I agree with you. I think her heart was broken when she wrote this song, she had lost faith in humanity and had to tell herself to pull through. She really is a World treasure.
I think that weirdly makes the modern performances more heartwarming. It’s so beautiful to see that she endured the storm she was forced through the 90s and the early 2000s and she is now in a much better place. The energy she carries here is like “See? You made it. You did it. I’m so proud of you”.

Mariah's songs helped me a lot during my formative years. From my first exposure to HERO, her songs just amazed me and uplifted me at the same time. But on the technical side of things, I now appreciate how difficult it is to sing this song live. Mariah's live version is nowhere near her studio recording, but still explosive nonetheless. So now I just have so much respect for singers who are brave enough to attempt to sing this live.
