Zeppelin is known as a rock/blues band, but their acoustic work is some of the best in the music business

    • @Alpha_7227
      @Alpha_7227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The story goes something like George Harrison was chatting to Jimmy Page and a party and was telling him he was a big fan of him as a guitarist but didn't think Led Zeppelin were much of a band because they hadn't written a ballad. Then Jimmy and the boys wrote this lovely piece. JPJ shows his work as a multi instrumentalist and Jon Bonham shows great restraint, just giving the song want it needs.

Jimmy Page was influenced by many English folk guitarists like Bert Jansch who he stole Black Mountain Side from (Black Waterside on Janch's album).

Don't forget "All Of My Love" which Robert Plant wrote in tribute to his 5 year old son Karac who died while Led Zeppelin was on tour in the USA. Karac caught some sort of stomach virus which took his life. Led Zep cancelled the rest of the tour and flew back home to the UK. Once you know the story behind the song, "All Of My Love" is also a song that saddens the heart, almost like Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven".

Nick you must let Lex watch the live version from the movie "The Song Remains The Same" - as Robert Plant shows his fantasy as King Arthur and live "The Rain Song" is more powerful and so emotional it reduces me to tears every time. Love the reaction to this. It is such a beautiful song but live takes it to another level.....as does "Since I've Been Loving You" from the same movie's live performance....Now that really does gets the tears flowing. ....[ Heck just watch the movie guys ! ! ! I recently found your channel and subscribed. I too tried to learn this song in the 70's with the "Led Zeppelin Complete" song book. The tune was tabbed in standard tuning, which never sounded right. Since then I found the correct tuning and learned to play this masterpiece. For me, this is a song i have to play often to remember the fingering and picking to play it perfect. I love your reactions. I have only seen this and your two Robin Trower reactions. I plan on seeing much more. Thank You and Rock On!!

I had a summer job when I was still at school . I was helping a decorator . I used to take a little cassette player and listen to Houses of the Holy all day every day ..
It was probably 40 years ago and it still brings a tear to my eye ..
    Peace and love 👍🏻☮♥️

OK, your channel was just suggested to me for the first time and I watched Chicago, "Introduction", which is an all time favorite of mine . I bought "Chicago Transit Authority" in high school and it blew me away. Now, "The Rain Song", another all time favorite. If you keep reacting to songs like this, you're going to become a staple. Keep up the good work!

If Lex doesn't know Physical Graffiti, I'm sure she'd enjoy Ten Years Gone, which to me maybe edges this out for most beautiful Page guitar composition, though anyone who wants to put this first is right enough. PG also has a bunch of other great stuff she might not have heard.

Anyway to add to the long story below. Our worlds fell apart. I talked to him and we wrote letters almost every day. It was just one
of those things that was meant to be but never was. We kept in touch for all these years. I wondered why I had not heard for him for several months. I looked at his facebook page and freaked out (december) to read he had died earlier that Spring. This songs for you, Marcus

Led Zeppelin one of the iconic greats of the late 60s/ early 70s pioneering bands which other bands can only look/ listen and take note, thank you Nik and Lex for yet another meaningful emotional reaction always do these reviews with so much love of music. A request for the next Yes track you do - Awaken Live 1977 GFTO tour this is the only tour ever where they played 'The Flight Jam' which is the original Intro (not on the Album) to this song, it takes this song to a whole new level and you guys will be the first to react to this unique live track.

While Led Zeppelin has so many kick**s songs, Rain Song is my favorite by far. Page's guitar play has a feel that can't be described in words. I stumbled upon the tuning for this song on a TH-cam channel whiled stationed overseas away from my family and dedicated a great deal of time learning it (I am nowhere near as talented as Nick on guitar). It was so rewarding to learn this gem.
Post Script: If you aren't familiar, check out the Page/Plant Unplugged version. Jimmy's pick work at the end is worth the watch.

How beautiful to be able to discover beautiful songs, beautiful pieces, in these bands that we already liked, and that make us reaffirm our affection for them, what happened to him is that I think. I'm glad that you react to one of my favorite bands, along with pink floyd, and to be able to go through those melodies back, I haven't listened to it for a long time. VIVA LA BUENA MUSICA!! greetings from Argentina!!!

I am a big Zeppelin fan and always have been. It boils down to their roots in the blues. This song is different though and really displays their artistic diversity, and to be honest I had forgotten all about it. You 2 are some of the most honest reactors I have watched. I watch your reactions to my favorite artists and songs. In a way. It enables me to recapture that wonderful moment of my own discovery. But also I like to watch your expressions at crucial or my favorite points in the song to see if it has the same effect on you.

  • @mvunit3

From the 1st strum, I would have known that track anywhere Nick :D.
In my Top 10 Zeppelin tracks. Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti and Presence are my fave albums. I'll be sending you guys "something" for the _Seasons_ as its my fave time of year just started (but SoCal unfortunately doesn't really have a _real_ "Autumn" unfortunately). For me as a kid, I really only knew a few tracks I'd hear on the radio, but started to pay attention when I discovered "FM" AOR stations . . . then I got it at 15-17 years old (circa 78/80). Pretty late to go down the Zeppelin rabbit-hole.
Reading-up on the very thorough wiki-page, it seems those "Cello" sounds were John Paul Jones on the synth-keyboards (along with the ever-identifiable "Mellotron" keyboards, which contains within, "tape" looped with actual orchestra recordings, as each key plays the notes of the orchestra sounds/pitches): th-cam.com/video/ByD8gH7kYxs/w-d-xo.html
I never knew the story behind The Rain Song . . .
"Page wrote "The Rain Song" in response to George Harrison complaining to Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham that the group were unable to write ballads. In Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page, biographer Brad Tolinski quotes Page's recollection:
"George was talking to Bonzo one evening and said, "The problem with you guys is that you never do ballads." I said, "I'll give him a ballad," and I wrote "Rain Song," which appears on Houses of the Holy. In fact, you'll notice I even quote "Something" in the song's first two chords".
"No Quarter" is a top 5 track for me (also on the album), always makes me think of "The Fellowship of the Ring" making their way through the snowy mountains, but apparently it was another track based on Norse mythology (another "Hobbit" related track; "Battle of Evermore" from Led Zeppelin IV, very haunting, gorgeous track. And the band "Heart" does a great Live version as well).
"Over the Hills and Far Away" is another good one, and "The Song Remains the Same" is a great opener.
    - Fun reaction! Cool to see Lexi getting into it and hearing another side of Zeppelin :).
