    Statistics can be quite misleading, and for years now we’ve become accustomed to seeing the same possession, shots and passing metrics after every match, under the assumption that these numbers give us an accurate representation of how a game unfolded and how the teams performed. Unfortunately, these numbers rarely paint the whole picture, and give us limited insight into a team’s specific style of play. But In recent years Football has undergone a massive revolution in data collection, which has ushered in a new era of advanced metrics for us to get accustomed to. And with the amount of data we now have available, I believe it’s time to upgrade the type of statistics we use to analyse a match, and in today’s video, We’re going to be taking an in-depth look at some of the most important new metrics to keep an eye on.

    I actually hadn't realized Brazil got so many shots on goal in that game. Felt like they were constantly losing the ball just outside the 18 and immediately getting countered, which I suppose isn't totally wrong given how many times they failed to score.

      Brazil doesn't get many good hots, more shots from outside the box, just in hope.

    Statistical analysis that takes game state into account is something I'm really interested in.
    Seeing how individual and collective player performances respond to various states of play such as; being a goal down, having a lead, being a man down etc. And perhaps time should be a considered variable in some of this. The urgency to score an equaliser isn't the same in the first half as it is in the second.

    With the implementation of Semi-Automatic Offside call like in the World Cup, you can have a 3d representation with very high refresh rate of every player for the whole match. I think it will be interesting to extract some stats from that - for example the FoV of each player, the amount of times he scan for information around the pitch (or Scan per Minute :p), how many other player's positions did he scan, etc. I imagine someone like Odegaard would score pretty high in these metric.

Shame that Football Manager makes him 10. best and Ballon d’or leaves him outside of top 30 just because media press. He was not just goals and assist an even at his 2022 season he was 3rd best player in the world statistically in whoscored even he has 6 goals which gives most of the points of attackers. Lewa and Mbappe was 1-2 and they had 30-35 goals.

It’s not really accurate as a representation of a similar concept. But some breakdown (by field third, game state, etc) would be great. + some xThreat since it’s really straightforward to implement

    The speed of ball moving from player to player in opposite side of the field is a very good indicator of a good offensive performance. But few important things should be taken in consideration sach as total amount of completed passes and whenever they reach opposite box or not. The key thing is this - I believe metrics which logically detect ball speed during attaking actions and have it in it's formula harmonically with pass quality and danger to opposite goal, will have high correlation with final result.

    Yo big respect for the content and the way you explain everything. I got few questions, maybe suggestions for future topics you could help us with.
    What is your opinion on long balls? Do they indicate a more direct style of play. Are they efective against high presing teams, or what is the best way tu use them, considering the shape of the team and other factors that you (obviously) know better than me. 😁
    Also, about the phisicality of the players, taller vs shorter, is there a significant difference in terms of talent, quality, speed etc?
    I have so many more questions but i will subscribe to your patreon and maybe find answers there or ask more questions there.
    Again, big up for your work. Keep it going! 🤙

    • @FootballMeta
      @FootballMeta  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, thank you for signing up to the patreon, I promise I will be more active soon! I think long balls are definitely still viable, obviously it depends what players you have, but it's still a relatively effective way of moving the ball forward. I think with the increase in high pressing teams, the long ball has certainly started to make a comeback, but I'm not sure if it will ever go back to the levels it was at.. I'm planning on making a video on it eventually!
      Second question on physicality, I think that's the beauty of football, you can be Peter crouch or Lionel Messi, it doesn't matter what shape and size you are, just play to your strengths and use your body to your advantage

    • @constantinturica4184
      @constantinturica4184 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FootballMeta Thanks for the reply man. Really appreciate it.
      And of course i have so many more questions lol.
      Are you familiar with the whoscored website? And if you are, whats your oppinion on the way they interpret the data regarding team styles of play, strenghts and weakness.
      Also i think the biggest question there is, in order to think like a coach, or should i say, as 2 coaches when comparing 2 teams, what are the key factors I should consider? Or to put it in other words, when looking at the data is there any way I could teel how the manager plans the matches, and adapts during the game against certain teams?
      I know this may be an unclear question but i really want to start thinking like a manager, if possible, lol.
      Thanks and all the best!🤙

    Wasn't aware of some of these metrics! Fascinating! For BDP and other metrics though, there are confounding factors and for better understanding we need to take into account the opposition team and how they play and also the live score since needs are changing based on this. So, it's different if you chase the score or not and it's different if you play with an aggressive team or not.

    the only thing with the xova score i don’t like is if you have a target striker, a guy that’s good at holding the ball and dumping it off to other players, then maybe running in behind, that might be viewed as a negative value because the ball moves backwards, and he could control and hold a long ball near the 18, hold it long enough to receive help, dump it off to them, and they pass it back into him for a goal, which was only possible cuz of his play, but since it was a back pass it was a negative offensive value,, but maybe the squares are big enough that that doesn’t really make a difference i don’t know

      It depends, given that most of the stats we looked at were offensive, players like di Lorenzo and Trent usually score quite high in xT and xOVA

    Is xOVA also affected by a turnover? Either by a bad pass or losing the ball from a tackle? I’m thinking a player who may put themselves into positions to have a greater xA but loses the ball frequently wouldn’t be included in this because they didn’t make the pass but would theoretically affect the score quite a bit.

    Isn't the SGA a metric that is highly affected by the total amount of shots? Like a player who tales three shots with an xG of 0.3 and an xGoT of 0.5 will have a total score of 0.6 whereas a player who takes similar shots 10 times will have an SGA of 2.0 or am I misunderatnding? Wouldn't it make sense to divide the SGA by total shots?

    Statistics in footbal are problematic for people who don't know what they're looking as you don't have binary situations that are considered good or bad. Field tilt is interesting, but it doesn't show quality. A lot of dominant teams in poor form will end up with a massive team tilt statistic, as they don't pay quickly enough to dislodge the opponent's defence. A peak De Bruyne - Haaland combination will result in a low team tilt as they wil minimize team tilt with only two touches. When it comes to goalkeepers, there are players who build their career on playing to the statistic, rather than the result. De Gea, Navas, Lloris are a few examples of goalkeepers who don't try to minimize the goalscoring opportunities of the opponent, but try to maximize their low percentage shot stopping. A goalkeeper that picks off 4 out of 5 crosses, and going under a single cross will always be scored lower than a goalkeeper who ignores the crosses and let the attacker take 5 shots where they save 3 out of 5 even though they just allowed an extra goal. Because it were goals that supposedly had a low stopping percentage. It's why Courtois is the far better goalkeeper compared to Navas, even though fans don't really see it.

    Regarding shots Still can't see the value of counting shots hitting the posts or bar as being off target.
    A statistic I would like to see more of is how many possessions lead to an actual attempt on goal.

    BDP% is a very flawed metric. Firstly the fact that there are many reasons a teams pass completion percentage can fluctuate, it's not all down to pressing. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, they way they calculate BDP% is by finding that difference in passing completion rate, then *compares* it to the same metric of the opposing team. What it's doing is NOT describing how effective a teams press is. But describing how effective a teams press is only compared to the team they are facing.
    For example If Liverpool play Everton, Liverpool will have a massive BDP%, because they press high and Everton sit in and defend. Even if Liverpools press never wins the ball and Everton play through it every single time. It's comparing the teams presses on a game by game basis, it's not telling you how good a teams press is in a vacuum.
    So you can theoretically come out of a season with the highest BDP%, and yet never make a single chance from said high press. It's also not shifted for possession. So a team like Man City with very high possession will not feature highly, even though their high press is vital to the way they play.
