      I often stay at the inlaws place in the Yuexiu district in Guangzhou, often the companies that deal with mail/parcels start taking over the streets after 10pm when many shops close up for the day. I can hear them from my bedroom window if I leave it open, the noise of people moving stuff around, taking and sending off deliveries. It's a 24/7 city and I never get tired of visiting every 2 years. That and Hong Kong. HK is pretty lively in some parts after midnight and eating at a roadside stall at 3am is something you can get used to pretty easily.

      It was way more common to hear Cantonese back in the 2000s but in the last 10 years, a massive wave of people from the north have moved into Guangzhou because of the opportunities to earn money. Mandarin is everywhere now and in many places like restaurants etc, lots of staff do not speak Mandarin. But I've noticed more people speak English now than say 10 years ago also.

      About 25 years ago, there were thieves in the streets of China. They would quietly put their hands into other people's backpacks. But now, those thieves have
      disappeared.
      I think there are two reasons:
      (1) The camera greatly improves the efficiency of the police in solving crimes, and almost no thief can escape the pursuit;
      (2) Ordinary Chinese are getting richer and richer. When everyone has enough food to eat, there is no need to steal.
