This video struck home for me. My entire life has been one addiction/compulsion after another, running to anything that will distract me from actually facing the real issues of my life. My latest obsession was an exercise kick that lasted about a year and a half. I lost a bunch of weight and was feeling pretty good about myself. But I'm almost 50 years old, and my body finally said, "You can't do this anymore." Maintaining that level of commitment and focus is an enormous energy draw, and eventually I just deflated. You know what they say about "the best laid plans of mice and men."
I love how you ended the last minute of this video. You're on point. I been studying Carl Jung's work on the shadow ever since I begin learning about the unconscious and how much influence it has over our lives. Anyways, really commend your last comments and your early ones on how life and early schooling pollutes our minds with junk off the bat at an early age. I agree, and have come to realize there's more tearing down need in our lives than building up.
Love this. I searched 'uncovering your shadow' and I happily found this video. I've watched many of your videos in the past, but this one was my favorite! I feel all of it and I laughed out loud when you described me a few times. Thank you for what you do, it is quite helpful.
I was told by a friend that I should be grateful for my parents and all that they have done for me. Yet at least for the past seven years I have struggled with depression, and I owe my overcoming of it much more to my own decisions than my parents' input. I was also diagnosed as having Manic Depression, yet time led me to realise that it had been a misdiagnosis. My parents became my enemies and I saw a much darker side to them. I have heard that in seven years most of our cells have been replaced. I am not the child that they raised any more, but the man I have become by my own struggles. To be honest, I feel no gratitude for the past twenty-three years. When they do things for me, I thank them and feel a warmth, but I feel no debt to them. After all, unconditional love definitionally becomes absent when one demands gratitude, and how can one be grateful for something that might (as well have) be(en) conditional from the beginning? Is that mode of life that one is born into not the reason for so many suicides, when one believes that one must live for others but does not know one's own reasons for Life?
There is nothing you "should" do (unlike what your friend told you). including feeling grateful, or positive etc. there is nothing you "should" be doing or feeling if it is not naturally arising in you. This "should" is part of the programming of society that has been passing on from generation to generation causing immense unnecessary suffering for us humans. The most I would suggest, is that if you are unhappy about something, is to inquire into it, without any preconceptions or pre ideas of how you should or shouldn't be, just inquire (not intellectually, but experientially) into what is arising in you right now. One useful tool for such an inquiry that I found is the 'Living Inquiries' www.livinginquiries.com/ (I'm not affiliated with it in any way)
I really loved this video My mind is just completely boggled down with all these different areas in which I feel the need to continuously criticize and compare myself. So hard to relieve myself of this. It seriously makes me feel totally trapped and makes life difficult to enjoy
Life is beautiful when your young especially as your mindset is one as the fool . So many young guru's spitting knowledge is a breath of fresh air for sure however inside I am thinking what of any hardships has this kid encounter yet in his young life to warrant my attention ? I respect all however someone who has lived their life and still managed to learn to stay happy and complete while old and Grey will always grab a hold of me and teach me lessons that these kids could only dream of. Don't get me wrong I love what this kid is preaching awareness however after going through a loss of family members , children, divorce, tragedy can effect you in ways you are not prepared for , there is no preparing for change must just accept and move on and pick up the pieces. I wish this kid the best and one day he will understand the trials of life and not a chalkboard of what to do and what not to do or how to think.
Maika Kai exactly feel how you feel better yourself for you, was the point I think just something to chew on. Never invalidate yourself. I've lost a dad and multiple friends and have had some childhood traumas. Only 23 but am still grateful for what I have and I wish you the best through life friend :)
I just realized that my life has been an obsessive and compulsive mind-fuck to achieve some sort of idealistic perfection that can never actually exist in reality. LOL
+Jacob Gasho I DONT WANT TO SPEAK FOR HIM BUT SOMEWHERE THERE IS A CONNECTION THERE. IT FORCES YOU TO SEE AND BELIEVE IN SOMETHING THAT ISN'T ONLY REAL IN A REALM WHERE YOU CAN ONLY SEE
You hit the nail on the head....i'm trying to get your video out there virally....i want all of my facebook friends to post it...it's so right on and so well said...easy to listen to and applies to everyone, everywhere. (and of course, I want everyone to LIKE it - LOL)....but in all seriousness, I really wish as many people as possible will listen/watch this and realize the truth. thankyou!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video as this applies to just a handful of my friends who are aware enough of everything and anything in life, generally, speaking.- especially pertaining life outside of social media. A few of my friends and I have made a tough commitment into straying away from social media- closing and deleting our accounts on instagram, facebook and whatever, to honestly, truthfully and rightfully enjoy life as it was naturally intended.
