Subaru at this point is completely mindbroken. He already has reached Roswaal. He is completely insane, just in a different way. All those deaths and all the suffering he's been through HAS affected him. He's changed. He's no longer the Subaru we once knew in Arc 2. What was once a relatable protagonist has become an incomprehensible mess, everything from his emotions, to his ideas and thoughts have become warped from trauma. Delicious, delicious trauma.

Yeah, Subaru inner mind is one of the intriguing thing to explore, even in the novel, the narration doesn't just put the story in Subaru's point of view, but rather in a 3rd Person View like an observer (but not all-knowing) that sometimes mixed with some of his thought. In every Arc, you will see a pattern of his tendency to think, talk, or do, but even then the reason is not necessarily shown. The more the Arcs goes, the more it gets unraveled bits by bits, sometimes by the narration itself, sometimes by Subaru's own realization, or sometimes by others calling him out for it, and it's just so crazy when it finally get exposed to the audiences.

@@Kyjack1556 Usually, the general pattern were that we will get the understanding of his mindset in the 1/3 end of the Arcs along with the answer to the problems. However, sometimes he still didn't realize that he still carries some of his unresolved flaws towards the next Arcs (like the transition from Arc 2 to Arc 3). This is hard to notice however, since it's so subtle. But I think by the end of every Arcs you will still understand his mental state anyway.

Subaru isnt really that sane tbf (He also had a unique personality to begin with) There is this one line of his in the interlude after arc 4 that makes the person he is talking to worried and slightly disturbed. It took Subaru couple moments to realize what he even said. It really shows how much the suffering has effected him.
If I remeber right he was even more messed up in the web novel (anime adapts light novels which are polished versions), banging his head on a wall while talking to Emilia and Frederica at the beggining of the arc. But i think the web novel in earlier arcs often goes too far in the extremes so I think its good it wasnt added. It still shows that the autor deasnt view Subarus mental state as ok which obviously makes sense.
I never found his actions too hard to follow tho while I was an anime only. Obviously a lot made more sense with episodes 18 and s2 ep4, and inner monologues would help.
Some things also arent meant to be known right away. A lot of ppl were angry at Subaru for not just saying i am that person right away but we later find out what his opinion on that is and it makes a lot of sense.
I wonder what are the lines the comment and Caw actually reffer to. The comment could be from a Subaru hater but idk bc he didnt give examples. A lot of ppl say they love Re zero except for Subaru who brings the rest of the show down for them.

It's like Okabe Rintaro from steins; gate all over again. You'd think that for someone who has the ability to go back in time, they would just stop caring at some point because they'd develop a mindset of, "eh, whatever, I can just reset anyways." which tbh Okabe actually kind of developed that way later on(literally waited the exact time of Mayuri's death before looping) also same with Subaru saying things like, "I gotta hear an answer from Roswaal first before I leave this world." but I guess their authors just want to tell the audience just how much of a good person the MCs(Okabe and Subaru) are that even if they can just reset, they still take everything seriously and take responsibility for their actions.
Also, these 2 characters are supposed to be stressed out beyond what anyone could imagine so for me, it's normal that we can't understand what their way of thinking is unless we really try so hard to do so, specially in the case of Subaru who died multiple times

Letters sent by Subaru are weird, in S1 arc 3, he sent a letter to ram about something but it came empty, making her suggest a declaration of war. In this arc, the letter sent to Roswall (i think) never got to him or was empty as well. Im an anime only so hopefully this gets explained later on.

The first is that in episode 35/20:51 Ryuzu appears watching Subaru leave right after writing the letter. My first bet is that in addition to her having warned Garf about Subaru's departure, she also took the letter.

I'm pretty sure that having Beatrice's Gospel fall apart so easily is supposed to represent how meaningless its words and prophecies have become during the 400 years she's been stuck in the library for. She doesn't even care about its state when the pages are scattered around the floor, the book's "filled" with empty promises that don't hold any more weight, and even she realizes that, deep down.

That scene where he met Satella in castle of dreams. His irrational actions and everything he was doing was so out of place. I understand his trauma but something about that whole scene was like a kid throwing a tantrum.
Not to mention I have no idea how Satella is supposed to be there. Echidna gathered the souls of other witches so that's why they exist in castle of dream. But we know that Satella soul is sealed along with her body.

That moment remained me of Nietzsche quote “What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.” and I believe what Subaru does is very relatable to anyone when something goes wrong the first to blame is the one in charge. When he bit his toungue it was his last fuck you to Satella, he believe that he die for the last time without even thinking to the ones he leaves.

