I feel like the tattoos mean a lot actually. The tattoos are known to be markers of criminals in ancient japan. However, if they were ordinary tattoos, they wouldn’t appear 1000 years later when sukuna is in another body. This would imply the tattoos were imprinted onto his soul rather than just his own physical body

Guys have you ever noticed that sukuna's original fingers had different patterns? In chapter 111, Jogo shows ten Sukuna's fingers, and there you can notice that they have different shapes, for example, one resembles dirt, and other resembles wood, and other, ice.
I have seen and really like this theory. My only issue is that if that was the case Yuta probably wouldn’t have been able to use cleave by feeding a finger to Rika, since that finger wouldn’t have been the slicing finger.

But I think Sukuna is able to look at the ingredients of the soul/someones cursed energy he’s second only to Gojo and the only reason why Gojo is more capable in that regard is because of the 6 eyes. I think once Sukuna sees the ingredients once he’s able to use is knives to shape it into whatever he desires. It would explain why Yuta is able to gain cleave and copy it but Sukuna is probably looking at them like you don’t even know what you’re really holding. These knives essentially can cut and “refine” cursed energy however I like as long as I know the ingredients. I can see his technique being something super basic like that but also extremely over powered because he’s overpowered

I think maki is getting fire arrowed because of her first death by Jogo it was a hint of things to come and arrow that always hits its target and doesn’t just pierce her but devour her as a whole no cursed energy needed

Replicating kenjaku to learn how to turn into a cursed object , replicating jogo to use fire arrow, replicating mahoraga to use world slash. Yeah, it actually makes sense how "sukuna can learn any techniques just by seeing it once" if his technique truly is "refinement"
I also thought of this theory once, but I kinda of thought that it was too broken even for Sukuna. It is basically Sukuna being able to attribute a particular property to his cursed energy , similar to cursed energy traits. He can pass his cursed energy through the brain ( the part responsible for jujutsu in general) and also manipulate it to obtain the cursed energy that he desires because overusing it prob causes brain damage. I am imagining it is similar to how reverse cursed energy is processed in the head. It also explains why he understood what Gojo was doing by healing his CT using RCT. Edit: But now that I think about it, the reason Sukuna wasnt able to emulate Mahoraga's first adaptation of altering the essence of its cursed energy, because it was something he was not able to do . Maybe it is an extremely advanced form of sorcery which involves manipulating the part of the brain responsible for the cursed technique to change the target of the cursed technique.
Maybe he can only assign one trait to his cursed energy at a time. For example, cleave and dismantle might normally have the CE trait of being "sharp", meaning he couldn't then apply Mahoraga's CE trait to bypass infinity without losing the ability to use his cursed energy for cleave and dismantle. If he did change his trait to bypass infinity then he would just be punching Gojo with cursed energy, which he could already do with Domain Amplification anyways.

Sukuna changing the nature of his cursed energy and doing other CT's like hitting Jogo with fire is what I had initially thought. But Kinda dumped it out cause Sukuna said that he can't change the essence of his CE. Hence why he couldn't copy what Mahoraga did in the first adaptation.

