You guys need to check out Milla's film ULTRAVIOLET. Not only is she phenomenal in that one, but it's one of the most underrated movies I've ever seen.
Fun fact: The Protagonist and Antagonist never meet each other. The closest they come is when Dallas walks into an elevator right as Zorg comes out the next one over
I think this was Millia's 5th or 6th movie. But it was her big breakout really. She did amazing. Fun fact, her daughter currently looks EXACTLY like her. It's mind blowing.
Interestingly, the "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo is a fictional language of 400 words, invented by Besson(the director and co-writer). To practice, Jovovich and Besson held conversations and wrote letters to each other in the language
I love that you two designate this as an “older movie”, you whipper snappers 😂. This is my favorite Jovovich film, she’s just perfect as a supreme being. The best part of the movie is Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod, hilarious. I love this movie, I watch it multiple times every year
I wouldn't call "the queen of kick butt" under-rated, shes was the highest paid model in the world, has been nominated for many awards and won a few but should have received more wins. She has a loong list of movies and tv spots under her belt and is the only reason resident evil had sooo many sequels, her performance in the 2020 Monster Hunter wasn't bad either. She is in 2 yet to be released movies. Fun fact: She is a native Ukrainian, and became a US citizen in 1994.
"Is this based on a comic book?" It's inspired by two comics and Luc Besson hired the artists of both of them to do designs for this movie. He grew up on "Valerian and Laureline" (1967) which he eventually did adapt in 2017. He hired artist Jean-Claude Mesiers for The Fifth Element who asked him why he didn't just make a Valerian movie instead of what he felt like was a vague knock-off. Besson replied that he didn't believe VFX tech was ready to do it justice, and waited until he saw James Cameron's "Avatar," before he felt like he could properly tackle it. Mesiers had a strong influence on the look of 70's sci-fi, most notably some direct inspiration for Star Wars. The other comic, "The Long Tomorrow" (1976) by "Alien" writer Dan O'Bannon and artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud was both the visual inspiration for Blade Runner and the source material for the "Harry Canyon" segment of the "Heavy Metal" animated movie (Both released in 1981) and is considered ground zero for the iconic look of cyberpunk city-scapes. Ridley Scott had Moebius design all the human's environments, costumes, and tech for Alien (he took first crack at all the alien stuff too, but of course they went with HR Giger's designs for all of that) Scott didn't have Moebius for Blade Runner but he did have Syd Mead whom he told to make 2019 LA look like "The Long Tomorrow." You can see direct influences like the detective in the flying car, a femme fatale that is obviously the inspiration for Rachel, and the stratified society where the lower classes live in the literal lower levels of the city. ("Aliens" fans will also see why the gender of "Arcturian poontang" is irrelevant) Syd Mead and Moebius worked together on "Tron" another early cyberpunk classic, also released in 1981, which may have one of the earliest instances of "skybeams" in sci-fi movies.
This movie was truly one of THE best action-sci-fi-comedy with phenomenal practical effects, VFX, Music, and diverse cast of newcomers and legends and more, plus we get smoky as the fashion DJ and Deebo as the motherlovin President, old bilbo baggins as the frantic priest and the multi talented Gary Oldman great take as the villain.. this is my father's favorite film and I remember growing up over the years to STILL see him play this film, after he passed away, during that I played all of my father's fav music and one of the songs is in the very end of the film which is also my favorite song 🎵 ❤️
This is one of my dad's favorites as well. Such a great mix of sci-fi, action, drama and comedy. This movie literally fills every genre without over doing it.
@@Michelle-DiPalo truly right you are Michelle, this film perfectly displayed many genres into one film and including a music video style scenes at times, the costume designs and set designs were exciting to see.. also the editing is PLEASING, I love how the film edit scenes where it cuts to different characters finishing the previous character scene's sentence at times as well..
Watching this movie as a kid is one of my core memories. The Fifth Element has shaped so much of my taste in movies and storytelling as a whole. Also Little Light of Love is still a banger.
It used to be a more campy movie that not everyone loved. But thanks to more people checking it out as time went on, its become loved by most. It's the typical Luc Besson movie. It can be weird but it still is amazing. Have you seen Leon: The Professional? It's another of his great movies.
Thank you for watching one of my favorite films of all time. I've forgotten how many times I've watched it. And even in this edited down version, I cried (again) when Bruce Willis finally said "I love you" and that unleashed her full power. The power of a "perfect" relationship (even though it's super unusual) on display in full. Very very beautiful!
My favorite thing about this movie has always been that the Corbin and Zorg never met each other. When I saw it my friend turned to me and said "Did they give him that stupid overpowered gun just to make it believable that he could possibly be a match for Corbin?" A few seconds later Zorg died and I laughed my ass off!