+Jose A. Peralta Did you miss the point? He's not criticizing social media. You made a TOUGH commitment to STRAY away, and then you'll live HONESTLY with yourself after that, will you really? OR more likely - are you just projecting your shadow to social media?
I've noticed in myself that I have deep feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness so I seek to overcompensate by getting people to like me which never really works. It's like trying to fill up a bottomless pit. I think once you are able to realize your own intrinsic and inherent worthiness and adequacy, you then realize other people's judgments don't really matter.
You make a lot of great points in this video about the cycles people go through in finding a new way of life and making seemingly 'better' choices for themselves - its natural for people to get excited about a new way of life (and even force it on their loved ones, because they thought they found the 'right' way) --- Brandon, isnt this what you did with your elixirs and extracts? Didnt you encourage your loved ones to try Reishi? Once you felt great benefits from meditation, didnt you nudge a few people to give it a try? Pardon me, but I'd have to say probably 80 percent of your business comes from the VERY people who are getting excited about a new lifestyle and they are your biggest cheerleaders, telling their friends and family and so on. I see the value in this video, it makes a lot of sense - But so what if a drug addict turns his addiction into a yoga practice, why discourage that? If people didnt have these issues, they surely wouldnt be joining your academy. Your snickering after making a point does not help anyone and basically, you're laughing at your viewers. I think its important to remember where you came from when you started on your health journey too. How many liters of Kombucha did you drink when first you found out it was good for your gut? You'd be much more effective if you leveled with people and told them that you were there before too - Thanks.
I Appreciate your thoughts and perspective. I also think you missed the point of the video as it's not condemning anything. Awareness is usually the first step of change, which is the point of the video. In no way am I saying any one thing is good or bad, which is why I'm saying you missed the point. You seemed keen on taking a condescending and know it all tone with me. I'm not sure why you would feel the need or entitlement to such a stance. The point of the video is looking at the place from which we approach things, not the things themselves and that unless we address the root of the thing then may not really move past it. I'm ok if you don't agree with that or think that's a good thing. Either way, that was my intention and reason for the topic and I think was expressed fairly well.
Brandon Gilbert Hey, I dont know everything and I dont aim to put anyone down - I commented for what now seems like silly reasons - I appreciate your new video, it cleared things up a bit - Thanks.
I love this video. I have a question, how can I throw all the masks and show the society my Shadow, my real self, as long as my Shadow is authentic and against this Capitalistic system? Because this makes me not lovable and acceptable in the society! Like I am against lots of Industrial society , social media, consume society, fake fake fake society! My shadow is a man who is pissed off of these nowadays problems. Any guide, tips , help are highly appreciated. Thnx in advance. Shad
I was hoping to get the book called "The Tao of Physics" as well as record as MUCH information from you and Zak from SecretsofLongevity, because you two gentlemen as well as Fritjof Capra, MANY other Spiritual Teachers and Great Scientific Minds have inspired me. I appreciate what you all have done for the ENTIRETY of the Earth.
If one's individual shadow is borne of trauma, as an example, and the ego posturing that bubbles up later on in life is a distorted coping mechanism... other than meditation, what would be one of the ways you would recommend for a person to come back to truly what is? I'm also totally liking this video. And I am doing so in complete and honest genuineness.
thanks for your comment. really there is no "way." it depends on the person and what they are working with, etc. many of the videos ive done and classes ive taught dive into this subject as far as bringing awareness to false programs, ideas, etc. also i really enjoy carol k. anthonys book, so that may be something to look into as well.
yes...you have made a good argument, but it is very unconfortable to life as an authentic invidual in an inauthentic society...to some degree you must follw the rules of the matrix...jung talks about the persona, that ia neccesary to some degree, cause we dont go to work and act like in the home...but that if we are conscus of it it is ok...you seem like a sane person in an insane world...glad to see people like this...thank you.