I think the very first finger bearer fight could also relate to Sukuna in some fashion. The finger bearer did not have a technique it was just firing out bursts of cursed energy. Sukuna could have a similat technique which on paper would be garbage tier for most people as it is very generic, but when pushed to its utter limits we have Sukuna
The basis for your theory is very well fleshed and thought out. I'm just offering some food for thought as additions to the ideas you presented. JJK over its course has heavily emphasized the importance of body, mind and spirit being directly interlinked, if not being one and the same thing (all the info revealed in arcs involving Yuji, Mahito, Tengen, Kenjaku, Sukuna, Toji etc.). The human body is a physical manifestation of the soul (and vice versa) as presented by Mahito and his ability to alter peoples souls directly. This also means by extension a persons techniques are a reflection of their body (mind) and soul. The "black box" system of the brain was a key piece of info, as the unique structure and makeup of the brain are different person to person, but also hereditary (hence the JJ sorceror clans). This means everyone will have different innate techniques, but people of similar genetics have higher chances to have the same black box and hence innate technique e.g. ten shadows, infinity etc These same rare techniques likely require a very specific black box system in the brain. Further to the black box, it also explains why Mahito can't alter his own soul directly, as he would change/lose his technique doing so, which forces an impossible paradox. Further to all of this. I believe the black box is a conduit or housing for the soul itself, or perhaps a part of it. The evidence is the same evidence you presented e.g. Sukuna visiting everyone he has killed in their "minds" or souls directly. Also everything I mentioned prior. I also believe domain expansions are a physical manifestation of the black box of the brain (which is a conduit/housing to the soul and it's innate techniques) You are expanding the domain of your soul into reality, by opening your black box conduit into the physical world by using a barrier. You literally bring out your innate techniques of the black box housing by opening and manifesting your black box conduit using cursed energy/sorcery, but the condition is to provide a housing (barrier) for said domain. The barrier acts as the box itself. This explains why domains gives sure hit, as you are literally within the inner workings of what creates your innate technique. This is why domains are the epitome of JJ. It is also why barrierless domains are akin to painting a masterpiece without a canvas, because your black box and soul don't need barriers setup as a condition to open up and extend out into reality. Your black box must be freely open by other means. Note how Sukuna has a barrierless domain here. Now onto several theories. Sukuna - his innate technique/s likely involves what you mentioned. Some form of dissimilation i.e. breaking down (dismantle and cleave for physical matter), but he is applying them insanely smartly, to more than just matter e.g. souls. He might do it indirectly by interacting with the black box or conduit/housing of the soul. This would explain many things (appearing to Jogo and other kills, directly in their black box i.e. conduit and housing to the soul). The reverse of this technique would be to assimilate i.e. building up or storing. Sukuna has learnt to break open his black box, as well as the boxes of others. He breaks open their black box, learns the working of the technique, and then builds and assimilates the techniques back into his own black box. He can learn how hereditary techniques work, but cannot store them as those require a specific black box make up i.e. brain. This explains his expert level use of ten shadows. "Fuga" might be Sukuna breaking down i.e. opening his black box, allowing him direct access to his domain holding his techniques and soul. This allows him to directly modify his cursed technique into the other forms he has assimilated or learnt. Sukunas black box or domain, malevolent shrine is also barrierless. Likely because he can freely open his black box conduit to his soul and extend it out into reality freely. He does not need a barrier to contain his domain, he just projects it directly from his open black box brain/conduit to his soul. Sukuna also broke apart his soul into the 20 fingers using his own technique. Just as an aside. Now for even more theories, and to the core of Kenjaku and Yukis commentary of purging jujutsu/cursed energy permanently. Toji and Maki - their Heavenly restrictions likely relate to some hereditary makeup of their black box in their brains. It is likely super inefficient in storing and consuming cursed energy into techniques, given Yukis commentary on Toji when talking to Kenjaku . Hence stored cursed energy is directed from the soul to the body, instead of to manifesting innate cursed techniques. This black box however is so extremely rare and also variable, Toji and Maki are the only known people like this, with "0" apparent CE. Meaning this "solution" of making everyone super inefficient at using CE is not viable at scale. Yuji - is part of Kenjakus puzzle/ alternate answer to Yukis proposal. I think Yuji was born without a soul, he is a "human" cursed object. This distinction is important to make, as he will abide by the mind, body and spirit relationship from earlier. This is why he cannot be targeted by Mahito.The soul is the housing of cursed energy for CT. It's also why he has no CT as he has no soul. I also think he is likely the opposite of a heavenly restriction. He is likely extremely efficient at storing and using CE because of all of this. He has a massive empty battery where his soul should be, and his black box os extremely efficient at using CE. However it's almost like an inverse heavenly restriction though (unholy restriction), so he was born with no technique and no abilities, but with infinite potential. Since he was exposed to housing Sukuna, who juiced him up and exposed him to CE and CT to his black box and empty soul. It is also why he was such a good cage for Sukuna and why he uses black flashes so readily and easily. Lastly, I also think Yuji is part of the solution to the merger. He will likely house all of the souls at the end of all of it. Sukuna will set off the merger using megumis body, break down and merge all the souls into Yuji, who will house them. We will likely get a super bitter ending as everyone essentially dies. Even Sukuna is overwhelmed and killed by Yuji. And Yuji is left essentially cursed to live eternally, holding all the cursed energy in the world.
Low key separating cursed energy and cursed techniques and making it separate with out killing the person it’s a clean extraction and with ur technique gone doesn that mean u have no energy or u have what u can hold then that’s it or do u have no energy because ur technique was extracted now we have maki and toji walking all over

Fuga is an originally German word for English translation Fugue. Fugue is a type of music where there’s one theme repeated over and over but with different styles and techniques interwoven together and developed to be more complex than the theme by itself. Often using lots of counterpoint (a type of music in itself) to overlay the theme. This fits Sukuna very well as well. He has a main theme, but he can use it with many different variations and different techniques, and they’re always a wonderful counter(point) to his enemy. It’s also just a really cool word.
This is one of the most logically thought out JJK theories I've ever heard. The fact that his domain expansion technique is not in an enclosed space like everyone else, is a testament to how long he has been continuously adapting/evolving his power.
Awesome theory and very very close to what I thought may be the truth behind it all. I think you're spot on with the black box thing, but its not an ability he has but rather a super high level and difficult incantation that most sorcerers cannot pull off for various reasons. Something that other sorcerers knew about during the Heian era but have forgotten as time has passed and the difficulty in mastering and using it.
I love the theory, but im pretty sure it was debunked in his fight with gojo. In which if i recall correctly, they explain Maharoga's ability to adapt as well transmuting his cursed energy, which sukuna then says he can't do.
im guessing sukuna's cursed technique is something related to hell and worship. His domain handsign belongs to Enma-Tenin, who is the king of hell and death in Buddism. Thats probably why he can manipulate fire. His cleave and dismantle are definitely related to worship, possibly representing sacrifice, seeing as how theyre slashing attacks. His black box might also be a place where he keeps elements related to worship or hell as well, but one thing we know FOR SURE in the manga is that the "black box" is the area where cursed techniques are stored within the brain, so we dont know the full extent of sukuna's powers yet
nuh uh, there's a ton of things wrong here 1. the black box isn't literal, it's just a censor for something sukuna says before fuga 2. 開 (fuga) just means "open" 3. historical sukuna has two swords and a bow&arrow, implying that jjk sukuna only has dismantle, cleave, and the fire bow and extensions of those like world-cutting slash 4. finger bearer doesn't turn into fire in the manga and kinda just poofs away the sukuna weird soul communication is something i didn't properly notice though nice pointing that out also even though i completely disagree with your theory, with sukuna's technique being called 御厨子 (shrine/kitchen) by yorozu, and with the "shrine" definition specifically meaning a buddhist shrine where sacred items are stored, you could say that it's a reference to sukuna storing cursed techniques
this could explain that time gojo said sukunas technique would be put into yujis body as well which is why yuji has so much knowledge of the soul since he got it from sukuna being in his body
Funny enough, "Malevolent Shrine", in Italian, has been translated to "Reliquiario Demoniaco", which can be translated to both "Malevolent Shrine" and also to "Weaponry of the demon(s)". If the translation directly comes from the Japanese directly to the Italian, then basically his different assimilated curse are "stored" as within the "black box" that materialize in Sukuna's Domain Expansion. This may also explain **spoiler from manga*** Why Sukuna cannot use other curse technique such as the fire arrow now: because the shrine has been crushed by Gojo during the battles of domains!
Gege said that Yuji's memory stuff isn't a curse technique. Maybe it's not a curse technique. Something no one is talking about is how both binding vows and barriers are separate from curse techniques. It's entirely probably that a vow, heavenly or otherwise, can be at work here. This implies something people are overlooking. You can have an innate domain without a curse technique, just like how you can have a curse technique without a body that can use it. Junpei had a curse technique but did not have a body that could execute it. This distinction was integral to Kenjaku's marking plan for the culling games. Yuji might not have a curse technique, and what he is currently doing and has done may not be Curse Technique related, but just straight up hands and other mechanical aptitude like barrier and binding vows and innate domains. There is a very high possibility that Yuki's soul research is related to Innate Domains.

