  • Moving into the first three months of 1995 in the look back at 1990's rail activity in Central Victoria and there's plenty of interest in this one with the retrieval of steam locomotive R711 from its' resting place of fourteen years for West Coast Railways' with the R being placed back on the main line for collection, with the WCR transfer move from Ballarat East also seen headed by S300 and B61 in the attractive WCR blue/yellow/white livery making a rare (at the time) appearance in Bendigo.
    There's plenty more N's on freights too with the class rostered as lead units on 9083/9084 Deniliquin rice as far as Bendigo, with one such train also including a number of derailment damaged wagons being sent to the Bendigo North workshops for assessment.

    Splendid coverage of the beginning of R711 restoration. Well done. I remember the event.

      Yes, one of the better liveries over the years. I only hope someone is able to repaint a loco back into it one day.

    Look at all the people on the tracks watching R711 get craned on! If only you could still do that now :’(

      Walking on the tracks is a thing probably best left in those days

    1995 was when R711 was moved... damn that's gone quick. I was almost 15 lol. I think i remember watching it.
    Do you have any videos of the 80's particularly showing the bendigo yard? Would love to see how much it has changed

      Nah dad got the video camera in late 1993, and stopped using it in 1998 after the battery stopped holding a charge

    Quite odd to look back and see N classes used on freight services - it must be many years since these units were used for freight. There's always hope we will see this sort of thing again in the future when vline retires the last of their locomotive services - hopefully SSR or someone will have a use for them.

      The most recent occurence of N's scheduled on freights were in 2004 during the Geelong line RFR shutdown when four N's and a couple of A's were hired to Freight Australia. The only one we saw in Bendigo as part of that was A62 on a 9083 IIRC.

    Would S300 and B61 have used the Maryborough to Castlemaine line for that transfer?

      @Greensleeves94  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, went via Guildford both ways

    Do you know whereabouts the cement traffic went to? There's a couple of cement pots in the consist at 10:06.

    Fantastic stuff. This all happened before I moved to Bendigo, and I wondered how R711 was moved. Thank you.

      No worries, glad you enjoyed it. It had been shunted into place back in 1981 by Y135 (at the time the Bendigo pilot) when R766 was swapped out for it. Apparently the Y was struggling pretty badly when trying to drag 766 out due to the grade to the plinth.

    I would’ve loved to have seen R711 be returned to the railway plus, it looks weird to see 711 in black and red

      @@Greensleeves94 Its a small price to pay to see such fantastic documentation of the bendigo railway scene in the late 1990s
      It was especially nice to see R 177 being moved.
