This is definitely in their top 10 of studio produced tracks. There are several professional orchestras that have performed this as classical sheet music (along with a few other LZ songs)! It is slow and methodical, which will take some fans off guard the 1st time they listen to it. The medley of sounds from violins to cello to piano, all backed by the smooth acoustic pattern by Jimmy is astounding quite honestly! Even Bonzo gets in line by playing softly at times, using brushes! They were never afraid to take chances and do something new, and this track is proof of that!
Enjoying your reactions, keep em comin!

Carol, listen again, and focus on the utter beauty of that acoustic guitar. It’s some of the most exquisite acoustic playing I’ve heard in popular music, along with some of David Gilmour’s acoustic playing. And the synth Strings by JPJ brings so much lushness to the arrangement. Bonham’s tasteful use of brushes on the drums is perfect. And yes, the lyrics by Plant are poetry. If you listen again, you will know not to expect “bombastic” and heavy music, so you can better enjoy it for the gift it does bring; sheer beauty.

Yah, that's the thing about Zeppelin... first time hearing it you don't know what mood to prepare. Once you know it, you can go to it when YOU are tuned for that song. Another soft-tempo melodic poetic one like this is "Going to California" from the fourth album. Then sometimes they hit you with a folksy hoedown like "Gallows Pole" or "Bron y Aur Stomp" and you're wondering if you're about to find youself sitting at a 19th century backwoods campfire... or suddendly it's reggae style and they are playing "D'yermaker"(pronounced like Jamaica btw) or "Fool in the Rain"... then another hot blues-rocdk tune from the 1920's like "When the Levee Breaks" or "Black Dog"... and then it's back to big arena progressive for "Achilles Last Stand" and "Trampled Under Foot."
Welcome back to the roller coaster that is Led Zeppelin! The only other group I know that hits with such a variety of styles and themes is probably Styx. I highly recommend getting to know Styx as well, but if you pick their songs randomly, you could get a whole lot of different stuff from them in the same way.

The first chord is the same as the opening chord of The Beatles' classic ballad, *"Something".* Jimmy did that as an homage to George Harrison, who wrote The Beatles' song, as it was George who inspired Jimmy to write this song. George was a big fan of Zeppelin, but said to them one day, *_"The only problem with you guys is that you don't do any ballads."_* So even though that wasn't true (I guess George never heard, "Thank You", or, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"), the challenge was on, and this gorgeous ballad about rain and seasons and love was Jimmy's response, with an opening shoutout to George for inspiring its creation.

Try, *"One Summer Dream",* by ELO. The studio version. And make sure to not hastily turn it off if you don't like how it starts out, because there's a 50-second intro which is nice, but is not the song's main melody. It totally changes up at that point for the rest of the song, and wow, is it hypnotic. I think it's the most beautiful composition Jeff Lynne ever wrote. it's not as dainty as, *"The Rain Song",* but more mesmerizing, IMO. And really, it's not a song about a romance, but rather, any nostalgia your mind can conjure up...particularly memories of summers past. Let me know what you think. The Song Remains The Same & The Rains Song played together, live from Madison Square Gardens (1972), are so amazing. They are Plants fantasy story from their movie, The Song Remains The Same, was filmed at those 3 concerts. I highly recommend doing both together live, you’ll love it.

Yes this is Rock and roll this is a rock ballad this song is about the seasons of love! Jimmy is playing acoustic guitar and electric guitar Jimmy multi-layered many guitar tracks together! Yes Elie is right! It's Rock and roll! It's a ballad not a hard rock song That's what makes Led Zeppelin great being one of the forefathers of metal! This type of music playing is what Jimmy Page calls the whisper to the thunder and light and shade! Check out the live version! Msg

might be my favourite song - Beatle George Harrison said to Jimmy Page, why do you have no ballads?
As a result this was Led Zep being a bit more tender

For maximum impact, you should listen to this directly after "The Song Remains The Same", same way it was sequenced on the Houses of the Holy album.

I believe it will grow on you the more you listen if you let the music come to you - don’t listen with anticipation of a hard rocking or blues rock driven song because it is not. It is a beautiful song and despite my having listened to it since early 1970s I got goose bumps listening to it just now.

No matter what people say you should do the studio version first. Get to know the song and see where they took it live. It's better than backtracking. Then you'll figure out which ones you like studio or live more.

This makes sense. Live versions are contextual against the recorded versions. There is an undeniable connection between the two of them so... it's not a complete experience if missing the studio tracks. Might as well listen to the records then the "live versions" make sense.

This is not rock and roll. It is a gorgeous ballad. But you can have ballads under the GIANT umbrella of Rock. Keep in mind that the term “rock and roll” was used mainly about music from the late 1950’s and early 60’s….like the sub-genre of rockabilly. Elvis did a,lot of rock and roll. Listen, if you want, to the 1957 American hit Great Balls of Fire. That THAT’s rock and roll. Or Elvis Hound Dog. Or Chuck Berry’s “ Johnny Be Good”. Rock and roll has a fast beat. Back then, we did call most popular music “rock and roll”, but as the mid and late 60’s came along and music changed drastically, the “roll” part was dropped from general usage and became more narrowly used for the older, upbeat music of an earlier period. When you two listened to Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll, it was called that specifically because it was harkening back to that earlier 1950’s music that they had grown up with, and was done IN THR STYLE of that music. The Rain Song is definitely NOT that.
You both are great…a lovely couple. And this old grandma Is enjoying your reactions allot. 😁

this is a slow song, sometimes you get to like it better after listening many times. It doesn't have to be your favorite song immediately. So after a while and when you like the song and then you hear a live version and then you're like ooh yea! And in a concert setting when everyone loves this song when they start playing it then you have a different reaction again. Also after hearing it a while you can hear the piano (keyboard) that sneaks in slowly... and then there is an orchestra or strings section, there's the part where it swells up... But also if you look at the guitar, he's playing G chord... and he's playing it differently, is it missing some notes? Then you realize he's strumming it in reverse? or arpeggiated downward. Okay then maybe you try to play it and maybe you find out it's not tuned normally, was it composed in alternate tuning? Also can I tell the difference immediately between a regular guitar versus a 12 string?, nope, no I can't. Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 12 string, alternate tunings so that it has a different feel where notes ring differently. The subtle percussion stuff that sneaks in. And are those real violins/violas/cellos or is that all John Paul Jones on mellotron? I think you have to listen to it a dozen times maybe two dozen 🙂 then watch them play it live after you're familiar with the parts.

I understand and can't disagree regarding the slow start, it's an opinion and personally, I think it's awesome. Stairway starts out pretty low and slow, too. In the '80's, they used to call these songs "ballads" when a rock band would have a slow song. All the hair bands did.