well now we know that his technique is actually called shrine, cleave is its main technique while dismantle is a somewhat advanced application, or specific to sukuna seeing as yuji only uses/has used cleave so far. his fire arrow is called furnace, and whether the shrine is the black box or a space in his brain where his former brothers technique resides is yet to be revealed
I play this game called Nioh 2. Theres a Ryomen Sukuna boss there, two faces, four arms and legs. One side wields FIRE element, SWORD and AXE. The other side wields the ICE element and a BOW. There’s parallels there with the fire arrow, dismantle and cleave, and Uraume but it’s still a stretch since it came from a game, which takes characters from history and put their own twist to it.
Finally someone mentioned Nioh 2. There depiction of Sukuna is pretty close to the irl lore. Based comment! All the yokai in nioh 2 are close 1:1 of their IRL lore. Ryomen Sukuna is no exception. Team Ninja the game Dev's wouldn't make stuff up outta nowhere. It isn't really a stretch.

The thing about a bloc box system is that there can be external dependencies, so perhaps Sukuna can't replicate ten shadows because perhaps Megumi is a vessel chosen for the technique, so simply mimicking Megumi isn't enough. That could be why he needed to possess Megumi specifically

Don’t think people realize how good this theory is. Cause yes dismantle and cleave are his inate technique. But the idea of his changing his box system. Means he does not need o change his CE but just the box to get different input. This is further backed by how yuji has no CT. But as gojo said he would gain the ability’s of sukuna. Thus now Yuji has a soul ability that allows him to understand others CT like using blood manipulation. Which Yuji never has a Ct thus black box had an input which we know Yuji has Ce but never got an output. Now with sukuna “ability “ he can change the box system to get an output. Hear me out. Maybe’s Sukuna’s technique is called “Shrine” …. Definition : “a place regarded as holy because of its associations with a divinity or a sacred person or relic, marked by a building or other construction. A shrine can also be a place that is honored because of some connection with a famous person or event.” Sukuna is titled as the king of curses. Angel referred to him as the fallen one. What if his technique is that of a god and so he was supposed to perform certain duties within the realm of jujutsu; however he decided to do things his own way. His technique allows himself to act as a temple that people can worship, pray to, and offer gifts (techniques, weapons, cursed energy, soul/body and binding vows)… this is why sukuna is able to understand any and every phenomenon because he’s been offered so much and has seen a wide range of techniques during the times people offered him their gifts…. When sukuna summons his DE, you see a shrine with mouths and it’s surrounded by corpses which most likely symbolises all those who have offered to be sacrificed by sukuna thinking they’d be rewarded by a king/ godly being but have only died and became apart of sukuna.

btw sukuna's domain didnt produce flames on the finger bearer that just a special fx in the anime when it gets exorcised , when megumi fights the finger bearer and beats him it also does the purple flame fx so that point is wrong
To support your theory more, you have to remember what happened with Kenjaku. His ability to swap bodies was an innate/self-made technique, and yet Sukuna was the "only other person to do it on their own." This means that Sukuna made himself a cursed object separate from Kenjaku's work, which is probably how he ended splitting himself apart.
I think Sukuna is beyond a traditional technique. He knows something about cursed energy that no one else does. The "true nature" of curse energy as he has mentioned previously, and that's why it seems like he can do anything he wants in theory
I always thought and still think the fire arrow use is similar to how he used world slash from mahoraga, he can use the core of Jujutsu, which is how he learned both fire arrow and world slash. As for his form, i think he can merge with people like tengen can, that's why he looks like tengen. Yuji thinks that megumi's soul can be saved if it sukuna doesn't have a soul merging ability. It would be super jjk if it turns out sukuna can merge with people like tengen can and ends up merging with megumi's soul, completely destroying megumi and maybe he got four arms and 2 mouths probably because he merged with his twin brother like tengen does to the Star plasma vessel. Plus sukuna ate tengen's embryo.