This is truly one of the cheesist and yet one of the best 90s cyberpunk flicks that is very underrated. One deserves to be more recognized now more than ever. Great cast, great music, great set pieces, what more could you ask for from a 90s flick like this 😁😉
I think part of why this movie feels unique in the way it does is that it feels very "non-American". Most huge sci-fi blockbusters are big Hollywood affairs with tropes, cliches, and aesthetics we're used too, but The Fifth Element is so not traditional Hollywood. The acting decisions, shot choices, music, pacing, costuming, story etc, basically everything just has a way more "European" vibe is the only way I can describe it. The idea that Love is the fifth element, and so "love conquers all, all you need is love" etc, is such a romantic, quirky esoteric, and fairytale-esque idea especially for sci-fi genre stuff, it's just not something you often get in big-budget American cinema which is usually far more straightforward, especially in the 90s!
29:31, fun fact; the first part of the opera is a French classical opera, called “il Dolce Sueno”, from the opera “Lucia Di Lammermor”. The second part, that you refer to as “Hip Opera”, was actually composed completely by Luc Besson, the director, and was designed to be “unsingable” by human means. Mainly because there are rapid note changes, and 9th jumps(1 note higher than octave jumps). They come so fast, that it had to be synthesized.
If you guys enjoyed this, i'd highly recommend Luc Besson's previous film 'Leon The Professional." He made that film, on a much lower budget, to get the clout and resources to make The Fifth Element, which was a huge passion project for him.
Vin Diesel was in The Fifth Element, playing an ancillary character - Korben's dispatcher, Finger. You don't remember him, do you? That's because you didn't. Diesel did the gig as an uncredited voice actor.
I find that in a lot of movies Chris Tucker is a bit much, and it doesn't really work. In The Fifth Element, however, Chris Tucker is a *LOT* much, and it totally works!
One of my absolute all time favourite sci-fi films of all time! The cast, the script, the action, the details in everything... Really love it! Glad you enjoyed it.
My favorite little bit of detail is that through the whole movie you can actually keep track of how many matches are left in the box by the time they get to the temple. Also there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot of the NYC skyline when the shuttle leaves the New York spaceport that shows that the ocean levels have receded so far that the Statue of Liberty is now on a giant tower and the Brooklyn Bridge is way too far above the ground.
I saw this movie 5 times at the movies. Thought it was amazing and fell in love with Leeloo (Milla Jovovich). Man....what a great film. I do know Luc Besson, the Director and screenwriter wanted to make a SCI-FI film that wasn't dark like Star Wars or even Star Trek. Meaning, very little color in those films and kinda drab. That's why there's so much color and crazy outfits. What a great direction. You can see his color choices again in his "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets".
This is one of my all time favorite movies from the 90's, hell I even bought the soundtrack JUST for that opera number that yall had to censor. The entire cast was just great! When you said "Wow..he is just using ALL of the southern accents!" I lost it, my mother said the exact same thing in the theater. And Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod was beyond great....his countdown and scream were just great, and Milla was AMAZEING! Such a great move full of fun nods to what the future holds, I mean lets face facts, does anyone NOT think that streamers and Vloggers wouldn't be exactly like Ruby in the future?
I think this movie peaked really early with the scenes in Egypt and the car chase scene. Then the mid point with Chris Tucker dragged on but then the opera fight was amazing. All in all a mixed bag but the line "Aziz light" cracks me up to this day.
I saw this film in the theater with my brother and sister and I loved it, and we cracked up laughing at Chris Tucker. David Bowie, Prince, and Michael Jackson were considered for the role of Ruby Rodd. Tucker would be nominated for Worst Supporting Actor for his role.
For your infos the crazy dude who wants to shoot bruce willis in the first scene is Mathieu Kassovitz a world famous french director and actor ! You're welcome.
In the beginning, what Milla Jovovich did in the reconstruction chamber was a wrestling bridge. Milla Jovovich was also in the lead actor in the Resident Evil movies.
I just realized. At the end when the mother said "i'll just *ill myself" then lists of actions...those happened. "Throw myself in traffic," that's what Leeloo did. "Saran-wrap myself to the bed" that happened to Cornelius. Also the actual Fifth Element is Love. A lot of people miss that.
Mila was my first celebrity crush. This movie is why. Other than that I've always loved the mix of action, comedy, and campiness this movie has. Every character was brought to life great.
I always liked that the Evil is where the moon came from, they mention its roughly the size of the moon before they start shooting it. The last time that the evil came it would have been 5000 years prior and when it was defeated by the 5th element it would have solidified and become the moon and now after this time, earth will have two moons
Did anyone mention that the Diva's Song was made to almost be impossible for a human voice to sing? I LOVE this movie. My entire family loves it and my dad's not really a fan of sci-fi but he's down for this one. You should try to listen to all the actual opera singers attempting to sing the Diva's song. It's impossible and awesome at the same time. They are always trying to sing it and hit it.
