Carol performed during the 1972 halftime show alongside Ella Fitzgerald. Can’t seem to find it anywhere. She didn’t perform during this halftime show. 😭
Did you mean Carol Channing? (LOL) I haven't been able to spot her in this show, but I've heard that she performed in the Super Bowl VI (1972) halftime show. Sadly, that's one of a handful that I have yet to find when searching on Google and TH-cam for these old shows.
I agree that this is a lot of fun to watch, and I'm glad it's available even though it's not the greatest quality video in the world. IMHO, the Super Bowl halftime show jumped the shark BIG TIME in the early 1990's. I much prefer these old-school halftime shows from the early years of the Super Bowl.
@@robynsegg I stopped at 1992 when I was watching them this past winter, but I might have to check that one out since it's gotten so many rave reviews. :-)
Featuring New Orleans natives Al Hirt and Marguerite Piazza, as well as Doc Severinsen, Lionel Hampton and the Southern University band: 1:32 The Southern University Band from Baton Rouge, LA 3:40 Street of Dreams with Al Hirt 6:46 The Southern University Band from Baton Rouge, LA 9:57 Battle of New Orleans (reenacted) 13:58 Al Hirt & Lionel Hampton 16:30 Just a Closer Walk - a jazz funeral 18:58 Mardi Gras -with Al Hirt & Lionel Hampton
For those who don’t realize this was taken in 1970. The reason I say that is that Dr. Isaac Greggs from Southern University was Band Director starting in 1969. So if this was taped in the 1950s Greggs wouldn’t be the director of SU Band.
Actually not a bad show. Great jazz musicians and Marguerite Piazza were very good! I thought I was going to an Elvis Presto type show but I was pleasantly surprised!
Elvis Presto performed in the Super Bowl XXIII (1989) halftime show. Although I love old-time rock and roll, I was actually kind of underwhelmed with that show because with a name like "Elvis Presto," I was expecting to hear mostly Elvis Presley songs, and I think they only performed one of his songs in the entire show.
Dear reelblack: Quite often when they refer to the "1970" Super Bowl, they're referring to the Super Bowl that was played at the end of the 1970 season, which would actually have been played in calendar 1971 (Baltimore 16, Dallas 13). You might check to see if Carol Channing appeared as a soloist in that halftime show. Similarly, this game, Super Bowl IV, is usually referred to as the '69 Super Bowl, as it was the game that capped off the '69 season, even though it was played on January 11, 1970. Certainly whenever I think of the '68 Super Bowl, I think of the Jets, even though their win over the Colts came in Jan., '69.
This makes sense to me - it also occurred to me I have read Carol Channing was filming footage for a Pepsi commercial so her performance may actually have been removed from the real it is on for that purpose - we may never see the original footage as a result
I'd rather watch Al Hirt play the SBHS anyday over the people doing the half time shows today! Al Hirt , one of the finest trumpeters at this time! Al Hirt could kick Herb Alpert's trumpet ass on any day of the week!
It truly is interesting to see how much our ideas of 'entertainment' have changed over the years. Sometimes I think I was born 10-15 years too late...lol!
It's just a damn shame that the NFL hadn't figured out yet that the Super Bowl halftime show could be the spectacular mini concert that it has become. Because if they had, we might have seen The Beatles playing at one of the early Super Bowls. That would be a nice thing to have archived on videotape or film. But alas, it wasn't until after the NFL started inviting the "Up With People" people in the 1970s that they finally figured out that their halftime shows were a showcase opportunity that they were basically wasting.
She performed some year or another because there is a single photo of her performing with a big marching band. They even put her in a similar coat for the Pepsi commercial.
I think a lot of it had to do with low TV ratings during the halftime period. Re: my previous comment about "jumping the shark"--while that expression is often used in reference to a perceived decline in the overall quality of a show, it originally referred to the use of some type of gimmick to try to boost the ratings. That is exactly what happened to the Super Bowl halftime show in the 1990's; they started doing lavish concert-style shows with big-name entertainers to keep the TV audience tuned in.
Carol Channing performed at Super Bowl VI (6), not Super Bowl IV (4). Overall, I got tired a long time ago of seeing pop acts perform at Super Bowls. Unless it's someone truly talented like Prince or The Who, we need to go back to marching bands.
It's very confusing because everything online says Carol Channing performed at both the 1970 and 1972 Super Bowls and she had said so herself. And odder, descriptions say she was right in the middle of it all in 1970, with the marching bands performing "When the Saints Go Marching In" after the battle re-enactment. And then she was invited back 2 years later to perform again. So this has always been very confusing!
Color TV was first broad cast in the late 1950s. Video tape was expensive. CBS erased the original Color video tape for re-use. What you see is a copy of the Canadian B&W kinescope.
reelblack I was a baby in 1962. I remember EVERYTHING was black and white. No color was seen thru my eyes. We were the only American Indians living in South Central los angeles, and so i was black. CBS erased the videotape days after the game. The only surviving complete footage came from CBC which aired the game and saved it on kinescope because Minnesota coach Bud Grant was a legendary CFL coach plus since Minnesota borders on Canada.
@@RayNDeere We are lucky to have a video of this show, even if the quality isn't the greatest. I think the Super Bowl II halftime show may be the holy grail of SB halftime shows because even the game itself had to be reconstructed since there were no surviving tapes of the full game.

Pandora looks amazing here
Hard to believe she was 61 here.
good to know i’m not the only one who came to see the real performance haha
Go Dad! That's my Daddy playing trumpet in the Human Jukebox, Southern University Marching Band.
I saw nothing of Carol Channing.
This doesn't really look like 1970, more like 1950s, but still pretty cool to watch!
That's because the Canadian Broadcasting Company did a kinescope (Black and White film) of the video then recorded over the tape.
I agree that this is a lot of fun to watch, and I'm glad it's available even though it's not the greatest quality video in the world. Ummmm, OK did she get lost on her way to the stadium or did her Lyft driver take the scenic route?
I didnt see Pandora Boxx here
And where is Carol Channing?
right?
Wikipedia said she did the first one on Jan. 16, 1972. (FYI: My 4th birthday!) P.S. #PandoraBoxx's brought me here! LOL!
How was pandora able to record this many moons ago?
Much better than any halftime show in the past 20 years.
Pandora brought me here
I was nine and vividly remember watching it live on TV. Cue the video to 13:58 and you'll see Al Hirt & Lionel Hampton.
Now THIS is a halftime show!
At what minute does Pandora, I mean, Carol comes out?
you mean Sheryl Canning?
Pandora boxx!!
Wow, my alma mater -- THE Southern University! A tradition of excellence. RIH Dr. Isaac Greggs.
My parents met while working the game in N.O.! Both 19....

Al Hirt was a distant cousin of mine. So it's neat to watch him from the first Super Bowl and this one.
Long live Mr. Lionel Hampton and his xylophone.
Beautifully played! I have never heard a xylophone played so wonderfully. A nice compliment to Mr. Hirt's performance.
Not to go pedantic... but it's a vibraphone, not a xylophone. Among other differences, vibes have metal bars while xylophone bars are wood. Cheers!
Long live Pandora boxxx
those band marches are at least 65 years old now!!!!.... wow time flys! !!!
Time ‘flies’.
Thank you for this...now to find the 1972 Superbowl with Ella and Al Hirt... Can't find it anywhere....
Didnt know they had halftime shows back then. Just thought they played the game.
Me too, but I guess 1970 was when they had an actual celebrity singing in the spotlight.

Yes because this is Super Bowl #4 and Super Bowl 1 was in 1966!