Yuji damaging peoples soul isn’t because of a cursed technique. It’s an ability sorcerers gain when they are aware of his own soul. Yuji became aware his soul because he shared a body with sukuna.

My guess is assimilating cursed tools, and cursed techniques that can be held as weapons. Like a bow, or executioner's sword. He seems more interested in weapons than he does techniques. During higuruma trial, he says he coukdnt care less about what hes done, he just wants to see the sword. The girls with phone, he picks it up and realises its just part of her technique, gets disappointed, scoffs and crushes it. Would make sense if box is just a shrine that literally holds weapons.
This assumes dismantle and cleave were the literal knives in the drawing, and that he can hold so many weapons 'on hand' and others get stored. 4 weapons with 4 arms, 2 weapons with 2 arms

I always thought the black box was an advanced inversion of Sukuna's innate technique like red and purple are to Gojo, Since he says "Oh, that's right. I thought you'd know about this, but I suppose a cursed spirit wouldn't." before using it and he is a master of RCT, which curses don't use and likely don't fully understand. "Cleave" can mean both splitting or mending (though the translation may be inexact) and anything you "dismantle" can be assembled or reassembled. This does wonders to explain why Sukuna, who can instantly kill most opponents, frequently plays around with any opponent that has the potential to show him a new application of cursed techniques or energy that he can learn from. A technique that allows you to manually "Assemble" cursed energy into a technique, not simply copy or imitate, but observe, understand, and apply in your effort to invent something far better. This also explains why he is delighted with Mahoraga, as he is the perfect subject to experiment with and learn from in any battle going forward and he needed to ditch Yuji's body for a vessel that doesn't trap him as Yuji has proven he always would. With Mahoraga as a "Blueprint"(his words) Sukuna is capable of learning and advancing like never before, watching as Mahoraga automatically CREATED a shortcut through absolutely everything, utilizing a whole new understanding of cursed energy and it's application. Sukuna is always talking about how little sorcerers and curses understand the energy they use, and is absolutely overjoyed when he realizes that Mahoraga can actually "see" and likely understand his technique. So Sukuna may be an outright Inventor or artist in the application of cursed energy and he now has the perfect test subject or muse with Mahoraga.
I love the theory, it’s very well put together. My theory is the black box is a compartment in his demonic feretory. And the feretory is built like a Buddhist stupa. The stupa representing the 5 elements and the mastery over them which leads to enlightenment. I think Sukuna's Black Box is him fully refining his CT. We all know Sukuna is probably the best user of CE period, even Gojo's Six Eyes don't give you the same perfection, though better proficiency. I think the flame arrow is precisely slashing the air relentlessly with a truly mastered Cleave to set it ablaze, then unleashing it as it's own ability. Sukuna seals this beneath the Black Box through a Binding Vow, as always maintaining that level of precision would decimate his brain with the amount of focus it requires and he doesn't have the Six Eyes like Gojo to compensate for that. So, Sukuna seals it beneath a chant and a Binding Vow to empower it and allow himself access to the ability without harming himself. That's what I think anyways

Looking at his nickname the King of Curses, it could be as simple as that. He has his inherent techniques but Fuga (elegance, grace) could be almost like a king's domain where being the king of curses hes allowed to open cursed energy to copy other curses techniques. Fuga can also mean "good taste" which is another play on words dealing with food which sukuna as we know is a chef.

Yuji interacts with the soul as a learnt technique from his experience as a vessel and yuki tsukumo's research, not as an innate output of the brain but a learnt application of sorcery there's a canonically distinct difference.

here have a random crackhead theory, sukunas true cursed tech: creation he can ouput any technique using the chant to command a refined output allowing him to copy and create anything he wants. this could use massive amounts of CE so he doesnt like to spam it, with the reverse tech of course being destruction the ability to slice something into atoms effectively deleting it from existance.
I think his CT is based around cooking. even his DE was called Malevolent Kitchen and it would make sense as he is a cannibal. He cooks with fire and prepares with cleave and slash. He also carrys around Uraume as a freezer of sort.
Something i find interesting about Sukuna is that he looks a lot like an *Asura* from Buddhist beliefs, they are war themed demigods with enourmous power that inhabit one of the 6 realms of Samsara like Humans and Divas do in their respective realms, but they have 6 arms and eyes (3 heads/faces), while sukuna only has 4 arms and 4 eyes (2 faces), so this comparison makes Sukuna look like an "incomplete" Asura Funnily enough, with Mahito's final form having a resemblence to Sukuna, it kinda feels like he could be Sukuna's missing piece Or maybe it's the other way around and Sukuna has Mahito's "missing pieces" Perhaps Sukuna *_took_* a big piece of the previous incarnation Human curse spirit which once looked like an Asura in the past Maybe this could also be why Sukuna could damage Mahito's soul, bc he has a connection to it, kinda like how Nobara can damage people by damaging a piece of their bodies(?
The best theory I have seen concerning Sukuna's 'black box' fire arrow is that it's Sukuna's Cursed Technique Reversal. This would explain why cursed spirits would not know about it because they can't do CTR. Sukuna's cleave and dismantle are slash attacks that divide things, right? Now this may be a bit of a stretch but Sukuna can literally slash empty space so, let's assume these slashes can force divide things even to the atomic level. A CTR of this would be to force combined things. Combining things at the atomic level creates nuclear fusion, a literal nuke. It makes sense to me because of its insane firepower. I'm inclined to belive this more because the 'black box' isn't a literal black box, it's just censorship to hide whatever it is Sukuna was saying. I mean the subtitle represented it as a white box lol. And Yuta already copied the technique, if there is anything amazing or OP about Sukuna's CT, Yuta would have hit him with it. He hit Sukuna with a cleave, the strongest application of Sukuna's CT that does not require an expanded target or CTR.
I was thinking into this ever since the CE explanation. So, if cursed energy is electricity and cursed techniques are appliances, Sukuna could simply have become the equivalent in cursed techniques of General Electric and produce everything from toasters to jet engines and power them with his cursed energy. Basically what I gather is that in the JJK world, sorcerers just went “lol IDK” when asked how/why their cursed techniques worked and never attempted to truly understand it. Same with the soul, and since modifying one’s soul also modifies the body, and with the highly individualistic philosophy of Sukuna, it is not hard to see that maybe he doesn’t have a particular cursed technique, but rather he can simply create and learn new ones as he progresses his own understanding of cursed energy, his soul, and techniques/effects he sees around him. And since a better understanding of his soul could allow him to change his soul, then this would change his body; basically “I believe I can do this by channeling cursed technique this way, therefore I can do it” kind of thing. This doesn’t extend just to Sukuna but every sorcerer out there, the issue is that just Sukuna has been able to somewhat grasp the concept.

