- I can't believe that I started to record this video over three and a half months ago. It's been a long time coming, my youtube channel is in neglect, an incredibly sad close family situation that I prefer not to openly discuss has occupied my heart and mind and still does today.
But here anyway, and finally, is my long overdue tribute to the Uno Synth Pro X, a wonderful instrument that everyone seems to overlook these days. In a world where synth releases costing multiple thousands are now becoming "the norm", I honestly think we need to re-evaluate our desires, our budgets, and our needs. The Uno Synth Pro X is a true budget synth that punches very far above its weight. And no, I am not being sponsored by IK Multimedia, I have no relationship with them or their distributors, I buy my own gear with my own money and I get no discounts from anyone.
Whatever you are going through at the moment Tim, just know that each video you make is exactly what somebody needs to help them cope with what they are going through.
Tim, you are absolutely correct. This is an incredibly underrated synth.
Great video 😀👍
In this mad crazy world I find your videos reassuring
Re: Short Decay Times. Tim, there are a number of ways to produce decay times longer than those provided by the default envelopes. i) Use an inverse envelope by setting a negative modulation amount in the mod matrix. This converts a rising attack CV into a falling (decay) CV at the destination. Thus the longer env attack time becomes a long decay time. Probably need to set env sustain at max too. ii) The LFO fade in times can be used as decay sources in the mod matrix. Either of them can extend up to 10 seconds, and you can also change the shape of the curves. iii) Use an envelope from external modular or semi-modular gear via the CV in at the back of the Uno Synth. Like you, I love this synth.
Hoping you stay strong mate. We miss your TH-cam work
I swear you'd make a soggy newspaper sound sweet TS. Best wishes with all you have going on Sir...
Powerful little synth, but too much menu diving for me... I like mono synths with no settings and presets, but that's just me. I can run them from different midi channels, and I'm happy with that, but I love watching you work these little menu diving machines and making them sound so great. Thank you for that!
Wonderful demo, thank you so much for sharing. Wishing you all the best always, my friend.
On the envelope thing, that's one quality the wind synth players look for. An immediate attack for precise articulation. Agree a long decay is always a good option for drones and such. This is near the top of the list of synths I would consider purchases (I have the original Uno Synth now and I'm quite pleased with how it pairs with the breath controller.
Uno Synth Pro X seems to have thoroughly thought their architecture through. thanks for vid Tim.
That sounds really good. Punching above its weight price-for-sound-wise.
Hi Tim, I hope you will overcome your current family situation. Thanks for this video and wishing you all the best!
Hi Tim.
You've opened my eyes to this synth. It was never really on my radar to be honest, but your concise and very informative review has made me think about it a lot more seriously.
Thanks very much!
Cheers ✌️
Thanks for sharing a personal note, Tim. I trust more hopeful days ahead for you and yours.
Always a great demo Tim.
All the best. thoughts are with you.
That looks so much fun Tim. I'm tempted 😁
Re your channel, you and your family comes first, and anyone who loves your work will stick around.
Take care now. I look forward to what comes next 😊
I agree with you, it's a big sounding synthesizer that not many people take seriously.
Really appreciate the videos you create Tim, thanks for putting the time in, especially when times are tough. All the best to you and the Uno Synth is incredible bang for the buck! =)
Thanks much for this Mr Shoebridge. I’m a great admirer of your work!
Even all his Behringer work?
I'm planning on getting a Micromonsta 2 next, but damn this synth looks tempting. One little thing I wish it did differently is VCO tuning - I wish it had coarse tuning by octave. As a performance feature, it's nice to be able to make one oscillator jump an octave on the fly while the other(s) stay put. I also wish it had a proper mixer section with mute buttons (again, a nice performance feature to have, and something I wish more synths had) instead of a single shared level knob, but that would require a larger form factor. As a less flexible compromise, maybe IK could've put the ring mod on the sync button, and added mute as the secondary function of the osc button.
Thanks Tim. Appreciated.
Hey Tim, blasting some good vibes in your direction this evening. I hope you're doing well.
As always i love your own music the best. No matter the synth. But I agree that this synt seems nice. Stay strong, take your time and don't worry about neglecting the channel. We will be waiting for you.
Hey Tim, don't feel too pressured on the TH-cam front. It's normal to go through stretches where you need to recharge batteries or just put effort into other things that require attention. Ultimately I think people are tuning in to see you so it's not like they can get that elsewhere. Maybe when you get back to it just go full punk and just do whatever for a little while lol... you deserve to take it easy a bit and I bet people would be just as interested in the content.
Your video gave me a touch of GAS.
