    True story. When Viggo Mortensen was filming for the movie "Captain Fantastic" in Washington state, he had to speak a couple of lines of Chinese. The people making the movie contacted my Chinese teacher (who is not into movies at all) through the language school she was teaching at then. They picked her up in Seattle and drove her to the set in a limo, and she spent a few hours there teaching Viggo the correct pronunciation of the Chinese lines he had to speak, then they drove her back. She got something like $200 for the time she spent teaching him. She had no idea who he was. Later that week, when we met for our Chinese lesson, she told me that she had taught "some Danish actor, his name was like 'Vig' or something" how to say his lines. I was like, "Vig? Do you mean Viggo?!" She said, "Oh yeah, that was it." My eyes about popped out of my head. I asked her, "Do you know how famous he is?!?" She really didn't know. She'd never watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies and had no idea who he was, but she said he was a really nice guy.

The same goes for people with natural proficiency with music too. I’ve tried learning no less than 5 different instruments, one for as long as 4 years, and I could never understand how to read sheet music or play even slightly well.

      Maybe it's a prejudice but native English speakers are not exposed to other languages as much as native Spanish speakers for example. We see many movies in English and hear a lot of songs which makes English a very familiar language for us, also Spanish and Italian languages are very similar so it's even easier for us.

    • @cgimovieman
      @cgimovieman ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Oh I totally agree. Especially in the United States most kids are barely taught anything in the way of a second language until nearly high school. Most other countries, even Canada with French, are exposed to other languages much earlier on. It’s a whole lot harder to fluently learn other languages and for them to be natural at an older age. I wish that could change in the U.S. It’s a little arrogant to just assume everyone else should just learn your own language, and then you don’t learn theirs. I’ve always been pretty naturally inept with a few things like languages, math, and reading music. But I think had I started with a 2nd or 3rd language at a very young age, I could have learned them pretty well. But today? Phew, I think it may be a little late. The best I can do are a few short phrases or niceties. But I do make it a point to learn those when I visit another country, out of respect. Things like please, thank you, excuse me, congratulations, those kinds of things.

    • @jensmikkelsen1071
      @jensmikkelsen1071 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way you really learn a language fast is by using it in real life. Be it because you live somewhere the language is spoken, or because you use it for work or some other reason. If you went to another country and had to use it every day you would learn it in a matter of months. At least to a degree that lets you do your job. And that's without cheating, if you just hang out with english speakers or avoid local people you will not learn anything. And you will learn how people really speak, which is usually not the way instructors do.

    • @lissandrafreljord7913
      @lissandrafreljord7913 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Italian, Catalan, and to a lesser extent French, are very easy once you know Spanish, since they are all Romance languages. The Argentine accent also has a very strong Italian cadence, due to the influence of Italian immigrants. If you heard him in Green Book speak some Sicilian Italian, he does a great job. Then Swedish and Norwegian are also very closely related to Danish, as they are all Scandinavian languages. Arabic would definitely be the hardest and most impressive if he learned it fluently.

    How can anyone learn so many languages -- Viggo Mortensen is an incredible actor, but also an incredible man!

  • @frtdas
    @frtdas 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    When you start with three languages as he did (born in the USA from a danish father, then living in Argentina for the first 10 years of his life) it's not that difficult to learn other languages: He surely got to swedish and norwegian through danish (they are quite similar) and to italian and catalan through spanish (which is closely related to both of them). Learning french could have been quite easy for him too, given that he already spoke two or three romance languages. In these conditions, learning a new language is like crossing a river by jumping from a rock to the next (i.e. the languges you already know). What really outstands in all this is his knwoledge of arabic: that's a language which has very little to do with the other languages he speaks. And that's why I call him a polyglot.

    Once you learn two or three you start to generalize aspects of the languages. Grammar has similarities and differences, vocabulary has a lot of similarities depending the procedente of the language (Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan are Latin languages as well as I think 50-70% of English vocabulary). So all this makes it easier to increment the number. If he did that as a kid, even easier, specially to master the pronunciation and accents.
