Japan winter road trip - Northern prefectures (Nagano, Toyama, Niigata, Yamagata) - January 2019

- A winter road trip to northern Japan with my friend, we completed the trip in 10 days. Some highlights of the places we've been (Jigokudani Monkey Park, Bessho, Takayama, Shirakawa, Mount Haguro, Ginzan Onsen, Zao Fox Village, Nikko). A lot of driving footage in the video, in case you wonder what is it like to drive in Japan during the winter season. My advice is to drive really slowly like between 40~50km, your car will likely skid a lot, you won't hurt much in case you got into an accident. Overall the trip was well worth it, we took a route to stay away from the overly touristy places so we can be in the nature a bit more. Comment below if you have any questions!

I think you can rent a sedan for around $50~70 USD/day. It'll be more expensive if you need snow tire in the prefectures that don't usually snow. Have fun!

How was the drive up to takayama during winter ? We are thinking of doing something like that, driving in winter by the mountain roads sounds tricky. Lovely video thou!
It was pretty rough, very heavy snow, my car skidded a couple of times going downhill, luckily no crash but it was scary. just drive real slow like 40km and you should be fine.

@@steadyballer it was a rental car and we rented with winter tires equipped. Pretty much a must to drive in those conditions

not directly. I think you'll need to take the train to Yamagata, then change to a bus to go up to Ginzan onsen. The bus ride should be around 1~2 hours.

We stay at hotels 90% of the time. We found them cheaper on agoda than airbnb. Also most of the hotels we booked on the same day right before arrival, just in case if we got stuck in the snow we could change plans.

I don't know any Japanese and it was fine for the most part. I use google translate if I had to. In general, people will try to help you out regardless of the language barrier