Can you cast some light on my problem. With a lot of negative energy in me ( anxiety, fear ), i once thought "what if i stop loving my girfriend", and got panicked. and that another thought after that " what if i feel this fear, anxiety, pressure, pain, everytime i'm with her. ( So i projected my problems on to her ). And untill that time, she was my boat of sanity, and peace And not knowing for a long time how to deal with it, i suffered, and thus created a mental pattern in my psyche that reacts when im with her. Now much less than before, cause i learned about meditation, and letting go, but its still there. I often THINK, what if i dont love her, what if this what if that, i once thought even "What if i killed her ". You know, how can the mind trick you like that, to the thing you love the most. You could say i was to attached to her, and i still kinda am. I know that thoughts can't tell you if u love somebody, but its so heard to feel anything, when u feel fear, and axniety. What my question is , is how to deal with this, dislove it. Is it by thinking it out, and than apply something. Is this a shadow projection? How do u dislolve a shadow ? Is it by thinking, or by being conscious of it, and allow it to be, untill the pattern disolves, so that i can think, and feel clearly. I ofthen have other anxious thoughts, but this was the biggest one, and after that, came many others. And i;m in some kind of fear of the mind thing, just cause it creates this patterns, cause i fuel it with attention i guess. But i cant reallt focus my intention on anything else, i just want to fix this .... thank you, peace.
The key thing seems to be to find the right group of people. There seems to be a contradiction in Bertrand Russell's Conquest of Happiness. If it is not a contradiction then it is otherwise something that needs to be harmonized. He says that it is best to move away from the ego and anthropocentric view on things, to see humans and our individual lives for what they are - not to get so caught up on ego-based matters - materialism, pettiness, and all the other ephemeral and culturally sanctioned things. And that's all agreeable and fine. The only thing is he closes the book by saying that we, as individuals, need to join the stream of life, and become one with the flow of life and living - to be at one with the entire process. But the problem I can't overstep here is that it is the stream of life that hands us the former unwanted cultural noise - such as the things you refer to a lot in your video here Brandon. How can you get a good overview of mankind by joining it's stream? And how can you flow in it's stream by having a good overview? I'm a bit brick walled by it at present, I guess balance is always the name of the game - not that it should ever be referred to as a game if authenticity is the real aim. In any case, shaking off the cultural mayhem is a good ongoing process to have in mind and be involved with. Thanks for your insight Brandon :)
I don’t think happiness is a fake sort of desire. If happiness is treated as fake, then, what hope is left in living in this world. There will be no meaning in life if people see emotions as fake. What is the use of achievements or success if emotions are blank?
This is completely foreign to everything about my life. You might as well be speaking a different language. (My God, I'm more fucked than I even first believed!) I think I need to hit rewind and watch again. Maybe 20 more times.
I was truly enjoying what you had to say until you threw in the extreme judgement of why people have a certain nutrition, exercise, or other type of lifestyle. Be more open minded about people because you're generalizing ...getting sucked into an extreme lazy habit of thinking everyone is doing the same thing for the same reason. You can't be authentic & say things like this. Authenticity is who YOU are...not what you project others are. Every path is lined with extremes of some nature because without contrasts, how can you discern WHO you are & what your authentic self looks like. You just seem so gloomy in this video & need a boost to better get your message out. To get people to hear your message, you might consider getting in the proper state to get them excited about it because, unfortunately, you don't appear so excited about it yourself. I hope you find your joy! Blessings 👍😉❤️
i didnt say everyone does X because of Y. specifically what i did say was that i have seen a many people who do fall into that category, obviously not everyone does, which is why i didnt and wouldnt say that. what i am referring to, is years of working with people one on one through consultations and coaching. also being in this industry for 8+ years now and knowing many of the "top" "authorities" and their backstories/histories. that intimate experience is what informed that opinion. its quite OK with me if you dont agree or enjoy that perspective.
