want to have on the rear seat side, where I usually place tent and sleeping bag.

  • @mrianwatson
    @mrianwatson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job. I was thinking of sleeping in my car when needed but I would just like to raise one side of the boot floor to make it level with the folded seats, do you know the size of the step? Looks about 4 or 5 inches.

      @gottardop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ciao Luca. Ho usato pressato di betulla, insomma, il più semplice che ho trovato in un supermercato fai da te, dove me lo son fatto tagliare su misura. Spessore 12mm e cerniere per collegare gli elementi. Nel caso della Rapid Sportback dovresti montarle però diversamente che nel mio esempio perchè il tuo cofano ha solo 80cm di profondità. Prrobabilmente lavorerai con elementi da 80, 80 e 20 e una larghezza di 100. Quello da a 20 deve ribaltarsi al contrario, sennò la cosa non ti ci stà nel cofano con i sedili in posizione normale. Da vedere se ti serve la separazione 60/40 in larghezza, a me è utile per poter usare il sedile posteriore sinistro, tipo per "car office". I mie materassini (autogonfiabili) hanno uno spessore di 5cm, sono gli stessi che uso in tenda. Quando viaggio solo alle volte metto uno sull'altro, si stà meglio. Se sei sensibile con la schiena, megli andare a 6cm o forse 10. Larghezza 100cm mi sa che non si trova però, io ho 2 x 50cm. Se viaggi sempre solo, mi sembra ce ne sono di confortevoli con larghezze tra 60 e 70 cm. Se hai pazienza, nei prossimi giorni ti faccio un disegno adattato alla tua auto.