They actually wanted Prince to play the role of Ruby Rod but when he turned it down Chris Tucker took the role . When he found out about the Prince thing he played Ruby as a exaggeration of him. Beautifully done as Prince was the man who could walk into a bar in a frilly shirt and heals then walk out out with ur girl. Chris Tucker was fantastic in the role.
Costume design was by Jean Paul Gautier. It was very inventive using straps for a futuristic look. Everyone expected him to nominated for an Oscar, along with Chris Tucker for Best Supporting Actor. Both were snubbed.
Anyone catch the inspiration for Anakin diving through the flying speeders during the car chase toward to beginning? Every time I watch that part of Episode II I always think of this movie.
I saw this movie as a kid with my dad on tv a couple years after it came out & it was instantly one of my favorite movies. Plus there's so many great lines, I still say "Zorg oldies but goldies" to this day. 😂
Zorg's henchman is played by trip-hop artist Tricky, of Massive Attack. He's directly or indirectly responsible for some of the best music to come out of the 90s. His "Maxinquaye" solo album still appears on lists over the best albums of all time. To qualify my following statement: I'm a massive heavy metal fan. The statement: Maxinquaye is an absolute masterpiece!
The reason the language sounded so good was because she and the director, who wrote it, actually learned it and could hold conversations with it. He got the gun on board because earlier he said it was undetectable so could pass checkpoints.
One of my favorite films. Milla did such a great job as LiLu. The whole cast did. I wish they still made movies like this. I must suggest you guys watching National Lampoons Vacation. The first one is HILARIOUS
I absolutely adored this movie as a 90s kid and appreciate it as actually being quality now that I am older. Anyone else think that when they were prepping the space cruise for takeoff that the aliens they burned out from the landing gear was a wink and a nod to the Tribbles from Star Trek?
Ruuuuubbbbyyyy Rod is easily one of the top 10 sci fi characters in all fiction. Kudios Chris Tucker. Relateable and funny. Sympathies for all the great actors familys and friends we lost. These people touched us and game us smiles when we most needed them.❤
Wonderful guest-host. Wonderful guest. Wonderful flick. What's not to like? I love this gem by Besson. Yes, it was mostly based on bits from the 'old' Valérian and Laureline comic book series, with some inspiration from Heavy Metal and works by Moebius (Jean Giraud), etc. Ironically, the metal-clad aliens at the beginning of 5th Element were also in Besson's Valerian (2017) movie. And yeah, he has a great cast, and is also pretty great at casts in general with his body of work... each main and secondary level roles have a certain magnetic-ism inherent in them, which makes Valerian headscratchingly weird in his choice for the two main actors; just so bland on camera. The rest of that movie is over the top chaotic as well. Worth a viewing even if on your own time.
Feels like StarGate at the start! Haha. Hey guys, nice 2 see y’all again!❤️❤️. The whole cast are brilliant. Mr Chris Tucker is too funny in this amazing film! R.I.P to man like Luke Perry.
This was hard to pull off at the time. Critics hated it. Many people didn't like it😒...read...didn't understand it. Glad you guys could appreciate it.

This whole movie has a just beautiful soundtrack by Éric Serra. And another cool thing, which the diva dance scene might be the most obvious example of, the WHOLE friggin movie is extremely tightly edited to the beat of the soundtrack! (Probably not the first or only movie to do that but one of the most consistent and best examples I’ve seen.)
@@moviemetalhead I’ve seen it. I remember it as really good! Also very tight, like many of Edgar Wright’s movies. :D Probably worth a rewatch. “Was he slow?” 😉
This was the 1st ever movie I've actually seen actress Milla Jovovich in, let alone my 1st memory of her!!!! And 5 years later, she portrayed Alice in Resident Evil!!!!
Neat fact the alien language Milla speaks is a custom language the director and her came up with and held full conversations in it on set. Also they married after the movie
I was in college when this came out...I loved it so much...and still do. Thanks for the time warp to easier days for me! Fun fact Chris Tucker's character outfits were supposed to be more over the top but Chris was like...let's find a happy middle. Can you imagine? Ha!

that is not the implication. the ball of fire was just the evil's mode of transportation
@@OpenMawProductions like Gozer in Ghostbusters lol
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I’ve probably seen it 100 times and it never gets old
Did anyone mention that the Diva's Song was made to almost be impossible for a human voice to sing? I LOVE this movie. My entire family loves it and my dad's not really a fan of sci-fi but he's down for this one. You should try to listen to all the actual opera singers attempting to sing the Diva's song. It's impossible and awesome at the same time. They are always trying to sing it and hit it.
