The Porsche 718 Spyder RS is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling open air sports cars on sale today. Loud, fast and damn near as sharp as the track-focused Cayman GT4 RS, it’s a fitting send-off for the Boxster name. However, Ariel reckons its latest 4R missile is even more extreme - and without any windows, doors or a windscreen (plus the small matter of 400bhp with a 700kg kerb weight) it’s hard to disagree. CAR magazine’s James Dennison heads to South Wales in December to give both a thorough winter test.

Which would you buy? Porsche or Ariel...?
Im the biggest Porsche fan, and this Boxster Spyder RS is pretty much my dream car. But the Ariel is guaranteed to have your heart pumping more than any other road car.
Ariel every single day.
Porsche
Porsche hands down - for many reasons, I am also a sucker for design and the Porsche looks awesome is already a classic, the Ariel looks....well not good.
I bought the Ariel❤😎
One of the very best presenters on TH-cam , great passion and delivery, keep up the great work 👍
Thank you!

"Skiing is a great winter sports, but nothing beats unexpectedly turning into a werewolf and eating six people before running off into the Welsh Moors and finding a log cabin to hide in before returing to a human state"
😂 can i have some of what you're having...... please
Spyder can be only car, Atom is pure crazy fun, on my second Spyder and it’s one of the best looking Porsche and most fun to drive with open top. Great video !!!!
The Atom is not a "car" it's a street legal go cart. Nice novelty...
Spyder RS all day!
Details details… 😉
the "legal" can be in quotes too.
I dunno I think given the price, for how much slower it is compared to the 4R it feels a bit more of the novelty to me
That novelty makes far more sense than the porsche when you're a track rat
Both great cars and both exciting, as James brought to life. As a GT4RS owner I have been given a Spyder RS allocation. If James can drive it without the top in winter without gloves, I should be able to enjoy it in Australia where we average 8 hours sunshine a day. James is right about the Porsche engine (and the gearbox). Worth it for the admission price.
I have just come back to the UK from a holiday in Australia. You are lucky to have good roads and weather to enjoy those cars. Interesting you chose fairly similar cars, but then, I guess why not.
These two are my favorite cars right now.
Off the scale entertaining video. Great production and one of the best presenters there is. Cars were pretty cool to 😁👌
Thanks!
What an awesome video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed!
They will never be able to make an EV that can invoke the emotion, involvement and character of either of these cars......especially that Ariel, what a machine.
Correct, all the more reason to NOT buy EV cars...
Power of the purse.
These cars will never invoke the emotion and character of my horse-drawn carriage. And that makes it objectively better.
Until they do … let’s wait before saying anything
@@dr1311 agreed. Electric motors will bring the capability of precisely under and over rotating individual wheels as required into/during/out of corners and this will give a level of driving experience never before achievable. It will allow average drivers to control their car as if it's being driven by a pro rally driver. It's going to be truly sensational and I can't wait.
yeah they will. once you die the new generation won't know anything else.
That dump valve gearbox splurge sounds amazing.
I realy like the atom be lets be honest a bit, wich one is the most practical? wich one is the most secure? wich one can be use any day of the year? The porsche.
... but yes i'm maybe not the most impartial guy :P
Both amazing machines in there own rite & for what they are price wise I’d say they’re quite cheep!
Fantastic roads there…. Where abouts are you in the UK pls🤔
Great vid. That manual roof has always been a fail for me though.
Thanks!
Anyone know what roads in South Wales these are?
A4107 I believe.
NEVER EVER heard of the Atom til this video 😮😮😮😮
You need to get out more😂😂
The Porsche is alright a bit common, but the Atom is fantastic in a different league.
I’d take a Porsche any day of the week an one day, one day I will get one.. but that road even in the wet looks like a nice fun day out for us dads.. anyone on the name of it.. on me to do list
Genuine q.
So what has been done to that Honda engine to get it up to 400hp?
Pretty sure every CTR owner is thinking 'hmmmm id like 400hp'
Thanks, i enjoyed that video
According to Atom, it's a remap along with the additional cooling we spoke about in the video.
See CAR magazine web article for more info: www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/ariel/atom-4r/
Would you give up a MT spyder for the RS?
Same question here. I have a RS coming in June and have to trade my 718 MT Spyder….still in doubt, no matter I have a 992 GT3 in manual too
@@bill9629 you fancy
I’d do it. The engine alone is worth it.