Guys have you ever noticed that sukuna's original fingers had different patterns? In chapter 111, Jogo shows ten Sukuna's fingers, and there you can notice that they have different shapes, for example, one resembles dirt, and other resembles wood, and other, ice.
I have seen and really like this theory. My only issue is that if that was the case Yuta probably wouldn’t have been able to use cleave by feeding a finger to Rika, since that finger wouldn’t have been the slicing finger.

I also thought of this theory once, but I kinda of thought that it was too broken even for Sukuna. It is basically Sukuna being able to attribute a particular property to his cursed energy , similar to cursed energy traits.
He can pass his cursed energy through the brain ( the part responsible for jujutsu in general) and also manipulate it to obtain the cursed energy that he desires because overusing it prob causes brain damage.
I am imagining it is similar to how reverse cursed energy is processed in the head. It also explains why he understood what Gojo was doing by healing his CT using RCT.

For example, cleave and dismantle might normally have the CE trait of being "sharp", meaning he couldn't then apply Mahoraga's CE trait to bypass infinity without losing the ability to use his cursed energy for cleave and dismantle. If he did change his trait to bypass infinity then he would just be punching Gojo with cursed energy, which he could already do with Domain Amplification anyways.

I think the very first finger bearer fight could also relate to Sukuna in some fashion. The finger bearer did not have a technique it was just firing out bursts of cursed energy. Sukuna could have a similat technique which on paper would be garbage tier for most people as it is very generic, but when pushed to its utter limits we have Sukuna
The basis for your theory is very well fleshed and thought out.
I'm just offering some food for thought as additions to the ideas you presented.
JJK over its course has heavily emphasized the importance of body, mind and spirit being directly interlinked, if not being one and the same thing (all the info revealed in arcs involving Yuji, Mahito, Tengen, Kenjaku, Sukuna, Toji etc.). The human body is a physical manifestation of the soul (and vice versa) as presented by Mahito and his ability to alter peoples souls directly. This also means by extension a persons techniques are a reflection of their body (mind) and soul. The "black box" system of the brain was a key piece of info, as the unique structure and makeup of the brain are different person to person, but also hereditary (hence the JJ sorceror clans). This means everyone will have different innate techniques, but people of similar genetics have higher chances to have the same black box and hence innate technique e.g. ten shadows, infinity etc These same rare techniques likely require a very specific black box system in the brain.
Further to the black box, it also explains why Mahito can't alter his own soul directly, as he would change/lose his technique doing so, which forces an impossible paradox.
Further to all of this. I believe the black box is a conduit or housing for the soul itself, or perhaps a part of it. The evidence is the same evidence you presented e.g. Sukuna visiting everyone he has killed in their "minds" or souls directly. Also everything I mentioned prior.
I also believe domain expansions are a physical manifestation of the black box of the brain (which is a conduit/housing to the soul and it's innate techniques) You are expanding the domain of your soul into reality, by opening your black box conduit into the physical world by using a barrier. You literally bring out your innate techniques of the black box housing by opening and manifesting your black box conduit using cursed energy/sorcery, but the condition is to provide a housing (barrier) for said domain. The barrier acts as the box itself. This explains why domains gives sure hit, as you are literally within the inner workings of what creates your innate technique. This is why domains are the epitome of JJ. It is also why barrierless domains are akin to painting a masterpiece without a canvas, because your black box and soul don't need barriers setup as a condition to open up and extend out into reality. Your black box must be freely open by other means. Note how Sukuna has a barrierless domain here.
Now onto several theories.
Sukuna - his innate technique/s likely involves what you mentioned.
Some form of dissimilation i.e. breaking down (dismantle and cleave for physical matter), but he is applying them insanely smartly, to more than just matter e.g. souls. He might do it indirectly by interacting with the black box or conduit/housing of the soul. This would explain many things (appearing to Jogo and other kills, directly in their black box i.e. conduit and housing to the soul). The reverse of this technique would be to assimilate i.e. building up or storing. Sukuna has learnt to break open his black box, as well as the boxes of others. He breaks open their black box, learns the working of the technique, and then builds and assimilates the techniques back into his own black box. He can learn
how hereditary techniques work, but cannot store them as those require a specific black box make up i.e. brain. This explains his expert level use of ten shadows.
"Fuga" might be Sukuna breaking down i.e. opening his black box, allowing him direct access to his domain holding his techniques and soul. This allows him to directly modify his cursed technique into the other forms he has assimilated or learnt.
Sukunas black box or domain, malevolent shrine is also barrierless. Likely because he can freely open his black box conduit to his soul and extend it out into reality freely. He does not need a barrier to contain his domain, he just projects it directly from his open black box brain/conduit to his soul.
Sukuna also broke apart his soul into the 20 fingers using his own technique. Just as an aside.
Now for even more theories, and to the core of Kenjaku and Yukis commentary of purging jujutsu/cursed energy permanently.
Toji and Maki - their
Heavenly restrictions likely relate to some hereditary makeup of their black box in their brains. It is likely super inefficient in storing and consuming cursed energy into techniques, given Yukis commentary on Toji when talking to Kenjaku . Hence stored cursed energy is directed from the soul to the body, instead of to manifesting innate cursed techniques. This black box however is so extremely rare and also variable, Toji and Maki are the only known people like this, with "0" apparent CE. Meaning this "solution" of making everyone super inefficient at using CE is not viable at scale.
Yuji - is part of Kenjakus puzzle/ alternate answer to Yukis proposal. I think Yuji was born without a soul, he is a "human" cursed object. This distinction is important to make, as he will abide by the mind, body and spirit relationship from earlier. This is why he cannot be targeted by Mahito.The soul is the housing of cursed energy for CT. It's also why he has no CT as he has no soul. I also think he is likely the opposite of a heavenly restriction. He is likely extremely efficient at storing and using CE because of all of this. He has a massive empty battery where his soul should be, and his black box os extremely efficient at using CE. However it's almost like an inverse heavenly restriction though (unholy restriction), so he was born with no technique and no abilities, but with infinite potential. Since he was exposed to housing Sukuna, who juiced him up and exposed him to CE and CT to his black box and empty soul. It is also why he was such a good cage for Sukuna and why he uses black flashes so readily and easily.
Lastly, I also think Yuji is part of the solution to the merger. He will likely house all of the souls at the end of all of it. Sukuna will set off the merger using megumis body, break down and merge all the souls into Yuji, who will house them. We will likely get a super bitter ending as everyone essentially dies. Even Sukuna is overwhelmed and killed by Yuji. And Yuji is left essentially cursed to live eternally, holding all the cursed energy in the world.