@@LatifaFleuranzasatella seems to have broken many barriers to get to the dream realm but we don’t really know how since she is sealed away. Him crying like that was intentional to show what sekmet was saying, that Subaru putting all the stress and pain on his shoulders was something that’s childish and would only bring him down. It’s clear to all the witches except Subaru that he doesn’t want to die, than why is it that he no longer cares about his life and is forcing himself to go through pain for the sake of saving everyone. How can he save everyone when he doesn’t even want to save himself. Is he not included with everyone? Subaru of course in this state has lost his humanity only thinking of the goal not what’s in it. There’s a lot to talk about but I don’t want this to get any longer

@@LatifaFleuranza Sorry that this ended up being so long. If you do read it I hope it helps.
      SPOILERS
Firstly, Sekhmet in that scene describes him as a lonely child making a fuss so you aren't far off. Secondly, Satella invaded the tea party bc she is one of the strongest beings in the universe and nobody was guarding at the moment (Sekhmet's job in the novels who can do it with the help of dream palace being hard to get to on its own- this is cut from the anime). But Satella herself and everything about her is a mystery that is probably endgame material so it isn't something to dwell on in my opinion. We already know that not all of history of this world is correct bc most think Satella created mabeasts when it was Daphne. Cut content is also that Satella and Envy are 2 personalities in the same body.
As far as Subaru's reaction. in that ep, there are several things at play that have been building up for a whole arc and longer. One is just trauma in general, and all the stress he endured in this 4 arcs. Then the 2nd trial which ppl sometimes overlook how much this messed him up. This season has slowly been building up few things, Subaru's increasing guilt which was carried from the first season, and Subaru viewing himself and his life as a tool. This starts with loosing Rem,. Then we have Subaru's conversation with his mom in the trial where she tells him the end is the most important part. Subaru misinterprets this asking if that means that what happens in the beginning and the middle just doesn't matter, to which she says that it isn't how she wanted him to interpret that and that this is homework for him to figure it out. Then the loops and trauma start again, and every time he gets more and more cornered. Echidna then tells him she thinks that rbd is limitless and he resolves himself to start looping on purpose to find out what to do. Because he starts believing he has no value to offer others except for dying for them. Before he never went into a loop thinking of it as a test run planning to die in the end. This is what Echidna wants and what her contract is for.
Echidna is someone Subaru was suspicious of, but started leaning on and trusting bc he confined in her about rbd which was a huge deal for him. But then she breaks that trust bc it is found out she was manipulating him. So the person he trusted betrayed him, he feels like he has no one to ask for help. He found out he may have had everyone stay sad or dead in possible timelines, he blames himself, and he has no idea how to fix it other than continuing to die. Minerva comes and calls him vile for trying to help in only way he currently knows how to. Then comes Satella, who is in Subaru's eyes the reason for his whole misery. It seems she pulled him away from his home, she gave him this curse, she isolates him from speaking about it, she killed Emilia, possessed her, attacked the Sanctuary, ls obsessed with him, stalks him, tried to make him love her and he doesn't know anything about her. Then Minerva says that he is being ungrateful to her. That sounds like such an insult from his point of view.. Imagine someone is the source of all your suffering from your pov and someone else says you are ungrateful to them.
Now about the 2nd trial. Firstly, he almost lost his mind so you wouldn't expect him to be composed. Subaru's interpretation of 2nd trial vs. the witches interpretation of it is basically the main conflict in their discussion in ep13. Subaru hates himself so much and believes everything is his fault bc he is horrible. He thinks the trial was supposed to show him his sins of failing to save others. Minerva and Satella try to explain that it was about showing him how much others care for him and how he should take better care of himself. Satella tells him to love himself witch stuns him bc it was unexpected. His answer is that it doesn't matter what happens to him bc nobody should care about him (this is what he believes bc of how much he hates himself) and bc it only matters that in the end (wrong interpretation of his mothers words) everyone can laugh and be happy (s1 promise to Rem) then it doesn't matter if he is hurt. Finally he comes back to what started it: failing to save Rem. He thinks he failed bc he isn't good enough and bc he cared too much about himself by not doing test runs (killing himself like he wants to now).
He breaks down, he has no one, he hates himself, he thinks the witches are admonishing him, he is surrounded by beings whose logic is too twisted for normal people, everything he believes always ends up being wrong (his own words), Echidna betrayed him, Rem is gone, he has no way of fixing anything, this being that started it all is still trying to get closer to him and he loses it. This isn't just a tantrum, these are very serious and complex problems, and the scene is way darker than some understand. He doesn't want to hear anything more from anyone, he wants to be left alone, he wants it all to end. Being completely overwhelmed the tries to off himself for real. Remember if he "dies" in this realm or if his mind breaks there he might never become sane again and will remain broken forever, even when he goes back. This was an actual s*icide attempt.
So nothing was out of place as far as I see it. His desperation, feelings about himself and rbd, hiss attitude, Echidna's schemes, Subaru's opinion about Satella, his inner conflicts, everything was episodes or seasons in the making slowly building up until the breaking point in this episode.
In the end they manage to come trough to him and he says he will try to find a way to be useful to others without dying, and that he will try to love himself more even if he thinks both are going to be difficult. He also accepts that other do love him (it took Rem an entire episode for her love to get trough to him so this isn't a new trait either). He declines Echidna's hand and accepts Satella's even though he still doesn't understand her.
Also, in the anime its implied that he somehow has some love for Satella, but in the novel it is said that he feels love for her even though he doesn't know her, and that also makes him uncomfortable, scared and angry.

That “I wish Subaru would shut up” comment, is actually the EXACT reason Re:Zero has haters.
Despite what the fanbase says, Subaru is so unrelateable as a character, because I can never understand his motivations. Motivation for statements, actions, or just general behavior.
He feels like a poorly written MC & I gotta think it’s intentional, because literally everyone else around him is written beautifully. So, you assume the author is cooking something, but you shouldn’t need to head canon for the author IMO.
