One thing that is getting way overlooked. Ivy Hill is as spectator friendly as USDGC which is practically unheard of. The cart paths held a ton of people and gave a good view of the entire course. This needs to be the future of disc golf especially if we ever get our own courses.
Completely 100% disagree. Ball golf style open disc golf is about as fun to play or watch as watching paint dry. Give me woods and natural OB any day. Fake OB lines that can see an errant shot still make it back in bounds where in the woods it would have hit a tree and careened 60 ft deeper into the rough just isn't anywhere close to the same. PDGA is putting WAY WAY WAY too much emphasis on live coverage and live viewing and making courses out of places that should never have disc golf and aren't true to what disc golf is about.
@@robertkluttz8313 Sports evolve. PDGA is putting emphasis on growth while still ensuring a high-level of competition. That said, while I agree that woods are important, let's not forget that half of this event was played at New London, which is a VERY heavily-wooded course.
The hay bails on 4 are perfect. It blocks the short shot from skipping to the basket. If you put them on the back side it blocks a potentially bad shot going ob
I also liked hole 6 the way everyone played it. If more people would have ace run it and gone way left it would have sucked but I feel like people played it wrong and therefore I liked it
As a hack spectator, imo it was amazing overall. The two courses are totally epic. I could nitpick Ivy, but it left me more impressed with the players. I was knackered after two days of just walking along with a few cards early in week. I respect the fitness of the pros a lot more. It was grueling. Even stopped at FDN store and snagged a Bear Bite disc, lol. The whole thing felt closer to pro ball golf.
Hole 14 was a very entertaining hole. If you surveyed the people who watched the tournament and asked which hole they remembered the most 14 would probably be up there. Another whole that took accuracy as well as power. The second shot took distance control. And if your a good putter you should be able to make the putt if you made a good approach shot. This hole takes two good throws and a good putt. If you are not making The putt 75 percent of the time in practice and you don’t want your disc to roll then throw an approach shot that matches the slope. If you throw a hyzer shot into the hill expect your disc onto a hill expect it to roll.
@@derpderpin1568 It’s a hole who have to be careful with. If you want to minimize your risk then just layup on the area beyond the basket for your putt. It’s a risk reward shot .
No the hole sucked. Going for risky RNG plays is never how the game should work. Designing courses around nothing but OB lines is absolutely never how the game should work. This was BY FAR the worst course played all year.
A different spin- PDGA, DGPT, DGN, and whatever content creators you shake a stick at want and need disc golf to grow. More people playing means more interest in the viewing, more viewing means more ad revenue, yadda yadda. Flat out, unequivocally, that happens when people are excited about the sport (or activity). I am excited about the sport when I see the pros play an event and I think “I need to play THERE!” even if I know I will suck. That’s what keeps me coming back and watching disc golf. Sure, there are holes on most courses that I give the side eye to, but I think almost every course that has been seen on tour in the last few years would have me excited to try out in some way, shape, or form. Hell, my wife and I even packed discs for our 25th anniversary trip to Scotland so we could play Bluebell Woods after seeing a video of a tournament there. Ivy hill was the first course I have seen a top tier pro event at where I have zero interest in ever playing that course. It did not inspire me to go out and throw. I got no “I wanna be like Mike” vibes. I got no excitement in watching highly skilled athletes in a specialized sport do great things, because almost every hole was better than even money of bad luck biting you in the butt. I enjoyed watching players succeed in spite of the course design (luck was off screwing with someone else’s day), but I think the only people who enjoyed this sort of course are those who enjoy the misfortune of others. Every now and then you have to order the ghost pepper wings to experience them. You probably won’t have them as a regular part of your diet, but trying them occasionally can be a good thing. Ivy Hill is like taking that ghost pepper sauce and smearing it in your eyes.
When I saw Ivy Hill being played the only thing I thought was wow disc golf is in trouble if we're playing on courses this bad for our championship. It was the most embarrassing thing I'd ever seen in the game.
Hole 7 could be even better if it was a little further right (20 ft ish) and a little closer to the lake (10 feet) to make it a little riskier to try and park it.
14 is a risk award shot! Take the risk or don’t take the risk. You can lay up. If you lay up you can avoid the rocks. The while was not dangerous. Be careful and smart while throwing and walking on this hill.
Nicholas should have made the basket on 14z He could have played up on the flatter surface beyond the basket for a par shot. He took the risk and it rolled. He did not have to take that risk. He wouldn’t have had to make such a long shot if his approach shot was better. And closer. Don’t blame a whole because the player couldn’t execute.
I guess I didn't care how fair the holes were. I enjoyed 6 and 14 as a spectator. 6 because it was fun to view right at the basket and 14 because of the drama. Plus, the hill across from 14 was nice to sit on.
I'm a huge fan of Nate Heinold and his courses overall, but holes 14 and hole 17 were terrible 😂😂. I dont think hole 17 gets the disrespect it deserves. The island was too small, there should have been a better safe play to a long putt towards OB. The trees made it so there was only a straight shot that will only sit if you happen to be the lucky one. Most who went for it slid out the back. It was almost irresponsible to go for it.
USDGC 18 absolutely needs to be fixed. I guess there is no easy fix since they don’t own the property. Without that fatal flaw it’s the best finishing hole in disc golf. They could at least put bleachers where the player’s area and vendor tent is.
You mean the innova invitational ,,, should not be called the United States championships, when 1 manufacturer, has a monopoly over the whole event, with no chance of any other manufacturer hosting it
Getting a skip over the hay bails is not luck! In order to get a skip you have to have the speed and angle that creates that skip. You can always go around the hay bails.
17 was a bad hole. 14 was a good hole but the area around the target should have an area that's at least kind of flat and no rocks. I didn't like 4 but it could be made good
Hole 4 should be a whole every pro should be able to stay in bounds in at least 75 percent of the time. To birdie it it takes accuracy. Shouldn’t pro’s have accuracy? Yes they should. If they do not want to go out of bounds then throw a shot that has a low percentage of going out of bounds.
Maple is overrated with quite a few flaws. 5 tee is at circles edge of 4 gold basket. There is no space between 1,2,6,7, no buffer for errant shots and tree kicks and no space for spectators. Just naming a couple issues.
I love hole 14 because it's difficult, you have to think. Life is not easy but you can bitch and cry. Look at the masters in Augusta, I believe hole 12 or 16. The pros don't bitch, separates the men over the cry baby's.
so hole 14 is bad too much score separation too hard of a green, but hole 16 European open bunker rule that can ruin your entire tournament is for some reason good. I'm confused.

Agree. It was spectacular as a spectator.
I think it beats USDGC for viewing just because 18 at USDGC has historically very limited viewing.