Fuga is an originally German word for English translation Fugue. Fugue is a type of music where there’s one theme repeated over and over but with different styles and techniques interwoven together and developed to be more complex than the theme by itself. Often using lots of counterpoint (a type of music in itself) to overlay the theme.
This fits Sukuna very well as well. He has a main theme, but he can use it with many different variations and different techniques, and they’re always a wonderful counter(point) to his enemy.
It’s also just a really cool word.
This is one of the most logically thought out JJK theories I've ever heard. The fact that his domain expansion technique is not in an enclosed space like everyone else, is a testament to how long he has been continuously adapting/evolving his power.

Awesome theory and very very close to what I thought may be the truth behind it all. I think you're spot on with the black box thing, but its not an ability he has but rather a super high level and difficult incantation that most sorcerers cannot pull off for various reasons. Something that other sorcerers knew about during the Heian era but have forgotten as time has passed and the difficulty in mastering and using it.

im guessing sukuna's cursed technique is something related to hell and worship. His domain handsign belongs to Enma-Tenin, who is the king of hell and death in Buddism. Thats probably why he can manipulate fire. His cleave and dismantle are definitely related to worship, possibly representing sacrifice, seeing as how theyre slashing attacks.
His black box might also be a place where he keeps elements related to worship or hell as well, but one thing we know FOR SURE in the manga is that the "black box" is the area where cursed techniques are stored within the brain, so we dont know the full extent of sukuna's powers yet

1. the black box isn't literal, it's just a censor for something sukuna says before fuga
2. 開 (fuga) just means "open"
3. historical sukuna has two swords and a bow&arrow, implying that jjk sukuna only has dismantle, cleave, and the fire bow and extensions of those like world-cutting slash
4. finger bearer doesn't turn into fire in the manga and kinda just poofs away

also even though i completely disagree with your theory, with sukuna's technique being called 御厨子 (shrine/kitchen) by yorozu, and with the "shrine" definition specifically meaning a buddhist shrine where sacred items are stored, you could say that it's a reference to sukuna storing cursed techniques

Funny enough, "Malevolent Shrine", in Italian, has been translated to "Reliquiario Demoniaco", which can be translated to both "Malevolent Shrine" and also to "Weaponry of the demon(s)". If the translation directly comes from the Japanese directly to the Italian, then basically his different assimilated curse are "stored" as within the "black box" that materialize in Sukuna's Domain Expansion. Gege said that Yuji's memory stuff isn't a curse technique. Maybe it's not a curse technique. Something no one is talking about is how both binding vows and barriers are separate from curse techniques. It's entirely probably that a vow, heavenly or otherwise, can be at work here.
This implies something people are overlooking. You can have an innate domain without a curse technique, just like how you can have a curse technique without a body that can use it. Junpei had a curse technique but did not have a body that could execute it. This distinction was integral to Kenjaku's marking plan for the culling games.
Yuji might not have a curse technique, and what he is currently doing and has done may not be Curse Technique related, but just straight up hands and other mechanical aptitude like barrier and binding vows and innate domains. There is a very high possibility that Yuki's soul research is related to Innate Domains.

well now we know that his technique is actually called shrine, cleave is its main technique while dismantle is a somewhat advanced application, or specific to sukuna seeing as yuji only uses/has used cleave so far. his fire arrow is called furnace, and whether the shrine is the black box or a space in his brain where his former brothers technique resides is yet to be revealed

I play this game called Nioh 2. Theres a Ryomen Sukuna boss there, two faces, four arms and legs. One side wields FIRE element, SWORD and AXE. The other side wields the ICE element and a BOW. There’s parallels there with the fire arrow, dismantle and cleave, and Uraume but it’s still a stretch since it came from a game, which takes characters from history and put their own twist to it.