Brandon Gilbert its also interesting to point out that often when people accuse others of such things, its because they are prone to thinking in such ways. its pretty clear that the objective of the video is looking at how the shadow plays out in various ways, as such, illustrations may be used. theres a large difference between specific illustrations/examples and generalizations. to generalize, i think my viewers see this difference, while understanding the aim and point of this video. lastly, i have nothing against yoga or various diets. i practice yoga daily and many of my best friends are yoga teachers and vegetarians. so why would i try to put them down or demonize them?
Brandon Gilbert You make a lot of great points in this video about the cycles people go through in finding a new way of life and making seemingly 'better' choices for themselves - its natural for people to get excited about a new way of life (and even force it on their loved ones, because they thought they found the 'right' way) --- Brandon, isnt this what you did with your elixirs and extracts? Good video. I disagree with your view on school though. There's no question it's historically rooted in setting people up for work in the factory. But students are taught by teachers, not robots. Teacher know for the most part what's really important. My life would suck if I never went to school.
obviously there are some excellent teachers out there who inspire and change lives. if we look at the world, most aren't and we could perhaps benefit from more. school is also helpful for some people and a huge waste for other. a study of the successful people in history can reveal this. thanks for watching and commenting!
Brandon Gilbert Good point. The school system needs to be updated and improved, but the world is a better place with school than without it. That may be changing now though with how easy it is to learn in the Digital Age.
I respectfully disagree with your intro. First of all, your intro, and comparison to religion and industry is not needed (you can say this about everything....East vs West etc. ..and I have spent much time in China and Europe...the people there are not much different) Religions, such as Catholicism, once you get past the grade school stuff, is chock full of psychological teachings and reflection on the shadow self, in fact, thats what it is most about (obviously they do not says this outright) . I DO agree with your assessment of people wanting to be only at the top without the lows, and thats where you hit a home run. thanks.
Remember, not every viewer has time to be wasted. So speaking very slowly does hinder user experience. Good video, good info. Please though, do not be so slow. Compensate a slow speech pattern with more concise sentences and that may work. I found this very difficult to watch when it could've been 10 minutes.
“Man's worst sin is unconsciousness” (Jung)
This video struck home for me. My entire life has been one addiction/compulsion after another, running to anything that will distract me from actually facing the real issues of my life. My latest obsession was an exercise kick that lasted about a year and a half. I lost a bunch of weight and was feeling pretty good about myself. But I'm almost 50 years old, and my body finally said, "You can't do this anymore." Maintaining that level of commitment and focus is an enormous energy draw, and eventually I just deflated. I love you, Brandon Gilbert! Your "brutal" honesty is something that's well overdue.

Brandon, what a great presentation. Loved it.
Great insights into life and relationships. Forwarding this to my kids (18-23 yrs old).

Thanks for your insight Brandon :)
that is so crazy true!!!!
I love you and your whiteboard, bro.
Catering to attention deficit disorder... Lol
Refreshing perspective thank you.
I don’t think happiness is a fake sort of desire. If happiness is treated as fake, then, what hope is left in living in this world. There will be no meaning in life if people see emotions as fake. What is the use of achievements or success if emotions are blank?
17:35 was great. have we dated the same girl in the past??? ;-)
Thanks for sharing! There's a lot of good things to think about. This is me validating you and telling you how great you are haha just kidding :)
This is completely foreign to everything about my life. You might as well be speaking a different language. (My God, I'm more fucked than I even first believed!)
I think I need to hit rewind and watch again.
I found this very difficult to watch when it could've been 10 minutes.
i grew to like the video and your personality in the end
"Catering to ADD" hahahah for fudge sake hahah i have that. When you said that line holy fudge hahahahah
Fuck off. I thought it was just the right speed. Where U from foo'. Okie.
LOL love the way he explain thigs
The points on the eating/exercise lifestyles were pointless and judgemental. The rest was pretty interesting though!
Great content, but I find it hard to trust you with you being unaware of random strands of your hair just standing up for no reason.
Check out Dr Frank Kinslow
will do :)
I don't see how stress hormones and adrenaline could give you a natural high
consider why people love extreme sports, horror/thriller movies, piercings, tattoos, sky diving, bungee jumping, etc, etc.
Brandon Gilbert
I see. So it's like the combination of risk/reward, danger/relief chemicals.
That makes sense.
Nice video but I think you are being very judgemental :-D