Ariel Atom ftw, but that price tag defeats the orginal purpouse of this car
Not really, the Atom was all about perf/$ which it’s still achieving incredibly well.
Wooooooowwwww. Bravo Porsche💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏
The ariel still don't have COC paper. So in plenty of countries it's not road legal at all (especially after brexit) so hard to call it "road car". but I get the fun of the test of course.
But in the UK it’s a perfectly legal road car and was designed to be from the outset. There are many cars that aren’t homologated for every country.
@@Car10121-s KIT cars, and cars like westfield .. but these cars are not road leagal cars in most countries.
Exception is the KTM Xbow for example have even COC paper and legal everywhere.
@@FreestylerAlbert yea as I explained in my post.
@@Car10121-s so there isn't many cars at the end. As you wrote incorrectly "many".
@@FreestylerAlbert yes more than that.
Hurtling down an empty slope while skiing? Since when? Resorts are so damn packed good luck with that.
Go to Canada
Dreams ❤
The mighty bwlch mountain road. One of the best in the world 🌎
I’ll take the Ariel as a daily thanks
And for that amount of money not even a LED lights on Ariel? !
dope
The „twittering“ noises coming from the Ariel engine I personally find disturbing and weird.
This car is even way more a TOY than the 718 RS.
When you say “you can buy” the car today, well, not really. And if you can it’s up to and over $300K for it.
If you’re speaking about an Atom and in the same sentence you say „more insanity“ things are pretty clear right there 🤣
👏🏻
how can you even compare two absolutely different vehicles, a car VS somewhat version of a buggy/bike??? makes no sense to me...
Just for a bit of fun!
It’s a huge compliment to the car, imo
You lost me when you said the price of the 718. To think of the other cars that are just as good that you could get for that money such as a caterham or lotus elise or alpine etc
None of them have any engine on that level, though 👀
Porsche, of courshe!!
140k for no comfort I’d rather have a super bike
If Porsche made a GT4/Spyder RS with a manual gearbox, hydraulic steering, no interfering computers/driving aids and no touchscreens (All buttons), that would've been the best sports car in "the last 25 years". The current one, not much. The 987/997 had way more engagement and raw feedback than these will ever offer. So, I'm gonna keep mine for now. Ignorant buyers and dummies who think newer is better may buy the 718.
Ridiculous comparison and cant think of anyone the would consider the pair!!!
Just a bit of fun between two extreme cars that are built for driver enjoyment!
Why choose? Just get both! Video made for the rich.
Porsche is a car, and Ariel is a toy. So I want both of them 😅
170mph in an Ariel Atom? Yikes. Even 130mph would terminally close one's sphincter. Might be for the brave. Foolish. Or both.
Roof. Always. Down.
The Porsche engine and gearbox is on a different level, one is a well manufactured car with one of the worlds great production engines and drivelines the other is a toy.
Ariel Atom is a widow maker, PORSHAAAA 4EVA !
Only if you think you know how to, but in all reality your level is a Smart car...
A very strange comparison.
Not really rivals though, as said ‘winter weapons’.
Sadly this guy does not know his cars.
The atom is 567kg as a curb weight, not 700kg.
I also read a reply from him on here that claimed Caterham could not compete with these two engine wise.
Er...... what ?
I stopped watching.
If you want to build a career as a journalist, report facts and make sure you know your field please.
wasnt even you driving in the action shots ...fake
While James can do many things, he can’t drive two cars at the same time - hence why we had a second driver.
What are you implying is fake here?😂
NO ONE buys a 718/Boxster because of its ..engine. Same as no one buys a 718/Boxster, when all they want is a...911
It actually handles better with the mid engine chassis, numerous reviews have stated this. And this car cost quite a bit more than an 911 with the exception of GT3 and up, if you can get one, plus huge markup, so it’s not exactly a bargain basement car. 🙄🙄
I did. 718 Spyder. Better looking and better balanced.
Why would you want a 911 over a Cayman?
@@R03333, totally agree with you...
I owned a 987.2 S and it was a quantum leap in front of a 911 in the handling department...
Even pitched against later iterations of the 911 on a winding road,
it was boringly easy to either stay behind or if already in front, pull away...
This is a really dumb take
