    By far one of the best rock guitarists I've heard. The guy can play rhythm AND lead like nobody's business. The atmosphere he creates (especially with the power windows era) is truly amazing. The solos are always fitting too. Never overdone or too showy, just the right amount and perfect fit. I agree with others comments, do an icon series with him. There needs to be a definitive story on this guitarist and his journey over the years as a musician.

  • @shawnmcvey7789

    Lifeson approached prog parts with the power of a rock player but also had the uncommon ability to distill his ideas into the perfect size for the song.
    I've always admired and have been influenced by how he uses different chord shapes and inversions so fluidly. It's so creative but gives such an energy.

    Everyone talks about Alex’s solos on this song and that song but I feel his strength was in his rhythm playing. Being in a three piece band he had to learn how to fill out the sound with his rhythm guitar playing and he did so in a wonderful way. Another guitarist that comes to mind in this regard is Pete Townshend. Phenomenal rhythm guitar player.

    • @aschule5684
      @aschule5684 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 💯 I never thought his solos were his primary attraction, Alex had the most unique chord voicings of anyone I've ever heard. Not just what he played but how he played it. Just popping into mind upon writing this "Grace Under Pressure" and "Roll The Bones" have great stand out examples of this"The Camera Eye" another. The whole of "Vapor Trails" has not 1 solo on the whole album! He consciously crafted each song not to include guitar solos because of the importance of that album coming back together after tragedy struck Neil and they fell into limbo uncertain of their continuation as a band. He didn't want it to in any way make one part of the music stand apart from the rest or be about him. Alex is so unique in his style a huge influence on me from my teen years in the 70's when I first heard RUSH I also agree with the "Pete Townshend" comment, a monster talent and guitar player! Love Pete and The Who!

    • @DavidBrumbeloeJr
      @DavidBrumbeloeJr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aschule5684 I excessively use Alex's chord voicings. I love them and they suck the listener in, whether they realize it or not. In many ways his chord voicings show nuances of chord progressions and voicings I learned studying Joe Pass material, though not the same, they are very enticing and intriguing.

    • @manakin5
      @manakin5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YES. Exactly. Over the years I've come to appreciate Alex's deep brilliance at coming up with such excellent harmonic textures and soundscapes, his chords and tones. He does have some really outstanding solos of course, but what he accomplished with rhythm guitar and that more subtle composition to create the great Rush songs cannot be overstated.

      @MusicissuperiorEVHROX316 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s a rhythm section roughly three minutes into Xanadu. I think he was using the twelve string on his doubleneck with all his usual effects on it because his tone on the chords is both lukewarm and ice cold. It’s simply amazing.

    I'm 71 and started playing in 1966 and played my first party in 1967, (Wild Thing, Hanky Panky, stones) the same stuff everyone else was learning, by late 67 a friend sold me a Double Cut Jr which I played and destroyed over 12 years.
    When Rush and Van Halen came along, I was still trying to figure out Johnny Winter and Montrose.
    I was in luck because none of the drummers that I was playing with could play Rush and I was totally lost. In the 80s I met a guy that could sing Rush and Play Geddy Lee, so We played 3 tunes along with Police and of course Hendrix, then In the 90s I met another Bassist that could sing Geddy. So Half the World can and Half the World can't.

    Owning a standard guitar of known high quality like a Gibson Les Paul Standard is a great education for a guitarist who has not had access to such a thing before. Great guitars of course (I love mine) but they will also dispel some of the _mythology_ surrounding such instruments versus cheaper ones. I was surprised to discover that my much cheaper guitars were better than I thought they were and their actions were not actually bad. Not only are the Gibson Les Pauls etc wonderful guitars to own they give you a better perspective on electric guitars in general; a solid reference (no pun intended).