Top notch, as always. Great camera work and visual effects. This is one I've seriously considered, and would pair with my Therevox, when it's finally delivered. Due to sanctions, Russian synths are unavailable, but if you want to borrow an Infradeep PVX800 (Polyvox clone) for review, happy to send one.
That's a great and very thorough video. Very interesting and valid point about the decay stage of the ADSR envelopes. I just uploaded my own first impressions video on the same synth and I like it a lot.
What an awesome intro to this video Tim! 👊🏼
Thank you for a great insightful video . I have just got mine and my oh my - packs a punch and is very addictive . it's taken over from much of other hardware . 😎
Fantastic review Tim. I absolutely love mine too and agree with everything you said
Tastefully done. Very much appreciated, Tim.
Beautiful as always, and thoughts with you!
There is a tiny Facebook group for the uno series but its my last Synth that leaves the studio. Small, but love the modmatrix.. like you said its like an analog wavetable.. the FILTERS wow,. Cv in and out the list Goes on and on. Could you please explain how you use the sequencer poly out? Ok i worked it out just press 3 knops at the same time. But can it be sent over 3 midi outs?
Hi Tim, loved this video. Very useful, thanks. While I have some overlap with other synths, the hand on nature of the UI of this instrument especially, make it very compelling. I may end up picking one up. I went digging with the PDF manual after what you said about the decay time, and on page 17 it states "DECAY
Sets the amount of time needed to go from peak to the specified sustain level. The range is 0.1 ms to 30 sec." so is the manual wrong, since you only got 3 seconds? Maybe it's behaviour changes in Bassline mode? Anyway that's just something I thought of. Nice to see the Supernova rack in your setup, I remember those and the keyboard version - again, a nice UI.
Brilliant UNO sequel
100% agree! This is one of my favorite monosynths. It’s so powerful, usable, and well thought out in a compact enclosure.
Not buying this thing until IK changes their policies: you have to register to get firmware updates; and then you have to pay them to transfer ownership.
That’s crazy! Thanks for the info.
Registration is pretty much standard with most synths, etc, for warranty, so I don't see that as an issue. The transfer of ownership thing is a bit odd though.
@@TheDavidPoole true that.
@@TheDavidPooleThey are trying to farm their customers for data so they can sell it. This guy warning you about shady business practices is doing gawds work.
Oof hard pass.
Hey Tim, is that a Moog Muse under the cover???
When will we get a new Uno Drum... It sounds so good but doesn't have an enjoyable interface
On the 'env decay length'. I spent a lot of time reverse engineering the original Uno Synth, and for that it was possible to set paramters directly with SysEx - and for some you could set value outside of the range achievable with knob/editor/cc.
Guessing that the same might be possible with the Pro/Pro-X
Very nice sounding! 👍
For those in the U.S., Sweetwater currently has all of the Uno Synths on sale. The original Uno Synth is only $130 USD and the Pro X is $400.
Thanks for this, it show me the love for my synth in a new light again! Amazing work they do here.. i just don‘t liked the interface of the first version.. but this is a big improvement! 🔥
Thanks Tim ! I’m looking at the Roland S1 too…
Don't by the S1, it's too frustrating to use to enjoy.
I’ve owned the Roland S1 for more than a year now, and I can tell you it’s my go-to for mono synth sounds. While it’s true that accessing its more in depth features can be tedious, the og sh-101 sound is managed knob per function
I used the red keyboard one on a bunch of my songs on my channel, u can see it on if there was a reason. but it is on every synth track, every fat bass line. check it out!
Great intro into this synth, Tim, Another complaint I have is there is no on/off switch, for the price IK Multi should have included one, I hate having to unplug it to turn it off every time.
Are you aware of long pressing HOLD to take it in/out of sleep mode? I also find a synth without a power button irritating but IMO this sleep mode is the next best thing.
@@trepan4096 I missed that function, thanks, but it will not be a long term solution for powering down, when I am not using the synth for awhile.
I kove this synrh and had to buy a second one too. so good (I'm new to sound design and this makes it super easy to explore and noodle)
When the Uno was first announced I was quite interested and was sure I'd get one. But there's just something about the sound that leaves me cold.
With clock so 2 of them you can do more complex song design?
LTNS Tim, hope you're in good spirits.
did you use any processing on the signal of the recorded synthesizer like computer plugins, compressor, etc; was the recording sent directly to a mixer or audio interface?
No external processing. Everything you hear is straight from the synth.
@@TimShoebridge thank you very much for your reply.
27:15 So you like TangerineDream :)
I have the Uno Synth Pro desktop. It is not good for bass but perfect for these type of sequencing tracks.
Thanks
I blame Roland's Seventies' era SH monos......❤❤❤
very surprised by the price of this synth considering how nice it sounds
Very good demo. Cheers❤
I use it in almost every project
thumbs up Tim !!