Definitely one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films, I’ve must have watched more than 30x’s👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😎
A stop smoking aid in the future is just shorter cigarettes longer filter... Who knew? 😂😂
Confident men who are in touch with their feminine side are very attractive to women
This a classic wish I could of seen it at the theaters but I rented it at blockbuster years later I got on blu ray and now own it on digital
Great campy movie. I think your going to love book of Eli it's amazing
to this day this movie sits at number 3 on my all time favorite movies list
I saw this movie as a kid with my dad on tv a couple years after it came out & it was instantly one of my favorite movies. Plus there's so many great lines, I still say "Zorg oldies but goldies" to this day. 😂
I quote this movie all the time! Can't wait til you see Chris Tucker!!!! Super Green!!!
I’d still drop everything to watch this movie to this day.
I watched it 3 times today!
I think this movie has one of my favorite editors. Like just the jump cuts are so effective just incredible.
Let's fuckin go!! This movie is such a classic!!
One my favourite movies of all time.
I watch this movie if i'm feeling particularly low & it works every time.
Luc Besson wrote it when he was a teenager
This film is so super green! :)
Milla Jovovich's performance was so cute in this movie.
Good movie, my dad showed it to me
"Father? I know she's been through a lot, but we don't have much chicken." 🤣🤣
The reason the language sounded so good was because she and the director, who wrote it, actually learned it and could hold conversations with it.
He got the gun on board because earlier he said it was undetectable so could pass checkpoints.
Love is the 5th element. Water, fire, earth, wind and love.
Fifth Element came from a french comic book, Leloo alien language was develop by the movie director Luc Besson and Milla Jovovich
One of the best movies of all time, I love THE FIFTH ELEMENT!
I am that old, I actually watched this one in theater back then 😉
I seen this i theaters 4 times when it came out. Stayed all day at the theater. It's still in my top 10 movies of all time. Maybe even top 5.
One of my favorite films. Milla did such a great job as LiLu. The whole cast did. I wish they still made movies like this.
I must suggest you guys watching National Lampoons Vacation. The first one is HILARIOUS
LOADED WEAPON 1
@@-M0LE yes!!! I recommended this on a different channel a few days ago.
leeloo
Fun Fact: In the Original Spanish Dub 1997 DVD Korben Dallas is voiced by Adult Goku VA & Leeloo is voiced by Kid Goku & Kid Gohan VA.
I absolutely adored this movie as a 90s kid and appreciate it as actually being quality now that I am older. Anyone else think that when they were prepping the space cruise for takeoff that the aliens they burned out from the landing gear was a wink and a nod to the Tribbles from Star Trek?
7:41 That's Matthieu Kasovitz, who played Nino in the movie Amelie.
She was literally a teenager when they made the film he was well into his 40s , So yeah old enough to be her father and then some
Love this Dynamic duo of Reactors!!! And omg, get the lady a hat!! She's Reject Nation fam, right?
He woke up like "Oh Jesus!!!! Wait.......I'm 90's era Bruce Willis, I'm so cool, that's a relief"
Mila Jovovich actually INVENTED that alien language for this film, all on her own.
Feels like StarGate at the start! Haha. Hey guys, nice 2 see y’all again!❤️❤️. The whole cast are brilliant. Mr Chris Tucker is too funny in this amazing film! R.I.P to man like Luke Perry.
Chris Tucker should be given Screen Queen Award for this film. What a set of lungs...
love both your shirts🔥
I can't believe you haven't seen this before!!!! One of my favorites! Amazing cast, director, score, everything cheese haha
Watch Baby Driver
@@moviemetalhead I’ve seen it. I remember it as really good! Also very tight, like many of Edgar Wright’s movies. :D
Probably worth a rewatch.
“Was he slow?” 😉
@ Goo-Goo-Good kid, De-De-Devil behind the wheel
Hot Fuzz is probably one of my favourite movies. 🍦
@ My go to Edgar Wright films are Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
Who is “praper” and where can I look them up!? I’ve searched that word (even searched for their logo) and I get zero results.
I JUST realized that the things Corbin's mother says she'll do to herself at the end of the movie are both callbacks to earlier scenes,
There's a lot of that. Did you notice the match was a Checkov's Gun?
@@moxyblackfiddler After my first viewing, yeah.
YES !!!! I HAVE ME SOME COOL FRIENDS I CAN ENJOY WATCHING THINGS WITH.....
..... not gonna cry today!
LOVE Y'ALL
This was the 1st ever movie I've actually seen actress Milla Jovovich in, let alone my 1st memory of her!!!!
Ha!
John: "are they, like, dead.. or just frozen to death?"
" Are they dead, or just frozen to death?"lol