All the yokai in nioh 2 are close 1:1 of their IRL lore. Ryomen Sukuna is no exception. Team Ninja the game Dev's wouldn't make stuff up outta nowhere. It isn't really a stretch.

The thing about a bloc box system is that there can be external dependencies, so perhaps Sukuna can't replicate ten shadows because perhaps Megumi is a vessel chosen for the technique, so simply mimicking Megumi isn't enough. That could be why he needed to possess Megumi specifically
One thing worth mentioning is when sukuna uses the blsck box and fire he says something like "I thought everyone knew about this, well I guess a cursed spirit wouldnt know"

Means he does not need o change his CE but just the box to get different input. This is further backed by how yuji has no CT. But as gojo said he would gain the ability’s of sukuna. Thus now Yuji has a soul ability that allows him to understand others CT like using blood manipulation. Which Yuji never has a Ct thus black box had an input which we know Yuji has Ce but never got an output. Now with sukuna “ability “ he can change the box system to get an output. Hear me out. Maybe’s Sukuna’s technique is called “Shrine” …. Definition : “a place regarded as holy because of its associations with a divinity or a sacred person or relic, marked by a building or other construction. A shrine can also be a place that is honored because of some connection with a famous person or event.” Sukuna is titled as the king of curses. Angel referred to him as the fallen one. What if his technique is that of a god and so he was supposed to perform certain duties within the realm of jujutsu; however he decided to do things his own way. His technique allows himself to act as a temple that people can worship, pray to, and offer gifts (techniques, weapons, cursed energy, soul/body and binding vows)… this is why sukuna is able to understand any and every phenomenon because he’s been offered so much and has seen a wide range of techniques during the times people offered him their gifts…. When sukuna summons his DE, you see a shrine with mouths and it’s surrounded by corpses which most likely symbolises all those who have offered to be sacrificed by sukuna thinking they’d be rewarded by a king/ godly being but have only died and became apart of sukuna.

To support your theory more, you have to remember what happened with Kenjaku. His ability to swap bodies was an innate/self-made technique, and yet Sukuna was the "only other person to do it on their own." This means that Sukuna made himself a cursed object separate from Kenjaku's work, which is probably how he ended splitting himself apart.

I think Sukuna is beyond a traditional technique. He knows something about cursed energy that no one else does. The "true nature" of curse energy as he has mentioned previously, and that's why it seems like he can do anything he wants in theory
Take a close look at the fingers when Jogo fed them to Yuji. They all have a unique look, and seem to correspond to different elements or techniques
I always thought and still think the fire arrow use is similar to how he used world slash from mahoraga, he can use the core of Jujutsu, which is how he learned both fire arrow and world slash. As for his form, i think he can merge with people like tengen can, that's why he looks like tengen. Yuji thinks that megumi's soul can be saved if it sukuna doesn't have a soul merging ability. It would be super jjk if it turns out sukuna can merge with people like tengen can and ends up merging with megumi's soul, completely destroying megumi and maybe he got four arms and 2 mouths probably because he merged with his twin brother like tengen does to the Star plasma vessel. Plus sukuna ate tengen's embryo.
Thats a great point. Now I think of it its kinda strange that Yuji brings up Idle Transfiguration after so long if it wasn't gonna be important soon.

Sukuna eating the embryo could prove important later on. That's also why i brought up the twin brother point as this explains why he's one soul, as he merged with his twin
Yuji damaging peoples soul isn’t because of a cursed technique. It’s an ability sorcerers gain when they are aware of his own soul. Yuji became aware his soul because he shared a body with sukuna.

My guess is assimilating cursed tools, and cursed techniques that can be held as weapons. Like a bow, or executioner's sword.

This assumes dismantle and cleave were the literal knives in the drawing, and that he can hold so many weapons 'on hand' and others get stored.

I always thought the black box was an advanced inversion of Sukuna's innate technique like red and purple are to Gojo, Since he says "Oh, that's right. I thought you'd know about this, but I suppose a cursed spirit wouldn't." before using it and he is a master of RCT, which curses don't use and likely don't fully understand.
"Cleave" can mean both splitting or mending (though the translation may be inexact) and anything you "dismantle" can be assembled or reassembled. This does wonders to explain why Sukuna, who can instantly kill most opponents, frequently plays around with any opponent that has the potential to show him a new application of cursed techniques or energy that he can learn from. A technique that allows you to manually "Assemble" cursed energy into a technique, not simply copy or imitate, but observe, understand, and apply in your effort to invent something far better.
This also explains why he is delighted with Mahoraga, as he is the perfect subject to experiment with and learn from in any battle going forward and he needed to ditch Yuji's body for a vessel that doesn't trap him as Yuji has proven he always would.
With Mahoraga as a "Blueprint"(his words) Sukuna is capable of learning and advancing like never before, watching as Mahoraga automatically CREATED a shortcut through absolutely everything, utilizing a whole new understanding of cursed energy and it's application. Sukuna is always talking about how little sorcerers and curses understand the energy they use, and is absolutely overjoyed when he realizes that Mahoraga can actually "see" and likely understand his technique.
So Sukuna may be an outright Inventor or artist in the application of cursed energy and he now has the perfect test subject or muse with Mahoraga.
I love the theory, it’s very well put together. My theory is the black box is a compartment in his demonic feretory. And the feretory is built like a Buddhist stupa. The stupa representing the 5 elements and the mastery over them which leads to enlightenment. I also thought sukunas soul was stored away in a similar compartment in the feretory, making him essentially immortal. Kinda like Voldemort did in Harry Potter 🤷🏽♂️