Hey Tim, I’ve got the Uno Synth Pro keyboard version, and it terribly suffers from oscillators bleeding. What about the Pro X ?
I've had none of those issues with the Pro X. The Pro's are USB powered aren't they, I've had various sound issues with them due to that. The Pro X comes with a dedicated PSU which is very welcome.
@@TimShoebridge the bleeding was there from the beginning, even with regular power without USB. Good news however: if you don’t have it, it might be a calibration issue to do with the VCA envelope on ‘y device only. Will need to open it up then. Thanks for the presentation, by the way. Greetings from Belgium.
@@newignis What you could do is plugin the device by midi instead, it drastically decreased oscillator bleed for me.
Midi is connected internally using light instead of a direct circuit, which is likely why there isn't so much bleed.
@@sotem3608 I indeed always connect any USB powered device via DIN Midi to prevent the typical loopback noise. For that purpose I’ve invested in 3 MioXL to do that trick for me. But here I’m referring to the last pitch of all three oscillators still being audible when the instrument is not played.
I see, that's very unfortunate.
Why not refund and ask for a new one?
Did you also try while not having the device connected, but by using a headphone?
Could this thing do good basses for rap genres?
Killer drums sounds at 6:40. Has nothing to do with the Uno Pro X. But great sounding drums all around!
I think Axel Hartmann designed the ux
If only IK could add midi poly chaining on the pro and x
There must be lower price ways to build a polysynth. I'm using a Sequentix Cirklon to to poly chaining.
Those drums at 8m what are they? Wicked sound .
Yamaha Montage?
Hey Tim. Off topic question, if you please. About to embark on Behringer pro 800 number 2.
Knee jerk, I thought: I need to Buy Tim’s POLY-CHAINING SOFTWARE.
I watched Daniel Fisher of Sweetwater DEMO a 2 Pro 800s setup. He said, ‘connect both synths to DAW, pain one Left and one Right and yours done!’
Well, the Pro 800 does NOT have poly chaining built in, so I guess Daniel just had two Cubase tracks with panning left and right ?
Anyway, with YOUR SOFTWARE ,I’d have far more
Choices about note allocations, wouldbt I ?
A restatement of my connections:
If You were going to connect 2 Pro 800 synths for the purpose of havingn16 voices instead of 8, and you had no Poly Chain software, how would you do it?
Thanks!
Mark
Hi. The idea of my polychain software is that it allocates notes dynamically to your synths as you play (or playback using a DAW). The software knows what notes you have held down, are still playing, maybe you have sustained them, etc etc, it knows the polyphony count of your synths and can allocate notes optimally.
Just connecting two synths directly to a DAW without something intelligent doing the note allocation is not extending your effective polyphony, it is just playing two synths at the same time.
If you buy the polychain software you can always ask for a refund within a reasonable timeframe if it does not work out for you, Cherry Audio are great in this regard re. Voltage Modular modules 👍

Tim, if you mind terribly to give just a two minute listen to the referenced video. Fisher talks about 'TWO synths panned and thus, TRUE STERO.
I've written to him a couple of times, asking what software interface might be involved. He's replied to me once ever so not expecting anything.
YOU....may know,a AT A GLANCE, what he's doing.
I agree with you that, on its face, it seems like nothing more than TWO 8-voice synths, triggered on the same midi channel.
Thanks Tim.
@@watchaddicts1213He's just playing the same notes on both synths at the same time. The fact that the synths are analogue means the sound will be very subtly different at any point in time, so if you pan one hard left and the other hard right you will get a pleasing stereo effect. That's all he's doing 👍
@@TimShoebridge See!! I KNEW you and your Big Brain would SEE it immediately. Bless you for helping the mentally handicapped, Tim!
So..? So there WOULD Be more fun to be had employing your PolyChain Software, correct? I guess as simple as voice ping pong to all all the other variations you've worked into it, true?
So this is no difference than me opening TWO instances of Minimonsta 2, setting both to MidI Channel 1, arming each track to Record, such that when play a note on Monster Track 1, the same note sound on Monssta Track 2, even though I'm not playing Track 2's keyboard. Some degree of panning for track 1 and same degreee in opposite [tone] direction. Then small detune of one track from the other.
Is that more or less the deal? Thanks again, Tim.
@@watchaddicts1213 Yes, dynamic allocation of notes is what you really want and that pan spread effect... like you get on most sequential synths.
Dust magnet!
Its a great synth that looks like a toy. i think its something they can change as it a great price for what your getting.

A keyboard version please 🙏
I hate this brand. Wouldn’t rely on the build quality at all.