    I was lucky enough to get the chance to play a cherry 69' ES 335 at The Arts Music in Newmarket, and honestly I can see why Alex fell in love with his sunburst 68'. The neck was thin and so fast, and the guitar overall had such a great balance in the hands, there really was nothing else like it. I almost couldn't put it down. Unfortunately I couldn't afford it, but it inspired me to begin work on a kit based on that very same guitar. Alex has been such an inspiration for me as a guitarist, and I can't thank him enough.

    My first Gibson, July 3, 1976, a mid-60's ES-335 12-string. I never played it with 12. A wonderful guitar for country, rock, and jazz. The neck is a bit thin at 1-9/16 but you get used to it. Last year I FINALLY replaced the saddle pieces and nut with 6-string saddle pieces and nut. Yep, I play that guitar almost every day... 47 years later. I also bought a Montana SJ-200 several years back and I bought an Epiphone Les Paul 4 or 5 years ago. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. I love my 335. Oh, I also have a Heritage 575. What is really impressive to me is during the 80s when RUSH was heavier into synths, Alex still found a way to cut through. Many of his tones and structures were so good. One example is his live guitar solo on "Force Ten" from "Show of Hands". I wish that was extended a little more, because it was some beautiful stuff.

    This may be the Gibson TV channel, but I've got the PRS A15AL(Alex Lifeson signature model) acoustic guitar. It's a thinline body and the best acoustic I've ever had.

    That's how I felt when I got my first strat, it was so light and easy to play the action was much better than my..... well whatever I had back then, can't remember but it was cheap.
    Still love a strat, but there's something marvelous about an SG or a les paul it of course feels different. Although I do prefer playing the SG if I'm just sitting down noodling. The LP has a bit more weight 😊, marvelous instruments though, such a great tone.

    Legend, I recall the early days of L&M but I think he was going to the original store in Yorkville and I was doing sort of the same thing at the 2nd location on Bloor Street in the Annex. I was also infactuated with a LH LP Goldtop back then. Alex is a real legend indeed.

    Big Al started off on a Gibson LP, then got the ES 335, (or was it the other way around?). I remember he went through the Fender type guitar stage having the Red Strat and the white "Hentor Sportscaster, lol. Then as time went on, he gravitated towards the Gibson LP, with the Floyd Rose whammy on it, which is now his signature guitar. I'm a HUGE Lifeson fan. His playing is so unique. Everybody loves that "F# Lifeson chord", aka, The "Hemispheres chord". Lol.

    The 335 is an iconic instrument, but it takes a serious musician to play one well - hello Alex !! 😁I have too many favourites to nail it down to one track, but I guess, 'Natural Science' is in the top two.

      Took 30 years and many hours to arrive at the same conclusion. The flow between the several movements, the force in the music, the thoughtful lyrics. Can say that about many of their songs but in Natty it all just comes together. Lasts forever and ends at the exact perfect time. Maybe 2-3 other rock bands all time could pull off a song like that.

    Great vid. Such an inspiring player - skillful, inventive, expressive... Fly By Night was the first song I learned in guitar lessons. From there, I used to come home from school every day and play along to all four sides of All the World's a Stage - whether I knew the parts or not:)

    I always get a smile when I hear guys like Alex talk about the Beach Boys. I wonder when he realized Tony Tedesco was playing on all those songs. Neil Peart learned about Hal Blaine early in on. So it I be curious to know when Alex realized who was playing on all those songs.

    Alex Lifeson is so down to earth. To think that when Rush was still a garage band, I was a young American in Toronto, oblivious. Bucket-list item: Buy Alex a beer. I’ll even do a Sink the Bismarck if he’s game! 🤠

    All the world's a Stage...."Bytor and the Snowdog"....When Alex did his lead thing in the middle, he created sounds I'd never heard on a guitar before. Sure, he had his effects, but the notes he came up with were all him. He never played it note for note the same way. I'm just glad they taped that one for the record........ I've been a huge fan ever since. There are better technical players, more flashy players, but no one "hears" notes and chords on a guitar like Alex.