I think Sukuna's Black Box is him fully refining his CT. We all know Sukuna is probably the best user of CE period, even Gojo's Six Eyes don't give you the same perfection, though better proficiency. I think the flame arrow is precisely slashing the air relentlessly with a truly mastered Cleave to set it ablaze, then unleashing it as it's own ability. Sukuna seals this beneath the Black Box through a Binding Vow, as always maintaining that level of precision would decimate his brain with the amount of focus it requires and he doesn't have the Six Eyes like Gojo to compensate for that. So, Sukuna seals it beneath a chant and a Binding Vow to empower it and allow himself access to the ability without harming himself. That's what I think anyways

He has his inherent techniques but Fuga (elegance, grace) could be almost like a king's domain where being the king of curses hes allowed to open cursed energy to copy other curses techniques. Fuga can also mean "good taste" which is another play on words dealing with food which sukuna as we know is a chef.

Gojo explains the difference between innate and learnt techniques, Fuga is only a chant sukuna uses, manipulating your own techniques and interacting with souls are all things anyone can do they just figure it out.
Megumi beat the finger bearer by broadening his own interpretation of his technique thats what sorcery is its why sukuna was grinning after he did that.
Yuji interacts with the soul as a learnt technique from his experience as a vessel and yuki tsukumo's research, not as an innate output of the brain but a learnt application of sorcery there's a canonically distinct difference.
4 times Sukuna saw a powerful curse technique and learned it's principle to use it in his own way (not copy) -
1 Seeing kenjaku using dead painting
2 seeing jogo using the fire element
3 seeing Gojo using RCT to heal curse technique
4 Seeing Mahoraga's slash and developing his space slash
here have a random crackhead theory, sukunas true cursed tech: creation he can ouput any technique using the chant to command a refined output allowing him to copy and create anything he wants. this could use massive amounts of CE so he doesnt like to spam it, with the reverse tech of course being destruction the ability to slice something into atoms effectively deleting it from existance.

I think his CT is based around cooking. even his DE was called Malevolent Kitchen and it would make sense as he is a cannibal. He cooks with fire and prepares with cleave and slash. He also carrys around Uraume as a freezer of sort.
Something i find interesting about Sukuna is that he looks a lot like an *Asura* from Buddhist beliefs, they are war themed demigods with enourmous power that inhabit one of the 6 realms of Samsara like Humans and Divas do in their respective realms, but they have 6 arms and eyes (3 heads/faces), while sukuna only has 4 arms and 4 eyes (2 faces), so this comparison makes Sukuna look like an "incomplete" Asura
Funnily enough, with Mahito's final form having a resemblence to Sukuna, it kinda feels like he could be Sukuna's missing piece

The best theory I have seen concerning Sukuna's 'black box' fire arrow is that it's Sukuna's Cursed Technique Reversal. This would explain why cursed spirits would not know about it because they can't do CTR.
Sukuna's cleave and dismantle are slash attacks that divide things, right? Now this may be a bit of a stretch but Sukuna can literally slash empty space so, let's assume these slashes can force divide things even to the atomic level. A CTR of this would be to force combined things. Combining things at the atomic level creates nuclear fusion, a literal nuke. It makes sense to me because of its insane firepower.
I'm inclined to belive this more because the 'black box' isn't a literal black box, it's just censorship to hide whatever it is Sukuna was saying. I mean the subtitle represented it as a white box lol. And Yuta already copied the technique, if there is anything amazing or OP about Sukuna's CT, Yuta would have hit him with it. He hit Sukuna with a cleave, the strongest application of Sukuna's CT that does not require an expanded target or CTR.
I was thinking into this ever since the CE explanation.
So, if cursed energy is electricity and cursed techniques are appliances, Sukuna could simply have become the equivalent in cursed techniques of General Electric and produce everything from toasters to jet engines and power them with his cursed energy.
Basically what I gather is that in the JJK world, sorcerers just went “lol IDK” when asked how/why their cursed techniques worked and never attempted to truly understand it.
Same with the soul, and since modifying one’s soul also modifies the body, and with the highly individualistic philosophy of Sukuna, it is not hard to see that maybe he doesn’t have a particular cursed technique, but rather he can simply create and learn new ones as he progresses his own understanding of cursed energy, his soul, and techniques/effects he sees around him.
And since a better understanding of his soul could allow him to change his soul, then this would change his body; basically “I believe I can do this by channeling cursed technique this way, therefore I can do it” kind of thing.
This doesn’t extend just to Sukuna but every sorcerer out there, the issue is that just Sukuna has been able to somewhat grasp the concept.
